INFORMATION RELATING TO THE POST OF ASSISTANT LECTURER/LECTURER IN<br />
EDUCATION WITH EXPERTISE IN ETHICAL AND INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION<br />
– 3 YEAR CONTRACT<br />
<strong>St</strong> Patrick’s <strong>College</strong>, a college of Dublin City University, is a vibrant and innovative<br />
centre of excellence in Education and the Humanities. It is one of the largest such<br />
institutions in Ireland, with approximately 2,500 students enrolled on a range of<br />
undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Situated centrally in<br />
Drumcondra Village, the campus also houses the Education Research Centre,<br />
Educational Disadvantage Centre, Drumcondra Education Centre, Centre for<br />
Citizenship and Human Rights Education, The Centre for Children's Literature and<br />
Cultural <strong>St</strong>udies and the National Induction Programme for Teachers. A major new<br />
building programme is currently underway.<br />
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT<br />
The Department has more than 50 full-time staff members, making it one of the<br />
largest academic departments in the country. As well as providing programmes at<br />
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the Department has an active national and<br />
international research profile and makes a significant contribution to policy<br />
development and critique in the sector.<br />
The Department is currently focused on restructuring its initial teacher education<br />
programmes. The Bachelor of Education, our flagship degree with a student<br />
enrolment of 1200, has recently been reaccredited as a four-year programme with<br />
an initial intake in September 2012. The Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary<br />
Teaching) programme will be re-accredited in 2013.<br />

THE POSITION OF ASSISTANT LECTURER/LECTURER IN EDUCATION<br />
The person appointed to this position will be a member of the Education<br />
Department and will be responsible to the Head of the Education Department by<br />
whom the specific duties approved for the post will be allocated. The person will<br />
work collaboratively as part of a team in Ethical and Intercultural Education and<br />
related areas within the Education Department.<br />
The responsibilities at present attached to this position are outlined below. In<br />
addition, the person appointed to this position will be expected to contribute to the<br />
teaching of other areas of Education (as requested by the Head of the Education
Department) in addition to the specialist ones, and to contribute to the wider work<br />
of the Education Department and of the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
It is emphasised that the person appointed to this position will be expected to<br />
undertake new duties as assigned by the Head of the Education Department or<br />
<strong>College</strong> authorities within changing/emerging <strong>College</strong> work and structures.<br />
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE APPOINTEE:<br />
The appointee will have responsibilities from among the following:<br />
Planning, teaching and examining courses in Ethics and Education as part of<br />
core education courses on the BEd and Graduate Diploma in Education;<br />
Planning, teaching and examining courses in Ethics and Education as part of<br />
the major and minor specialisms and electives in the BEd and Graduate<br />
Diploma;<br />
Overseeing the administration and organisation of Ethics and Education<br />
modules in initial teacher education;<br />
Planning, teaching and examining courses as part of a team in Ethical and<br />
Intercultural Education at inservice, MEd and doctoral level;<br />
Contributing to the development of new courses in Ethical and Intercultural<br />
Education;<br />
Maintaining an active research and publications profile, consonant with the<br />
strategic research goals of the Department and the <strong>College</strong>;<br />
Supervising Teaching Practice, with its attendant duties of supporting and<br />
evaluating students on school visits, writing reports, and attending relevant<br />
meetings;<br />
Contributing to the wider teaching of the Education Department as required<br />
by the Head of the Education Department;<br />
Contributing to shared programmes of research, capacity building and<br />
resource development with colleagues in Ethical and Intercultural Education,<br />
the Education Department and the wider <strong>College</strong> and University community.<br />
Collaborating in programme review and development in the Education<br />
Department.<br />
GENERAL DUTIES OF THE POST:<br />
The person appointed will be expected to participate in and contribute to the<br />
work of the <strong>College</strong> as follows:<br />
Contribute to the formulation and development of policy within the college<br />
through meetings of Academic Council, of the Education Department and<br />
other meetings as requested;<br />

Participate in interviews for entrants to <strong>College</strong> courses as specified by the<br />
<strong>College</strong> authorities;<br />
Meet with visiting lecturers/educationalists and others as requested by<br />
the Head of the Education Department or <strong>College</strong> authorities;<br />
Liaise with schools, teachers, inspectors, parent groups, NCCA, and other<br />
relevant groups, organisations and individuals;<br />
Assist with the general administrative work in the Education Department;<br />
Assist with promoting the work of the <strong>College</strong> through, for example, Open<br />
Days, visits to schools and conferences as requested.<br />
Be available for consultation with students and contribute to the well-being<br />
of students.<br />
PERSON SPECIFICATION:<br />
Qualifications:<br />
The successful candidate will have a post-graduate qualification in education,<br />
preferably at doctoral level, in areas related to intercultural/multicultural education,<br />
human rights education and ethical education in the context of primary education.<br />
Some experience of philosophical and comparative religious perspectives in<br />
education would also be desirable<br />
Knowledge & Experience (Essential & Desirable)<br />
The appointee will have a strong background in intercultural /multicultural/<br />
human rights education/ethical education and primary education.<br />
The appointee will show an understanding of the complex philosophical and<br />
political issues underlying the approaches to ethical and comparative<br />
religious education<br />
Experience in teacher education is highly desirable.<br />
Skills & Competencies<br />
S/he will have strong interpersonal skills and good administrative and<br />
organisational skills.<br />
The appointee will be competent in the use of ICT.<br />
The appointee will have proven research skills with an evident capacity to<br />
develop a programme of research in the areas of education identified above.<br />
The <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to reassign staff to other areas as appropriate and<br />
necessary.<br />
Salary Scale: The appointment will be made on the Assistant Lecturer or Lecturer<br />
Scale at a point in line with current Government Pay Policy<br />
