CPM also Cost per thousand<br />

The cost to the advertiser per 1000 banner impressions. If the CPM cost is $30, the advertiser<br />

pays the host site $30 for every 1000 times the banner ad appears. A variation is "CPTM",<br />

which is the cost per targeted thousand impressions.<br />

Dial-up<br />

A connection to a computer made by calling it up over a telephone line.<br />

Discussion Group<br />

As used in this planning guide, an electronic forum or message board where members of an<br />

online community exchange views, ask and answer questions on a specific topic. Two types of<br />

discussion groups: newsgroups (see "Newsgroups") and mailing lists (see "Mailing Lists").<br />

Download<br />

Transfer of a file from a remote or distant computer to yours, most commonly via the World<br />

Wide <strong>Web</strong> or File Transfer Protocol ("FTP").<br />

Event<br />

An occurrence at your web site that you hope is significant enough to interest target audiences<br />

in visiting.<br />

E-zine<br />

An electronic magazine, usually published on the Internet’s World Wide <strong>Web</strong> or e-mailed to<br />

subscribers. Also called "Zine".<br />

FAQ<br />

A list of frequently asked questions and their answers. Many newsgroups and mailing lists<br />

maintain FAQs to describe what is an acceptable posting.<br />

Flame<br />

A hostile, often personal attack, against the writer of a newsgroup posting, usually someone<br />

who has violated "Netiquette". Flames are a too-common occurrence on the Internet. People<br />

who post flames are often called "flamers".<br />
