Simple elixir,..............................14 fluidounces.
Fluid extract of rhubarb,...........2 fluidounces.
Sulphate of magnesium,......... 2 troyounces.
Carbonate of magnesium,....... a sufficient quantity.
Triturate the fluid extract of rhubarb in a capacious mortar
with carbonate of magnesium in amount sufficient to form a creamy
mixture, then gradually add the simple elixir, having previously
dissolved in it the magnesium sulphate; stir well, and filter.
Each fluidrachm of the finished elixir represents seven and
one-half minims of fluid extract of rhubarb, and contains seven and
one-half grains of magnesium sulphate.
In the year 1876 an anonymous correspondent furnished the
Druggists’ Circular with a mixture for making the above elixir. It was
much more complex and presented no advantages over our formula.
The National Formulary makes this elixir of a mixture of
senega, podophyllum, leptandra, jalap, and Rochelle salt. It is an
imperfect pharmaceutical preparation.
standing a few days, with occasional agitation, filter the mixture. This
elixir is of the same strength as that of the compound elixir of celery of
the National Formulary. It deposits a sediment and is not a perfect
preparation.
