Workshop Description
As the giant oil and gas fields of the world mature, the monitoring of production-related changes
becomes crucial to sustain, optimise and improve their immense production levels. The Society of
Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) are the organisers of this
workshop, in a first joint effort of its kind. This workshop will take a multidisciplinary approach to
discuss the more relevant advances in the application of concepts, models, techniques, workflows and
decision processes related to the monitoring of hydrocarbon reservoirs, with a focus on the applications
and possible consequences for giant fields.
As a result of recent developments, the integration of time-lapsed petroleum engineering data and
dynamic models with geophysical data is the key element for the quantitative interpretation of the
changes in reservoirs parameters that result from production and depletion strategies applied through
time. Not all monitoring techniques and successful cases have been developed for giant fields, for
different reasons, and this workshop will analyse the applicability and challenges to expand time-lapse
monitoring to large-scale reservoirs and areas.
The workshop will encompass the best practices, successful case histories and also lessons learnt in
the following topics:
• Time-lapse geophysical and petroleum engineering monitoring
• Saturation, pressure and compaction detection and changes through time
• Effects of production in raw and modelled engineering and geophysical data
• Up-scaling from well to seismic in dynamic modelling
• Recent case-histories and examples of time-lapse applications feasible for giant fields
• Research in rock physics, seismic processing, coupled flow-geomechanics and well logging for
time-lapse monitoring purposes
• New tools and emerging technologies in reservoir monitoring
• Economics and challenges of time-lapse monitoring for application in giant fields
This workshop will bring together a number of global experts in reservoir monitoring to discuss the
technical and economic feasibility of these applications, issues and challenges. The workshop will also
provide the opportunity to assess and discuss different case studies and pilots of worldwide relevance.
Participants will be able to exchange ideas and build a network of resources from different countries and
companies useful for monitoring giant fields.
WORKSHOP
SPE/SEG Joint Workshop: Giant Fields Monitoring and Development
Schedule
Sunday, 10 April 2011
1700–1800 hours Steering Committee Meeting
1800–1900 hours Speakers/Session Chairmen Meeting
Monday, 11 April 2011
0800–0900 hours Badge Collection and Welcome Coffee
0900–0905 hours Safety Briefing & Fire Exit Information
0905–0930 hours Welcome Address and Opening Remarks
0930–1230 hours Session 1: Data Acquisition for Monitoring Purposes
Major assets present unique challenges in designing acquiring and gaining approval for monitoring field studies. Existing infrastructure and field history can
present obstacles requiring careful deployment for data acquisition. This session will emphasise fit-for-purpose solutions in acquiring and processing data using
appropriate technologies for reservoir management in mature fields.
1230–1330 hours Luncheon and Posters
1330–1630 hours Session 2: Integration and Interpretation
Production effects can be monitored and inferred by using various techniques from both surface and subsurface measurement/acquisition systems. This
session will focus on integrating these different observations to better understand field behaviour, propose adjustments to existing static and dynamic models
and optimise further developments. Case studies will emphasise practical implementations of these advanced techniques reconciling surface and subsurface
recorded production induced effects.
1630–1730 hours Networking/Dinner
Tuesday, 12 April 2011
0830–0900 hours Welcome Coffee
0900–1100 hours Session 3: New Developments and Applications – Panel Session
This session will cover the new techniques, tools, and methods that have a relevant role in the quantification of changes in the reservoir through time. Recent
technological advances from industry and academia will be shown, demonstrating the added value they bring to the monitoring processes, efforts and results
for the field development of green and mature fields. Pilot tests and results in addition to case histories of implementation at full field scale, will be discussed.
Revolutionary advances from other science and technical areas will be considered, as they could bring a new approach to the oilfield monitoring studies,
expediting results or minimising costs.
1100–1130 hours Coffee Break and Posters
1130–1330 hours Session 4: Economics – Panel Session
One of the most important aspects of an effective monitoring project is the economic feasibility of its application at field scale. The oil price has been a triggering
factor in the approval and implementation of many monitoring projects, due to the high costs of seismic and non-seismic acquisition in a repeated, time-lapse
framework. The quantification of the added value of information in relation to the several parameters of development of an oilfield is therefore crucial to the
approval process of these kinds of projects within the oil companies. The analysis of cost-value relation in monitoring projects will be addressed in this panel
session, where best practices will be discussed by international panelists that will bring their experience and different corporate approaches to this important
matter.
1330–1400 hours Luncheon
1600–1830 hours Visit to Burj Khalifa and Downtown Area (Timing TBC)
Wednesday, 13 April 2011
0830–0900 hours Welcome Coffee
0900–1200 hours Session 5: Successful Modelling and Feasibility Studies for Monitoring
A successful field development of a giant field relies heavy on successful reservoir simulation. Usually static geological models are huge and capture more
detail. It is a significant challenge to retain geological complexities during up-scaling and requires sophisticated software and advanced computing power.
Successful history match 4D seismic has been proved a very useful tool for helping history match. Presently, it is accepted the 4D in carbonates is very difficult
due to the nature of the rock. It is critical to perform a feasibility study, which usually requires good rock physics such as gassmann fluid substitution. If the
feasibility study is positive, successful 4D campaign requires detailed interpretation and comprehensive integration, results interpretation will provide critical
value to static and dynamic modelling.
1200–1300 hours Luncheon and Posters
1300–1500 hours Session 6: Managing Uncertainty: Risk and Environment
This session will focus on the role of monitoring in mitigating environmental and safety risks. The need for monitoring has expanded to cover a broader
spectrum within the industry in the past few years. Focused monitoring will result in better production optimisation and well integrity. This will collectively
result in a higher recovery rate, yet at a higher cost and associated data management challenges especially in giant fields.
