BASSALEG OLYMPICS
“Inspiring a Generation” – Bassaleg Olympic Week
After a year’s worth of planning and preparation, Bassaleg Olympic Society proudly ignited the
opening ceremony of our very own Olympic Games by welcoming the entire school to NIAC stadium on
19 July to mark the climax of our truly spectacular “Olympic week.” The week had consisted of curricular
areas working together to produce olympic themed outcomes designed to educate and inspire students for
the London Games. Year 10 pupils worked alongside staff representatives to design workshops for all
pupils, with sixth form students acting as Olympic ambassadors supporting both pupils and staff in their
roles.
The history and geography
departments explored the
evolution of the Olympiad with
pupils tasked with the creation of
collages to symbolically represent
periods of change.
Art and English actively engaged
pupils in marketing campaigns
where they had to design various
logos for the different Olympic
and Paralympic events,
accompanied by emotive and
persuasive language.
The RS staff found themselves
fully dressed as Greek Gods and
paraded through the classrooms
in role, regaling stories of ancient
Greece, as pupils engaged in a
variety of problem solving
activities.
Creativity and innovation was in
abundance in the Design and
Technology block as pupils
designed flags, signs,
torches and medals for
their respective countries.
The Science and Social Science
departments certainly put all pupils
through their paces with a number
of fitness tests where they had to
calculate predictions and analyse
outcomes of their efforts.
Similarly, pupils were physically and
mentally challenged by the Maths
and PE departments. Following
practical games of Welsh baseball,
pupils calculated their own batting
and bowling averages before
engaging themselves in a group
study of Usain Bolt’s sprint,
calculating his speed during the
different intervals of the race.
