SCHEDULE PLANNING GUIDE
REQUIRED CLASSES
Santa Monica College’s Manicure
Program curriculum is mandated by the
California State Board of Barbering and
Cosmetology. Class prerequisites may be
fulfilled either by proof of prior training
experience or by successful completion of
the prerequisite. Student kits required for
use in the beginning classes are also
required for the advanced classes.
Current class schedules are available
online at www.smc.edu and at the Santa
Monica College Bookstore. Textbooks
and student kits, available at the campus
bookstore, may also be ordered online
through the SMC Bookstore link on the
homepage.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Students must pass all of the listed classes
(or the equivalent) with a “C” or better and
complete a minimum of 400 hours of
training in preparation for the State Board
Examination.

To qualify to take the California
State Cosmetology License
Examination for Manicurists,
applicants must complete a
minimum of 400 hours of training
and pass all of the listed classes
with a “C” or better.
Full-time students attend classes
Monday through Friday from
8:00am-4:30pm. In addition to
school holidays, breaks include
two weeks between the fall and
winter sessions, a week in spring,
and one week between the
summer and fall sessions.
Hours from other cosmetology
schools are transferable with a
Proof of Training Document from
the school and approval from the
department chair. The State
Board of Cosmetology may grant
students with international or outof-state
licenses credit towards
the 400-hour requirement.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long is the Nail Care/Manicure
Program?
Full-time students may complete the 400
hours in approximately 2 eight-week
sessions.
Is there a part-time program?
Classes are offered independently of each
other, so students may choose to attend full or
part-time to fit their personal schedules.
Is hands-on experience included?
Beyond the in-classroom theory and
practice, students gain the required practical
experience in our busy on-site salon.
Must classes be taken in a specific order?
Classes without prerequisites may be taken
in any order. Other classes must be taken
concurrently or sequentially.
What is the tuition?
Class enrollment fees are on a per-unit basis.

Are there additional costs?
Total costs for textbooks, student kits and
incidentals are approximately $400.
Are uniforms required?
To ensure a professional atmosphere,
Manicuring students are required to wear
black scrubs with completely enclosed black
comfortable shoes.
Is there an AA degree in Cosmetology?
Unfortunately because the total units of the
Manicuring program are 7, there is no AA
degree. However, a Certificate of Completion
is given at the completion of the program.
