Welcome to Varsity 2012. This is the first
year that our bitter rivalry has been fought
out on St Mary’s Turf. Last year 400
Simmies travelled to Brunel to watch our
sports teams narrowly loose in a hard
fought battle.
I would like to welcome Gary O’Brien
(Brunel V.P. Activities), all players,
supporters and performers of Brunel
University to St Mary’s and am looking
forward to an epic day of sport and
showcasing from both Institutions.
Although the rivalry runs deep there is a
mutual respect between the Institutions and
I hope every player, supporter and staff
members conduct themselves with the
upmost dignity throughout the day and
evening activities.

St Mary’s Season Review
The 2011-2012 season has been a huge
step in the correct direction for sport here at
St Mary’s. With an incredible number of
promotions in the 2010 season this year was
going to be a tough test. Today is the day
that all teams have been waiting for. A
chance to show why we are the number 1
university and show the passion that is
unique to those who bleed blue and white!
Who to watch out for today
Men’s Football 1st Team who were relegated
from BUCS premier south on goal difference
after an astonishing season which saw them
finish up with 12 points. They will go into
today’s Game as favourites.
Women’s Basketball and women’s hockey
have had solid seasons with the latter
reaching last weeks Conference Cup final.
Men’s and Women’s rowing in their debut
season have exceeded expectations in terms
of numbers and performance, they will be a
force in the ergo race.
Tennis 1st remain unbeaten in league
competitions since 2009, they are sure to be
one of our main players today.
The final fixture of the day see’s St Mary’s
Rugby Union 1st Team who missed out on
promotion back to BUCS Premier level by a
matter of inches, will be sure to come out all
guns blazing against a Brunel team who have
had a successful season gaining promotion
and will finally be playing St Mary’s 1st in the
league next season. Not for long, though, I’m
sure.
To all teams competing today have a great
afternoon and work hard.

Season Review
Brunel
It has been a year of
success in regular and
new places for Brunel
sport. Athletics,
basketball and netball
continue to triumph but
there have been most noteable
improvements in our rowing and especially
rugby teams with Union landed promotion
with both teams. Badminton have the
asset of BUCS individuals winner Nathan
De Cruz. Cricket, newly promoted to the
Southern Prem, will be looking forward to a
rematch after last years' defeat as will a
Tennis team full of energy this season.
Last years' close result of 9-7 to Brunel
reflected a great year for both Universities
with sport and this year promises to be
more of the same.
I look forward to seeing all sports in action
and really wish for a Varsity fought in great
spirit, celebrating sport more than
anything. Let battle commence
