<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Monica</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s Manicure<br />
Program curriculum is mandated by the<br />
California State Board of Barbering and<br />
Cosmetology. Class prerequisites may be<br />
fulfilled either by proof of prior training<br />
experience or by successful completion of<br />
the prerequisite. Student kits required for<br />
use in the beginning classes are also<br />
required for the advanced classes.<br />

<strong>Monica</strong> <strong>College</strong> Bookstore. Textbooks<br />
and student kits, available at the campus<br />
bookstore, may also be ordered online<br />
through the SMC Bookstore link on the<br />

To qualify to take the California<br />
State Cosmetology License<br />
Examination for Manicurists,<br />
applicants must complete a<br />
minimum of 400 hours of training<br />
and pass all of the listed classes<br />
with a “C” or better.<br />
Full-time students attend classes<br />
Monday through Friday from<br />
8:00am-4:30pm. In addition to<br />
school holidays, breaks include<br />
two weeks between the fall and<br />
winter sessions, a week in spring,<br />
and one week between the<br />
summer and fall sessions.<br />
Hours from other cosmetology<br />
schools are transferable with a<br />
Proof of Training Document from<br />
the school and approval from the<br />
department chair. The State<br />
Board of Cosmetology may grant<br />
students with international or outof-state<br />
licenses credit towards<br />
the 400-hour requirement.<br />

How long is the <strong>Nail</strong> <strong>Care</strong>/Manicure<br />
Program?<br />
Full-time students may complete the 400<br />
hours in approximately 2 eight-week<br />
sessions.<br />
Is there a part-time program?<br />
Classes are offered independently of each<br />
other, so students may choose to attend full or<br />
part-time to fit their personal schedules.<br />
Is hands-on experience included?<br />
Beyond the in-classroom theory and<br />
practice, students gain the required practical<br />
experience in our busy on-site salon.<br />
Must classes be taken in a specific order?<br />
Classes without prerequisites may be taken<br />
in any order. Other classes must be taken<br />
concurrently or sequentially.<br />
What is the tuition?<br />
Class enrollment fees are on a per-unit basis.<br />

Are there additional costs?<br />
Total costs for textbooks, student kits and<br />
incidentals are approximately $400.<br />
Are uniforms required?<br />
To ensure a professional atmosphere,<br />
Manicuring students are required to wear<br />
black scrubs with completely enclosed black<br />
comfortable shoes.<br />
Is there an AA degree in Cosmetology?<br />
Unfortunately because the total units of the<br />
Manicuring program are 7, there is no AA<br />
degree. However, a Certificate of Completion<br />
is given at the completion of the program.<br />
