PRESIDENT’S
COMMENT
Terry Calvert
ClubStar really is a fantastic
opportunity for the young ones and
what an amazing motivational tool!
Another month has passed and it’s all been fast and furious at the Fellowship!
The wealth of talent I’ve got to work with under the presidential belt never ceases
to amaze me – collectively we’ve got plans to really fly the fellowship flag.
I’d like to welcome on-board Kevin Arkell as our Chairman – read up about his hopes and
aspirations for the future of the Fellowship in our the Presidents Interview. We welcome our
fabulous F.A.M.E. Team back from downunder and read about their wonderful adventure.
It was wonderful to meet and greet old and new Fellowship members on our Members
Night hosted by L’Oréal on the 12th July. An amazing evening attended by current
British Hairdresser of the Year, Akin Konizi who took time out from his busy schedule to
be interviewed by yours truly. Evenings like this is what the Fellowship is all about –
I always tend to be thanking Ann Herman in my ‘comment’, however she’s worthy –
her coordination of this event was amazing.
We take time to go behind the scenes with ClubStar’s Simon Shaw and meet the Fabulous
Four plus two reserves of the brand new ClubStar Art Team, who are being mentored by the
brilliantly talented Jamie Stevens. What a lucky bunch! Salon owners, ClubStar really is a
fantastic opportunity for the young ones and what an amazing motivational tool!
Also thank you HOB and past president Sean Dawson for the sensational cover that earned
him the title of Image of the Year at the Fellowship Luncheon and Awards.
All the very best.
Terry Calvert
President
The Fellowship for British Hairdressing would like to thank all our Business Partners for their invaluable support throughout 2010.
the
interview
president’s
Terry Calvert interviews Kevin Arkell
the new Fellowship Chairman
As President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, I’ve created a series of interviews with members of the Fellowship Council
as I feel that it is important to introduce fellow members to the team that make the Fellowship tick. Here I interview Kevin Arkell
the new Fellowship Chairman.
TC You had retired from the Fellowship but
decided to become Chairman again – why?
KA I have always loved the Fellowship and
everything that it stands for. I have been
actively involved for over twenty years and
during that time I have had the privilege to
be President for three years and also acted
as Chairman for over a year. I felt that the
Fellowship needed to adapt to the current
market conditions and I heard that you
were trying to move things forward, so I
thought it was time to come back and help
move things forward in a positive way.
TC You’ve been involved with the Fellowship
for many years, how has it changed from the
early days to now?
KA Whilst the ethos of the Fellowship
remains it has changed enormously. From
being a “Club” for hairdressers who were
mainly interested in competition
hairdressing it has become the major
creative organisation in the country. I think
it also reflects how our industry has
changed, it now has many more “celebrity
hairdressers” and more commercially savvy
hairdressers. This has been a gradual change
over the years and arguably we are now
ready for further change.
WWW.FELLOWSHIPHAIR.COM 2 WWW.CLUBSTARHAIR.CO.UK

TC What does your role as Chairman
involve?
KA Good question. Of course it involves
chairing meetings, but it is far more than
that. The role is to support the President
and Council in the strategy of the
Fellowship. I have to ensure the traditions
are upheld but also empower people to
make changes and progress. I have to
ensure that the administration and the
finances are on a firm footing and the
organisation can support the activities.
TC I’m keen to increase our membership over
the next two years – how would you like to
see this happen?
KA We have always said we should
represent the top 10% of hairdressers, and
whilst we have a healthy membership we
do not have anything like the 2500 to 3000
that would make that 10%. Increasing
membership is always best done by
recommendation. If every current member
of the Fellowship introduced one
worthwhile new member that would set us
on course to achieve our target. I also see
new young members through the ClubStar
initiative as being a great way of recruiting
new members in the future. It also seems to
I felt that the Fellowship needed
to adapt to the current market
conditions, and I heard that you
were trying to move things
forward, so I thought it was time
to come back and help things
move forward in a positive way
me that all F.A.M.E. Team members,
Project X members and Colour Project
members should automatically become full
Fellowship members. We just need to look
at changing some of our rules to make this
happen.
TC Education and motivation is close to my
heart, what do you think the Fellowship
offers over other organisations that make us
stand out?
KA Fellowship offers something quite
different. In principle we offer the
opportunity to see all the great masters of
our craft demonstrating to our members,
we offer insight into what makes the
“Greats” tick. We then offer lots of education
for young hairdressers, through Project X
and Colour Project. These offer unique
opportunities to be taught by the biggest
names in our industry, do photographic
shoots, appear on stage both here and
abroad. Where else can you have access to
so much talent - only through membership
of the Fellowship?
TC Project X is really gathering pace as a
Fellowship stable. Where would you like to
see this going?
KA Continuing on from what I have
previously mentioned, I believe we could
easily run two Project X groups, maybe one
for youngsters and one for more
experienced people. It’s great that the best
of Project X will usually move on into the
F.A.M.E. Team.
TC I’m talking about opening up the
Fellowship to the consumer media,
what are your thoughts on this?
KA I think this is the
next change for the
Fellowship. We need to
bring clients to our
members. We need the
press and the public to
recognise that we have
the countries best
hairdressers in our
organisation, so why not
use that to everyone’s
benefit? Hopefully in
two years time we will
have started to achieve
that public recognition
through the consumer
media.
TC If manufacturers want to get more
involved, what can the Fellowship offer them
in return?
KA Manufacturers are a key sector in our
industry, they are incredibly supportive of
the Fellowship and their sponsorships really
help us to put on the type of events and
activities that our members want and
demand. Without their funding we would
be unable to put on all the events that we
do. In return I believe the manufacturers
like to have association with the Fellowship
because it gives their clients the opportunity
to appear with their icons. I do think we
need to explore more ways in which our
manufacturers can participate in the
Fellowship and ensure their voices are
heard.
I see us being
a very successful
partnership, with
you having all the
creative ideas and
drive, and me
supporting you
and ensuring the
organisation and
finances are in place
TC Who do you admire in the industry?
KA You! Plus I have been very lucky to have
worked with some of the greatest names in
our industry. It would be impossible to
name all the people here that I admire.
I admire you all for different reasons. But
the people who were the most inspirational
for me were Annie Humphries, Tim Hartley,
Nicky Clarke, Trevor Sorbie, and Tony Rizzo.
TC How do you see us both working together
as your time as Chairman?
KA I see us being a very successful
partnership, with you having all the creative
ideas and drive and also being the public
face of the Fellowship, with me supporting
you and ensuring the organisation and
finances are in place so that we can achieve
all our goals and objectives.
MEDIA MATTERS
GEMMAWARD
Currently Editor of
The Salon Magazine,
Gemma Ward has
worked as a journalist
in the hair and beauty
industry for over five
years
What does your job involve?
I’m in charge of the entire editorial content of The Salon Magazine
from sourcing the stories and images to proof-reading and
sub-editing my work. If I’m not at my desk writing, I’m running
around meeting people, discovering new launches and trying out
treatments at salons and spas.
I’m constantly on the hunt for brilliant
hair and beauty professionals, amazing
salons and great business minds as
well as industry news and product
innovations
How did you get to where you are today?
I trained in journalism at university and was lucky enough to be
employed as a Features Writer for Scratch magazine. While there
I learned a huge amount about the nail side of the salon industry,
but after reaching the Deputy Editor position, I decided I wanted
to branch out into the hair and beauty sectors and moved onto my
current position.
Have you always had a keen interest in hair and beauty?
Yes, very much so. I spent all of my pocket money on products when
I was younger and I even asked my parents for a perm for my tenth
birthday (and after much persuasion, they agreed!). I considered
becoming a hairdresser but in the end I decided to go into
journalism. I just never thought I’d be lucky enough to find a job
that combined the best of both worlds.
Who cuts your hair?
I'm very fortunate because I'm constantly offered free hair services by
some of the most talented hairdressers in the industry. However
Danny Puopolo at the Mowgli Aveda Lifestyle Salon and Spa in
St John's Wood has been cutting and colouring my hair regularly for
the past three years. During that time I've gone from extremely long
to short and platinum blonde to dark brown – he’s an extremely
talented stylist and colourist and we have so much fun
experimenting together.
What’s a typical working day for you?
The best thing about my job is there's no typical day. There's no time
to get bored because every moment is different. I'm on a constant
learning curve from the products I find out about to the people
I meet – the industry never stands still.
Whose work in the hair and beauty industry do you most admire?
I'm a huge fan of fashion work and love watching what's on the
catwalks as well as looking out for beautiful photography. I've been
lucky enough to see some of the industry's best in action backstage
at London and Milan Fashion weeks as well as behind the scenes at
major shoots. To see real masters at work is very inspirational.
What do you think of the Fellowship?
It’s plays an integral role in the industry and is partly why British
hairdressing so great. It makes me proud to think that the world
looks to the UK for inspiration and the Fellowship is the frontrunner
in giving people the chance to shine, nurturing fresh talent and
celebrating what is great about being a hairdresser.
How do you select stories for The Salon Magazine?
I’m constantly on the hunt for brilliant hair and beauty professionals,
amazing salons and great business minds as well as industry news
and product innovations. If you have a story you think might be of
interest for the magazine, or if you’d like to be featured, please drop
me an email.
MEMBERS’
Night
REPORT BY JULIE ALLEN
PHOTOS BY TONY HENNESSEY
The Fellowship for British
Hairdressing presented 2010’s
second Members’ Night of the
year at the L’Oréal Academy
in Hammersmith.
Members’ Night is an important part of the Fellowship calendar
as it gives opportunities for both old and new members to present
their work. Those that shine are often given the chance to
represent the Fellowship at other events such as Masterclass!
or Salon International.
The show was introduced by the Fellowship’s President,
Terry Calvert and compered by Ruth Hunsley and David Drew.
The evening opened with a presentation from SMARTEST 73
from Weston-Super-Mare who wowed the audience with their 40’s
themed showcase created by current World Ladies Hairdressing
Champion, Steven Smart.
The audience was then delighted by a presentation courtesy of
The Point, Brighton, directed by Senior Stylist Simon Webster.
The non-conformist female pirates from the Renaissance period
were both decadent and rebellious, with clothes expertly sourced
from Renaissance of Brighton influenced by John Galiano and
Westwood. Although salon owner Ian Habben has been a member
of the Fellowship for many years, tonight was their debut on the
Fellowship stage.
CLUB 21 are no strangers to the stage and this experienced team did
not disappoint. A fabulous portrayal of ‘circus’ perfectly entertained
the audience with styling to be congratulated.
photographic, show, education or owning a franchise.
It’s all possible.” Talking of his nomination for 2010 British
Hairdresser of the Year, Akin would not reveal the finer details of
his entry apart from the fact that it ticked the box!
Returning to the Members’ Night presentations, Ciente from
Berkhamstead presented two models with innovative looks
inspired by the World Cup.
MOVA hair produced a collection of four beautiful commercial
looks. The two salon group applauded the opportunity to
present at the event by saying what an amazing learning curve
it was to present and how it has helped to progress their team.
The Saks A Team presented STREET MANGTASTIC. Inspired
by Japanese street culture, the models were expertly styled and
complete images were outstanding.
Award winning salon group Peter Prosser from Hereford
presented an original collection named OCEAN CHIC.
The Gallery from Tunbridge Wells made their debut. Portraying
their unconditional love for hairdressing, their four models were
exquisitely coiffed and the presentation well choreographed.
The Gallery’s Mario Failla was well supported by the audience.
Antonio Giovanni from Ipswich presented a stunning trio of models
from their Runway collection. The vibrant colours were enhanced
by the strong shapes and angles of the haircuts.
Following the first section of the evening Terry Calvert took time
out to interview British Hairdresser of the Year 2008 and 2009,
Akin Konizi from HOB. Akin enthused about the evening,
congratulating the teams who were taking part for their passion,
dedication and enthusiasm. Talking of his own inspiration Akin told
the audience that he was inspired by the continual progression of
HOB. “We are always moving forward as a company and our team are
encouraged to go as far as they want to, whether their interests lie in
The evening was
fantastic, the work was
hugely creative and the
talent and the passion
of the teams shone
through. I thoroughly
enjoyed myself!
The team, led by Kristina Jones, took ideas from both the colour
palettes of the seascapes but also the textures, replicating shell
formations. A stunning presentation.
Members of the P.Kai Art Team made their debut with a salute to the
redhead. Donna Tovey and Sophie Thackeray’s presentation
showed varying shades of redhead models.
From Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, came Strangeways, whose rockabilly
runway was well executed with some intelligent cuts and styling.
The evening continued with ClubStar’s ambassador, Jamie Stevens
presenting the ClubStar Young Artistic Team. He spoke about how
successful ClubStar is – aimed at 16-25 year olds at just £49 it gives
the opportunity to be part of the very best British hairdressing
events. The team was picked through a competition held at
Alan d Academy and as the standard was so high 6 were selected
for the ClubStar’s Young Artistic Team – Jack Spencer, Jonathan de
Francesco, Samantha Langford and Matthew Evans with the two
eserves Arash Moghaddami and Heather Whincup. First to the
platform was Jack Spencer from hug 8 with his inspiration from
Alexander McQueens collection. Then came ClubStar team reserve
Arash Moghaddami from Karine Jackson with his stunning cut and
colour inspired by the ash cloud, Matt Evans from Goldsworthy’s
with his Florence Welch inspired model – from geek to chic and
Samantha Langford from Ciente who presented a short sharp look
saluting the underwear as the new outerwear. The fourth member
of the ClubStar Artistic Team, Jonathan de Francesco, was unable to
present so Arash was thanked for stepping in. The other reserve is
Heather Wincup who was happy to support the team members
behind the scenes.
Concluding the evening, Terry Calvert thanked the hosts L’Oréal,
the teams, the comperes and Ann Herman who organised the
whole event. Tanya Hennessy from Hair XS, Nottingham, said;
“The evening was fantastic, the work was hugely creative and the talent and
the passion of the teams shone through. I thoroughly enjoyed myself!”
CLUBSTAR
COLOUR BEHINDTHE
SIMON SH
BY SALLY LEARMOUTH
Twenty-five years ago, along with a partner, Simon Shaw founded Haringtons.
Two years ago the opportunity arose to sell his shares. As Simon had always
been involved in training and education, the natural progression was for him
to start an education company, so Simon Shaw education was born.
Why did you get involved with ClubStar?
I am passionate about developing young people. At the start of
a company you often have some spare time, an old friend and the
current Fellowship President Terry Calvert approached me.
He began talking to me about ClubStar, which is effectively the
youth arm of the Fellowship. His brief to me was to make ClubStar
exciting, fun, cool and something that young people would want to
belong to. Jamie Stevens was and is acting as the artistic drive and
face of ClubStar, my role is an organising and managing role.
What sort of events are on offer?
Emma who works in the Fellowship office is dedicated to making
things happen and is a fantastic asset. Without her all of our ideas
wouldn’t happen. Between us we set about creating a calendar of
events that have the potential to motivate and inspire our members.
We were able to put together ten events for 2010 that are a mix
between shows and hands on seminars. We kicked off the year with
a stunning show by the Toni and Guy Art Team, Gary France was
instrumental in making this event happen. We had over 70 people in
the audience and the energy in the room was inspiring. We have had
other shows from Tim Scott Wright and the team at Lisa Shepherd,
this event took place in Wolverhampton and was the first time we
had put on an event outside London. This was also a huge success
with close to a hundred people in the audience.
Mahogany put on a fabulous demonstration in their London
academy. Their generosity was stunning and they offered training
days as prizes for ClubStar members. They followed their
demonstration some weeks later with training days for twelve lucky
members who worked on their own models, assisted by members of
the Mahogany Art Team. The feedback from these sessions is hugely
valuable. I think the age group we aim at, 16-25, really appreciate
hands on education. Katie Mulcahy and her team from Lisa
Shepherd also put on a training day in Wolverhampton, which was
a great success.
Tell us about the auditions that just took place for the art team.
We recently held auditions for our very own ClubStar Art Team, our
intention is to form a group who can inspire and educate our other
young members. For their audition they were asked to present a
finished model, a mood board around the trends for autumn/winter
2010 and then give a three minute presentation about their model
and what inspired them. The nerves were nearly as high as the
standard of the work; the chosen team of four are Jack Spencer of
hug 8 hairdressing, Samantha Langford of Cienté, Jonathan de
Francesco of Benjamin Ryan Hair and Matthew Evans of
Goldsworthy’s. Their first assignment was a slot at the Fellowship
Members’ Night on the 12th July when Jamie Stevens worked with
them on the day to get them ready for their big night.
What other competitions are there - at Salon for example - and do you
have to be a ClubStar member to enter?
Later in the year, at Salon international we will be running a
competition to find the best overall look. Last year's winner
Sophia Hilton from Brooks and Brooks produced a stunning total
look on her model, she went on to produce an amazing photograph
with the help of photographer Mo Nabbach. This image was chosen
as a front cover for the Fellowship Magazine. We have an event on
the 2nd August which is exciting because it is slightly different to
anything we have done before. Allilon is a company started by
Pedro Inchenko and Jonny Othona, two ex Vidal Sassoon art
directors. They will be demonstrating their unique style of cutting
hair in the morning and in the afternoon they will be helping
students to sketch out their ideas. Working on section patterns
I think they will be inspired to go back to the salon and create
the look they have worked on. It is a requirement to be a
ClubStar member to enter the Art Team and the Salon International
competition.
How much does it cost and who should join?
All shows are free to members and priority on workshops
is given to members. Non-members can attend shows at a
FELLOWSHIP AWARD WINNERS
Inspirational
BY MARIA WEIJERS
General Manager of HOB Salons, past President of the Fellowship and very talented
hairdresser Sean Dawson quite rightly won the organisation’s 2009 Image of the
Year Award. Sean took five to give Maria Weijers time to delve into his thinking.
Sean Dawson: an award-winning hairdresser with over 23 years’
industry experience, including salon, show, photographic, media
and ambassadorial work.
Affable, charismatic and utterly charming, April 2006 to March 2008
saw Sean taking up a two-year presidency of the Fellowship for
British Hairdressing, a natural leap of responsibility given he is the
youngest person ever to have been made a ‘Fellow with Distinction’
when just 30 years old.
“The best part about being the Fellowship President was that it was just so
enjoyable,” says Sean. “You’re surrounded by top professionals with strong
backgrounds all giving their time and expertise voluntarily and you’re all
striving to achieve one goal – ultimate excellence in all areas.
“To be honest, I was quite surprised to be invited to take on the presidency
and it turned out to be a real turning point in my career. It was very
rewarding that top people listened to me and embraced what I wanted to do.
It inspired me a lot, it was a great confidence builder,” explains Sean.
One of Sean’s commendable intentions was to make the Fellowship
more accessible to younger people and work towards making a
difference for the next generation.
“I really had to think that one through,” says Sean. “I wanted to freshen
up the organisation without losing its core values and traditions. I had to
balance making it look and feel younger, while still reflecting decades of the
Fellowship’s ethos.
“I had to think of every angle when coming up with new ideas; will the
mature members accept it? What will the younger crew make of it?
How about the sponsors? Would they be happy with their money being used
that way? I had to make sure it was all compatible to everyone’s expectations
and luckily, I could sound out ideas with the experienced Fellowship people
I had to hand,” says Sean.
Considerate thinking is second nature to this talented hairdresser,
whose role within HOB is to draw the best out of everyone.
“I’ve always pushed myself creatively and I love to inspire and motivate
others to levels they didn’t think possible,” he says.
And generously, Sean freely volunteers his gifted wife Claire to be
the most creative hairdresser he’s ever met – with a head start on
him. “She’s a natural born hairdresser and can turn her hand naturally
to anything she wants to achieve whereas I’ve always had to work at it,”
he says.
Does this mean fierce competition between husband and wife?
He breezily brushes off the suggestion. “No, no. Not at all. We have
great mutual respect and totally appreciate each other’s strengths, sharing
ideas for the benefit of the whole.”
So how does the Image of the Year winner formulate, create and
shape his artistic ideas – where is the start point? “Well the model is
key. I always educate people not to skimp on model costs. My work is strong
so I usually choose strong, beautiful models who can carry off the look.”
“Image direction-wise, I always keep track of what fashion’s doing. I must
admit I tend to look more at London and Paris catwalks and try to gauge a
feel for where the strength’s coming from,” explains Sean.
“I then research the era and rather than just copy the look, I lock myself away
with a pen and paper to work out how I can make the look totally ‘now’, then
start working on a live model to make the influences current.
“With the 80s being so dominant last time, I looked to Annabella Lwin who
fronted 80s New Wave band Bow Wow Wow, created by Malcolm McLaren
to promote his and business partner Vivienne Westwood’s New Romantic
fashion.
“It’s a look which appears simplistic but actually, it’s quite complex to create.
Many people appreciate its beauty, but can come a bit unstuck when they try
and recreate it for themselves...” he concludes with suppressed and
justifiable pride
• He’s a UK Ambassador for Sebastian Professional
Meet: Jonathan De Francesco
from Benjamin Ryan Hair, Birmingham
Age: 18 (Virgo)
Schoolboy Jonathan worked at at his mum’s hairdressing salon
without realising that that would be his chosen career path. Finishing
school at 15 he went to the USA to train under his Mum’s old boss
Peter Webb where he learned all the fundamentals of hairdressing.
Returning to the UK he joined Cudmore & Co as a junior winning
National Student of the Year 2008. Junior Stylist by the age of 17
Jonathan moved on to BRH as a Style Director last year.
Jonathan is enjoying building up a strong loyal clientele whilst
enjoying the experience of fashion shows, photographic shoots as a
member of the team. He even worked on a local television
commercial. At the age of 18 Jonathan gained a place on the
Schwarzkopf Young Artistic Team 2010 and a place on the ClubStar
Artistic team which he is absolutely thrilled about! Jonathan would
like to move into the world of session hairstyling and be more
involved in editorial shoots for fashion magazines. He’d also like to
enter and win at the British Hairdressing Awards.
CLUBSTAR SPECIAL
THESENSA
PHOTOS BY RAY BIRD
Highlight to date? “Joining the ClubStar Artistic Team, I’m so looking
forward to working with Jamie Stevens and the team in the up and coming
events.” Unfortunately Jonathan missed the first ClubStar event due
to holiday commitments – however he looks forward to meeting you
all soon!
Meet: Matt Evans
from Goldsworthy’s Swindon
Age: 25 (Aquarius)
Matt has worked at the multi-award winning Goldsworthy’s salon
for nearly 7 years, since leaving college where he was studying
business. Matt says he chose hairdressing because: “I was fixated about
creating different styles with my hair and after my hairdresser suggested I
try hairdressing as a career I read the Hairdressers Journal and had an
interview with Trevor Sorbie and was hooked”.
Matt heard about the ClubStar opportunities at various Fellowship
events he attended as part of the team. “Originally I was too old to be a
member but when they extended the age and I saw the opportunities open to
ClubStar members I thought it would be mad not to sign up.” For Matt
being a member of ClubStar has opened up a lot of doors including
this fabulous new one of member of the first ever ClubStar Artistic
Team! With the short term goal of opening a Goldsworthy’s
franchise, and a long term goal of further success and a win at the
British Hairdressing Awards, Matt is on the right track. Having won
the regional final for Wella Trendvision this year and also being a
member of the Schwarzkopf Young Artistic Team, this year is indeed
an exceptionally busy one. However, for Matt there’s still nothing
better than that first time he shampooed. “It had a surreal sense of
romance to it as it really made appreciate what a long journey it was going
to be but also how much fun I was going to have along the way.”
With his hairdressing icon being an unshakeable Trevor Sorbie,
Matt also rates the manufacturers trainers very highly.
Meet: Sam Langford
from Cienté in Berkhamsted, Herfordshire.
Age: 20 (Scorpio)
Sam has worked at the Cienté salon for 3 ½ years whilst graduating
from the Joshua Galvin Academy. Sam has won numerous awards in
recognition of her creative skills – but her greatest accolade to date is
being chosen as one of the Fab Four who collectively make the
ClubStar Artistic Team. What Sam loves most about hairdressing is that
fact that she alone is capable of making people feel good and boosting
their confidence. Also the abundance of opportunities that have been
presented to her whilst working at Cienté that lead her to experience
different aspects of hairdressing. Sam’s been a member of ClubStar
since December 09 and enjoys the frequency of the ClubStar events.
With a love of photographic work and getting to think ‘outside the
box’, Sam wants to be more involved with the Fellowship and one day
be a member of the F.A.M.E. Team as she was so inspired by them on
the ClubStar event earlier this year: “I would love to travel around the
world being involved in photoshoots, presentations and sharing my knowledge
and love of hairdressing”, says Sam.
Delighted to have Jamie Stevens as her mentor, Sam says:
“Jamie really boosted our confidence before we went on stage together
for the first ever time at the Fellowship Members’ Night”.
Meet: Jack Spencer
from hug 8 hairdressing in Uxbridge
Age: 18 (Aquarius)
Jack has been at hug 8 for 2 years throughout which time he has
been going to the Joshua Galvin Academy.
Hairdressing has always run in Jack’s family but it was not until he
visited the wholesalers that he decided it was for him!
It was when he was backstage at a Fellowship event with the team at
hug 8 that he learned about ClubStar and knew that he wanted to
join instantly. Working on short term goals – Jack’s immediate
ambition is to win Junior of the Year – a title he is currently
nominated for.
Citing his highlight to date as being his stage presentation at the
Fellowship Members’ Night on 12th July Jack adds; “I get such a
buzz from being up on stage – once up there I didn’t want to get off!”
With Angelo Seminara as his inspiration – Jack comments:
“Angelo is my true icon – his work never ceases to amaze me”.
CLUBSTAR SPECIAL
Meet: Arash Moghaddami
from Karine Jackson, London.
Age: 25 (Leo)
Arash kindly stepped into Jonathan’s footsteps for the ClubStar’s
debut presentation. Having enjoyed a career path in the hairdressing
industry for 5 years, he joined the Karine Jackson salon last year.
Growing up with a multitude of female cousins in Iran, Arash always
had plenty of models to practise on!
“Whenever there was a wedding I seemed to have a waiting list of people
wanting their hair done - when all I had was a dodgy hairdryer & some old
gel. When it came to choosing a career path it was plain to see: I just wanted
to be a hairdresser”.
Hearing about ClubStar at a Fellowship event it was inevitable that
Arash became a member.
With an ambition that is pure and simple: “to create beautiful hair”,
Arash is also keen to explore the industry. “I was on stage at the
Fellowship Members’ Night in January, and also had the opportunity to
enter the L’Oréal Colour Trophy – I’m just enjoying all the opportunities that
are coming my way.”
With his own salon boss Karine Jackson as his clear icon – Arash feels
that he has it made: “Karine inspires me endlessly. I work right next to
her in the salon and see how she works her magic day in day out –
she’s incredible”.
Meet: Heather Whincup
from P Kai Hair, Peterborough
Age: 17 (Virgo)
Heather has worked at the P Kai Hair salon in Peterborough for
2 years – she’s just about to complete her NVQ Level 2.
Apart from work experience in a small salon, P Kai has been her only
job –never having had any doubt that it was indeed a career in
hairdressing that she wanted.
“I just love to have that canvas in front of me – and consulting clients as
to how they would like to feel about their hair and whose hair they admire.
I then go about creating a style that they will absolutely love. What an
amazing way to spend each day!”
The Fellowship’s ClubStar was first brought to Heather’s attention
when she visited Salon. “I spent as much time as possible on the
Fellowship stand – it was amazing – back to back education all the way
through. They were talking about ClubStar and I thought – that’s for me!”
With goals and ambitions which include attending a photo-shoot
clearly in her sight – Heather is delighted to be a reserve.
Heather’s icons are Vidal Sassoon for his precision cutting and
Errol Douglas MBE for his amazing long hair dressing.
chair·man [chair-muhn] – noun
meaning the presiding officer of a
meeting, committee, board, etc. =
is elected as Chair of the main Council and, in addition
to chairing meetings, oversees the practical, financial
and day-to-day management of The Fellowship.
The Chairman’s role is to provide stability and unity
and to help carry out the decisions of the Council
and the policy direction of the President.
I am delighted to be writing this message as Chairman of the
greatest hairdressing organisation in the world. Yes I truly believe
that we do have the greatest hairdressers and the very best
organisation there is.
It is a great honour to be Chairman of the Fellowship and I hope that
I can contribute to its continuing success. The role of the Chairman is
to support the President in all his innovations and creativity, and to
ensure that the organisation is running smoothly in the background
to ensure that the organisation functions effectively and efficiently.
It is also to chair meetings and enable the heart and spirit of the
Fellowship to shine through. We have a very dedicated and
committed team running the Fellowship and it is key that we have
the organisation in place to support this.
These last two years have been difficult times for all businesses,
but, the hairdressing industry seems to have been able to continue its
success. Businesses have been forced to look at how they operate and
examine their cost structures carefully to ensure each business is on a
sound footing.
We in the Fellowship have had to do exactly the same things;
we need to examine what we do, how we do it, and look at our costs.
QUALITY NOT QUANTITY IS THE KEY. It is imperative that we
maintain the very high standards on which our reputation has been
built. We must continue to encourage and assist the young
generation of hairdressers who are our future and we need to
gain the publics awareness for the benefit of our membership.
The Fellowship’s name must always be associated with the very best
that our industry has to offer, and each and every one of us has a
part to play in this. We all need to promote our professionalism and
creativity at every opportunity; we all need to contribute to events
and activities. Our strength has always been through our quality and
now it is even more important to improve and maintain that quality.
If we stand still we go backwards.
I know that our President Terry Calvert and all the Council members
are totally committed to moving the Fellowship forward and I know
that all our members can contribute towards our goals. So let’s do it,
let’s show the rest of the industry what we are all about and cement
our position as the leaders in our beloved industry.
I look forward to continuing the success.
