DDC520 Two-Channel Plate

Amplifier with Integral D-Pro DSP

In today’s cost-conscious marketplace, powered loudspeaker systems are often the first choice

for production studios, sound-reinforcement operators and high-end consumers. Loudspeaker

manufacturers have several available options. Source a conventional amplifier and hope that it

provides the flexibility you need. Or maybe design your own amplifier modules. Alternately,

why not take advantage of an all-digital solution from KSC Industries – in other words,

a Digmoda ® Class-D Plate Amplifier with an integral DSP section– and one that provides

affordable, simple-to-fabricate designs for your customers. Existing loudspeaker systems

also can benefit from Digmoda’s D-Pro DSP to fine-tune the system’s frequency

response and/or add specific characteristics for a target marketplace or end user. There is,

quite literally, unlimited potential for improvement.

Audio Processor can turn any studio monitor or sound-reinforcement loudspeaker into a better

sounding, self-contained, active system that extends your market opportunities.

The DDC520 Two-Channel Plate Amplifier is the ideal choice for fabricating traditional bi-amped

loudspeaker systems. The unit features a 500W section for powering a low-frequency driver, and a

250W section to be used for either combination or separate MF/HF drivers. Programmable DSP lets

you tailor the output of each of these three sections to match the precise requirements of the chosen

loudspeaker components, including crossover frequencies, overall equalization, component-overload

protection, level trims and time-alignment delays.

KSC’s built-in D-Pro Digital Audio Processing System consists of two components: a Windows ®

XP-compatible D-Pro Software Application which, via an easy-to-use Graphical User Interface, lets

OEM users adjust each system parameter; and a DP Series Digital Audio Processor (DAP) Module

included within each plate amplifi er that utilizes up to 16 Bi-quad fi lters per channel to provide the

necessary ultra-precision, 24-bit/96 kHz DSP functions to implement the system settings developed by

the D-Pro Software. During manufacturing, you simply connect a PC or laptop to the plate amplifi er via

a USB port, and load the relevant crossover, EQ, overload protection and delay settings into the

amplifi er’s non-volatile fl ash memory. It couldn’t be easier.

The DDC520 Two-Channel Plate Amplifier combines a 500W section for powering a LF driver and a

250W section for either a combination MF/HF driver or, for example, separate MF and HF drivers via a

passive crossover. The unit is designed to mount into a rear-panel cutout on the loudspeaker cabinet.

The plate amplifi er is secured to the enclosure via screws that connect through the rear panel to the

amplifi er’s aluminum enclosure, with a supplied rubber gasket ensuring an air-tight fi t. Only 2.5 inches

of depth is required within the speaker cabinet, making it suitable for even slim-line designs.

For ultra-precision audio quality, we use only Class-D Power Amplifi ers with analog feedback. To

ensure audiophile-quality, Digmoda Class-D circuits utilize a proprietary topology that converts a low-

level analog signal into a high-power pulse-width modulated (PWM) output. All our models are more

than 80% effi cient, thanks to a highly-evolved Class-D design and power supplies. They produce very

little heat – a useful feature for plate amplifi ers.

Digital Signal Processing

Designing crossovers, equalizers and level control can be a complex process for

manufacturers of powered loudspeakers. Even high-precision analog components will

produce less than optimal performance. And whenever you change drivers or cabinet

dimensions, all-digital signal processing offers unprecedented fl exibility for original

equipment manufacturers. D-Pro Digital Audio Processing is built into every KSC

Industries Digmoda Series Professional Power Amplifi er. Our DSP provides easy-toimplement

crossover fi lters, system equalization, speaker protection, noise gates,

limiting, delay and more. These and other unique features make Digmoda Plate Amplifi ers a

unique building-block choice for OEMs.

D-PRO DIGITAL AUDIO PROCESSING consists of two components: a Windows ® XP-

compatible D-Pro Software Application which, via an easy-to-use Graphical User Interface,

lets OEM users adjust each system parameter; and a DP Series Digital Audio Processor

(DAP) Module included within each plate amplifier that utilizes up to 16 Bi-quad filters

per channel to provide the necessary ultra-precision, 24-bit/96 kHz DSP functions to

implement the system settings developed by the D-Pro Software. During manufacturing,

Any Digmoda Plate Amplifi er can be used within a number of different loudspeaker

models, with confi guration-specifi c D-Pro crossover, EQ and protection settings to suit

different drivers and cabinet designs.

The DP Series DAP Modules provide all of the DSP necessary to store and implement

settings developed by the D-Pro Software. Depending upon the I/O confi guration of the

host plate amplifi er, two versions of the DSP cards are available: the DP130 Module is a

one-in/three-out processing module; while the DP240 Module provides a two-in/four-out

confi guration. An array of Bi-quad IIR fi lters per channel can be user-confi gured in a choice

of Low-pass, High-pass, Band-pass, All-pass, Parametric EQ, LF shelf and HF shelf

confi gurations. (IIR refers to the fi lter’s Infi nite Impulse Response function, which is non-zero

over an infi nite length of time. IIR fi lters can achieve a given fi ltering characteristic using less

memory and calculations than a similar Finite Input Response/FIR fi lter.)


Usefully, all systems settings can be adjusted in real-time using a LIVE UPDATE MODE and

modifi ed values auditioned one by one while listening to music and similar program

material. In this way a loudspeaker system might be fi ne-tuned for specifi c artistic

tastes and market requirements, using actual music rather than test-tone signals.

The resulting custom parameter settings can then be uploaded via the standard USB

connection from the portable or desktop PC into the Digmoda Plate Amplifi er.

The D-Pro Software Application comprises several fully confi gurable DSP

processing blocks, as can be seen on this Primary DSP Set-up Screen for initializing

and controlling all-digital input and output elements.

Previously saved systems settings can be recalled from the PC’s hard drive and

resaved as necessary in various OEM libraries.

The DP130/DP240 Modules incorporate:

• Ultra-precision computations ensure extremely

low noise for all processing blocks.

• A total of 16 Bi-quads IIR fi lters per channel

that can be confi gured in a variety of EQ

confi gurations for added programming

fl exibility.

• Dual-threshold Dynamics Stage with sidechain

processing for frequency-agile control

of compression, limiting and expander

confi gurations, including speaker protection

and noise gating with soft-knee settings.

• Industry-standard USB communications for

easy-to-implement programming and realtime

control.

• Ultra-high performance converters for

enhanced sonic capabilities.

The D-Pro Software Application runs on any

Window XP ® -compatible laptop or PC and, via a

simple-to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI) and

USB connection, lets OEM manufacturers adjust

each of the following system parameters:

• Crossover frequencies and bandwidth for

multi-way systems.

• Center frequency, bandwidth/Q and level cut/

boost for parametric EQ sections to provide

critical system equalization.

• Threshold levels, attack and release times

for compression and limiting sections to

protect critical system components, such as

high-frequency drivers, and provide userprogrammable

noise gating.

• Delays settings to correct for time anomalies in

multi-component loudspeaker systems.

Adjustment pages are provided for selecting the six available DSP processing

channels per three-channel block; a page toggle brings up the other trio.

The user simply clicks on each block to access the DSP function:

I/O SIGNAL ROUTER SECTION enables input and output signals to be

routed through the two sets of DSP channels via simple point-and-click

on/off buttons; a page toggle brings up the other trio.


BIQUAD PARAMETRIC EQ SECTION provides fully Parametric

Equalization Filters for generating multi-band crossover circuits.

Up to 16 Bi-Quad first/second-order IIR filters can be set up

for each of the six processing channels.

Seven fi lter types can be developed: Low-pass, High-pass,

Band-pass, All-pass, Parametric EQ, LF shelf and HF shelf.

SOFT VOLUME SECTION enables

volume/gain and on/off mute to

be adjusted for each the three

DSP channels; a page toggle

brings up the other trio.

Filter Sections can also be confi g-

ured as MULTIBAND CROSSOVERS,

by setting LF, MF and HF bands,

where appropriate. User parameters

include Order Type (fi rst/second-order);

Cut/boost level; Cut-off/Center

frequency; and Bandwidth/Q.

LIMITER/COMPRESSOR SECTION allows point-and-click control

of the Dual-threshold Dynamics Section used to generate soft-knee

well as developing level-sensitive noise-gates.

DELAY CORRECTION SECTION enables individual delay

The minimum delay step-size is 10.4 microseconds, up to a

maximum per system of 21 ms.
