Create successful ePaper yourself

Turn your PDF publications into a flip-book with our unique Google optimized e-Paper software.

Announce a Publication: Net users love free reports, white papers, and FAQs (frequently asked
questions). This is an excellent way to generate loyalty and repeatvisits. Each new
publishing event is worthy of announcing and increases the value of your site’s content
Share a valuable resource: If you come across important information that members of a group,
such as a new web site or media article, would be interested in, tell them. The other
members will appreciate it particularly if you aren’t associated with the site and do not
benefit from sharing the information (other than normal self-promotion in a signature).
Newsworthy event: If an event occurs that would be of interest to the group, let them know. A
new product or government regulation that affects the groups are two examples. Consider
putting your interpretation on the event and asking for their opinions. This kind of
discussion is often good for several postings.
Taking sides in a controversy: If members in a discussion group take opposing viewpoints, join
in. Add your opinion with supporting logical reasons for it. Don’t post just a "me too" or
"I agree/disagree" message that adds nothing to the discussion. Messages that are "content
deficient" are annoying. Also consider playing the role of mediator by looking for a
compromise position. You will comeacross as "judicious", "reasonable".
Ask members for help: Many net users are extremely helpful. If you are having a problem at your
site, like a hard time generating interest, ask for advice: what you can do differently, how
to promote the site, etc. Be careful about just asking members to visit your site and give
you their feedback without a specific problem in mind. This has been overdone. Members
are less inclined to take the time to visit your site unless you are having a problem. If they
do, it’s probably because they are eager to find an excuse to post a message. Some
moderators no longer post "please visit my site" messages. Having explained your
problem, solicit recommendations from members. Just remember that members won’t take
kindly to transparent excuses for getting them to visit your site. They may even complain
to the other group members about your tactics.
Solicit input for a new page: If you are putting together a new page that will benefit members and
they can help, this is a legitimate posting. Examples are a super directory or nominations
for "best" contest. Many members are eager to participate in such joint projects and
appreciate having the final results made available to them. Let them know when you
publish the results at your web site and invite the members to come visit. This technique
reflects favorably on you and increases your stature in the group.
Comment on trends, problems in your field: Initiating a discussion of current trends in your field
or shared interests makes you seem knowledgeable and on top of current developments.
Be sure and ask for others’ responses to keep the discussion going longer and generate
more opportunities for you to post more messages.
