Farewell Tim Zwar
An era will finish on December 21 when long serving staff member Tim Zwar departs the SSV office as a
DEECD employee for the final time. After 37 years with the Department Tim has decided to 'hang up his boots'
and embark on other opportunities. He has been a constant within School Sport for just on 30 years, starting in
the mid 1980's as a Sport Coordinator in the then VSSSA Southern Zone before becoming the Southern Zone
Officer for 16 years. For the last 8 years he has overseen our State Programs. There are tens of thousands of
students who have benefitted from Tim's dedication, from local school sport through to elite level athletes in our
state teams. Tim has always been committed to providing the best possible service to schools and their
teachers ... how many of us will miss his knowledge of Excel and the legendary 'TimTrack'. Although we say
farewell as he embarks on a new challenge we hope we will see him in a voluntary capacity at SSV events.
Good luck Tim !
Champion Primary School Teams Challenge Iconic Melbourne Clubs
Heany Park PS upsets Collingwood Football Club … Congratulations to Heany Park Primary School and
Murrumbeena Primary School, winners of the School Sport Victoria Westpac Cup 2012. The cup is awarded to
the champion schools of the Primary Schools Girls and Boys/Mixed Football Championships for 2012. The
competition is part of the SSV inter school sport program and supported by Collingwood Football Club and
Westpac. The girls from Heany Park enjoyed a fast and furious game of football against Collingwood at Gosch’s
Paddock, followed by a tour of the new Westpac Centre, the home of Collingwood. The Heany Park team put
pressure on the Collingwood boys, with some outstanding marking, kicking and tackling, which resulted in the
girls taking out the honours by a slim margin. The boys from Murrumbeena Primary were on school camp so
Collingwood will visit their school for their game. Heany Park and Murrumbeena won their district competition
and then continued via knock out through division, region and conference levels, qualifying for the state finals.
Our thanks to Collingwood and Westpac for their continued support of School Sport Victoria and The Westpac
Cup.
Lumen Christi PS and Croydon Hills PS overcome Melbourne Vixens ... Lumen Christi Primary School and
Croydon Hills Primary School challenged Melbourne Vixens to a game of netball held recently at Lumen Christi
Primary in Point Cook. Both schools were winners of the Jason Cup 2012. The Jason Cup is the School Sport
Victoria Primary Schools girls and boys/mixed netball competition. Lumen Christi won the girls netball and
Croydon Hills won the primary boys/mixed netball. The Vixens brought out their ‘‘big guns’’ including Sharelle
McMahon, returning to the court for her first game after taking a break for the birth of baby Xavier. Try as they
might, the Vixens were challenged across the court by some outstanding passing, shooting and defending by
the players from both primary schools. The cheer squad of students and parents from both schools were clearly
on the side of the students and helped carry them to victory. School Sport Victoria would like to acknowledge
this ‘‘once in a life time’’ opportunity provided by both Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens.
Relationships between Schools and Swimming Clubs
Swimming Victoria has been working closely with the School Sport Victoria Swimming Sub Committee
throughout 2012. A major focus area has been to develop an opportunity for schools to seek support from their
local swimming club and for the local swimming club to make contact with schools where they may be able to
assist with some of the following - facilities, officials, conducting encouragement events for school students,
assisting teachers in preparing their school team for the local swimming sports. To facilitate this, a letter
templates have been created which schools & clubs can personalise to forward to the local swimming
club/school seeking an opportunity to chat about how they may be able to work together.
