THIS WEEK’S COVER

The Gospel according to Tasmanian

coach Matthew Armstrong

Picture: Steve Youd

from the editor

This week’s 2010 Wrest Point State

League features a double header at

North Hobart Oval. Hobart is capable

of an upset against Clarence, but South

will need to bring their best game to

down the Demons. There are also

some classic regional rival clashes at

Windsor and West Park with any of the

contestants capable of a win.

The RECORD itself has some great

highlights. See ‘View from Here’ for

an insight into the preferred strategic

direction of Tasmanian football. The

challenge remains to have an AFL team

in Tasmania and to ensure that football

at all levels benefits from this.

The great work of amateur

photographer, Steve Youd, has provided

a timeless footy image for our cover.

Tasmanian coach Matthew Armstrong

has endured some significant losses

for our senior and U18 teams in 2010,

but still the U18s are a chance to take

out the National Championships. This

picture captures perfectly some of the

attributes required of player and coach

at the elite level and this week’s ‘Young

Guns’ article details the game.

Have a great Saturday at the footy.

VIEW FROM HERE | AFL must benefit Tasmanian football

Continued exclusive use of Aurora Stadium

as Tasmania’s only venue where AFL games

of football should be played is a topic of

conversation across the island at the moment.

AFL Tasmania is particularly interested in

the broader issues; however, it would be

disappointing if the media and our community

leaders were to turn this debate into a simple

matter of parochialism.

Parochialism should have nothing to do with this

topic, nor should AFL football ever be linked to

where Cricket determines to play their games at

the highest level.

In my opinion running an argument based on

Cricket at Bellerive Oval and AFL football at Aurora

Stadium is nothing better than a parochial or

political argument (or both). What has Cricket got

to do with what is best for Australian Football?

AFL Tasmania wants to see Aurora Stadium

genuinely developed into the home of Australian

Football in Tasmania, not just remain the home of

AFL football in Tasmania. I believe the Tasmanian

Government and the AFL share this view. Reality

is Bellerive Oval is the home of Tasmanian Cricket,

however, Aurora Stadium is most definitely not yet

the home of Tasmanian Football.

I believe our state and our sport has an

opportunity to use the AFL product and venues

such as Aurora Stadium and Bellerive Oval to

support the growth of our sport at community

level and to provide economic development,

tourism and social capital returns to the state.

The AFL national competition is the revenue

generating engine room for our sport and the AFL

product and the 18 club brands are significant

contributors to the broader national community,

particularly in the traditional football states.

Tasmanian football fans and all our community

leaders should look beyond just four AFL games

and just one Melbourne AFL club. Tasmanian footy

fans should think more strategically, we should be

bolder and more innovative when considering what

benefits the AFL product can provide to our sport in

Tasmania and to our local community.

For a state like Tasmania would there be a better

winter tourism strategy than AFL football?

For a decade now the Tasmanian Government

has rightly promoted the positive benefits that AFL

football has brought to Tasmania through tourism.

We started in 2001 with one game, then went to

two, then to four – why wouldn’t we want to go to

eight, ten, then our own team?

In South Australia the AFL product provides

the SANFL with approximately $8m annually to

reinvest back into the development of SA Football

and in Western Australia in 2009 the WAFC

provided their nine state league clubs with $368k

each in direct funding grants.

Tassie footy fans – it is time to ensure the AFL

product benefits Tassie football, at all levels and

in all regions.

Two good wins last week have kept our finals

aspirations alive. Please get behind both

teams today against coastal rivals Devonport.

Essendon’s Dustin Fletcher, dual premiership

player, All Australian and 300 game veteran

is our guest at West Park today. The sports

facility will be closed until 2pm for lunch with

Dustin. Please join us there after 2pm for the

senior game or after the football to mix with

fellow supporters and the players.

Other dates for your calendar:

• Sunday July 25 - Family day spit roast.

• Saturday July 31 - Past players and

supporters lunch honouring 1960

premiership team.

• Saturday July 31 - Purple haze ball.

A reminder that the new bar is open on

Thursday nights after training with meals and

drinks available. Also, Friday nights and on

Sundays when junior footy is played at the

park. See you there.

CFC NOTES BROUGHT TO YOU BY ASSET TRAINING

– REGISTERED TRAINING ORGANISATION

The senior game was a hard fought affair with

Lauderdale taking the game right up to us.

The backline was again well led by Cameron

Blight and Greg Sharman and the work of the

back six enabled us to remain in the game and

maintain our run of success.

Finally speculation regarding the reserves is

over. From 2011 there will be no reserves

competition for TSL clubs. The decision is

extremely disappointing but unavoidable

due to insufficient support to retain the

competition.

Reserves will be replaced by Colts made up of

a minimum of fourteen under eighteen players

with allowance for ten over age players but

with limits on age to apply.

If you are interested in obtaining further

information on this issue please contact the club.

Don’t forget 3 July v Glenorchy at home we

celebrate the 40th anniversary of our first

premiership in 1970.

The following day a “Sunday School” at the

changerooms commencing at 10am – all welcome.

DEVONPORT

Last week we had a mixed result for the day

with our U18’s pulling out a win after a bit of

rally from Launceston in the last quarter. Our

Reserves put in a hard fought game to take

the four points.

Our Seniors allowed the opposition to take

the lead and run with the ball and we had to

play catch up football all day. To Launceston’s

credit they played a good brand of football and

delivered a wakeup call for our boys.

Congratulations goes to a couple of our

talented youngsters in Clay Hardy and Brennon

Kendell, they both put in commendable

games. Clay was nominated as best player for

Devonport and Brennon played his first senior

game and displayed talent and maturity with

football smarts.

The Annual Black and White Ball held last

Saturday after the game was a fantastic

night. With a packed room, great atmosphere

and the music of Gypsy Rose all those that

attended had a great night. Congratulations

goes to the Ball Committee, once again they

produced a great night.

GLENORCHY

Well done to all involved last weekend against

North Hobart it was an important game for the

club and our season and the Seniors responded

brilliantly. Also a great win by our U18’s who

have had a tough season. More efforts like last

Saturday will see you win more than you will lose

for the remainder of the season. Best wishes to

all Glenorchy teams today.

Congratulations to MICHAEL STYLES who last

week was inducted into the Tasmanian Football

Hall of Fame. This is a great honour after a

wonderful career with Glenorchy – over 200+

Senior games, Premiership player in 1999,

Captained the Senior team for 7 seasons,

Captained/Represented Tasmania and was

drafted to Collingwood in the 1989 Draft. One of

Michael’s biggest honours would have been when

he was announced Captain of Glenorchy’s Team of

the Century. Well done ‘Patch’ you deserve this.

LAUDERDALE

This week the Lauderdale Football Club would

like to acknowledge and congratulate Paul

Hudson for his 100th game. Paul played

junior footy at Lauderdale and has developed

into a very skilful player who likes to kick a

goal. We hope you have a great day and wish

Unfortunately we were unable to get over the

Northern Bombers - 03 6334 2359

President: Thane Brady

Senior Coach: Paul Atkins

NORTH L’TON

A fantastic effort last week from the boys

in a very close and hard fought win against

Hobart. Our more experienced players were

fantastic in the last quarter, refusing to give

in and showing the younger guys what hard

work and team effort can achieve. Let’s put

those same efforts into today’s game against

Launceston and put another win on the

board for the Club.

North Launceston Ball

This year’s Gala Ball will be held on the

31st July, with further details to be provided

shortly. This is always a great night so be

sure to put the date in your diary. Enquiries

are to be made to Rob Donnelly at the Club.

The Northonians will again be holding a

reunion “Back to North Day” of past players,

officials and volunteers continuing on

from the very successful reunion held in

season 2009 when 160 people attended.

The reunion will be held on Saturday 24th

July in the Gunns Room at Aurora Stadium

commencing at 12 noon.

South Launceston Bulldogs - 03 6344 5759

President: Ian Goninon

Senior Coach: Dale Chugg

SOUTH L’TON

Last week was another case of our senior

guys trying hard and being in a position to

win the game but unfortunately couldn’t

finish with the result they wanted.

Also last week was disappointing for our

reserves and U18s as they both had losses.

This week we are back on the road to North

Hobart. This will be a great test for our

senior boys and a great opportunity for

the other boys to try and consolidate their

position in the finals.

A reminder about cheap $7 player’s teas

Thursday night and great counter meals at a

good rate Friday night at Youngtown Oval.

Please mark in your diary July 10th. This

evening will be our “SLFC Club Ball” the night

is $70 per head, U18s $50, being held at

the Tram Sheds 7:30pm for 8pm start. This

includes beer, wine and finger food.

O U R G R E AT G A M E | Beachside Bombers aiming high

The Lauderdale Football Club was formed in

1948 and were known as the Lauderdale Cats

until 2004 when the Club aligned with the AFL’s

Essendon Bombers. Subsequently, Lauderdale

changed their nickname and colours to become

the Lauderdale Bombers.

Lauderdale is a beachside commuter town

around 30km from the heart of Hobart and

neighboring Clarence on the eastern shore of the

Tasmanian capital.

The club was a member of the Southern Football

League from 1996 after being a member of other

various leagues, such as the Tasman Football

Association (1979–80) and was a member of the

Tasmanian Amateur Football League (Southern

Division) prior to 1996. The club won the 1991

Southern Amateur premiership and was runner-up

in 1993.

A founding club of the Southern Tasmania

Football League in 1996, the league changed its

name in 1998 to the Southern Football League.

In the years between 1996 and 2001, Lauderdale

had little success and struggled with a success

rate of just 30.2%. But in 2002 the league was

split into two divisions and Lauderdale was placed

into the Regional League.

The club finally had some success, making the

Grand Final in both 2002 and 2003. Although

beaten by Cygnet in both of the club’s finals

campaigns, it was successful in its application to

join the SFL Premier League after Sorell Football

Club was forced into recess for a season and

later rejoined the competition, this time in the

Regional League.

The Essendon alignment coincided with the clubs

entry into the Southern Football League’s Premier

League and the club started the 2004 season as

the Lauderdale Bombers.

After disappointing campaigns in 2004, 2005 and

2006 the Bombers finally started to make inroads

into the competition in 2007, missing the final five

by only 12% from the Hobart Lions and collected

some impressive scalps along the way, beating

both Clarence and North Hobart during the roster

season and finished fourth in 2008 finals series.

As well, the Club’s U17 team achieved a maiden

premiership victory in the SFL Premier League

against North Hobart.

Lauderdale was included as a member of the

Tasmanian State League competition in 2009,

despite being competitive the senior team eventually

finished 9th and Under-19’s went on to win the

premiership beating Clarence in the grand final.

The Club has been accepted into the Tasmanian

State League in an attempt to balance the

available talent on the Eastern Shore of Hobart

away from the dominant Clarence who have

enjoyed 2 decades of success at the highest level

in Tasmania. It is a massive challenge and a

long-term view is required, but the Club is steadily

building its inventory of facilities, playing and

coaching resources and support in the business,

political and broader community.

G R A S S R O O T S | TASSAL Challenge Cup

In a joint initiative, AFL Tasmania and Tassal

combine to provide an opportunity for young

footballers from isolated regions of Tasmania

to represent their community and show off their

talent in a regional football gala day that is

known as the Tassal Challenge Cup.

The Cup was launched in 2009, with East Coast,

West Coast, Huon and Tasman/Channel playing

off against each other, with each team made up

of players from the surrounding communities.

The inaugural competition was a great success,

with Tasman/Channel taking out the title at North

Hobart Oval.

The key objective of this unique competition

is to further promote community and regional

football, but more importantly to ensure all young

footballers have the opportunity to be involved in

the AFL Tasmania talent identification pathway.

Tassal’s General Manager Mark Ryan said,

“Tassal is delighted to partner with AFL Tasmania

on this great initiative. Tassal has a proud history

of supporting football in Tasmania from grass

roots through to Statewide League. As a proud

Tasmanian company that employs over 450

people, many from regional Tasmania, we see

enormous benefits for our youth in streamlining

this process. We look forward to growing the

Tassal Challenge Cup and nurturing talented

footballers in Tasmania.”

Athletes selected to represent their region in the

Tassal Challenge Cup will be assessed by AFL

High Performance Manager Nick Probert and

other AFL key personnel during the two stages of

competition. At the conclusion of the event, some

athletes may be considered to pursue the AFL

Tasmania Talent Identification Pathway.

There will be an opportunity provided for some

boys to be selected from these games to be

considered for selection in the Intra state regional

representative North v South U14 and U15 games

that are the culmination of the Tasmanian State

League Development Series.

In 2010, the competition will once again be taking

place in early October, with further details being

released closer to the date.

Players will be selected to represent their region

in the Tassal Challenge Cup by local football

administrators and coaches and will be from the

U14 and U15 age groups. They will be assisted by

AFL Tasmania staff and Development staff from

their relevant State League Club.

The Tassal Challenge Cup is providing a fantastic

opportunity to those talented footballers to

pursue their dream.

TASSIE TIPSTERS | Blue boys on the rise

After a poor 2009 season and a slow start

to 2010 Launceston is starting to become a

powerhouse of the Wrest Point State League as

many football experts (including most of us at

AFL TAS) anticipated at the inception of the new

competition. The Blues showed their strength

with a sublime performance against Devonport

at Devonport Oval.

This week’s winner, Mr Bruce Mansfield of

Ulverstone, tipped 5 out of 5 and has won the

weekly prize of $250 and a TOTE Sport Radio

KB Sherrin.

YOUNG GUNS | Tassie notches up strong win against NT.

The Tasmania U18 team played the Northern

Territory in Round 3 of the NAB National

Championships at Aurora Stadium last Saturday.

Tasmania began the game poorly with a

Northern Territory mark and goal in the first 15

seconds of the game from centre half-forward

Steven May as a result of a Tasmanian centre

square infringement. The Northern Territory

subsequently dominated the next 15 minutes of

play, with four goals scored from multiple inside

50s resulting from NT’s willingness to win the

contested possession.

To Tasmania’s credit the players regrouped well in

the second half of the first quarter. Charlie Riewoldt

marked near the 50m line and converted well from

a set shot. Mathew Dilger marked and goaled

from a similar position soon after and Tasmania

recovered to be a goal down at quarter time.

The second quarter saw Tasmania close down

the Northern Territory around stoppages and

begin to take control of the game. With significant

advantages in height around the ground, taller

players Ben Brown, Joe Groenewegen and Andrew

Phillips were marking well and providing targets

for Tasmania.

Charlie Riewoldt was marking everything and at half

time had 5 contested marks out of 6 and 3 goals to

his name. Tasmania kicked six goals in the second

quarter to lead by 13 points at half time.

Tasmania continued this trend after half time

with a convincing third quarter that saw the

state pile on another six goals to three. Injuries

hit Tasmania in the third quarter with Charlie

Riewoldt and Ben Brown both injuring knees and

Sam Darley being knocked out.

Ben will undergo reconstructive surgery on his

knee this week and will be sorely missed in

the final two games and at his home TSL club

Devonport for the remainder of the season. We

all wish Ben well with his surgery and recovery.

Tasmania won the game by 44 points, 18.9 117

to 11.9 75. Mathew Armstrong was pleased with

the evenness of contribution from players across

the ground. Skipper Josh Green was again

impressive as was Sam Darley through midfield

with 32 possessions apiece.

Ruckman Andrew Phillips was dominant all day

with 24 hitouts and Dylan Riley, Jay Blackberry and

Charlie Riewoldt were better players for Tasmania.

Today Tasmania play Round 4 of the NAB Under

18 National Championships against South

Australia at Visy Park in Melbourne. This will

be followed by the final Under 18 game of the

year on Wednesday against New South Wales at

Etihad Stadium.

This game will be broadcast nationally on Fox

Sports beginning at 11:35am. Tasmania will win

the Division 2 National Championships with a win

against New South Wales. Good luck boys!

T H E W H I S T L E B LOW E R | Youd: Giving back to a lifelong pursuit

This week we feature Wayne Youd who is the

Tasmanian State League North West Coordinator

and Assistant TSL Goal Umpires Coach.

Wayne has been involved in umpiring for

38 years and commenced his career with

the Northern Tasmania Football Umpires

Association (NTFUA) as a Field Umpire in 1973.

‘Youdy’ had 11 years umpiring in Launceston

and was also involved from an administration

perspective being Secretary of the NTFUA for

5 years. He joined the North West Umpires

Association (NWUA) after being transferred

to the coast in his employment with the

smallgoods company Richardson’s Meats.

In total, Wayne officiated in 331 Senior

Matches, 179 as a Field Umpire and 152 as a

Goal Umpire. The biggest influences in Youdy’s

career were Kevin Williams, Keith Dolting and

Danny Horton who were all associated with him

when he was umpiring in Launceston.

Wayne says his 3 best appointments in his Field

Umpiring career were:

1. Tasmania v Richmond at Aurora Stadium in 1980.

2. The 1985 NWFU Senior Grand Final between

Penguin and Smithton.

3. The 1979 Intrastate Match between the NWFU and

the TFL. Wayne fondly recalls this match as the

winning goal was scored by AFL Tasmania Hall of

Fame Icon and Hawthorn Legend, Peter Hudson.

After moving to Goal Umpiring, ‘Youdy’ again

quickly reached the top and he officiated in the

1994 NTFL Senior Grand Final.

After retiring, Wayne took on the coaching role

of NWUA Field Umpires Coach, a position which

he held for 4 years. For the last 10 years, he has

been the NWUA Goal Umpires Coach.

Wayne is 66 and has been married for 46 years.

He has had a Milk Vendor business on the north

west coast for the past 17 years. ‘Youdy’ and his

wife Mary have 3 children, Ricky (45), Debbie (43)

and Susan (41).

Ricky is a Field Umpire with the NWUA and

recently officiated in his first NTFL Senior match.

Wayne also has 2 grandchildren involved in

umpiring, namely Courtney Hardstaff (16) who is

in her third season as a Boundary Umpire and her

brother Lachlan Hardstaff (12) who took up the

boundary this year. Courtney has already moved

quickly through the ranks and last year she was

appointed to the NTFL Reserves Grand Final.

Wayne says his umpiring goal is to give something

back to a sport that he has had so much

enjoyment out of and made so many friends. He

lists his other interests and hobbies as Golf, Cycling

and ‘Bundy and Coke’. Wayne once played off a

golf handicap of 1 and he also was a very proficient

cyclist when a teenager, racing against the likes

of Graeme Gilmore and Frank Atkins at the

Tasmanian Christmas/New Year Carnivals.

STATE OF AFFAIRS | AFL Tasmania supports the Cancer Council of Tasmania

Visit the ManVan

The Cancer Council of Tasmania, in

partnership with the Prostate Cancer

Foundation of Australia, are running a Men’s

Health and Cancers project, which aims to

change the way men approach their health. In

2006, 487 Tasmanian men were diagnosed

with prostate cancer in Tasmania. In that

same year, 73 Tasmanian men died following a

prostate cancer diagnosis. 1 in 2 men will be

diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.

Part of the Men’s Health and Cancers Project is

the ManVan. The ManVan will be at North Hobart

Oval today during the Double Header between

Hobart and Clarence and North Hobart and South

Launceston. Trained staff and volunteers will

provide information on prevention, early detection,

treatment and survival of men’s cancer.

We are asking men to step up and `Be a man.

Ask the van.’

While the ManVan will tour the State regularly as

a matter of course, it is also available on request,

and it’s hoped male-dominated workplaces in

particular will step up and take the initiative to

arrange a visit from the ManVan. (manvan@
