Spiritual Thoughts A guy fell in a hole and he couldn’t climb out. He heard someone walk by and shouted for help. "Send me down a rope." The guy that walked by said "I am a doctor, I don’t have a rope. I will give you want I have." So he threw down a prescription. The guy in the hole said, “What good is a prescription? How is this going to get me out of the hole? Another guy walked by and he again shouted for help. The guy above looked down the hole and said, "I don’t have a rope; I am a banker." So he threw him down a business card and said, "I can give you free checking at my bank." The man in the hole wondered how free checking was going to get him out of the hole. Someone else walked by and threw him down a ten-dollar bill. But he was still stuck in the hole. Finally, a friend walked by. The man in the hole said, “Am I glad to see you.” His friend said, "I don’t have a rope." Then he jumped into the hole. The guy in the hole said, "What did you do that for? Now we are both stuck down here." The friend said calmly, “I’ve been down here before. I know the way out.” It says that the disciples rejoiced when they saw the risen Lord. Jesus said to them "Peace be with you." That is what He said. What they heard was “I’ve been in the tomb, and I know the way out." On the day of my funeral, my body will be lowered into the grave. On that day, there will be a few gathered at my grave (I hope). Maybe a few of my brothers, a few priests perhaps even a bishop. There will be members on my community of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. There will be some of those who were in the church. Some will have a few nice words in the eulogy, some will offer a prayer and some will even place a flower on my grave. But only one person will come to my grave and be able to say: "I have been here before, I know the way out." I want to make sure that the one person who can say that will be my friend before I enter the tomb. Just after I was ordained a deacon, I was sent to New Jersey. I was scheduled to read the gospel and preach at the Mass although I never knew for sure who was going to the main celebrant. As I was vesting, a retired bishop strolled in. Of course, I deferred the preaching to him but he said he wanted me to have the honors. It was during the Easter season and I talked about how Jesus saved us through His death and resurrection. After the Mass, we walked the quarter of a mile up the hill to the rectory. On the way, the bishop told me he liked my homily. He asked me if anyone ever saved my life. I told him, "No." He said, “After I was ordained I was sent to China. Shortly after, I was arrested for being a priest. One day the prison guard brought two of us out to a field. I thought they wanted us to work but when they told us to kneel I knew they were going to execute us. My fellow prisoner protested to the guards. Because he protested, he lost is life. The reason he protested was to save mine.” He then said to me, “Let me tell you what it is like to be saved. When I go to bed at night I can see that prisoner's face because it is indelibly printed on my memory. When I wake up in the morning, I am never angry; I am never hold a grudge; I never need anything and I am in a state of perpetual happiness because ever since I walked across the field that day, I am blessed to be alive. Every day is a bonus and a gift. That is what it is like to be saved.” I wanted to tell you that because you said, "Jesus saved us by His death and resurrection."
