Basic Code Spelling<br />

• Ask students to turn to Worksheet 5.2. The purpose of this worksheet is to<br />
have students practice reading the basic code spelling of ‘oo’. Ask students<br />
to write ‘yes’ or ‘no’ at the end of each statement to tell whether or not the<br />
statement could happen in real life.<br />

Tricky Word Cards<br />

• Write the following Tricky Words on yellow index cards, one word per card:<br />
no, go, and so.<br />
Tricky Word: no<br />
• Expected: the letter ‘n’ is pronounced /n/. Tricky: the letter ‘o’ is<br />
pronounced /oe/ (like the letter name) rather than /o/ as students might<br />
expect.<br />
Tricky Word: go<br />
• Expected: the letter ‘g’ is pronounced /g/. Tricky: the letter ‘o’ is<br />
pronounced /oe/ (just like the ‘o’ in no).<br />
Tricky Word: so<br />
• Expected: the letter ‘s’ is pronounced /s/. Tricky: the letter ‘o’ is<br />
pronounced /oe/ (just like the ‘o’ in no).<br />
