THIS WEEK’S COVER
Last week’s cover featured 9
captains and Clarence coach Brett
Geappen. This week’s cover shows
Nick Paine who is still calling the
shots as Clarence’s on field leader
in 2010.
from the editor
Well we are underway for 2010 and
the Wrest Point State League RECORD
has past its first test. The response
was very positive and readers were
unanimous in their support.
So on with the football and what
an interesting start to the season
with some results not going quite
as predicted. That said the form
of Clarence, North Hobart and
Launceston was as expected and
looked somewhat ominous. The
other Clubs have already been given
a peak of the sort of form that will be
required to reach the top echelon of
the TSL in 2010.
The other exciting aspect of the first
Round of games was the strong
response of the football public
to games at the TCA Ground and
Launceston on Good Friday and also
Devonport Oval and Bellerive Oval
under lights.
The RECORD this week presents our
regular articles, updates and club
/ team information. The ‘Our Great
Game’ article has the first of our
history pieces with a feature on the
Burnie Dockers.
Have a great day at the footy.
V I E W F R O M H E R E | Promote and grow the game
On April 1st at the Launceston Country Club
Resort AFL Tasmania’s Board of Directors,
management team, staff and the leaders from
all ten Wrest Point State League clubs gathered
together with representatives of our sponsors
and media partners to launch year two of our
unique whole of state football competition.
It was positive to take a moment to reflect
on what was a very successful and satisfying
first year of the Wrest Point State League
competition in 2009. It was also interesting to
listen to speeches from our major sponsor, the
Federal Group, presented by their Director of
Entertainment and Gaming, John Mortensen and
from AFL Tasmania’s Chairman, Dominic Baker.
John Mortensen reinforced the exciting
opportunity that the TSL has to build on the
success of our first year and to offer Tasmania’s
business community with a whole of state
sponsorship product that grows in value from
a sponsorship perspective each and every
year of the next three to five years. However,
he also diplomatically delivered one very clear
message, or warning, to AFL Tasmania and
TSL administrators. The message was to use
our best endeavours to ensure disagreements
and disputes between club and competition
leaders remain private and differences of opinion
between administrators are not played out
publicly through the media.
John Mortensen reinforced that sponsors of the
Wrest Point State League want to read about, see
and hear positive and interesting media stories
about TSL players and the promotion of TSL clubs,
games and events. Administrators’ bickering in the
media de-values our product from a sponsorship
perspective and does nothing at all to encourage
the public to support the TSL competition.
Chairman of AFL Tasmania, Dominic Baker,
followed by outlining the importance of competition
between clubs on the playing field; however, when
it comes to off-field activities the focus should be
about collaboration between the same clubs. He
also committed that the role of AFL Tasmania, in
respect to the Wrest Point State League, will be to
continue to support TSL clubs, specifically in areas
of education, however, at the same time we will
challenge traditional views and practices.
An example of challenging traditional views and
opinions is that AFL Tasmania is committed to
building a quality player pathway to the TSL, from
under 18’s directly to the TSL senior competition.
AFL Tasmania will also continue to develop plans
and implement policy that best support growth at
all levels of competition in all areas of Tasmania.
AFL Tasmania’s strategic priority at the moment is
the Wrest Point State League (seniors and under
18’s). However, our Coca-Cola Talent Pathway
Program and supporting all levels and aspects of
our sport outside of the TSL is also a high priority!
starting the season off with two wins.
Our first home game this week will see us
ease into the new sporting facility with the
The room will be a wonderful place to watch
football, the equal of any in the state. Please
direct membership enquiries to Peter Vincent
or Darren Batt.
We hope all supporters will become members
of the club, with supporters packages
available to suit everyone. All supporters
packages include club membership and free
entry to the footy. We are also keen to hear
from any volunteers who might like to lend a
hand around the club.
This week our Dowling McCarthy under
17’s will be participating in the partner
club challenge in Fremantle. Our boys will
play Doncaster as a curtain raiser for the
DEVONPORT
Reality Strikes
The Regional Derby against Burnie delivered
some pleasing results and some disappointing
ones. We had a great crowd of 1600 plus turn
up to see some entertaining football.
Congratulations to our Reserves for winning
their game against South. Against the odds
they all put in and secured a win by 25 points.
Our Under 18’s had a very tight tussle with
Burnie for most of the game but in the end
they were disappointed to lose by 31 points.
We had so many young players displaying
talent and skills and they were able to gain
valuable experience for the coming weeks.
Our seniors were shell-shocked in the first
quarter allowing Burnie to get 5 goals before
they scored. They ended up only losing by 3
points in a very entertaining game. Errol and
the boys will gain a lot from their unexpected
loss to Burnie.
A big ‘thank you’ to all of our volunteers that
worked so hard behind the scenes to make the
day a great success.
Whilst it wasn’t a great Easter Monday for the
club it is only the start of the 2010 TSL season.
We welcome the Hobart Football Club to KGV
today for 3 great games of football. Best of luck
to all Glenorchy teams.
Some interesting statistics from our clash with
Clarence – 10 different players from last year’s
Grand Final side, 15 players under the age of 22
and young Jimmy Webster being our youngest
player just 16 years of age.
C L U B N O T E S | Round 2
Hobart Tigers - 03 6231 3778
President: Philip Baker
Senior Coach: Graeme Fox
HOBART
Another huge Good Friday crowd turned up to
watch the first game of TSL season 2010 and
a big thank you to all of the HFC helpers who
made the day run smoothly.
What a fantastic start to the year for the Under
18s, the young guys kicked off their season
with a thrilling come from behind victory over
North Hobart, who won last year’s Under 17
premiership. After only having 8-10 players
on the track throughout the pre-season, then
facing a deficit of 17 points at ¾ time, it was
fantastic to see the boys kick the first 5 goals
of the last to get up and win.
The reserves and seniors both put in solid
efforts and will be better in a few weeks down
the track when the new faces gel together and
both teams should be aiming to finish in the
top six.
Today we take on Glenorchy and next week it is
Clarence so after the first three rounds all our
teams will know exactly where they are at for
season 2010.
Lauderdale Bombers - 03 6248 7686
President: Phil Giffard
Senior Coach: Darren Winter
LAUDERDALE
Lauderdale FC has been in constant
‘makeover’ mode over the off season. We
have enhanced our playing surface and added
new spectator facilities for our live local footy.
In our Football Department we welcome one of
the states higher profile players and coaches,
Darren Winter, as Club Coach.
Darren (Seniors), Luke Hill (Reserves),
David Lewis (U18’s) are coaches that bring
experience, maturity, and professionalism to
our Club and which we combine with a blend
of our most successful product - home grown
talent and passion!
We also welcome several new and exciting
‘partners’ to our Club, including George Self
Real Estate and MG Robert Plumbing (Aussie
Clean) who join household names: Deaks Fine
Foods (Primo Smallgoods), Rheem Hot Water,
K&D Mitre 10 and Oceana Health & Fitness.
We also recognise the contribution that the
Clarence City Council have provided over the last
few years. Well done to all at the local council.
In closing, we hope you enjoy the contribution
of Lauderdale Bombers to this great game of
ours and what an exciting manner to kick off
the TSL Season. A little North vs South!
President: Mark Thurlow
LAUNCESTON
The Launceston Football Club (IGA Blues)
celebrated the 2010 TSL Season Launch in
the J.D. Allison Function Room at Windsor
Park on Friday 26th March. As per last year it
was our “dress up” Jumper presentation night
and again sponsored by one of our major
corporate partners Bullock Consulting.
The only negative was that Chester couldn’t
be there because of illness or perhaps he
was at home counting his winnings from the
previous Sunday pacing meeting.
Phil Thurlow, our U/18’s coach and General
Manager of Island Block & Paving, was the
lucky winner of our raffle, a framed jumper
and caricature presentation of our Team of
the Century.
Similar to other clubs, our first home game of
the season was approached with excitement
and trepidation. It is pleasing to report that
with the support of Thurlow & Co Scrap Metal
Recyclers, our game day sponsors, and AFL
Tasmania we were able to cater successfully
for our crowd in excess of 2000.
Thanks to our cross town rivals the Northern
Bombers, we were able to provide 3 top
games of Good Friday footy.
North Hobart Demons - 03 6234 3473
President: Darryn Perry
Senior Coach: Clinton Brown
NORTH HOBART
NHFC has put in many hours of work over
the summer, it’s a big commitment to make
and the boys have adjusted to my coaching
techniques well. This is only part of the
journey! It’s like jumping in the car, putting
your seatbelt on and checking your mirrors.
Pre-season is just preparing your body for
the season ahead and we are prepared!
NORTH L’TON
Last week we met Launceston in Round 1,
and whilst the team lost to a very skilled and
competitive side, a lot of positives came from
the game, not the least being the way the new
and former players worked well together as a
team. This afternoon we play host to Devonport
and the boys will be looking to make amends
for last week’s loss.
The Club would like to take this opportunity to
thank its major naming rights sponsor” KWMC”
for their continued support. This year we
welcome new Reserves sponsor in Launceston
Bodyworks, and Under 18 sponsor O’Byrne
Plumbing. Sponsorship plays a vital role to the
Club, and we greatly appreciate the support
given not only by the above, but the many other
businesses that continue to be a part of the
North Launceston Football Club.
Congratulations to Brett Young who turns 50
this week. Everyone is invited to join Brett
at the Function Room this Saturday, 10th
April from 9.00pm to help him celebrate this
milestone birthday
Senior Coach: Dale Chugg
SOUTH L’TON
Today we take on last year’s premiers
Clarence District Football Club at Youngtown
Oval and the clash should be an exciting one
due to both teams having a good first up win.
Both teams have plenty on the line as we
play for the Matthew Westfield Cup. This is
a very special occasion for both teams and I
am sure they would both like to hold onto the
cup for 2010.
Last week we had 7 club debutants play in
our seniors and up to 15 more throughout
the club. We would like to congratulate both
the under 18 and seniors on their first up win
and hope the reserves can get on the board
this week.
Tonight we have a club function being a
“Games Night” kicking off at 7.30pm in our
function room. Come along for enjoyable
evening.
O U R G R E AT G A M E | History comes alive - Burnie Dockers
The Burnie Football Club is in a magnificent
position in that it can boast a 125-year history –
and another century.
From its beginnings as Emu Bay in 1885, the
Burnie Tigers went on to become a powerhouse
club playing in the North-West Football Association,
Burnie Football League, North-West Football Union
and Northern Tasmania Football League.
Along the way the Tigers notched 14 premierships
with an amazing run of six flags in nine years
from 1958 to 1966 – including three consecutive
titles from ’58-‘60. The icing on the cake was a
meritorious State premiership in 1963.
Just nine years after the Tigers started, the Cooee
Bulldogs sprang to life. The club in the green and
gold went on to also claim 14 premierships in the
same competitions, however, the Bulldogs went
one better by winning two well-celebrated State
titles in ’64 and ‘78.
Burnie was a town fiercely divided along club
loyalties.
Cooee became the Burnie Hawks in 1987 when
the club entered the expanded Tasmanian
Football League. In late 1993 and against a
backdrop of a dwindling population in the city the
Tigers and Hawks boards decided to merge with
teams playing in the Hawks’ colours in the TFL.
At the end of 1994 and with North Melbourne
champion Peter German as playing coach, a
historic move was initiated.
With Fremantle Football Club entering the AFL and
Burnie a sea port, German was the main driver
for the Burnie Football Club to adopt the Dockers’
colours and jumper. The bid had two aims – to
put in the past the lingering divide between Tigers
and Bulldogs supporters but more importantly to
create a new history.
The Burnie Dockers, with German at the helm,
went on to challenge southern powerhouse
Clarence for the 1996 and ’97 TFL flags but
ultimately fell short in each grand final denying
the new club premiership honours.
In late 2000, the club withdrew from the then
Statewide League to join the NTFL. Success
immediately followed with Collingwood great Mick
McGuane coaching the seniors to the NTFL flag in
2001, the first of five in succession.
The current crop of State League players and
supporters will enjoy the installation of a Burnie
City sporting hall of fame as part of a major
upgrade of the iconic West Park Oval.
In actual time, the Burnie Football Club is in its
126th year – arguably it’s the 226th season –
given that the brilliant achievements of the Burnie
and Cooee clubs are so indelibly interwoven.
With such a rich background and the foresight
of those who looked to the future, the Burnie
Dockers Football Club has a magnificent platform
to create its own history.
G R A S S R O O T S | Benefits of participating in AFL
Physical
Being physically active helps people become
healthy, and stay healthy! The Australian
Government recommends that children and teens
be active for at least 60 minutes everyday. Playing
Australian Football allows children to be active in a
way that they enjoy, and helps them to get fit and
achieve a healthier weight. Playing and practicing
Australian Football helps children to develop better
fundamental motor skills, like kicking and catching,
and this in turn helps them to continue to be
involved in sport as teenagers. That’s important
because children and teenagers who play
organised sport, like Australian Football, are more
likely to continue to be active as young adults.
Social
Being involved in team sports like Australian
Football helps children and teenagers to
develop important friendship qualities, like
loyalty, companionship and respect for others.
Experiences through sport teach them how to
deal with conflict and provide support for team
mates as well as building up their own selfesteem.
Australian Football gives boys and girls
from different backgrounds, cultures, ability and
social group, the chance to be involved in a team
sport. This is important because being involved
in sport, like Australian Football, offers a way
for different groups in the community to share
a common interest and through that experience
become part of the community.
Psychological
Australian Football helps children be physically
active on a regular basis, and being active
helps children and teenagers be more alert and
concentrate better at school. This in turn helps
young to be more able to learn and achieve better
academic results in school. Additionally, spending
time with other children while playing sport
influences the person they become, teaching
them to be confident and as they grow up.
Educational
Being involved in sports at school, like Australian
Football, gives children and teenagers the
opportunity to become more involved in school
and engage in out-of-school activities in the
local community. Sport at school can be taught
at all year levels, and will help children to learn
important skills, the benefits of being physically
active as well as teaching them appropriate
personal and social behaviour.
TASSIE TIPSTERS | We’re underway in 2010
There was a great response to this competition in
card which was no mean feat given some upsets.
Two players also picked the exact points margin in
the North Hobart v Hobart game so a random draw
was required to select ‘lily’ as the winner.
Lily won the weekly prize of $250 and a TOTE
Sports Radio KB Sherrin.
Well done to the other players who selected
5 winners, but we were a bit surprised to see
‘CaptainMagpie’ in that group as that player has
obviously picked against Devonport and Glenorchy
so go figure!
YOUNG GUNS | Academy camps
Despite Tasmanian’s small size, a fundamental
issue confronting any State sporting program is
the challenge of bringing your group together to
train and prepare.
This year to reduce the amount of travel required
of players the State Under 18 Academy program
held two 2 three day camps during pre-season.
Some of the highlights were:
Matthew Richardson Talls Marking Session
Matthew Richardson and Troy Simmonds spent
an hour working on the finer points of contested
marking with a small group of tall players. Richo
was terrific with the group, reinforcing that it is all
about practising the basic aspects over and over
until they are perfected and sharing some of his
tricks of the trade.
Bikram Hot Yoga
The players participated in a Yoga session in a
room heated to over 35 degrees to learn more
about body control, flexibility and strength. This
was described by several players as the toughest
and most physically demanding activity that they
had ever completed.
Brick Session
Amongst a 5 hour game plan training session at
Cornelian Bay, the tried and true brick circuit was
produced to great effect amongst a generation
of players that have missed the horror preseasons
of the eighties and nineties. Terrific
team building result.
360 Degree Feedback
A review session was held by the playing group
to give individual feedback on player’s strengths
and areas for improvement as well as their
attitudes and commitment. This was conducted
in front of the group, by the group and was
honest and effective.
TIS Draft Camp Testing
Players at Camp 2 underwent full draft camp
testing. This includes the 20m sprint, the agility
test, the beep test and three vertical jump tests.
Rightly or wrongly, these results are trawled
through by the AFL Recruitment system and can
be very significant in the decision making process
heading towards the National Draft in November
Running Technique Session
Well respected athletics sprint coach and Hobart
Football Club Conditioning Coach Damian Lawler
worked with the group for an hour to teach the
basic biomechanics behind sprinting more
effectively and running more efficiently.
YOUNG PLAYER AWARD | Our Rising Stars
This week’s Corporate Express Rising
Star Nomination has been awarded to
Joe Groenewegen
Joe played a strong part in Launceston’s win
against the Northern Bombers at Windsor
Park last week, taking 7 marks amongst 15
possessions mainly at Centre Half Forward.
Joe was particularly good early when the
pressure was on in the game. Also pleasing
was Joe’s ability to run and compete, showing
the benefit of working hard over summer to
recover from a series of injuries in 2009.
T H E W H I S T L E B LOW E R | Top 10 field umpires
One of the new initiatives taken in umpiring
this season is to appoint and recognize the
‘Top 10’ Field Umpires on the Tasmanian State
League (TSL) Panel.
The TSL Umpires Appointment Board have
selected and announced who these umpires are.
The ‘Top 10’ appointed in 2010 are:
- Raymond Mee (30 from Ulverstone)
- Matt Clarke (19 from Moriarty which is near
Devonport)
- Nick Saltmarsh (19 from Ulverstone)
- Shaun Gleeson (24 from Launceston)
- Michael Hay (24 from Launceston)
- Nick Kaine (20 from Launceston)
- Nick Foot (22 from Hobart)
- Mark Tuckett (21 from Hobart)
- Ben Lehner (22 from Hobart)
- Sam Cure (23 from Hobart)
Although the average age of the group is only
22, all group members have had extensive
experience:
- Raymond Mee, Matt Clarke and Nick Foot
officiated in the 2009 TSL Senior Grand Final
- Shaun Gleeson, Mark Tuckett, Ben Lehner
and Sam Cure have all officiated at VFL Level
which has been excellent for them from both an
experience and development point of view.
Last year, Shaun Gleeson was appointed to 3
VFL Senior Finals and was the Emergency Field
Umpire for the VFL Senior Grand Final which
means he was the 4th ranked umpire in the VFL.
- Michael Hay umpired 19 TSL Senior matches
last year including a final a Final at Bellerive.
- Nick Saltmarsh umpired 16 TSL Senior
matches in 2009 and officiated in the TSL Colts
Grand Final.
- Nick Kaine was appointed to 14 TSL Senior
matches last year and his season culminated
when he umpired the NTFA Senior Division 1
Grand Final.
To enable a pathway through to the AFL and
because of the pace of the Tasmanian State
League, we have a ‘3 Field Umpire System’ in all
matches. Whenever possible, the Appointment
Board will have two of the ‘Top 10’ in a senior
match with the third field umpire being an ‘up
and comer’.
The ‘Top 10’ will be recognized by a continuity
of matches as well as receiving higher match
payments. This will also give incentive for other
TSL to strive to reach this level, particularly as
the ‘Top 10’ will be reviewed at both mid season
and at the end of the year.
Next year, it is planned to extend this initiative
and have a ‘Top 10’ in the other two umpiring
disciplines (Boundary and Goals).
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Football’s high profile attracts support
You might have noticed the new look of TSL
umpires in Round One? If you haven’t, take a
closer look this week.
Over the past 6 months AFL Tasmania has
working hard to source and secure a major
sponsor for the new Wrest Point State League
umpires. Two weeks ago we were delighted to
announce The TOTE and BETASPORT as the
naming rights sponsor of the Wrest Point State
League umpires for the next four years.
The TOTE and BETASPORT are the fourth Major
Sponsor to have signed with AFL Tasmania and
more importantly the new Wrest Point State
League joining RACT Insurance, Cadbury and the
Hobart Media Centre.
The four year sponsorship agreement with the
TOTE and BETASPORT is seen an integral element
to the Wrest Point State League.
You may not be aware that umpires and
the umpiring fraternity are a critical part of
Australian Rules Football and without the
ongoing support, education and training of our
umpires our great game would be the worse for
wear. The TOTE and BETASPORT sponsorship
support allows this ongoing education and
training of our umpires.
As you would have noticed in Round One (or will
notice this week) the Wrest Point State League
umpires have been branded in a new and very
distinctive uniform.
All field, boundary and goal umpires officiating in
the Wrest Point State League Senior and U18s
matches will wear the TOTE logo on the front and
the BETASPORT logo on the back of an all yellow
polo shirt for the next four years (with a few modest
changes as we move through the coming seasons.
The Tote’s Director of Operations, Brett Harris,
said his company was particularly delighted to be
backing the umpires.
“In Tasmania our focus continues to be on getting
our name out into the broader community,
particularly the sporting community. AFL
Tasmania and the Wrest Point State League
umpires provide a good vehicle to promote our
business in the state. It’s a high profile-sport
and an obvious next step for us in terms of
sponsorship partners.”
State Umpiring Manager/Coach, Mike Brown,
said his colleagues were delighted to receive the
backing of The TOTE.
“Umpires are a pivotal part of the sport, so it is nice
that a company like The TOTE want to be associated
with us in this way, recognise our contribution and
put their name and logos on our uniforms. We
always receive plenty of attention out there, so I
reckon it might be a great deal for all concerned”.
The involvement of The TOTE and BETASPORT is
another endorsement of the Wrest Point State
League competition and shows that there is
genuine community and corporate support for
Tasmania’s premier competition.
