Welcome to the all new Wrest Point
State League RECORD for 2010.
We are very excited about the
significant changes that we will
deliver for footy fans during our
18 round fixture. In this regard we
welcome Flying Colours to our team
for design and print.
Together we have undertaken a 6
month journey to this point involving
countless meetings, emails and other
consultation and a massive print run
of more than 90,000 ‘shells’.
We have been kicking some goals with
the design approved and the addition
of colour throughout. I am sure you
will agree it is not a new idea but what
a lift colour gives the RECORD.
As you read on you will find: 6 pages
of Feature Articles, 5 pages of
Updates, Club Notes and Team Lists.
The goal for the RECORD in 2010 is
to consistently provide the highest
quality, timely and cost effective
production and which will be the
most admired sporting periodical
produced in Tasmania.

V I E W F R O M H E R E | It’s game on 2010
The inaugural year (2009) of the Wrest Point
State League was an overwhelming success.
The on field competition and the off field
collaboration between all ten (10) member clubs
exceeded the expectation of most people directly
involved in the establishment of the competition.
The premiers, Clarence, played their best football
for the season at the right time of the year. The
2009 grand final clash was a classic encounter
against traditional rival Glenorchy, with the ‘Roos’
hanging on to win by just 6 points in front of
7,500 fans at Bellerive Oval.
Clarence playing coach and former Tasmanian
Devils captain, Brett Geappen, did a terrific
job in his first season as coach. Brett is a high
quality player, a player who continues to serve
Tasmanian football very well and we look forward
to him continuing to contribute to Tasmanian
football in the years to come through the
Clarence Football Club.
Congratulations must go to outgoing Clarence
President Richard Mulligan. Richard was in his
early years as President of the Clarence Football
Club when the Roos won the last SWL grand final
against North Launceston at York Park in 2000.
His last year as President of Clarence saw his
club collect the first Wrest Point State League
premiership cup. In between time the Roos also
won multiple SFL flags and in Richard’s time as
President the Clarence Football Club has enjoyed
a run of success that few clubs in the history of
Tasmanian football could match. Well done on a
great job Richard!
In 2009 our new Wrest Point State League
received wonderful support from all forms of
Tasmania’s sporting and news media and from
the ‘football loving’ public of Tasmania and we
look forward to continued support again in 2010.
AFL Tasmania appreciates such support and we
will do whatever we can to build further interest in
our unique ‘whole of state’ football competition.
We aim to take small steps forward each and
every year; we aim to build a quality competition
on the field and importantly develop high quality
on and off field community club environments for
all 10 Wrest Point State League clubs.
During 2010 AFL Tasmania will also be engaging
with all members of our ‘football family’ to
develop a PLAN for Tasmanian football below the
Wrest Point State League. It is vital that all levels
of our game in all areas of Tasmania also have
the opportunity to grow and prosper.

our first RACT Insurance Player of the Year
The 2009 season of TSL football saw
Clarence’s Jeromey Webberley win the
inaugural RACT Insurance Player of the
Year award by 4 votes ahead of North
Launceston’s Darren Crawford. Jeromey
received a $2,500 holiday and $2,500
cash prize.
Webberley also finished 2nd in the TSL
Tassie Medal and went on to play in the
Roos TSL premiership, win his club Best
and Fairest and is now embarking on
an AFL career after being taken by the
Richmond Football Club at pick 67 in
last year’s AFL National Draft.
Richmond Football Club has described
Jeromey as a “rebounding half-back
with exceptional endurance and a
penetrating kick”.
On winning last year’s award Jeromey
said, “This is a massive award to
win, you only have to look around the
competition and see so many fantastic
players that to be recognised among
them is a great honour, this is an award
I will look back on with great pride.”
We are very pleased to have the on-going
support of RACT Insurance for the 2010
‘Player of the Year Award’ as well as the
expertise of our print media partners, The
Advocate, The Examiner and The Mercury, in
determining votes for games played in each
region. We wish every player well in 2010
as they strive strive to emulate Jeromey
Webberley and become the RACT Insurance
Player of the Year.

The 2010 season was officially launched last
Thursday, 1st April at the Country Club Casino.
Club Presidents, Coaches, Captains along
with AFL Tasmania Premier Partners, and AFL
Tasmania board members and staff kicked off
the 2nd Wrest Point State League Season with
an official launch, which included a round of
interviews with Team Coaches by Alex Johnson
from Southern Cross Television and Brent Costello
from WIN Television.

That alone should mean a bumper crowd
at the opening game but when we throw in
a grand final re-match then it is even more

Welcome back to the footy, it has been a very
positive pre-season and the Club is ready to roll
in 2010.
The Club has recruited well in the off season both
with Coaches and players. The Club has been
able to secure the services of ex Lindisfarne
coach Daniel Willing. Daniel has come across the
river to join the Club in a role as offensive coach.
Graeme Bennetts has also joined the coaching
department and is in charge of the Under 18
team. The Club wishes both Daniel and Graeme
a rewarding time at the Club as the young cubs
continue to turn into fierce Tigers.
On the playing side of it the HFC welcomes all of
there off field recruits to the Club and wish them
an injury free season and may they contribute
positively towards many Hobart wins this season.
Hobart v North Hobart games are always close
and hard fought games and this will be no
different as both Clubs look to kick off season
2010 with three wins.

Lauderdale FC has been in constant
‘makeover’ mode over the off season. We

LAUNCESTON
The second year of TSL is already upon us!
We have seen change for 2010 with the Under
18’s now becoming the second tier team
and playing curtain raisers to the seniors.
This extends the pathway for our players
and provides the best opportunity for young
talented players to play on and develop into
future senior footballers.
After 35 years since the foundation of the
LJFC, 2010 see’s the LFC become “ONE
CLUB” with all grades under the one banner.
A board has been appointed to oversee
the two committees, finances, policies and
procedures. Ensuring the well being of all
players from U9’s through to Seniors, and
also our Ladies Team and the recently formed
Super Team for 35 years and over.
Thank you to all our volunteers, staff and
coaches, we would not survive without
you. Finally the club is always seeking the
“valuable” input and support of additional
volunteers. Please do not hesitate to contact
me if you can help.
Good Luck to all involved at the LFC in 2010. I
ask you all at any level of the club to perform
your tasks in a way that inspires us all to be

The Club has worked hard pre-season to
recruit the best possible players, coaches and
support staff to guarantee a strong foundation
is laid for our future success.
Clinton Brown, our Senior Coach, is doing a
wonderful job and it is important the Board of
Management support and develop all areas
off the field towards assistance, growth and
financial viability.
The current operations of the Club from
the Football Department to the Fundraising
area are all tirelessly working together and
achieving excellent results. The success of
our recent Guernsey Presentation where 150
people attended was a glowing endorsement
of the healthy vibe at the Club. The majority of
Club functions will be held at our home “The
Demons Den”.
Personally I would like to thank our wonderful
volunteers who provided amazing support in
all areas of Club activities. We have much
more work ahead as our journey for success
has merely begun.
Look forward to seeing a mass of Demon
supporters at The TCA on Good Friday for our

The Committee of Management of the
North Launceston Football Club take this
opportunity to welcome all members, players
and spectators to the 2010 Season. Today we
will be testing our skills against Launceston,
and we are confident that our mix of our
experienced players, along with the new
recruits who have joined us this year will
ensure a very competitive game of football.
This year we welcome new President Thane
Brady. Thane brings to the Club new
initiatives, a broad knowledge of governance,
and importantly the desire to progress the
Club into the future.
In addition to a new President, the Club also
appointed a new senior coach, Phil Atkins.
Phil has worked tirelessly with the team and
the progression to date is very encouraging
with all players totally committed to putting in
100%.
The Club has a new social committee, and we
look forward to some great evenings. Notice

SOUTH L’TON
The South Launceston Football Club
(SLFC) is one of 10 clubs that are now
part of the first tier Tasmanian state-wide
Football League formed in 2009. In recent
years “South” has played in the Northern
Tasmanian Football League.
Some of the greatest strengths of the club are
the youth development programs such as our
Junior Football Program, considered to be a
benchmark in Tasmania with some 250 young
players involved. SLFC has a long history of
youth development with many of the current
senior players and committee members
commencing as juniors, and some going on to
play at the highest level in the AFL.
Over the past few months the club has
had some changes in leadership and
management. This, along with the many
young players that make up the club and a
wide sponsor network, give the SLFC a very
bright future.
The Bulldogs are eager to be unleashed in
2010 with their first game against Lauderdale.

O U R G R E AT G A M E | History comes alive
Welcome to Our Great Game where we will
explore the tapestry of Tasmanian football
history and also embark on some analysis of
topical issues in Tasmanian football.
Starting next week and then approximately every
fortnight we will present the rich and varied
history of the 10 Tasmanian State League Clubs.
And what a history we have! Not only do we
have the recognized oldest club in Tasmania
in Launceston, but also arguably the most
successful in North Hobart. We also have the
fascinating merged history of Clubs such as
Glenorchy, Burnie and South Launceston.
Can you remember Cananore? The Hobart
based club were a dominant force in Tasmanian
football in the first half of last century. The
Canaries wore black and gold and played out
of the TCA Ground. After World War Two the
club was disbanded and then effectively reestablished
under the new district format in
Tasmanian football as the Hobart Football Club.
The fascinating history of these Clubs will be the
subject of a special feature mid-year.
We will also consider the relatively new clubs
such as Clarence and Lauderdale which have
emerged as the eastern suburbs of Hobart have
grown outwards and the much older working
class bastion of North Launceston and the home
of middle class Devonport.
Our Great Game is much more than the 10 TSL
Clubs and some of the topical issues we will
consider include:
• The Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame which
will for the 6th time celebrate the contribution
of numerous individuals and recognize
another great club, legendary team and
memorable game of Tasmanian football.
• Also, Tasmania will once again take on
Queensland in a senior interstate clash in June.
We will consider the role and achievements of
Tasmania in interstate football.
• The Tasmanian Devils. Were they ill
conceived and doomed from the start or
was it the boldest and longest experiment in
Tasmanian football being a serious contender
in the national football club spotlight?
Finally, we will ask you to join the debate about
when we should celebrate Tasmanian footballs
sesquicentenary (150th anniversary). The AFL
celebrated the anniversary of Australian Football
in 2008 on the basis that the formulation of the
so called ‘Melbourne Rules’ of 1858 was a start
point for football history.
Of course different forms of Australian football
were being played in Tasmania, as well as
Victoria, nearly two decades before 1858. In
Tasmania we will consider key milestones
between 1858 and 1875, which is recognized
as the year that the Launceston Football Club
officially came into being, and promote one as
the start point of Our Great Game.

G R A S S R O O T S | NAB AFL Auskick
The Grassroots will look each week at the
various football programs, competitions and
services which ensure the foundation of our
great game of Australian Football is flourishing
in Tasmania. This week we begin with the
highly regarded national program for primary
aged children – NAB AFL Auskick.
With the 2010 NAB AFL Auskick program about to
kick start around Tasmania it’s time for all footy
loving children to start dragging mum or dad out of
bed and along to your local NAB AFL Auskick centre
to register. Last year there was 9515 registered
Auskickers around the state and 168,859
registered from all over Australia to take part in this
fantastic program.
NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football
League’s key introductory program for primary
school-aged boys and girls and their families.
Through our Weekly Coaching Program you’ll
learn the skills of the game through appropriately
modified activities and rules, play football in a fun
and safe environment and make plenty of new
friends too!
The program is also designed for parents to get
out of the car and get involved with coaching,
coordinating or just helping to set up each week.
Last year over 20,000 volunteers supported the
program around the country.

YOUNG GUNS | New state academy underway
Welcome to the first edition of Young Guns.
Throughout the 2010 season we will follow
talented young players around the state and
provide insights into the progress of these players
through both the Tasmanian State League and
the Tasmanian State Under 16 and Under 18
Academy programs.
This year Tasmania has adopted a new National
Talent Development program known as the State
Academy Program. The State Academies exist
at Under 16 and Under 18 level and replace
the previous Under 16 and Under 18, or Tassie
Mariners programs.
This is a new approach to Talent Development
led by the AFL that will see 40 players in both the
Under 18 and Under 16 age groups selected to
form two State Academy squads that will train and
be developed collectively and individually over the
2010 season. It focuses more on the season long
development of individual players, rather than just
the preparation of a State team to travel to the
National Championships.

David Kinsella is the Strength Conditioning &
Rehabilitation Manager. Dave relocated from WA
to begin this role in 2009 and has an enormous
impact on the preparation and management of
the players in the Academy programs as they build
and manage their bodies for the rigours of many
seasons of football ahead.
Players in the Under 18 age group trained
regionally around the state in a 6 week selection
period prior to Christmas. They have since been
completing up to 5 group and individual sessions
a week based on their individual development
programs and have attended two camps.
Critical to the development of players in the
program will be the opportunity to train and
play with their home TSL clubs. This is a terrific
environment for young talented players to
experience a different type of development and
is one of the advantages that our young players
have over some programs interstate, for example
the TAC Cup.
April sees all State Under 18 Academy
members playing the first four rounds with their
TSL clubs, prior to the beginning of a 7 game
Under 18 campaign.

YOUNG PLAYER AWARD | Our Rising Stars
Corporate Express will again sponsor an award aimed at the
development of talented young players who will play in AFL
Tasmania’s Talent Pathway program games and the Wrest Point
State League. The Corporate Express Young Player of the Year
will involve the nomination of a young player each week. Each
week during the season one young player will be nominated as
the weekly Rising Star nominee for the week. At the end of the
year a judging panel will determine the best individual who will
be named the Corporate Express Young Player who will receive
a computer and software package donated by Corporate
Express. The winner will receive their prize at the Tassie Medal
Award presentation at the conclusion of the season.

AFL Tasmania has this week appointed Mike
Brown to the full time position of Tasmanian
Umpiring Manager/Coach.
Mike started his career as a Field Umpire in 1978
and has now been involved for 32 years. He
umpired over 600 matches including 150 Senior
Matches in the previous Statewide League.
Mike has been involved in coaching since he
retired in 1994. He initially took on the role as a
Development Coach which involved mentoring
first year field umpires. Following on from this,
Mike had 3 years as Southern Regional Umpiring
Coach and since 2001 has worked part time in
the role of State Umpiring Manager.
The position of Tasmanian Umpiring Manager/
Coach is a new role at AFL Tasmania; a role which is
expected to significantly enhance the development
and overall quality of umpiring in Tasmania.
The position priority will be the development and
implementation of quality TSL umpiring programs
in the areas of recruitment, retention, coaching,
education and ongoing development of TSL
umpires (field, boundary and goal).
A strong focus will be on ensuring the governance
and management of umpiring in Tasmania is clear
and effective.
In addition to the above, the Tasmanian
Umpiring Manager/Coach will work with AFL
Tasmania’s management team, the AFL
Umpiring Development Manager and nominated
umpiring industry representatives to establish a
Development Plan for Umpiring in Tasmania.
This Development Plan will cover key areas such as:
1. Umpiring pathways (including talent).
2. Umpire recruitment and retention.
3. Coaching and education of umpires and
umpire coaches.
4. Promotion / marketing of umpiring.
5. Umpiring terms and conditions.
6. Management and administration of umpiring.
The intent (over time) is for AFL Tasmania to
establish and develop a high quality umpiring

Mike says there are presently some excellent
young prospects in all 3 disciplines of Umpiring
(Field, Boundary & Goal) in Tasmania.
With the introduction of the Tasmanian State
League, there is now a direct pathway through to
the AFL. Any of the umpires who officiate in the
TSL Grand Final may be selected to trial for the
AFL Squad.
An umpire selected on the AFL Squad can still reside
in Tasmania. Chris Hay, a boundary umpire from
Launceston is currently on the AFL List and officiates
in AFL matches in both Tasmania and Victoria.

AFL Tasmania, Aurora Energy and Tasmanian
primary schools have shared a very successful
12-year partnership with the Aurora Footy in
Schools program.
With the introduction of the new Tasmania State
League (TSL) in 2009 the 10 inaugural TSL clubs
have continued and grown the success of the
program across the whole of Tasmania which
resulted in our 100,000th participant in the
Aurora Footy in Schools program.
On the 15th and 16th March 2010, Aurora Footy
in Schools conducted its bi-annual King and
Flinders Island trip. The travelling party of 16
was made up of Aurora senior management,
including CEO Peter Davis, Footy in Schools and
Aurora’s basketball equivalent program staff,
North Launceston Football Club player and
part-time Development Officer Zane Littlejohn
accompanied by AFL Tasmania Regional Manger
(North) Shaun Young and Business Development
Manager Trent Bartlett.
We left Hobart early on the morning of the
15th flying directly to King Island and on to
the King Island Primary School where 120
enthusiastic students were divided in 4 groups
and participated in skill development i.e. kicking,
marking and handballing, modified skill games
and the crowd favourite “tackling contest” (using
tackling bags only, not fellow students, although
some where very keen to try out the their newly
developed skills on each other).
The next morning we left King Island bound for
Flinders Island where an equally enthusiastic
group of 70-odd students were awaiting our
arrival. We were slightly delayed due to a wrong
turn on the road to Flinders Island Primary School
(as you can imagine there are not too many roads
on Flinders Island and not too many schools, so
the driver will remain anonymous).
Again the students where divided into groups
and participated in skill development and games.
And for the record the girls unanimously won
the tackling contest on both islands much to the
surprise of the boys!
The trips to King and Flinders Island are only
made possible by the generosity and support of
Aurora Energy who make seats available on their
chartered flight to and from the islands.
I would like to thank the North Launceston
Football Club and in particular Zane Littlejohn for
his time and outstanding efforts with the students
of King and Flinders and to the schools and
students for inviting us to bring the Aurora Footy in
Schools program to them.
