The Nazis uprooted the cemetery stones and put them to "practical" use as pavement slabs. The killers sought to destroy the Jewish people and all evidence of the Jewish people. The gravestones were collected after the war and used to construct this memorial to a ‘vanished world.’
INTRODUCTION 2 The Southern Institute for Education and Research at Tulane University is a non-profit race and ethnic relations center that promotes tolerance through education. The Southern Institute fosters ethnic understanding by improving the quality of anti-bias education in schools and by organizing inter-racial dialogues that seek to prevent divisive conflicts. This is the seventh annual Summer Workshop: Teaching the Holocaust. The idea for holding the Summer Workshop was born of frustration teachers evinced after attending the Southern Institute’s daylong Holocaust education workshops during the school year. The teachers wanted more. They wanted more information and more participation. They wanted the ‘give and take’ that time constraints do not permit. They simply wanted more knowledge about a subject that tends to open eyes, and hearts. The Summer Workshop is designed for these teachers. The principle theme of this workshop is a troubling one: the attitude of the Christian population during the destruction of the Jewish people in Europe. In recent years, under the guidance of John Paul II, the Vatican has made efforts to address this controversial chapter in history. John Paul entered an underground seminary in his native Poland in 1942. At precisely that time the Nazi effort to murder Polish Jewry was underway; all of Poland was a witness to the murder of those who had been neighbors (if not countrymen). Poland was the setting of the Holocaust, the land where the Nazis murdered the Polish Jews and the Jews of Europe. In addition, three million Polish Catholics perished under the Nazis, including virtually all of the leadership. In March 1998, after eleven years in the making, the Vatican released a major document, "We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah." The document addressed the subject of the Christian attitude and behavior during the Holocaust. The document did not put the subject to rest, but sparked further debate. While some people felt the subject was clarified, others believed “We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah” did not go far enough, particularly in regard to addressing the wartime "silence" of Pius XII. The Summer Workshop also explores the thoughts and actions of Christians who rescued Jews. These Christians were known as “Righteous Gentiles,” and ten thousand have been honored by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial in Israel. The majority of the recipients have been Poles. In the memorable phrase of the sociologist and Holocaust survivor Nechama Tec, these individuals were “the light that pierced the darkness.” There was little such light in
