Jaak De Koninck
I would like to present the artwork of my friend
Jaak De Koninck. I have got to know Jaak better
in the past 15 years and have seen him evolve
into the respected and renowned artist he is
today.
Jaak De Koninck is first and foremost a humble
person who would rather express himself through
his paintbrush. So you won’t hear him give
pseudo-intellectual lectures on art, nor are you
likely to see him on a popular talk show. Is it
this modesty that compelled him to focus on
miniature art for such a long time? His stamps
are only a few square centimetres large, yet Jaak
managed to offer us a glimpse into his imaginary
world, his ‘STARBROOK Airlines’ world.
In this work, he not only demonstrates his talent
as a miniaturist, linked to the tradition of Flemish
miniature art, but also proves that he is absolutely
passionate about calligraphy. In his later work, he
continues to use calligraphy and stamps with the
result that every painting by Jaak becomes a
genuine ‘De Koninck’, stamped to share with the
outside world.
Jaak is undoubtedly one of today’s most
accomplished watercolour artists. He has mastered
this extremely difficult technique, which requires
great concentration and a steady hand, like no
other. Watercolour is also the ideal medium to
render the nostalgic atmosphere and the poetic
environment that characterise Jaak’s world.
Jaak De Koninck
vandaag is.
vereist. Aquarel is een ideale techniek om de
nostalgische sfeer en de poëtische leefwereld van
Jaak weer te geven.
5

T h e a r t i s t
In Jaak’s subsequent work one can distinguish
two important changes: 1. from small to large
(to very large even – just remember his 12m²
canvases at the Zaventem Airport) and 2. the
use of different techniques such as oil on canvas
and, more recently, marouflage.
You will find here a selection of these three
techniques. It’s amazing how Jaak has managed to
transfer the characteristic, intimate atmosphere
of his miniature watercolours onto large oil
canvases. And here too he reveals himself as a
true artist who moves us and takes us by the hand
into his wonderful, boyish world of planes, ships,
cars and their respective hangars, shipyards and
garages… sometimes, but not always, populated
with beautiful, inaccessible women.
Through his own personal style, Jaak De Koninck
has claimed a place among our figurative arts.
And although no artist likes to be compared
to another artist, there are several elements in
his work that remind us of artists such as Paul
Delvaux and Edgar Hopper. I do hope Jaak won’t
mind my comparing him to them, for this actually
explains – at least in part – the national and
international recognition of his work – work which
has meanwhile found its way into major private
collections.
Over the past ten-odd years, Jaak has also
been drawing and designing the packaging for
an exclusive chocolate brand which is being sold
world-wide under the name ‘STARBROOK Airlines’.
This means Jaak is also the most copied living
artist. A portrait of Jaak De Koninck would
however be incomplete without a mention of his
wife and lifelong partner, Heidi De Bie. They work
together in true symbiosis, inspire each other and
carry on developing STARBROOK Airlines together,
both on an artistic and a business level. Jaak’s
dream world has become real!
Edwin Hoet, friend of Jaak’s
plek verworven binnen onze figuratieve kunst. En
hoewel een kunstenaar nooit graag vergeleken
wordt met andere kunstenaars, doen verschillende
elementen van zijn werk denken aan kunstenaars
als Paul Delvaux en Edgar Hopper. Hopelijk neemt
Jan-Baptist De Koninck – Leuven – 20 March
The “Expo ’58” is a dream world for young Jaak. Passionate about all things flying, his
fascination with aviation grows as he’s lying on the grass next to the runway.
School years
Military service with the Belgian Navy?!
Brussels, first job as a Technical Engineer… Evening classes in watercolour and Sunday
school. Jaak’s imaginary airline company “STARBROOK Airlines” materialises.
First exhibition at the Beursschouwburg in Brussels.
Jaak becomes a full-time artist, creates his own PLC and bids his farewell to Brussels.
Leuven becomes his new home base. In addition to painting, he also designs his own
furniture line inspired by airplane shapes.
Jaak meets Patrick Gilis, an entrepreneur in search of a new corporate image for a
chocolate brand. The chocolate brand “STARBROOK Airlines BELGIAN CHOCOLATES”, the
result of their collaboration, provides Jaak with an international forum.
Watercolour, oil and marouflage are the three main techniques Jaak uses to develop his
dream world. Postage stamps have increased in size and the chocolate wrappings are
spreading throughout the world.
The end of World War I.
Jan-Baptist De Koninck, organ builder and player, is a soldier on the IJzer river. He accompanies
local fishermen at sea and in exchange for fish, entertains the men on board playing his organ.
After the ship capsizes, Jan Baptist is saved by Irish fishermen and is taken to Portsmouth. The
castaway suffers serious injuries to his left hand. He is then transferred to a convent. Stephany,
a young nurse, takes care of Jan-Baptist and captures his heart. Both emigrate to America.
Charles L., seriously wounded after a plane crash, is saved by Stephany’s healing hands.
As a token of gratitude, Charles L. flies both of them to Santa Barbara. Jan-Baptist translates
his name into French, Le Roi. The Americans turn it into “Learoy”.
Stephany gives birth to twins, Emile and Jack. Unfortunately, the young mother dies two days
after the birth.
Jan-Baptist buys an old plane, a Curtiss Jenny, and starts flying on assignment for the US
Airmail Services. In his free time, he works on his invention, the first electric music machine -
the jukebox. He patents his invention. The twins grow up and learn to fly at a very young age.
They dream of starting their own airline - STARBROOK Airlines.
After an unfortunate encounter with a bull upon landing, Jan-Baptist dies of wounds to his lower
abdomen. Emile and Jack inherit the old biplane and the patent to the jukebox.
DEC (Detroit Electric Company) shows great interest and buys the patent. With this money, the
boys buy an old DC3 (C47 military transport). After adjustments to the interior, the twins are
asked to fly for TWA and Pan Am.
Emile and Jack visit the World Expo in Brussels. In order to earn some money, they offer public
helicopter tours above Brussels and surroundings. An Algerian businessman hires them both for
a suspicious flight to Algeria. Due to technical problems, they crash in the Sahara. Emile dies
immediately. Jack survives and is cared for by a Berber.
Jack returns to Santa Barbara and restarts the activities of STARBROOK Airlines. STARBROOK
Airlines takes to the skies once again.
