INPUT-OUTPUT Sheet: (a) Input: Sign Parameters Input each parameter. Press "Enter" after inserting each sign parameter. Basic Wind Speed for Location (mph): Should be the appropriate 3-second gust wind speed selected in accordance with Section 3.8.2 and Figure 3-2 of the AASHTO Specifications. Valid 3-second gust Basic Wind Speed values are in the range 85-160 mph. Structure Design Life (10, 25, 50, or 100 years): Should be selected in accordance with Section 3.8.3 and Table 3-3 of the AASHTO Specification. Note that AASHTO recommends 10 years for typical roadside sign structures. However, Transpo Industries, Inc. recommends 25 years for Break-Safe® sign structures, based on actual service life of the system observed at field installations. Yield Stress for Steel I-Beam Post (psi): Typically 36,000 psi (ASTM A36) or 50,000 psi (ASTM A572, Grade 50) for standard steel I-beam shapes, dimensioned in accordance with ASTM A6. Width of Sign Panel (ft): Measured horizontally from left edge to right edge of sign panel. May include fractions of a foot, for example "6.25" ft. Height of Sign Panel (ft): Measured vertically from top edge to bottom edge of sign panel. May include fractions of a foot, for example "10.375" ft. Maximum Under Sign Clearance (ft): Measured vertically from the bottom edge of the sign panel to the ground at the location of the longest post. May include fractions of a foot, for example "12.75" ft. Note that multiple-post breakaway signs must have an under sign clearance of at least 7.0 ft, in accordance with Section 12.5.3 of the AASHTO Specifications. Number of Posts (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5): Must be an integer. The program assumes that all posts in the sign structure are the same size, type and material. Clear Distance Between Adjacent Posts (ft): Measured horizontally from inside edge of one post to inside edge of the adjacent post. May include fractions of a foot, for example "7.25" ft. This distance is zero (0) for single-post signs. For multiple-post signs, the program assume that all posts are evenly spaced i.e. both distances between adjacent posts in a 3-post sign are equal. In accordance with Section 12.5.3 of the AASHTO Specifications, larger post sizes are permitted when the Clear Distance Between Adjacent Posts is 7.0 ft. or greater. (b) OUTPUT: Break-Safe® Sign Design Data Using the Input Parameters, the program analyzes all structural and breakaway performance requirements of the entered sign configuration, in accordance with the AASHTO Specifications.
