The edge of the
Roman Empire...
….and the beginning of your
thrilling Roman adventure.
It was 2,000 turbulent years in the making but you can
experience Britain’s greatest Roman monument (and a
whole lot besides) in a single exciting break. And there’s so
much more to Hadrian’s Wall Country than the Wall itself.
This guide will help you plan your own (peaceful!) invasion.
Changing political, social, economic and demographic
forces in the Roman Empire from the 1st to 5th centuries
AD led to the creation of this furthermost imperial frontier.
Today you can immerse yourself in its dynamic story and the
vital role it plays as part of the Frontiers of the Roman
Empire World Heritage Site – the largest of its kind in the
world and stretching across Europe to include the Antonine
Wall in Scotland and The Limes in Germany.
Hadrian’s Wall Country boasts spectacular coastline,
stunning rolling countryside, vibrant cities and towns,
charming villages and a wealth of Roman forts, museums
and visitor attractions. Whether you’re looking to relax or
want to bring your bicycles and walking boots, you’ll never
be stuck for inspiration.
By splitting this guide into three geographical sections we’ll
show you clearly how to plan your trip and to follow in the
footsteps of Emperor Hadrian himself. Read it in
conjunction with our Hadrian’s Wall Country map and
our packed website visithadrianswall.co.uk and you’ll get
the whole picture - an overwall view!
Exploring on
foot and bike
Hadrian’s Wall is an ancient
monument. So it needs TLC and
you can do your bit please, by…
CODE
• Not walking on the
Wall itself
• Take your litter home
• Follow signposted paths
• Walk side by side
• Keep gates closed
• Control your dog
• Use public transport
• Support local businesses
• Consider circular walks
and Roman site visits
instead of the Trail
• Avoid worn patches
on the Trail
Thank you. Every little bit helps
Hadrian’s Wall Country is
perfect for walkers and cyclists
alike. No sandals and chariots
required!
Walk the Wall
Experience the full scale and majesty of the Roman monument
by walking Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail, voted the
country’s favourite. 2013 sees the Trail celebrate its 10th
anniversary too. The Trail is best walked during the summer, so
the grass path has had a chance to grow. Hadrian’s Wall Path
National Trail is unique. You are walking on sensitive
archaeology, so please do your bit and follow the Code.
Pedal the Wall
If two wheels are more your thing, then Hadrian’s Wall
Country is for you. Try the challenge of Hadrian’s Cycleway,
following the World Heritage Site along the Wall and down
the Cumbrian coast. Or perhaps you’d prefer quiet do-in-aday
rides, along country lanes, cyclepaths and bridleways.
Go to visithadrianswall.co.uk for suggestions of walks
and cycle rides.
And don’t forget there are plenty of shorter circular and linear
routes, in both town and country, suitable for all abilities.
Food and drink fit
Those Romans certainly loved
their food and drink. And
things haven’t changed a bit
today in Hadrian’s Wall
Country. Come and dig in.
No need to march on an empty stomach in Hadrian’s Wall
Country when there’s so many fabulous places to eat, and
such plentiful local culinary delights to experience.
There can be few parts of the country that boast so many
thriving local food producers. Wherever you find yourself
there’s always a tempting treat waiting in a café, pub, bakery,
deli, market or farmshop - from marvelous microbreweries to
artisan breads, from heritage meats to….well, even Roman
ice creams!
Unmissable eateries include Britain’s oldest dining room at
Blackfriars in Newcastle, a former Dominican friary serving
food since 1239, as well as the North Shields Fish Quay for
some of the country’s best fish and chips. As the National
Trail passes through Tyneside, there are several fine pubs,
including The Central, a popular pit stop with walkers, as
well as plenty of good old countryside pubs, like the Red Lion
near Hexham. Bustling Carlisle has lots of great places to eat
and drink, but make sure you check out the restaurant
hidden inside Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery - perfect for
a mid-visit pick-me-up.
In the Tyne Valley, just a short spin from the Wall, The
Feathers (in Hedley on the Hill) and The Battlesteads (in
Wark), are two recent Great British Pub Winners. If you love
great pub food washed down with something tasty then
both these ‘locals’ are essential visits.
So whether you’re sipping a fabulous cuppa or gulping a
delicious local ale; dressing up for some fine dining or just
fancy a light bite on the go, Hadrian’s Wall Country will
delight every appetite.
Cycling, walking, site-seeing,
fabulous accommodation -
it’s all here in Hadrian’s Wall
someone else to do all the
Appoint your own foot soldiers
For some, part of the fun of taking a break is the organising,
both before and during the break. And with so much to see
and do in Hadrian’s Wall Country there’s always plenty to
plan. But some people just want someone else to do it all,
leaving them free to enjoy their travels. Accommodation
booking companies and tour operators offer excellent
service, great value for money and reduce the need for you
to stress over the detail.
From bikes to baggage
Biking, hiking or touring, there’s a company to help you get
the best out of Hadrian’s Wall Country. Hadrian’s Wall Path
National Trail and its network of shorter walks and circular
trails, takes you in the sandal steps of the Romans, from
Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway. It hugs the Wall for much
of its route and showcases some of England’s most dramatic
vistas. Hadrian’s Cycleway runs from Ravenglass to
Tynemouth, meandering along quiet roads and tracks with
no sense of time’s winged chariot at your shoulder. Don’t
want to bring your own bike? Then simply hire one in
Newcastle, right on the Cycleway.
Your guide to the Guides
If you prefer the guided option, then that’s no problem.
Friendly Hadrian’s Wall Country Volunteers bring any visit to
life throughout the year. And other coach tours and guided
walking and touring companies are available, too. The key to
all of this – leave enough time for exploring the attractions
along the way (Roman and otherwise), after all they have
been almost 2,000 years in the making.
Quality Gradings
how to understand them
As you may imagine, there’s a wide range of accommodation
available in Hadrian’s Wall Country. Location, facilities, type of
property and budget will all influence your choices. Faced
with so many options, it can be comforting to know that
expert help is at hand in terms of assessing accommodation.
Follow the sign
Looking out for either the Enjoy England
& Quality Rose symbol or the AA logo is
key. It’s proof that the accommodation has been
independently assessed for the official national quality
assessment scheme by experienced professional inspectors.
You may on occasions see the Quality Cumbria logo,
an assessment initiative run locally but in partnership with
VisitEngland.
What’s assessed and how?
There’s an official Quality Rose and AA assessment scheme to
cover every type of accommodation from self-catering to farm
stays and hostels. Every scheme uses a straightforward 1-5
star rating to give you a reliable guide as to what to expect:
★ Simple, practical, no frills.
★★ Well presented and well run.
★★★ Good level of quality and comfort.
★★★★ Excellent standard throughout.
★★★★★ Exceptional with a degree of luxury.
Hotels
To be assessed under the Hotel scheme, hotels have to be
licensed, with all rooms ensuite (or with private bathroom)
and offer dinner at least 5 nights a week. It goes without
saying, but you will find enhanced services with higher rated
properties.
Guest accommodation
Guest accommodation properties are likely to be smaller
than hotels with perhaps more of a family feel and
approach. The different categories are: Inns, Restaurants
with Rooms, Bed and Breakfast, Farmhouses, Guest Houses
and Guest Accommodation.
Self catering
For self catering accommodation, the layout and design of
the accommodation and the range and quality of the
kitchen equipment are assessed, as well as the quality and
comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and, most
importantly, the cleanliness.
Hostels
Star rated accommodation often in shared rooms with
bunk beds. Family rooms may also be available. Hostels
normally welcome individuals, families and groups.
Bunkhouses
Rural accommodation, which can be booked by groups or
individuals. Services and facilities may be limited, but will
include a self catering facility.
Camping barns
These provide very simple accommodation in a rural setting.
Visitors should normally expect to bring their own sleeping
bags and cooking equipment.
Holiday, touring and camping parks
Enjoy England awards star ratings reflecting the overall
quality of the park from one to five stars- five stars being
reserved for parks of exceptional quality. The AA awards
pennants rather than stars.
Welcome to Excellence symbol
Businesses with this award aim to exceed visitor needs
and expectations and provide an environment where
courtesy, helpfulness and a warm welcome are
standard.
Walkers Welcome and Cyclists Welcome
Accommodation that meets the particular needs of
walkers and cyclists participate in these schemes.
Families Welcome scheme
This scheme gives families the confidence that they are
booking accommodation that meets their particular
needs. Simple criteria have been developed to indicate
the extra facilities and service that can make a family
holiday even more enjoyable.
Welcome Pets
Properties in this scheme have taken extra effort to
ensure a pleasurable stay for both pet and owner.
28
29
30
Breakfast Award
This award recognises those hotels and guest
accommodation businesses which have gone the extra mile
to ensure the breakfast will exceed your expectations.
Awaiting Inspection
At the time of going to press, accommodation displaying
Awaiting Inspection has applied for participation in one
of the above assessment schemes. Please check with the
business directly to ascertain what grading they
have achieved.
Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS)
GTBS recognises places to stay and visit that are taking
action to support the local area and the wider environment.
It is Europe’s largest and most successful ‘green’
accreditation scheme for tourism.
VisitEngland Gold & Silver Awards
VisitEngland give further accolades to hotels and guest
accommodation that not only achieve their overall rating
but also provide exceptional quality throughout, especially
in service and hospitality.
AA Red Stars
The AA gives red stars to select hotels in each star
grading. These have been awarded ‘Inspectors’
Choice’ status
National Accessible Scheme
From cultural city life to
countryside serenity the
easterly frontier of Hadrian’s
Wall Country deliver the best
of both possible worlds - and
delivers it in style.
You can have your cake and eat it. Especially in
immeasurably varied Hadrian’s Wall Country’s east.
You can be city-based and soak up the immense cultural
vitality, shopping and nightlife of NewcastleGateshead.
You can explore stunning seaside vistas along an unspoiled
coastline. Or you can roam free in rolling countryside and
quaint villages. And, of course, there are iconic ‘must-sees’
such as The Angel of the North, BALTIC, the Great North
Museum and NewcastleGateshead Quayside and bridges.
Near the lovely market town of Corbridge you can visit
Vallum Farm and sample one of their delicious home made
ice creams. Bustling Hexham is dominated by the medieval
Abbey (built using stone from the Wall) and the Old Gaol,
depicting the Border Reivers Story.
There’s all this and the Wall itself, of course. Don’t miss
the reconstructions at the supply fort of Arbeia at South
Shields or the extensive excavations of Segedunum
at Wallsend. And Hadrian’s Cycleway starts on the coast
with the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail also beginning
in Wallsend.
The Spectacular Frontier:
Hexham to Brampton
Hotbank Crags © Roger Clegg
Discover an unparalleled
treasure trove of spectacular
landscape, unmissable visitor
attractions and Imperial
magnificence.
The central region of Hadrian’s Wall Country is not to be
missed. Not only delivering some of the most inspiring Roman
remains, but offering a wealth of other essential things to do
and see. From the sheer serenity of the Northumberland
National Park, one of the quietest national parks in the
country, to unbeatable family-fun attractions such as Walby
Farm Park near Carlisle. Explore the many fabulous trails at
Kielder Water and Forest Park. And there’s the UK’s first
UNESCO Geopark – the North Pennines Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty.
On the Roman trail you’re spoilt for choice. The Calvary fort
at Chesters has a well preserved Wall and Bath House and
there are the remarkable ruins of the temple of Mithras at
Carrawburgh. Housesteads Roman Fort’s magnificent ruins
shouldn’t be missed especially with its new visitor centre set
to open in 2013. At Roman Vindolanda there are amazing
reconstructions and ongoing archaeology, plus tremendous
treasures showcased at Carvoran’s Roman Army Museum.
From Greenhead, there’s an impressive section of Wall
snaking along Walltown Crags, yielding panoramic views.
Birdoswald, with its inspiring visitor centre, original turf
Wall, later stone Wall and well preserved defences, gives
unmatched insight into the Roman world.
Section Three
The Cumbrian Coast:
Brampton to Ravenglass
Burgh by Sands © Roger Clegg
City life, wildlife, sealife, Roman
life - it’s all here in the West as
Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage
Site takes in the stunning
Cumbrian coastline.
Be sure to visit Lanercost Priory, a beautiful 13th century
church with its brand new visitor centre and excellent tea
room. Then, by contrast, head to thriving Carlisle with its
great shopping, art, culture, medieval Cathedral and Castle.
Here Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery’s multi million
pound Roman Frontier Gallery tells the story of the 400 year
period of Roman occupation like nowhere else. Walkers and
cyclists can enjoy Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail and
cycleway as it traverses the city.
There’s the breathtaking Solway Firth, an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty renowned for its birdlife and
nature based tourism. The beautiful harbour town of
Maryport is the perfect base for exploring Senhouse
Roman Museum and a wonderful aquarium. Georgian
Whitehaven is the starting point for the C2C (coast to coast)
cycleway and ideally placed for Hardknott Fort with its
fabulous views. St Bees offers a lovely beach, rockpools and
clifftop strolls. In Ravenglass there’s the country’s tallest
Bath House remains and also 13th Century Muncaster with
its Himalayan Gardens and World Owl Centre, as well as the
Victorian Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway that will transport
you to the foothills of England’s highest peak.
Friends of
Hadrian’s Wall
Cawfields Crags © Roger Clegg
The older you get, the more
you need looking after. So you
can imagine how much looking
after Hadrian’s Wall takes.
At nearly 2,000 years of age, this UNESCO World Heritage Site
needs some TLC.
The charity Hadrian’s Wall Trust is committed to the
management of the World Heritage Site.
We look after the Wall’s conservation and preservation,
communicate what it means to be a World Heritage Site, for
both locals and visitors, and encourage understanding of and
appreciation for the Wall, its Roman heritage all along, and its
context in a world of modern frontiers.
All this takes some doing, and HWT do get excellent support
from English Heritage, Natural England and many other
partners. But there’s always more to do.
This is where you can help.
By becoming a Friend of Hadrian’s Wall, your donations will
collectively go to ensuring enjoyment for all of Hadrian’s Wall
for centuries to come. Repairs to the Wall, management of
the Trail, checking for problems, improving accessibility,
finding volunteers, the list goes on.
With your help, we can do this and more.
Alternatively you can give on the go, just by texting Wall22
with your £ donation (eg Wall22 £10). Every little bit helps!
Go to visithadrianswall.co.uk/friends to find out how
you can do your bit.
Thank you.
