7 SEPTEMBER DECLARED A HOLIDAY FOR ERANO MANALO FUNERAL
Today, 7 September 2009, has been declared a holiday by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in
deference to the funeral of Erano Manalo, Executive Minister of the Iglesia ni Cristo.
This example of ecumenism is inspiring because it shows that differences in religion should
not be a barrier to the recognition of an upright leader and good person. The community of St. Paul
University Manila joins the members of the Iglesia ni Cristo in honoring their late leader.

2, the highlight of the
celebration of Euro Week
begins on 7 September 2009.
Three universities--
the University of the
Philippines, the Ateneo de
Manila University, and St.
Paul University Manila--will
take turns hosting the events
of the celebration, which has
been organized by the
different European Embassies
in the Philippines.

the week.
Note that the
activities on Wednesday and
Thursday, 9-10 September
2009, will be held in SPU
Manila.

SPU MANILA RESEARCH OFFICER WINS GRAND PRIZE
IN LINGGO DE LINGUA 2 LOGO MAKING CONTEST

Mr. Brian Bantugan, SPU Manila Institutional Research Officer, won the grand prize in the logo
making contest for the Linggo de Lingua Europa 2.
The prize winning logo is the one used
in the poster above.
The winners were presented in a press
conference held on 3 September 2009. The
entries were reviewed by a panel of judges
composed of representatives of the host
universities, the European Union Embassies,
and the Delegation of the European
Commission to the Philippines. They were
judged on the art work’s articulation of the
website, creativity, and artistic merit.

SPU SYSTEM SCHOOLS FINALIZE ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE MANUAL
The Environmental Stewardship Committee
of the St. Paul University System
member schools met in SPU Dumaguete
on 29 August 2009 to finalize the resource
manual prepared early this year for the
use of the member schools.
Ivy Coronel, SPU Manila’s
Environmental Stewardship Coordinator,
represented the university in the meeting
of the committee, which is being chaired
by Sr. Nilda Masirag, SPC, SPU
Dumaguete President. She is shown

The resource manual, tentatively titled Becoming
Environmental Stewards, is near completion and will hopefully be
distributed before the end of this semester.
It was also announced by Sr. Nilda that the manual will be
her last project as Chair of the Committee since in the last meeting
of the SPUS Presidents, it was decided that she will revert to
chairing the Student Affairs Committee and Ms. Wynna Medina will
take charge of the Environmental Stewardship Committee.
It was also announced by Sr. Nilda that SPU Dumaguete
and SPU Philippines (Tuguegarao) received confirmation from the
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that
they are both finalists (representing their respective regions) in the
2009 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools.

SPU MANILA FACULTY MEMBER CO-AUTHORS ENGLISH BOOKS

Congratulations to Ms. Lourna Tagay for coauthoring
four English books commissioned by
Don Bosco School.
Ms. Tagay is an English Teacher and
Former Chairperson of the Mass Communication
Program of the university.
She gave copies of the books to Ms.
Medina at a courtesy visit on 14 July 2009,
shown in the picture.
HRM UPDATES

Two students of the Hotel and Restaurant Management Program of
St. Paul University Manila were adjudged CHAMPION in the Fruit and
Vegetable Carving Competition during the recently concluded QCNa
Kulinarya 2009 held on 22-23 August 2009 in the Eastwood Mall, Libis
Quezon City.
The student participants were Mark Anthony Gallano and Ma.
Corazon Canlas. Their coach was Chef Ramoncito San Jose.

In the Food Showdown Cocktail Mixing Competition, Mr.
Nikolai Cabral was one of the finalists. The finals were held on 4
September 2009 at A Venue in Makati City.
CHILEAN STUDENT SENDS THANK YOU LETTER
Grace Garcia-Huidobro, one of the Chilean students who came to St. Paul University Manila last year
to take studies in Teaching English as a Second Language, wrote this letter to Ms. Medina:
Dear Miss Wynna:
It's been a long time since the last time I knew from you, I hope you are fine, this time I'm writing
because I had good news.

Last September 4th I had my grade exam to get my English Teacher title, and I pass, now
I'm officially an English Teacher.
I just want to thank you and to all the people that I meet in the Philippines because in some way you
were an inspiration to accomplish my dream and for me being there was an experience that I'll never
forget, and made think that I want to be a teacher and now I'm an English Teacher,
