Elyn R. Saks<br />

Elyn Saks, Orrin B. Evans Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />

and Ps yc h i a t ry and the Behavioral Sciences,<br />

re c e i ved a two-year grant from the Gre e n w a l l<br />

Foundation to study capacity to decide on<br />

p s ychiatric re s e a rch in collaboration with<br />

re s e a rchers at the Un i versity <strong>of</strong> <strong>California</strong>–Sa n<br />

Di e g o. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Saks also re c e i ved funding<br />

f rom the American Ps yc h o a n a l y t i c<br />

Foundation to serve as principal inve s t i g a t o r<br />

on a training grant from the Committee on<br />

Re s e a rch and Special Training (CORST) to<br />

study informed consent to psyc h o a n a l y s i s .<br />

She also is consulting on a National In s t i t u t e<br />

on Mental Health grant to study another facet<br />

<strong>of</strong> capacity to decide on tre a t m e n t .<br />

Robert M. Saltzman<br />

Ro b e rt Saltzman presented “How Di versity in<br />

the Classroom Im p roves Legal Ed u c a t i o n” at<br />

a <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> Admission Council confere n c e<br />

in Philadelphia. He also led panel discussions<br />

on law school admissions for several large<br />

g roups <strong>of</strong> minority law school applicants in<br />

New Yo rk City and Chicago and presented a<br />

re p o rt on incidents <strong>of</strong> misconduct in the law<br />

school admission process to the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

Admission Council in Seattle. Dean Sa l t z m a n<br />

is chair <strong>of</strong> the LSAC committee on misconduct<br />

and irregularities in the admission<br />

p rocess. In addition, Dean Saltzman made<br />

s e veral presentations at the Pre-<strong>Law</strong> Ad v i s e r s’<br />

National Council conference in San Di e g o ,<br />

w h e re he discussed the importance <strong>of</strong> dive r s i t y<br />

in the law school classroom, disabilities issues<br />

in law school admissions and ethical issues<br />

facing law students and law school applicants.<br />

M i chael H. Shapiro<br />

Michael Sh a p i ro, Do rothy W. Ne l s o n<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong>, was on sabbatical in<br />

Tennessee during fall semester, working on<br />

the second edition <strong>of</strong> his Bioethics and <strong>Law</strong><br />

casebook and on an article on constitutional<br />

s t a n d a rds <strong>of</strong> re v i ew. He participated in a<br />

seminar on behavioral genetics at Va n d e r b i l t<br />

Un i versity and spoke about the re l a t i o n s h i p<br />

b e t ween political philosophy and constitutional<br />

interpretation to the Orange County<br />

chapter <strong>of</strong> Me n s a .<br />

Dan Simon<br />

Dan Simon was awarded two thre e - ye a r<br />

re s e a rch grants totaling more than $400,000<br />

f rom the National Science Foundation to<br />

study the application <strong>of</strong> cognitive models to<br />

legal reasoning. The projects are being<br />

conducted in collaboration with Stephen J.<br />

Read, a psychology pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>USC</strong>, and<br />

Keith J. Ho l yoak, a psychology pr<strong>of</strong>essor at<br />

U C LA. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Simon and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Re a d<br />

p resented recent re s e a rch at a workshop spons<br />

o red by <strong>USC</strong>’s Center on <strong>Law</strong>, Ec o n o m i c s<br />

and Organization in Ju l y. The pre s e n t a t i o n ,<br />

“ Integration <strong>of</strong> Evidence by Constraint<br />

Satisfaction,” described an experiment with<br />

mock jurors that examines how people<br />

p rocess and evaluate large sets <strong>of</strong> complex,<br />

ambiguous and conflicting information. In<br />

addition, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Simon presented “Ma k i n g<br />

Mu l t i - Attribute Decisions By Constraint<br />

Satisfaction,” co-written by Pro f e s s o r<br />
