UCSD Alumni 2010–2011 Annual Report

The University’s year-long 50th Anniversary celebrations reminded us that
UC San Diego is one of the most notable success stories in the world.
And its graduates, our alumni community of nearly 140,000 worldwide,
are the main expression of that success. They are UC San Diego, the reason
it exists. And as we look ahead to the next 50 years, there’s no doubt
that this University, its students and alumni, will continue to embrace the
spirit of innovation, discovery and bold entrepreneurial drive.
This Annual Report of the past fiscal year, July 1, 2010 – June 30,
2011, shows that UCSD Alumni (your alumni association) is poised to
make a powerful leap forward in engaging our alumni. We look forward
to continuing to provide alumni with meaningful connections to the University,
each other and current students to help ensure that UC San Diego,
and every alumnus, remains world-class. Together, our journey continues.
With Triton pride,
This year, the University celebrated its 50th Anniversary. From
November 18, when members of the classes of 1966-1972 joined
students, staff and faculty for Founders’ Day, to Green Open House:
A Living Laboratory in April and to Alumni Weekend in June, UC San
Diego alumni showed pride in their alma mater’s coming of age.
In honor of UC San Diego’s 50th Anniversary, and the 140,000
alumni worldwide, all graduates were recognized as members of
UCSD Alumni (formerly the UCSD Alumni Association).
UC San Diego’s 50th anniversary by publishing two commemorative
issues in September and May. The cover of the
September issue reflected the anniversary and also included
an eight-page gatefold charting a “sampling of UCSD highlights”
over 50 years. The May 2011 issue featured the portraits
of the 50 alumni leaders, recognized at the Alumni Celebration:
Alumni Discovery Initiative
Comprised of 23 student ambassadors, the Alumni Discovery Initiative
contacted 1,149 alumni and successfully interviewed 484, bringing
the program total to over 1,000 alumni interviewed since its launch in
early 2009. Student ambassadors continue to play a critical role in
engaging alumni with UC San Diego, verifying and updating alumni
information, marketing key campus and alumni initiatives, and identifying
special-interest and affinity-engagement opportunities.
Regional Outreach
In June 2011, UCSD Alumni’s new Outreach and Engagement team
announced the addition of four full-time staff, each charged with
meeting 500 graduates (outside San Diego) from two regions with
the largest alumni population: Los Angeles and the Bay Area. These
officers live full-time in their region and return to San Diego once
per quarter to meet with campus colleagues. The goal is to engage
thousands of alumni through meaningful, one-on-one interaction.
UCSD Near You
Now in its sixth year, nearly 500 alumni attended six events in San
Diego, Sacramento and Washington, D.C. with topics ranging from
children’s literature in an e-reader age with Seth Lerer, dean of arts
and humanities to a discussion of energy independence with Tony
Haymet, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and a
deeper look at the book, Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of
Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to
Global Warming with Naomi Oreskes, professor and science historian.
Alumni Clubs
Regional alumni clubs (formerly chapters) grew significantly with new groups springing up in
locations as far afield as London, South Korea and Vietnam. Clubs saw an increase in alumni
participation, with 3,047 alumni attending nearly 100 events.
These regional clubs (over 25 around the world) help alumni connect to each other and to the
University with opportunities for social and professional networking. Regional alumni clubs hosted
welcome events for UC San Diego’s newest graduates, career nights for mid-career alumni, and
the annual Summer Send-Off Picnic with alumni volunteers greeting the newest members of the
University community—freshmen and transfer students—before they arrive on campus.
Regional alumni clubs added eight new locations, including Boston, Hawaii, Latin America,
London, Portland, Singapore, South Korea and Vietnam.
Professional networks have engaged over 1,000 alumni with the addition of Capitol Tritons,
Financial Professionals Network, Legal Alliance, and Educators Network. The Entertainment
Alliance was established in 2009. These groups publish professional directories, host networking
events, and build relationships with companies seeking to recruit UCSD students.
Volunteers
In addition, 2,453 alumni volunteers served as event planners, webinar hosts, career
advisers, student recruiters, legislative advocates, scholarship application readers and
more. Also, 40 alumni personally called more than 800 admitted students as part of the
do you
advocate
for UC
San Diego?
Are you one of the 2,017 alumni who
advocate on behalf of UC San Diego?
Due to significant system-wide budget
cuts, advocacy efforts remain an essential
function of UCSD Alumni, working in partnership
with State and Local Government
Relations at UC San Diego.
Launched in conjunction with the
annual UC Day in Sacramento, the new
advocacy advertising campaign, “Will
UCSD Be There For Me?”, captured 767
alumni advocates with more than 2,352
letters sent to government officials in just
three days. In total, 13 e-advocacy campaigns
generated 13,403 letters to elected
officials with 89 percent of the messages
coming from alumni.
This year, UCSD Alumni launched
Capitol Tritons, a professional network for
alumni working in government, politics
and public policy. This new group, based
in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., will
work closely with UCSD Alumni staff and
board members to increase opportunities
to strengthen the effectiveness of alumni
Alumni Giving Makes History
If you were one of the 8,082 alumni who made a gift this past year to UC
San Diego, thank you! The 2010-2011 Alumni Participation Campaign
was the most successful in UC San Diego history! The campaign goal of
8,000 gifts was exceeded, showing that despite tough economic times,
alumni are still willing to invest in UC San Diego and higher education.
Alumni gifts support many areas of campus including: scholarships
and fellowships for ambitious and motivated students; seed money for
new research and innovative programs; and faculty recruitment and
retention efforts. Alumni participation is a key factor in college and university
rankings, including U.S. News & World Report. Parents and students
compare these rankings when making enrollment decisions, while corporations
and foundations consider alumni participation when determining
programs to fund. With the increase in alumni support and other private
contributions, UC San Diego will be able to remain one of the nation’s top
Everyone is a Member
This bold change inaugurated during the year opened membership
to all 140,000 alumni, giving them access to many
privileges. Although everyone is a member, it is necessary to
activate that membership by signing up online. During the year,
7,678 alumni activated their online profile to be recognized as
a “general member.” Of those who activated their profile, 68
percent had never had a prior relationship with UCSD Alumni.
These members receive special event invitations, campus and
alumni news, as well as special discount savings on everything
from local attractions to continuing education programs.
Annual gifts are vital to the continued success of UC San
Chancellor’s Associates
Chancellor’s Associate gifts of $1,500 or
they arise, while also supporting ongoing
programs, such as undergraduate scholarships
and faculty achievement awards, to
recognize the creativity and effectiveness of
our extraordinary professors.
This year, Chancellor’s Associates in -
creased giving by 28 percent ($723,655 total
(607 donors). Chancellor’s Associates
alumni donors increased by 5 percent, while
Chancellor’s Associates Young Alumni
More than half of Chancellor’s Associates
Alumni Leadership Scholarships
Private support to UC San Diego has the power to transform lives and benefit entire communities.
Since 1994, UCSD Alumni has proudly supported student scholarships. Generous
donations from alumni and sponsorship of the annual Awards for Excellence Celebration
have increased the alumni scholarship endowment to $3.6 million.
In addition to financial need, the Alumni Leadership Scholarship is awarded to individuals
who have demonstrated outstanding academic and community leadership while at UC San
Diego. This year, UCSD Alumni awarded 47 Alumni Leadership Scholarships valued at
$2,000 each.
The program has raised $1,522,578 and 28 alumni have established endowed scholarships
for their families’ legacy. Seven were added this year. This program, based on a matching
gift model utilizing UCSD Alumni’s scholarship endowments, has provided $334,000 in
funding to 125 students, as of June 28, 2011.
Student Telephone Outreach
If you’ve ever received a call from UC San Diego, chances are a current student is on the
other line. The Telephone Outreach Program, managed by private vendor Ruffalo Cody,
spent 4,624 hours calling 52,154 alumni prospects. This year, student callers raised
$825,673.50 in pledged dollars through the program, with $335,959, or 40 percent,
from 3,319 alumni.
There are three components to every call: Updating contact information, building a relationship
between the alumni and UC San Diego, and raising money for the University. Student
callers frequently answer questions about the latest campus news and invite alumni back to
campus to see its ever-changing landscape. Next time you see “UC San Diego” on your caller
ID, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and chat with a current Triton.
UC San Diego Alumni Weekend, June 16 to 19, brought more than 2,000 graduates back
to campus for four days of exclusive events, providing them with opportunities to reconnect
and celebrate their alma mater’s 50th Anniversary.
It all began on Thursday night, June 16, with “Inspiring Minds: A Special Evening with UC
San Diego Faculty” at the Ida and Cecil Green Faculty Club. A select group of faculty mingled
with alumni, met with former students and discussed their cutting-edge research and current
projects.
Then on Friday, alumni, friends and “future Tritons” enjoyed exclusive after-hours access
to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, complete with a kelp tank diver show, music by the Coral
Reefers and educational activities for the entire family.
On Saturday, June 18, UCSD Alumni hosted a Surf Invitational and Beach Party at Black’s
Beach, a family-friendly event with games, music and a picnic lunch made from locally grown
ingredients. More than 100 alumni and families watched the winning team, “The Team to
Beat” (with surfers Garth Engelhorn, Marshall ’03, Theo Fedoruk, Muir ’03, Dylan Norris,
Marshall ’01, and Oly Norris, Marshall ’01) take the Paul Saltman Trophy, named in honor
of the legendary UC San Diego professor and local surfer.
That evening, in honor of the University’s 50th Anniversary, 600 alumni and friends gathered
for the UCSD Alumni Celebration recognizing 50 alumni visionaries, innovators and
leaders. Proceeds from the night benefited the Alumni Leadership Scholarship Endowment,
valued at over $3 million.
The weekend’s activities concluded with an al fresco brunch under the legendary Sun God.
