Once again in 2010 the RECORD is 

planning to present five weeks worth of 

collectable publications for footy fans 

for the second Wrest Point State League 

finals series. 

In this first edition we have our popular 

articles, updates and club information 

and also special articles on the history of 

state football finals, a table of premiers 

and the awards that will be on offer. 

The games being played feature all 6 

teams competing for the title. North 

Hobart and North Launceston play in the 

elimination game, while the two Magpie 

teams and the mighty Clarence and 

Launceston will also have a qualifying 

final in what will be the longest known 

finals series in Australian senior football. 

Finally, have you heard about the 

innovation the Wrest Point State League 

is adopting to recognize it’s best and 

fairest player? Find out in this edition 

how the Tassie Medal count will be 

conducted in the pages of the Record 

over the final 3 weeks of the Finals Series 

and announced live at this year’s Wrest 

Point State League Grand Final.

VIEW FROM HERE | Leading TSL Clubs embrace change 

Recently AFL Tasmania has reviewed all levels 

and aspects of our game in Tasmania below the 

TSL competition. 

Indirectly this review should also have an impact 

on the TSL competition, specifically in terms of the 

attitude and approach to how TSL leaders wish 

to present and promote the TSL competition over 

the next decade. 

Overall the leaders of competitions below the TSL, 

in all three regions, are actually very supportive of 

the Wrest Point State League competition. What 

they aren’t supportive of is an attitude that the 

State League is the only important element of 

Tasmanian football. 

The leaders of football below the TSL want TSL 

clubs to display leadership within their given 

communities (or development zones). At the 

moment leaders of football competitions are 

sceptical about the agenda of TSL clubs and AFL 

Tasmania. They want to work in cooperation; 

however, at the moment they understandably 

can’t see what benefits their respective clubs will 

receive by doing so. 

The leaders of the NTFL, NTFA and SFL are very 

supportive of the decision of AFL Tasmania to 

remove the Club reserves competition, because 

this initiative has the potential to significantly 

benefit them. However, what they have witnessed 

publicly from some TSL clubs is very strong 

resistance to an initiative that would help them. 

They have also witnessed AFL Tasmania, in 

support of TSL clubs, implement a policy that 

demands the most talent young players in 

Tasmania must play at a TSL club if they wish to 

represent their State at any level. A number of 

these talented young players have never been 

part of a TSL club; however, AFL Tasmania is 

demanding that they play in the TSL competition. 

What the leaders of the NTFL, NTFA and SFL 

witness is an attitude of all take and no support in 

return from TSL clubs and AFL Tasmania. 

However, some TSL clubs are beginning to 

change, which is fantastic! A number of TSL 

clubs are starting to engage in a meaningful way 

with clubs below them. Some of the TSL clubs 

are beginning to embrace the notion of ‘giving 

something back’ to their ‘feeder clubs’. 

This level of leadership is what AFL Tasmania 

will continue to encourage and support. The TSL 

clubs and AFL Tasmania don’t need to apologise 

for wanting the best young players in Tasmania to 

be playing in the TSL competition – but – the TSL 

clubs have to give something back! 

The best support TSL clubs can provide to their 

‘feeder clubs’ is referral of players who aren’t 

good enough to be playing at the highest level in 

Tasmania. 

Congratulations to those TSL clubs leaders who 

are displaying leadership by understanding that 

by ‘giving something back’, you can genuinely 

engage with your ‘feeder clubs’ for your mutual 

benefit.

PROFILE | Scott Stephens 

Scott Stephens secured the RACT Player of the Year Award with a 

point in the Blues final game against Hobart giving him a 2 point 

victory over North Launceston’s Zane Murphy. The former Tassie 

Mariner and Devil is a triple premiership player and club captain 

at Launceston. A full report on Scott’s outstanding season will be 

provided in next week’s RECORD.

DEVONPORT 

After a hard-fought win against North 

Launceston on Saturday the Devonport 

Magpies play Glenorchy in the qualifying final 

at the Oval tonight. We wish the boys every 

success now we have reached “the business 

end” of the season. 

Both the Reserves and Under 18’s played 

their last games for the season last Saturday, 

and we thank them for their commitment and 

efforts throughout 2010. 

A big “Thank You” to Dean “Bull” Cullen who 

took charge of the Reserves, and the boys did 

an excellent job throughout the season facing 

at times what were insurmountable odds. 

Whilst it is disappointing we won’t have the 

Reserves next year I am sure the new Colts 

competition will provide an excellent and 

exciting pathway for aspiring young players 

who wish to play at the elite level.

A very important game ahead of us on Sunday 

as we play the elimination final against North 

Hobart. The team played extremely well 

against Devonport last weekend and were 

unfortunate to lose by a small margin of 10 

points. With so much hinging on the outcome 

of today’s game, we are assured of an excellent 

game of football and hopefully a win which 

will take us further into the finals campaign. 

Playing away is always a tough call but the boys 

have shown they are more than competitive at 

all grounds. Well done boys on a hard fought

TASSIE MEDAL | Recognising Tasmania’s best and fairest player 

The Wrest Point Tasmania State League 

presents a best and fairest medal for the 

competition’s leading player. The Tassie 

Medal was the name chosen in 2009 by 

the 10 competing clubs and the 2010 

champion will soon be crowned. 

The name ‘Tassie Medal’ was first used 

by the Australian National Football 

Council and was awarded to the best 

and fairest player at Australian National 

Carnivals which were contested 

between 1908 and 1988. The original 

Tassie Medal was named in honour of 

an Australian Football administrator whose 

name was Eric Tassie. Tasmania produced 

one winner of the original Tassie Medal in Terry 

Cashion. The Tasmanian Team of the Century 

rover and Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame Icon 

won the award at the Brisbane Carnival in 1950. 

The new Tasmanian version of the Tassie Medal 

is not named in honour of any individual, but is 

rather a common shortened colloquial name 

for our great island home. In that sense it is 

an appropriate choice and gives a modern less 

formal name reflective of the young players who 

make up the Wrest Point Tasmania State League. 

In a further innovation the first Tassie Medal count 

and announcement will be undertaken during the 

finals series. This method was successfully applied 

for the first time in 2009 when Devonport’s Kurt 

Heazlewood took the inaugural award.

Commencing in Round 2 of the Finals Series 

the Record will publish the progressive top vote 

getters and we will reduce the number of players 

in contention each week. The winner of the 

award will be announced live on the big screen to 

all spectators in attendance at this year’s Wrest 

Point Tasmania State League Grand Final at 

either Bellerive Oval or Aurora Stadium.

our great game | Tasmanian State Football Premierships 

Tasmanian football clubs have competed for a 

‘State Premiership’ on and off for around 100 

years. The governing leagues of Tasmanian 

football inaugurated an official State 

Premiership in 1909 when the Premier from 

the southern based TFL, namely Cananore (of 

Hobart), played against the northern based 

NTFA premiership team, Launceston. 

The State Premiership series became hugely 

popular from 1928 up until a dispute between 

the TFL and NTFA halted the series in 1951. 

The year 1928 was significant because the City 

Club (of Launceston) had recruited the high 

profile Victorian Roy Cazaly to coach and he 

duly delivered the first state title for a Northern 

Tasmanian club in his first season. 

The State Premiership series resumed in 1954 

after the North-West Football Union (NWFU) 

successfully gained equal status with the NTFA 

and TFL. Subsequently, the State Premiership 

became a contest between the Premiership 

team from the 3 major Tasmanian regions. The 

period 1954 to 1973 became the second golden 

era of Tasmanian state football such was the 

interest and success of the series of games that 

was conducted to culminate each season and 

determine the best team in Tasmania. 

However, new cracks began to appear in 1974, 

1977 and 1979 when the three leagues could 

not agree on the timing of the finals series or 

their commitment to the concept. Ultimately, the 

prolonged decline of the series in the early 1980s 

became a major catalyst for the formation of a 

Statewide League in 1986-87. 

The subsequent Tasmanian State League that 

was conducted up until the end of 2000 was 

very successful in attracting high quality players 

and coaches to Tasmania. The State League 

was very popular until a number of Clubs began 

to fail financially and were unable to continue in 

the competition. 

Regional football resumed in 2001 across 

Tasmania, but there was an inability to progress 

a State Premiership series for 8 long years 

despite constant speculation and a failed 

attempt in 2008. 

The State Premiership series has been disrupted 

on numerous occasions due to world wars, the 

influenza pandemic of 1919 and internecine 

disputes in the early 1950s, on and off in the 

1970s and 1980s and again in the last decade. 

Historically there is a correlation between the 

relative strength and interest in a Tasmanian 

State Finals series or league and the strength 

of Tasmanian football at representative level. In 

this regard we can expect if the new Wrest Point 

Tasmanian State League is able to gain traction 

amongst football players, corporate and media 

supporters and fans, that a new fourth era of 

Tasmanian State football will dawn and this will 

strengthen Tasmanian football. 

This series of articles will provide a summary of all 

Tasmanian State Premiership games and a table 

of premiers and runners-up. As well, there is a 

feature on the greatest State Premiership games 

from the 4 major eras starting with the 1920s 

and 1930s. A special ‘Fantasy Final’ series will 

also been provided to fill in some gaps in the 

history of Tasmanian State Football Premierships.

TROPHIES | Wrest Point Tasmania State League Premiership 2010 

The Wrest Point Tasmania State League will 

issue a range of traditional trophies for the best 

teams, coaches, players and umpires in 2010. 

These include: 

FLAG - The traditional reward for the premier 

team is the provision of a Flag or Pennant. The 

presentation is made either on Grand Final day or 

at the commencement of the new season when 

the Flag is unfurled at the winning Club’s first 

home game of the season. 

CUP - There have been many Premiership Cups 

presented to winning teams in competitions 

across Tasmania. The VFL / AFL only commenced 

presenting the now famous AFL Premiership 

Cup in 1960, but in Tasmania a perpetual cup, 

called the Bulldog Cup, was presented for the 

Tasmanian State Premiership team from the very 

early days of the competition. The whereabouts 

of the Bulldog Cup is not known, but the 

distinctive trophies presented to all teams who 

participated in the first Tasmanian State League 

are firmly entrenched in the respective winner’s 

trophy cabinets. The Clarence FC won 5 state 

premiership cups during their golden era from 

1993 to 2000 and added to that in 2009 with the 

inaugural Wrest Point Tasmania State League. 

MEDALS - The issuing of medals to the players 

participating in the Grand Final commenced in 

the VFL / AFL in 1979, when the first Norm Smith 

Medal for best on ground was issued to Carlton’s 

Wayne Harmes. Up until 1982 medals were also 

issued to the players of the runner-up team, but in 

1981 Collingwood ruckman Peter Moore tossed 

his medal into the crowd in disgust at receiving 

his third successive runner up medal (Collingwood 

lost in 1979, 1980 and 1981). The VFL / AFL 

discontinued the practice of presenting runner 

up medals at that time. This year a Premiership 

Medal will be presented to the players and the 

participating umpires will be recognized. The 

best player on the ground will be awarded the 

prestigious Darrel Baldock Medal.

GRASS ROOTS | Demons school holiday footy clinic 

After holding previous clinic’s in our 

development zones of Huonville and Cygnet, 

North Hobart FC presented a successful footy 

skills day at Geeveston. On a sunny winter’s 

day, 70 excited children aged 6 to 13 years 

attended and were mentored by North Hobart 

senior players Justin Veitch, Geoffrey Unsworth, 

Ben Free, Bayden Bryant and Club President 

Darryn Perry. 

The juniors were instructed on the basic AFL skills. 

Some of the children and parents had travelled 

from as far as Hobart and Bruny Island primary 

schools to be there. Five of the most promising 

children were presented gifts courtesy of North 

Hobart FC. There was a barbeque at the end of the 

day provided by the Kermandie Junior FC. 

Demons host Gala day between Cygnet and 

Sorell at Kermandie Oval 

North Hobart FC agreed to host a Gala day with 

our zone club Cygnet in our recruiting heartland 

of the Huon Valley community. North Hobart 

had a bye in the TSL roster on this weekend and 

because of a large number of injuries to our 

feeder club we provided several players on one 

week temporary permits for Cygnet under 18’s, 

reserves and seniors. 

We also provided support staff for Cygnet that 

included President, Darryn Perry performed as 

senior runner, Club Coach, Clinton Brown gave 

up his free weekend to act as line coach, several 

Board members filled various roles of Interchange 

Stewards, Umpire security. A large number of 

North Hobart supporters travelled down to the 

match wearing their red and blue colours. 

Former North 2003 premiership, player Andrew 

Cox helped out with two simultaneous Auskick’s 

games for children aged 6-13 as a curtain raiser 

event before the senior game This was a great 

success and we had 40 plus juniors participate. 

The Auskick games were sponsored by Mitre 10 

stores in Cygnet and Geeveston. 

The weather was great on a day where there was 

only one senior game of footy held in the Huon 

and about 1500 attended. North Hobart players, 

Tom Nichols, James Faulkner and Jarryd Atkins 

all played well for Cygnet in their 52 point victory 

against Sorell. Many thanks to Cygnet’s Brett 

Direen who has a great “can do” work attitude 

and makes events like this happen. 

Often in the past the North Hobart club had 

promised development support to our feeder 

clubs in the Huon and followed by no action. This 

year because of our hands-on president, Darryn 

Perry and our proactive football department we 

are now starting to deliver on these promises and 

build excellent relationships.

YOUNG GUNS | A week in the life 

This year the Tassie Mariners took on 

Queensland in Round 1 of the NAB AFL National 

Championship. Big ruckman Andrew ‘Flipper’ 

Phillips took time out to provide an insight into 

what goes on in the lead up to the game. 

Monday - Medical check-ups, weights sessions, 

touch work and team meeting at Bellerive. These 

go from 5-7pm. I arrive slightly late due to work, 

this often happens as I am an apprentice builder 

and we can be sent just about anywhere in 

southern Tasmania. My work hours are 7:30am 

till 4pm Monday to Friday. Work is very good to 

me however, allowing me days off for games and 

training that involve travelling interstate or up to 

Launceston. I text coach Mathew Armstrong letting 

him know I would be late, otherwise he would have 

probably given me 400s to do. 

Tuesday - Weights and stretching session at 

Bellerive and pool session. I did not have time to 

get the weights done on Monday so I did a modified 

session with fitness coach Dave Kinsella before 

going to Clarence YMCA pool for a pool conditioning 

and recovery session. 

Wednesday - Full squad training in Launceston. I 

have to get off work early to catch the bus up to 

Aurora stadium. We stop off at Campbell Town 

for a stretch and Subway arriving at Aurora to 

train with everyone in the Academy. After training 

(and an ice bath for recovery which I hate!) Dogga 

reads out the team to travel to Sydney to play 

Queensland. I’m named starting ruckman and 

can’t wait to play. 

Thursday - Personal beach recovery session at a 

beach near Lauderdale. I then go to Lauderdale 

training to show my face around the club and see 

my club team mates before heading home to cook 

up some pasta. 

Friday - We fly out to Sydney, but then we are 

stuck in mini busses for 2 hours as the GPS did 

not work properly. Or the person using put in the 

wrong place?!?! We have a quick touch work 

and stretching session before a team meal and 

meeting. Before going to bed we have to have our 

urine analysed to see how hydrated we are. It’s 

been a long day! 

Saturday - Game day. Good win by the boys and I 

go OK taking a few marks around the ground. It’s a 

bit of a rush to make it to the airport but get there 

OK. We are told to eat as much as we can but 

healthy stuff! 

Sunday - Early weights and recovery session. We 

are given a protein snack after a weights and 

stretching circuit then hop in the water for 5-10 

minutes. It’s full on but professional, so it’s a good 

way of doing footy if you want to improve.

THE WHISTLE BLOWER | Field Umpires lead with experience and youth 

This year a TSL Squad of 30 Field Umpires was 

chosen from the 3 major Tasmanian umpiring 

associations, including: 16 from Hobart; 8 from 

Launceston and 6 from the North West Coast. 

This Squad has officiated in TSL Senior and 

Under 18 matches during the season. The senior 

finals panel for this week is very experienced 

and includes last year’s TSL Grand Final umpires 

Matt Clarke and Nick Foot. Ex VFL Umpires, 

Sam Cure, Shaun Gleeson and Ben Lehner will 

also be officiating. Ray Donoghue is the most 

experienced umpire involved having umpired 

the last Grand Final of the previous State Wide 

League in 2000. Joel Harris, Nick Saltmarsh and 

Sam Rainbird will all be officiating in their first TSL 

Senior final.
