INFORMATION RELATING TO THE POST OF ASSISTANT LECTURER/LECTURER IN
EDUCATION WITH EXPERTISE IN ETHICAL AND INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION
– 3 YEAR CONTRACT
St Patrick’s College, a college of Dublin City University, is a vibrant and innovative
centre of excellence in Education and the Humanities. It is one of the largest such
institutions in Ireland, with approximately 2,500 students enrolled on a range of
undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Situated centrally in
Drumcondra Village, the campus also houses the Education Research Centre,
Educational Disadvantage Centre, Drumcondra Education Centre, Centre for
Citizenship and Human Rights Education, The Centre for Children's Literature and
Cultural Studies and the National Induction Programme for Teachers. A major new
building programme is currently underway.
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
The Department has more than 50 full-time staff members, making it one of the
largest academic departments in the country. As well as providing programmes at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the Department has an active national and
international research profile and makes a significant contribution to policy
development and critique in the sector.
The Department is currently focused on restructuring its initial teacher education
programmes. The Bachelor of Education, our flagship degree with a student
enrolment of 1200, has recently been reaccredited as a four-year programme with
an initial intake in September 2012. The Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary
Teaching) programme will be re-accredited in 2013.

THE POSITION OF ASSISTANT LECTURER/LECTURER IN EDUCATION
The person appointed to this position will be a member of the Education
Department and will be responsible to the Head of the Education Department by
whom the specific duties approved for the post will be allocated. The person will
work collaboratively as part of a team in Ethical and Intercultural Education and
related areas within the Education Department.
The responsibilities at present attached to this position are outlined below. In
addition, the person appointed to this position will be expected to contribute to the
teaching of other areas of Education (as requested by the Head of the Education

Department) in addition to the specialist ones, and to contribute to the wider work
of the Education Department and of the College.
It is emphasised that the person appointed to this position will be expected to
undertake new duties as assigned by the Head of the Education Department or
College authorities within changing/emerging College work and structures.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE APPOINTEE:
The appointee will have responsibilities from among the following:
Planning, teaching and examining courses in Ethics and Education as part of
core education courses on the BEd and Graduate Diploma in Education;
Planning, teaching and examining courses in Ethics and Education as part of
the major and minor specialisms and electives in the BEd and Graduate
Diploma;
Overseeing the administration and organisation of Ethics and Education
modules in initial teacher education;
Planning, teaching and examining courses as part of a team in Ethical and
Intercultural Education at inservice, MEd and doctoral level;
Contributing to the development of new courses in Ethical and Intercultural
Education;
Maintaining an active research and publications profile, consonant with the
strategic research goals of the Department and the College;
Supervising Teaching Practice, with its attendant duties of supporting and
evaluating students on school visits, writing reports, and attending relevant
meetings;
Contributing to the wider teaching of the Education Department as required
by the Head of the Education Department;
Contributing to shared programmes of research, capacity building and
resource development with colleagues in Ethical and Intercultural Education,
the Education Department and the wider College and University community.
Collaborating in programme review and development in the Education
Department.
GENERAL DUTIES OF THE POST:
The person appointed will be expected to participate in and contribute to the
work of the College as follows:
Contribute to the formulation and development of policy within the college
through meetings of Academic Council, of the Education Department and
other meetings as requested;

Participate in interviews for entrants to College courses as specified by the
College authorities;
Meet with visiting lecturers/educationalists and others as requested by
the Head of the Education Department or College authorities;
Liaise with schools, teachers, inspectors, parent groups, NCCA, and other
relevant groups, organisations and individuals;
Assist with the general administrative work in the Education Department;
Assist with promoting the work of the College through, for example, Open
Days, visits to schools and conferences as requested.
Be available for consultation with students and contribute to the well-being
of students.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a post-graduate qualification in education,
preferably at doctoral level, in areas related to intercultural/multicultural education,
human rights education and ethical education in the context of primary education.
Some experience of philosophical and comparative religious perspectives in
education would also be desirable
Knowledge & Experience (Essential & Desirable)
The appointee will have a strong background in intercultural /multicultural/
human rights education/ethical education and primary education.
The appointee will show an understanding of the complex philosophical and
political issues underlying the approaches to ethical and comparative
religious education
Experience in teacher education is highly desirable.
Skills & Competencies
S/he will have strong interpersonal skills and good administrative and
organisational skills.
The appointee will be competent in the use of ICT.
The appointee will have proven research skills with an evident capacity to
develop a programme of research in the areas of education identified above.
The College reserves the right to reassign staff to other areas as appropriate and
necessary.
Salary Scale: The appointment will be made on the Assistant Lecturer or Lecturer
Scale at a point in line with current Government Pay Policy
