40 Tasmanian State Fixture 2011
From the editor
The Wrest Point State League is dishing
up a feast of football this Easter weekend
with games complemented by the Foxtel
Cup on Saturday night between Clarence
and Claremont.
The weekend kicks off with a ‘local
derby’ game in each region on Good
Friday. The six combatants should draw
big crowds to Burnie, Launceston and
Hobart’s home grounds. On the Saturday
South Launceston and Lauderdale will be
desperate to break their 2011 ‘duck’ at
Youngtown Oval before Clarence take on
one of Western Australia’s strongest clubs
in Claremont Tigers.
The RECORD’s reading highlight is
‘Our Great Game’ which has a special
feature on the last Grand Final of the old
Tasmanian State League in 2000. There
is also an article explaining the Foxtel Cup.
Finally, the footy this Easter weekend
preludes a day of reflection on ANZAC Day.
Australian football has many members
who have given great service in times
of war. Many have paid the ultimate
sacrifice so we can play the game and
enjoy the other freedoms of our great
country Australia. Lest We Forget.
VIEW FROM HERE | Umpiring is everyone’s business
Following the recent public comments on umpiring I deem it appropriate to write the following
article for this week.
The Field Umpires role on match day is a challenging
task. They are ‘supervising’ 36 players during the
game as well as making constant decisions. During
an average match I have been informed that the
Field Umpires make an average of 900 ‘decisions’ in
their head. This includes paying or not paying free
kicks, Marks, Out of Bounds and calling ‘Play On’.
The Field Umpires role is certainly the most difficult
and most scrutinised of any person on the field
of play. Any mistake made by a player is usually
forgotten quickly, however, any error made by an
umpire is remembered and often forms the overall
opinion of players, coaches and spectators in respect
of the umpire’s performance for that game.
The game’s ability to recruit and retain Umpires
is more important than ever before, particularly
considering the game’s expansion strategy.
Umpiring is everyone’s business – whether you are
a coach, player, parent, administrator, supporter, we
all have a role to play in creating positive match day
environments. Your attitude and behaviour has a
direct impact on an umpire’s enjoyment of their role.
There is an annual umpiring turnover at community
level of 20-25%. Recruitment is difficult, but
retention is the more significant challenge. One
of the main reasons for this turnover and the
challenge to recruit is the existence of poor match
day environments that are generated by players,
coaches, administrators and supporters. These
environments consist of abuse and intimidation
towards umpires.
Umpiring can often be a very difficult and challenging
task and umpires do the job because of their
enjoyment and love for the game. When the match
day environment is poor their enjoyment deteriorates
and this leads to eventual drop-out.
In saying this it is every person’s right once they
pay their admittance fee to enjoy the match day
experience and become an active participant of the
game, but I implore all football following public to
assist with the environment and culture in respect to
the umpiring fraternity.
Please ensure the football games you attend have
a positive and inclusive environment for everyone
involved in the game and in particular the umpires.
OUR GREAT GAME | Still yearning to play at the highest level
The original Tasmanian Statewide League was formed
in 1986-87 and various senior, reserve and age based
premierships were decided until the end of 2000.
The league was very successful in attracting high
quality players and coaches to Tasmania and also in
developing talented players who were drafted to the
VFL / AFL. The State League was very popular until
a number of Clubs began to fail financially and were
unable to continue in the competition.
There are still a number of players in the new Wrest
Point State League who began their senior playing
careers in the original Tasmanian Statewide League.
Among them are the following:
• Clarence: Aaron McVilly (31yo), Gregg Sharman (31),
Cameron Blight (30), Cameron Thurley (29).
• Burnie: Scott Matheson (32), Kade Munday (28), Luke
Shackleton (26).
• North Hobart: Paul Allison (31), Ken Hall (30) and
Matthew Muir (29).
• North Launceston: Andrew McLean (37), Michael
Praciak (29), Shane Wager (29).
• Devonport: Allan Clements (32).
• Glenorchy: David Kamaric (31).
Of these the evergreen North Launceston
ruckman, Andrew McLean, is not only the oldest
in the competition, but also a veteran of North
Launceston’s last 2 state premierships in 1995 and
1998. David Kamaric of Glenorchy was a member
of the Magpies 1999 triumph under the coaching
of Paul Hamilton. Also in that year (1999), Luke
Shackleton debuted for the Burnie Dockers as a 15
year old.
Finally, no less than 4 players in the Statewide
League grand final in 2000 are still involved as
senior coaches of the Wrest Point State League
clubs, including: Brett Geappen (Clarence), Darren
Winter (Lauderdale), Anthony Taylor (Launceston)
and Dale Chugg (South Launceston).
PRACIAK STILL FLYING HIGH
Michael Praciak’s return to North Launceston in 2010
was borne of his desire to finish his career at the highest
level within Tasmanian football at his original Club.
Once considered an AFL draft prospect the classy
midfielder was involved in an infamous clash with
his own captain-coach, Gary McIntosh, in the 2000
Statewide League Grand Final. Praciak was a key to
the Bombers capacity to counter a dominant Clarence
mid-field, particularly as they had lost their own star
rover, Brendon Bolton, before the ball was bounced.
Praciak was knocked senseless by McIntosh but
recovered after quarter time to be the Bombers best
player on the day. However, the Clarence Roos had
already gained the ascendency and built a lead which
was never challenged.
As well as building a strong reputation in the last
years of the original Statewide League, Praciak
became a dominant player with Longford in the
regional NTFA. He has won multiple Association and
Club best and fairest awards but the ultimate team
success has eluded him.
For Michael Praciak the desire to play at his original
Club and at the highest level could only be topped
by the possibility of being a member of a State
premiership team with the Bombers.
OUR GREAT GAME | Statewide league Grand Final in Launceston
The history of Tasmanian state grand finals is rich
and varied. Many have been shrouded in controversy
and the infamous 2000 edition could arguably rival
the 1967 Tasmanian State Final, which ended as a
no-game when the goalposts were removed before
the final kick by disgruntled north-west fans.
Some of the highlights and lowlights of the 2000
Statewide League grand final include:
• The game was the first Statewide League grand final
not to be played at North Hobart Oval. The game was
played at the newly refurbished York Park (Aurora
Stadium) and was the subject of furious debate
amongst AFL Tasmania and the Hobart City Council,
including the threat of legal action against the league.
• The last Grand Final of the Statewide League as the
competition fell over less than 3 months later when
Burnie withdrew reducing the competition to 5 clubs
and so it was disbanded.
• Highly credentialed North Launceston captain /
coach, Gary McIntosh, promising plenty of ‘bang
and crash’ and delivering. The Magarey Medalist
and All Australian argued that ‘if they aren’t physical
they aren’t worth turning up for’ and proceeded to
accidently flatten one of his own star midfielders in
Michael Praciak in one of the first acts of play. Further
misguided aggression saw North Launceston full-back,
Anthony Whitehead, reported twice and sent from the
field early in the game.
• A furious daylong downpour saw the smallest crowd
at a grand final in the history of the State league with
only 6124 braving atrocious conditions.
• While Scott Allen deservedly won the Baldock Medal
for best on ground, his Clarence team mates rounded
out a bizarre week of footy theatre by chartering
a helicopter to York Park on the Monday so as to
perform a victory ceremony that involved urinating on
the ground.
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
BLASTED out of its first quarter sleep, Launceston showed it is not only Glenorchy and
Clarence duking it out for the TSL crown.
The Blues arrived at North Hobart Oval to take on the
home side after thrashing Devonport and it appeared
early they were not prepared for a much-sterner test
from the Demons. On the back of three first quarter
goals from Paul Allison, North Hobart opened up a
four-goal lead.
The Blues rallied in the second term and found targets
up forward in Brian Finch and Nathan O’Donoghue,
the latter in his return from a lengthy suspension for
contact with an umpire in 2010. Launceston took
control of the game to lead by two points at half-time
and then by 15 at the last change, a lead they were
able to maintain to the final siren.
Finch was simply breath-taking with a nine-goal haul
while O’Donoghue picked up three. For the Demons
Zeke Gardam and Allison finished with four each, but
overall it was a very disappointing performance by
North Hobart given its start to the match and showed
the Demons are still off the TSL’s very top teams.
Hobart appears as if it is in for a long, cold winter with
an inept 82-point loss to Clarence at Bellerive. The
Tigers were actually level with the reigning premiers
in the second term but then conceded the next eight
goals and 15 of the last 17 for the match.
Hobart coach Graham Fox was filthy post-match,
ordering his side to a 5.30am ocean dip the following
day as punishment for the putrid display. The Roos
had 12 goal kickers, led by Cameron Thurley with
four, but lost Matthew Drury (calf), Taylor Williamson
(hamstring) and best afield Aaron French (ankle), who
will all be in doubt for the Foxtel Cup clash against
Claremont.
North Launceston is also showing it could be a
challenger this year but bigger tests lay ahead for
the Northern Bombers than the 105-point lesson it
handed out to Devonport. The northern Magpies had
just two scoring shots in the first half for 1.1 compared
to 21 (10.11) to the visitors to illustrate the difference
between the two sides.
The Glenorchy machine rumbled on without a splutter,
rolling over Lauderdale at KGV Oval under lights in
front of more than 2500. Former Devonport forward
Ben Reynolds kicked five for the southern Magpies in
the 74-point win, while another Devonport recruit, Rhys
Mott, was best on ground for the second week in a row.
Crowd magnet Jason Akermanis had no impact on the
game, having just 13 touches, kicking no goals and
giving away a 50m penalty.
On Sunday afternoon South Launceston nearly caused
a big upset with a narrow loss to Burnie at Youngtown.
The Bulldogs led by three points at the last change,
before a five-goal last term saw the Dockers home
by 15 points. Rohan Baldock kicked three for the
Dockers while former AFL players Mitch Thorp and
Jason Laycock slotted through two goals each for their
teams.
BURNING QUESTION:
Can North Launceston show the same form and
swagger against in-form cross town rival Launceston as
it has against the two bottom teams?
Where to now for Hobart and North Hobart after pretty
insipid performances in round two?
Last week we travelled to Youngtown to take
on South Launceston. Well done to the colts
with a solid win. Once again there were some
good signs from the young Dockers with a
lot of players adapting well to the new Colts
system.
Our seniors had to come from behind to earn
their first four points of the year. The game
was played in good spirits and the young
Bulldogs team really made the boys work hard.
There was some good signs out of the game
and Jason Laycock showed that he isn’t far
away from tearing a game apart.
Great to see two of our boys making their AFL
debut for the Gold Coast Suns over recent
weeks. Mav Weller debut against the Western
Bulldogs in round 3 and Luke Russell in round
4 against Melbourne. Keep up the good work.
Today we take on arch rival Devonport in the
traditional Good Friday clash. Best wishes to
Sam and Claye who for the first time come up
against their old side.
The club is now taking booking for the 7th May
The seniors after a slow start recorded a good
win. Strong performances by Jackson O’Brien
and Aaron French with good contributions
across the board eventually turned the game
our way.
In the Colts strong performances by Ryan
Bailey and Sean Tisdale were not enough to
carry the day and a narrow loss was recorded.
Round 2 was another tough day at the office
against a strong North Launceston Club, but
our coaching panel are already beginning
to see improvements being made especially
amongst the young players. Damon Howe,
Liam Williams and Hayden Reid were some of
the big improvers.
This week’s Good Friday clash against the
Burnie Dockers will be yet another step
forward for the side. This coastal rivalry is
always a real test for every player young and
old. Some fans may be expecting Burnie to
be far stronger than the Devonport side but
expect them to show real spirit to attempt to
knock off the rival from down the highway.
Thursday night teas at the Club have now been
underway for 2 weeks. Many comments have
been received commenting on the quality of
the catering. Meals are $10 per person for a
decent size meal. We encourage all Devonport
supporters to get along and be a part of our
this week’s prize money at $400.
A big thank you to all of the wonderful Club
At a press conference last Friday at the TCA the
following three announcements were made
No 1 Badge Holder
The Hobart Football Club is proud and
honoured to announce the appointment of
David O’Byrne MP as the Club’s No 1 Badge
Holder in season 2011. David is currently
the Minister for Economic Development;
Infrastructure; Workplace Relations;
Innovation, Science & Technology.
Benny the Tiger
The Hobart Football Club formally announces
the arrival of its new mascot, Benny the Bengal
Tiger shipped exclusively from the jungles of
deepest Bengal to replace his faded cousin
who adorns the walls of the Tiger Den!
“yes” OPTUS announced as the Club’s naming
right’s sponsor
Club President Philip Baker in announcing
the new sponsorship partnership states;
“this represents the growing market place
image of the TSL and of the member Clubs
such as Hobart”, and further “it provides an
opportunity for our partner in ‘yes’ OPTUS to
leverage their brand off the Hobart Football
Club whilst at the same time the Club
benefits from its association with a national
corporation”.
An evening with Mark Maclure
19th May – Former Carlton Captain Mark
Maclure will be our guest in the Clubrooms
He made his senior VFL debut midway through
the 1974 season against Geelong. He stayed
with the Blues for an impressive thirteen
seasons during which he played 243 games
and kicked 327 goals.
Some of his greatest career achievements
included representing Victoria, and heading
Carlton’s goal kicking list twice. He was also
Carlton’s premiership centre half forward in
their premiership teams of 1979, 1981 and
1982. He portrayed a sometimes fearsome
physical presence towards opponents but was
ferociously protective of smaller team mates in
the forward lines.
Maclure was named the Blues captain for
the season of 1986 season, but it was not a
successful year for him as he was troubled
by injuries. He recovered enough to take the
Blues into a finals campaign but it proved not
to be successful as they lost to Hawthorn in
the Grand Final that year. He retired shortly
afterwards.
These days, Mark works as an expert football
commentator for ABC radio, a panellist on
AFL 360 and is also the General Manager of
Valvoline Car Care.
What a terrific win by our colts last weekend
against Glenorchy and a big well done to
Ryan Wiggins for kicking 9. Our senior team
found the going a bit tough against a very slick
Glenorchy again a bit later in the year at our
On the road this weekend to Youngtown to
Two punters, ‘alltheway’ and ‘RubyG’ maintained
their perfect record, but this week’s games
should provide a sterner test.
This week’s winner Mr Ronald Clifford of Kings
Meadows tipped 5 out of 5 and has won
the weekly prize of $250 and a Radio Sport
National KB Sherrin.
YOUNG GUNS | Training and Teaching the Modern Young Footballer
Football of today seems so more complex to learn for
a young player than it was 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
With the advancement of zones, structures, defensive
acts and styles of play has come the need for young
players to become more rounded players, no matter
what position they play.
Once upon a time, the full forward and crumbing
forward pocket were there to kick goals – period! Now
these players are picked in the side as much for what
they deliver defensively as what they contribute on the
scoreboard.
The same can be said for backline players where once
their job was to beat their opponent 1 on 1 and just
clear the ball out of the defensive area, now these
players need to be the team’s best decision makers
with the ball and have a high skill level to match.
Last but not least is the change in roles for midfield
players where a centreman used to play in the centre
all day against his opponent and a rover would change
in the forward pocket and only come off if he had
done something wrong. A good midfielder would aim
to outlast his opponent with endurance. Now playing
in the midfield is all about speed, power and intensity
with most midfield players rotating on and off the
bench every 6-8 minutes in flat out, powerful bursts.
Most coaches who are involved with young players
played the game themselves in a different era and
herein lay the challenge for these coaches.
A lot of the principles haven’t changed in football.
Kicking (still the most important skill in the game),
handball, marking and ball gathering are still and will
continue to be vital elements of teaching to young
(and mature) players. You can have the best game
plan in the world but if your players cannot execute
the fundamental skills of the game it is doomed to
fail. These fundamental skills should always underpin
further skill and game development.
The modern young footballer when he gets the ball in
his hands has many more decisions to make in today’s
football. Does he play on quickly, does he slow the play
up, does he go forward, sideways or even backwards?
How can players be taught what to do?
Doing “skill drills” has been superseded to a large
extent by “game sense” training in today’s football.
When “coaching” these skills today, it needs to
be a priority to put the players in decision making
and/or pressure situations whilst performing these
fundamentals skills. The benefit of this training also is
that young players really do enjoy it. They are playing
the game!
When you next watch AFL teams or other invasion ball
sports like soccer, rugby, hockey, etc training you will
notice how much game sense training they do.
YOUNG PLAYER AWARD | Our Rising Stars
This week’s winner is Calen Jeffery from Hobart. After an injury marred end to
season 2010, Calen has only just returned from a significant hip injury and was
named best player for Hobart in his debut senior game. This is a terrific effort
and a reward for the commitment Calen has shown to his rehabilitation over
summer. Calen played the game on a Half Back flank – a feature of his game
was his ability to rebound from defence with a high number of “give and go”
possessions that set up his team mates up the field.
COMPETITIONS | Clarence v Claremont (WA) | Foxtel Cup
The Foxtel Cup knockout competition features 16
clubs from throughout Australia.
The AFL has planted the seed for FA Cup-style
battles with the official unveiling of the Foxtel Cup, a
state-league based knockout competition for 2011.
The 16 second-tier clubs - three each from the VFL,
WAFL, SANFL, two each from Queensland and New
South Wales, and one each from the ACT, Tasmania
and Northern Territory - begin their cup campaigns
between March 26 and May 21.
The participating teams for 2011 are: Swan Districts
(WA), Claremont (WA), East Perth (WA), North
Ballarat (Vic), Northern Bullants (Vic), Williamstown
(Vic), West Adelaide (SA), North Adelaide (SA), Port
Adelaide Magpies (SA), Morningside (Qld), Labrador
(Qld), NT Thunder (NT), Clarence (Tasmania), Ainslie
(ACT) and East Coast Eagles (NSW).
AFL newcomers Greater Western Sydney Giants will
play in the first year of the four-round tournament,
which will be broadcast live and exclusive on Fox
Sports through the season.
Foxtel Cup fixtures will be played as curtain raisers
to AFL matches through the home-and-away
season.
Adelaide Crows great Andrew McLeod will be one of
the stars of the Foxtel Cup. He will play for Northern
Territory Thunder in 2011.
The tournament could prove to be a recruiting field
for AFL teams, following the success of VFL stars
Michael Barlow and James Podsiadly.
AFL national development manager David Matthew
said “16 of the best teams across Australia” had
jumped at the chance to play in the competition.
GWS coach Kevin Sheedy said his side would be
“very competitive” in 2011, and would be desperate
to add a first trophy to their cabinet.
I am very excited. This is a competition that really
connects Australia. Not many of them do. The AFL
does. But when you get that league underneath
the AFL, you have the opportunity to judge a player
when you are recruiting. Every state and every
territory are in this league. I think some of the great
clubs are represented.
Matthews said there was a possibility that the
winner of the Foxtel Cup could win their way into
a pre-season competition and take on the game’s
elite in the future.
The Tasmanian representative is reining Wrest Point
State League premiers, Clarence. The Roos are
playing West Australian powerhouse Claremont at
Bellerive Oval this Saturday night. The winner of the
game will continue on in the competition and play
the winner of the game between VFL team Northern
Bullants and the new Greater Western Sydney who
will debut in the AFL in 2012.
