Map Review (Instructional Master DR-2)<br />

Have students use the Instructional Master (DR-2) to review<br />

various locations from Westward Expansion. Directions: Look<br />

carefully at the map, then use it to answer the following questions:<br />

1. What waterway was built to connect the Hudson River and the<br />

Great Lakes? (the Erie Canal)<br />

2. Where did the Oregon Trail begin? (Missouri; St. Joseph,<br />

Missouri)<br />

3. In 1869, what method of travel connected Omaha, Nebraska<br />

and San Francisco, California? (the transcontinental railroad)<br />

Image Review<br />

Show the Flip Book images from any read-aloud again, and have<br />

students retell the read-aloud using the images.<br />

Domain-Related Trade Book or Student Choice<br />

Materials: Trade book<br />

<strong>Read</strong> an additional trade book to review a particular person, item,<br />

or event related to westward expansion; refer to the books listed in<br />

the Introduction. You may also choose to have the students select<br />

a read-aloud to be heard again.<br />

Key Vocabulary Brainstorming<br />

Materials: Chart paper<br />

Give students a key domain concept or vocabulary word such as<br />

locomotive. Have them brainstorm everything that comes to mind<br />

when they hear the word, such as tracks, steam, journey, etc.<br />

Record their responses on a piece of chart paper for reference.<br />
