Hyderabad
Blending old world Charm
& Modern-day Charisma
Legendary City-Romantic
History
Hyderabad offers a fascinating panorama of the
past, with a richly mixed historical and cultural
tradition spanning over 400 glorious years. There
is a love story related to the founding of the city
of Hyderabad. As a young prince, Muhammad
Quli of Golconda, fell passionately in love with a
maiden from Chichlam village across the river
Musi. He would even venture to cross the river in
full spate for a tryst with his beloved. Ibrahim
Qutb Shah, his father, built a bridge on the river
Musi, so that the crown prince would not endanger
his life. When he ascended the throne,
Muhammad Quli built a city in honour of his lady
love, Bhagmati... The city was called Bhagyanagar
(city of good fortune) to appease his beloved.
Later on, she became his queen and was called
Hyder Mahal, and the city too came to be called
Hyderabad. Steeped in romantic history, immortalizing
an ancient love story, Hyderabad is indeed
a rare treat for the traveler.

Monumental Legacy
A Living Heritage
Hyderabad is a city so vivid and vibrant, the more you see
of it, the more mysteries open up. Come explore this land
of timeless beauty. Charminar is the most magnificent
architectural monument, standing in the heart of the old
city of Hyderabad, built by Muhhammad Quli Qutb Shah,
founder of Hyderbad in 1591. Most of the fabled bazaars
of Hyderabad are located here. The city's pearl trade also
originates here. Golconda was one of India's most
famous Forts, the capital of the Qutb Shahis from 1518-
1687. The fortress is famous for its acoustics, palaces and
ingenious water supply system. A sound and light show
held daily takes visitors into Golconda's exciting past.
The Qutub Shahi Tombs, the oldest historical monuments
in Hyderabad where an entire dynasty is laid to rest,
reflecting the architectural splendor of the erstwhile kingdom,
are worth a visit. The Salarjung Museum is the
largest one-man collection of artifacts and antiques from
around the world and houses rare and surprisingly unique
items. Revived recently and an enthralling place to visit is
the princely abode of Chowmohalla Palace, which is
now open to the public, where elite weekend cultural
extravaganzas will enrapture your senses.

Shopping in Hyderabad
An exhilarating experience
While strolling in the bazaars of Hyderabad one gets the feeling
of moving through the dramatic lanes of some magic bazaars.
These bazaars have the mix of ancient, carvings, wood carvings,
brassware, Pembarthi sheet metal art, Nirmal art, Kalamkari
art, Banjara embroidery, khadi crafts and dhurries which are
unique to Hyderabad. In addition to which, Hyderabad has sarees
to please every woman, in the world. Pocahmpally, Ikat,
Gadwal, Venkatagiri, and sarees with Zardozi gold embroidery
are some of the famous ones. The city offers everything from
antiques to Handicrafts to Jewellery and from dresses to leather
goods to Pearls and semi-precious stones. Hyderabad has been a
major shopping center of India for centuries right from the
Mogul kings to the British rule.
Charminar is one of the oldest commercial areas of the city. It is
a traditional place for silversmiths, Pearl sellers and Bangle sellers.
Laad Bazaar is famous for its Hyderabadi Lacquered stone
studded bangles. You can shop till you drop in Hyderabad's innumerable
shops selling exquisite Kalamkari and
Himroo fabrics, blouses and skirts embroidered
with mirrors of Lambadi Mirror-work, semiprecious
stones and jewellery including the ever
famous Pearls. One can also purchase Kondapalli
Modern Shopping
Malls
Vying with these for attention are the burgeoning shopping
malls in the city, GVK One, Hyderabad Central,
Lifestyle, Shoppers Stop, City Centre, Big Bazaar,
and many more, where designer goods, accessories,
appliances, furniture and electronic goods are the cynosure
of the younger generation. Hyderabad today,
conspicuously presents a modern canvas of changing
lifestyle and landscape. Limousines whiz by where once
horse-drawn carriages trod.
Elegant mansions, huge archways and majestic sprawling
homes no longer dot the skyline. Flyovers criss-cross the
busy intersections. The laid-back metropolis is now a
science city and hub of information technology. Happening
and high-tech with a historic charm, Hyderabad
truly embodies the essence of India.
