Then there were 6. The 2010 Wrest Point
State League premiership contenders
are all but settled with Lauderdale’s win
over Burnie Dockers last weekend. The
young Dockers push for finals has been
largely extinguished, but well done to the
southern Bombers who have finished
their season well.
All 5 games this weekend should be
worth the entrance fee and a further
donation to the ‘Call to Arms’ fundraising
effort for research into cancer amongst
young men. Like the players now is the
time to dig deep and donate to this very
worthy cause.
The RECORD’s reading highlights are
the View from Here with a snapshot look
at the on-field efforts of the competing
teams. As well, the Our Great Game
article considers the history of North
Launceston. Finally, we are once again
able to feature a classic picture on
the cover. This high marking effort by
Jeremy Howe and photographer, Paul
Hudson, epitomizes one of the greatest
highlights of our game. It is the stuff of
every child’s dreams.

VIEW FROM HERE | Finals beckon to round out TSL 2010
I can’t believe it is just two weeks to the
commencement of the second finals series of
our new TSL competition, and what a finals
series it could be!
This week I’ll provide my personal overview of each
Clubs performance in 2010:
•Burnie: Overall the Burnie Dockers have done
a terrific job this year. Prior to the start of the
2010 the Dockers lost many senior TSL players;
however, for most of the year the young lads from
Burnie have been very competitive.
•Clarence: What a season, full of drama and
expectation – a typical scenario at Roo-land. For
most of the past 20 years Clarence have been the
“gun team” in Tasmania. However, can the Roos
finish the job off in 2010?
•Devonport: Not sure, the North-West Magpies
were expected to do well in 2010 and generally,
in spite of a terrible start to the season, they have
had a pretty good season. Are they good enough
– I believe they are, however, I doubt they are fit
enough to go the distance!
•Glenorchy: The disappointment of the year – for
most of the 2010 the Southern Pies have been
way below par! Glenorchy don’t seem to be a
“happy club” on or off the playing field and my
perception is that they aren’t sure where or what
they want to be as a Club.
•Hobart: The Tigers have been great on occasions
and woeful at other times. Consistency has been
a real problem for Hobart. However, the future
looks bright if they can convert potential into
performance.
•Lauderdale: Coach Darren Winter knows what
he is doing – the Southern Bombers have lost a
couple of close games, had they won them, then
the Bombers would be in the top six. The Club
culture is changing and an enhanced off field
structure can assist them.
•Launceston: Great to see the Blues bounce back
after a really disappointing 2009. Can they go all
the way? They are the only team to beat Clarence
and look like the “real deal”.
•North Hobart: Have the playing group done
enough hard work? It appears the Demons have
enough talent to beat anyone; however, they don’t
seem to have the condition or courage to run
games out.
•North Launceston: Who knows? The Northern
Bombers have had blocks of brilliance this season
and then moments of disaster. They are all
over the shop. No TSL fan really knows what the
Bombers will produce each week.
•South Launceston: The Bulldogs have had great
“patches” this season; a great quarter here and
there, but they can’t seem to string four quarters
together. The Board and coaching staff have
worked really hard and in a season or two the
Bulldogs can be a force in the TSL.
All up, 2010 has been a very competitive season!

from Dodges Ferry in the SFL last year. Howie is a high flying
utility player with a great pair of hands. Jeremy went through the
Mariners program and also played 4 games for the Tassie Devils

Call to Arms will raise valuable funds for the fight
against men’s cancer.
If you are at North Hobart Oval on Saturday
you can find out more by visiting the MANVAN.
Trained staff and volunteers will provide
information on prevention, early detection,
treatment and survival of men’s cancer. We are
asking men to step up and `Be a man. Ask the
van.’ They will also have information on ways to
make smart lifestyle choices.
While the ManVan will tour the state regularly as
a matter of course, it is also available on request,
and it’s hoped male-dominated workplaces in
particular will step up and take the initiative to
arrange a visit from the ManVan. (manvan@

After a very sluggish start the seniors picked
up the tempo and won a hard fought contest
last week. What a great game by Jackson
O’Brien ably supported by Sharmo and after
quarter time another solid team effort
The reserves lost their game in the first
quarter and will need to make better starts in
remaining games.
The under eighteens had a great win following
their lack lustre performance the previous
week and beating North for the first time this
year.
Our women’s team fell just short in their
grand final and unfortunately were off target
with goal kicking having more shots than
Launceston. A very tough pill to swallow
loosing your first game in three years in a
grand final. Nonetheless we are very proud
of their efforts and congratulate Wayne
Walker the coach and all our women on their
performance.

DEVONPORT
Last week we ventured to the Launceston
ground looking forward to a great match for all
three grades. We weren’t disappointed.
The Seniors jumped out from the first bounce
and held the lead most of the day, but couldn’t
withstand the Launceston fight back in the
last quarter. We ended up 4 points down on
the day. A great effort against a well ranked
team. Our U18’s weren’t so lucky and lost to a
much better side on the day. Our seconds had
a great win.
A special thanks to Simons Carpet One our
sponsors for today. The teams will be playing
for the inaugural “Simons Carpet One Cup”
clash against Burnie each time we meet. It
is must win if we really want to be there in
September.
Let’s get behind the boys today and spur them
on to a good win to secure the double chance
and a finals home game.

Johnny Cash tribute show – Thursday 26th
August at 7.00pm for dinner and show $30 per

Last weekend showed what the senior boys are
capable of when they put it altogether. After a
long run of outs what better way to notch a win
then to comprehensively defeat last season’s
runner up in Glenorchy. The boys are keen to
show the whole football community that they are
not ‘one hit wonders’.
Call To Arms
Last weekend’s Call to Arms match raised
$193.25 towards the Cancer Council’s campaign.
Today we again wear the yellow arm bands as this
is AFL Tasmania’s Call to Arms round.
Best & Fairest & Volunteer Recognition Night
The Club Best & Fairest night will be held in
the Clubrooms on the 28th August. This will
be a similar format to last year with the Club
volunteers also being recognized. More details to
follow soon.
A Tribute To A Legend
August 14th at 7pm in the Clubrooms we will

What a great win last Saturday by our senior team
at a windswept Burnie. This win made it four in a
row, let’s hope we can make it 5 against Glenorchy
today.
We recently held our annual Red and Black Ball
which was a great success. We would like to
pay tribute to Tony Beakly who was awarded Life
Membership of the Lauderdale Football Club half
way through the evening. Tony’s involvement began
in 1979 when the then Magpies entered a team in
the Tasman Association. Since then Tony has seen
the club grow and develop and has made many
lifelong friends along the way.
Tony has served the club as Secretary, Treasurer,
committee member, player (99 games) and coach.
Tony is extremely proud to receive such recognition,
and his certificate will sit in pride of place at his
home.
Well done Tony, our club is where it is today

Congratulations to Leigh Harding who played
his 100th game last week. Leigh celebrated
in great style with a win against South
Launceston and was one of the best players in
a hard fought contest. Leigh was playing only
his second game this season, after rupturing
his ankle ligaments in pre-season. Well done
Leigh.
A big game this week against Launceston at
home. Past history has proven we can be very
competitive against the top teams and we
will be going all out to retain 4th spot on the
ladder. We are vying for that spot with several
other teams.
Our Under 18 team are sitting on the top of
the ladder, with Clarence a close second. Both
teams are sitting on 44, with the Bombers
having a slight lead in percentage. This
position augers very well heading into the
finals, and we encourage everyone to get
behind our young and upcoming players.
To our Under 16 Team; good luck on Sunday
when you play South Launceston in the first
week of the finals series. This match is being
played in George Town and we wish them the
very best of luck.

OUR GREAT GAME | From Robins to Bombers – a mighty force of Northern football
North Launceston Football Club was founded
in 1893 and has played at the highest possible
level in Tasmania since 1896 when it became a
member of the senior NTFA competition.
Along the journey North Launceston has become
one of the most successful Tasmanian clubs and
become an institution in the northern suburbs
of Launceston with many great Tasmanian
and Australian footballers have called North
Launceston Football Club home.
In 2006, North Launceston’s immense
contribution to and impact on the game over the
years was recognised with its induction into the
Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame as a ‘great club’,
while in the same ceremony, North Launceston’s,
1998 team was inducted as a ‘legendary team’

GRASS ROOTS | Women’s football kicking goals in Tasmania
TASWAFL Grand Final - Launceston Wins!
Clarence Roos have narrowly missed out on another
finals victory at the hands of the Launceston Blues
in the TASWAFL Grand Final on Sunday, 1st August
at North Hobart Oval. Launceston played an
impressive game to record a 10 point win over the
undefeated Clarence, with the triumph made even
sweeter after losing to the Roos successively in the
2008 and 2009 Grand Finals.
The Blues faced the Roos three times this year
with each game a close encounter, including
their last meeting when the margin was a tight 7
points. Their competitive history only added to
the hype surrounding Sunday’s clash which took
place in almost perfect conditions.
Launceston mounted their Premiership bid in
front of a high-spirited crowd of approximately
500 supporters, keen to see the two teams
battle it out. The lead changed hands a number
of times during the game, with the underdogs
kicking a few crucial goals towards the start of the
fourth quarter. Despite an admirable attempt by
Clarence to retain the advantage, time was not
on their side. The final scores recorded were:
Launceston 11.4 (70) def. Clarence 8.12 (60).

on Ground for her integral role in the side’s win.

league which will not only be experiencing their
highest participation level to date, but players will
also have the chance to make the State team to
represent Tasmania at the National Carnival.
We would like to say a big thank you to all Clubs
for their unwavering support and enthusiasm this
year. It has been fantastic to see the competition
grow and be enjoyed by so many. Also, a huge
thank you goes to Luci-Anne Ottaway for all of her
tremendous work this season and congratulations

What a week of footy! Glenorchy’s push
towards finals action hit a massive and unexpected
road block on Saturday at the hands of
Hobart – the Magpies going down by 93 points.
The other turn-up was Lauderdale’s continued
good form to extinguish Burnie Dockers push
for the finals with a win at the away team’s
graveyard - West Park.

YOUNG GUNS | The Importance of strength development
Just recently the AFL conducted a sports science
workshop at AFL House Docklands to discuss
the increasingly important issue of physical
preparation of the elite talent pathway player.
Present at this meeting was a representative
from each AFL club’s fitness and medical teams
and all State Academy Strength and Conditioning
Coaches. Interestingly AFL Tasmania is the only
State Academy organisation to employ a Strength
and Conditioning Coach full time with the other
states at best employing a part time position for
the strength and conditioning or fitness coach role.
One of the general conclusions to come out this
meeting was the need to focus on the physical
preparation (specifically strength development)
of the Under 16 State Academy squad member
or the 15-16 year old athlete. This serves as a
preventative measure to the increasing injury
rate that appears to be occurring in the State
18s Academy Squads throughout the nation.
This is particularly evident with the elite AFL/
AIS Academy Squad, which represents the most
talented players selected from across the country,
where the majority number of its squad members
entering the program with significant injury issues.
The optimal form of strength development for this
age group involves the utilisation or resistance
training or weight training. It is needed due to
the fact that the youth of today are simply not as
strong as the generations before them. This type
of training has formed a significant part of the 16s
Academy program in the lead up to the National
Carnival and has been credited with vastly
reducing injury concerns throughout the squad
during the National Carnival.
Once the final squad of 40 players was selected
for the 16s Academy a ten week program was
devised that saw each player perform a Monday
physical preparation and skill development
session within their region. Additional weekly
development sessions were performed as
required based on the individual needs of the
athlete. Great improvements were seen in the
strength levels and physique of the players.
The resistance training focus to improve strength
and power shall continue throughout the season
and into the off-season training period to ensure
benefits gained throughout the program are
not lost. This can obviously not occur unless
qualified supervision is provided for each of the
scheduled strength sessions. AFL Tasmania is
extremely fortunate to have a great volunteer staff
throughout the state and is extremely appreciative
of the time provided by these staff. If coaches
and players throughout the state wish to receive
further information on strength training programs
for the talented developing player then please feel

THE WHISTLE BLOWER | Umpires achieving in Tasmania
This week we feature Paul ‘Biddy’ Bidgood
who is a member of the TSL Boundary Umpire
Appointment Board.
Paul is 37, lives in Kingston and recently accepted
the position of Regulatory Services Group Leader
with the Central Coast Council. He has been
married for 12 years and he and his wife Rachel
have one child, Alex who is 9 years old.
Paul started umpiring due to his school not
having a footy team in Year 11 and also as a
way to earn some pocket money. It also assisted
him to get fitter for Athletics which he has always
been very keen on.
‘Biddy’ says the two biggest influences on his
career were Nigel Hyland (his first Boundary
Umpires Coach) and the late Max Cherry (Athletics
Fitness Coach). Paul says both these gentlemen
were great mentors in sport and life generally
which enabled him to get the best out of himself
in umpiring.
Paul has now been involved for 20 years as a
Boundary Umpire. In the last 2 seasons he also
helped out Field Umpiring on Sundays in the
Southern Tasmania Junior Football League (STJFL)
and sometimes even field umpired a Colts match
in the morning before boundary umpiring a Senior
match in the afternoon.
The 3 best appointments in Paul’s umpiring
career were:
•State League Grand Final in 1994 (his first Grand Final).
•Tasmania v Richmond in 1993.
•AFL Reserves match between Essendon and
St.Kilda at the MCG in 1994.
Overall, Paul had an outstanding career and
officiated in almost 300 Senior matches including
160 TSL Senior matches as well VFL matches
and over a 100 Southern Football League (SFL)
games. He officiated in 11 Senior Grand Finals (5
State League and 6 SFL).
‘Biddy’ has also been a very active member off the
Field and he has been on the Executive Committee
of the Tasmanian Football Umpires Association
(TFUA) for the past 6 years. During this period he
served as Vice President for 4 years and has held
the President’s role for the last 2 years.
Paul has won the following Awards with the TFUA:
•J.R.McMurray Award in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
This is the most prestigious trophy given by the
TFUA and is for involvement in Association affairs
and achievement in umpiring.
•2009 Coach’s Merit Award.
In relation to coaching, Paul has had considerable
experience as both the TFUA Head and Assistant
Boundary Umpires Coach. ‘Biddy’ says his goal
is to assist Boundary Umpires get the best out
of themselves and realize their potential and the
opportunities that umpiring presents them.
In relation to his President’s role, Paul wants to
ensure that umpire numbers are sufficient to
supply umpires to all major football leagues in
Southern Tasmania.

STATE OF AFFAIRS | Play by the Rules is for all of us
Part of the funding agreement between the
State Government and AFL Tasmania includes
key performance indicators related to clubs
and associations promoting a safe sporting
environment for members and spectators. This
includes increasing awareness among the
football community of the Play by the Rules
resource and incorporating Play by the Rules
education into coaching courses.
Play by the Rules has been integrated into AFL
Tasmania coach education courses throughout the
state for a number of years now and in conjunction
with Sport and Recreation Tasmania the roll out of
Play by the Rules to our TSL clubs and affiliates will
begin in the coming months.
Play by the Rules is an interactive online resource
that provides information and tools for community
sport and recreation on how to prevent and deal
with discrimination, harassment and child abuse
and how to develop inclusive and welcoming
environments for participation.
Sport and recreation clubs and associations can
use Play by the Rules to:
• Ensure coaches, administrators, officials
and umpires understand their roles and
responsibilities.
• Better understand sport and the law.
• Develop and review policies.
• Access brochures to be used as a way of
communicating messages about sport being
fun, fair and safe.
