The Bible Speaks by Pastor Julian P. Harris
Jesus’ Kingdom-parable of the wheat and the weeds is relevant to many aspects of life from
parenng to pastoring, from the small scale of the individual to the large scale of the Church in the
modern world. How does one engender the good and cull the bad when you must ferlize both? He
makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (Ma
5:45) What must we do when we cannot discern the dierence between the good and the evil that
masquerades as the good or—as is more problemac in our society—when you don’t care to make
any disncon between the two: Whitewashing bad people and throwing mud on good people are
equally abhorrent to God. (Prov 17:15)
Rural life in the agrarian South is all about weeds. Weeds in the pea-patch, suckers on the
tomatoes, cockle burrs in the coon eld and milkweed in the tobacco rows. A cockle burr had
shallow but widespread roots and had to be pulled out to get all the roots. If you hacked it o at
the ground level with a hoe it would be back in a week. A milkweed had a very long tap root that
could not be pulled out. If you did try to pull it up, three separate sprouts would be back in a week.
Milkweeds had to be hacked o with a hoe and would bleed and die as the sap ran out. If you didn’t
handle the weeds right, hours of backbreaking work in the sun would be completely wasted.
Jesus knew his weeds as well. The meaning of Jesus’ parable about the wheat and the weeds
becomes clearer when we look at the specic kind of weed he talks about. Tares are bearded darnel
(zizania), a poisonous weed organically related to wheat and dicult to disnguish from wheat in the
early stages of its growth. The weeds had grown enough that their roots were already intertwined
with those of the wheat but not far enough that it would be easy to disnguish them from the wheat;
uproong thus might endanger the wheat. It looks like wheat, it grows like wheat but it is not wheat.
The problem with taking our hoe to the evil weeds of the world is that good and evil somemes look
so much alike. It only becomes clear later: While you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the
wheat with them. Let both grow together unl the harvest. At that me I will tell the harvesters:
First collect the weeds and e them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it
into my barn. (Ma 13:29-30) It fools you!
A crusty old Southerner ran a fruit stand on the outskirts of Sumter on Highway 15 South. An
out-of-town customer stopped to buy oranges. Old Jim saw the New York tag on that converble
Cadillac-car and seizing the chance to strike a blow for the Cause, sold him a sack of citrons. Jim kept
one sweet orange peeled for just such an opportunity and oered it as a sample and a gi for the

customer. Citrons look like oranges, but the pulp is very dry containing only lile insipid
juice. Moreover, the main content of a citron is the thick white rind which adheres to the slices
and cannot be separated from them easily. By the me that the New Yorker took that rst lusty
bite it was too late; he had a mouthful of bier gall and a sack of…well, citrons. The weeds, like
the citrons, did not just happen as if by accident but were part of a premeditated plan to
inict the maximum damage on the innocent. Yes, New-Yorkers are innocent, too!
Let’s keep in mind a fundamental biblical principle: There is a me for everything, and a
season for every acvity under heaven...a me to plant and a me to uproot. (Ecc 3:1-2) God
tells us there comes a me, but He does not tell us when that me has come. God permits good
and evil to co-exist alongside each other and within a single individual out of His absolute respect
for the human person’s free will to choose Him or reject Him.
God allows us to be children unl it is me for us to grow up: When I was a child, I spoke
as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away
childish things. (1 Cor 13:11) The queson remains: Do we have the wisdom to make a nal
judgment about that me for anyone but ourselves. When will all that is hidden be revealed?
We should never be so quick to meet out nal judgments when we cannot see the end of
all things: Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treang
the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do
right? (Gen 18:25) How can we claim to know the heart of another when a shadow lives in each
soul including our own? The shadow gets lled with all the things that we bury because we don’t
want to know them. It is the garbage can of the soul where we try to toss out our unexamined
greed, narcissisc selshness and all the other seven deadly sins of which we can never seem to rid
ourselves. Hidden, this garbage rots and pollutes and unconsciously drives our acons. We think
we have rid ourselves of our trash, yet it controls us behind the scenes. Perhaps we should go
green and recycle our trash. By acknowledging our garbage and knowing it is always there, we are
beer able to understand ourselves, to grow and to act with true compassion towards ourselves
and others. The more we learn to recycle and compost, the less our trash is such a big problem.
Examining our shadow is healthier than trying to pitch our sins into the hey bag. Perhaps the
idea of recycling trash is a modern translaon of wheat and tares. Whether we are talking about
weeds or garbage, it is a cauon that our quest for purity can lead to wrong ends when we ignore
of what rests within our own souls.
God righully, mercifully reserves judgment to Himself: Counsel and sound judgment are
mine; I have understanding and power. (Prov 8:14) God alone has the wisdom to exercise the
power of judgment without collateral damage to the innocent: Every plant which My heavenly
Father has not planted will be uprooted. (Ma 15:13) When we mortals try to do right we face
the challenges of moral shortcuts and the press of me against our brief life spans that seem
to lead us closer towards our goal, yet even our deeds that wear our Sunday best can have
unintended tragic consequences: Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this g tree
and nd none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him,
‘Sir, let it alone this year also, unl I dig around it and ferlize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if
not, aer that you can cut it down.’ (Lk 13:7-9)

Construcon has begun on replacing the worn red carpets with
Traverne throughout the main Church.
The carpets are 22 years old, faded and stained and forming rolls
which have become a hazard to our parishioners and guests.
The beauful, light Traverne will be applied throughout the main oor. Commercial
grade Carpeng will replace the carpets in the two stairwells and in the balcony. Laminate
Wood Flooring will ll the small spaces, hallway by the new restrooms and the Family,
Eucharisc Ministers, Lectors, Ushers and Servers Rooms.
The Pews and Kneelers will be removed, refurbished and reupholstered throughout the
Church. Round Mosaics made in Italy will adorn the Main Entrance and Main Isle up to the
Alter of Sacrice.
DAILY MASS AT ST. THOMAS MORE PARISH WILL BE HELD IN THE
PARISH CENTER DURING CONSTRUCTION:
6:30 AM, 8:30 AM & 5:30 PM.

SAINT PEREGRINE—THE CANCER SAINT
Cancer is the scourge of modern society. Despite the enormous commitment of
treasure and genius to research, the cure eludes us. All of us are moved to tears by
the faces of the young at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis; yet, their suering
along with that of many brave souls in clinical trials across our Naon has purchased
for us new and innovave treatments that oer hope.
All too oen families arrive at the place of heartbreak where mortals fail no maer
how heroic the eort. There we meet God the Healer and His champion, St. Peregrine
the Patron Saint of Cancer Vicms and Survivors.
Fr. Alex Vargas has long wished to establish on STM campus a
MEDITATION GARDEN OF ST. PEREGRINE.
Father envisions a peaceful place in the storm of this disease where we can light
candles and seek the intercession of the Saint for ourselves or for our stricken loved
ones. It would also be a place of memory, to honor those who fought the good ght
but are now free of cancer with God and His angels.
Soon Father Vargas will commission a statue of St. Peregrine and design the Garden of
Meditaon in such a manner that we can memorialize those who inspire us by their
courage and dignity of surviving and dying with cancer.

khoâng thaáy bình an vôùi thöïc teá naøy, caùc baïn vaø toâi ñang theo
ñuoåi moät söï hoaøn thieän theo maãu möïc thieâng lieâng kieåu thôøi
trang, chöù khoâng phaûi laø ‘hoaøn thieän nhö Cha caùc con treân trôøi.’
Khoâng ai trong chuùng ta laø Chuùa vaø laø Ñaáng Cöùu Ñoä,
aáy vaäy maø vaãn coù nhieàu ngöôøi muoán nhoå coû luøng tröôùc thôøi haïn,
chæ vì hoï thieáu kieân nhaãn, böïc boäi vôùi thöïc teá vaø gaây toån thöông
cho caây luùa khoâng ñöôïc may maén. Lyù töôûng hoaøn thieän kieåu
naøy khieán con ngöôøi ta muø loøa maø nhoå luoân caû coû luøng laãn luùa
thôm. Caùc baïn vaø toâi ñöôïc Ñaáng Taïo Hoùa môøi goïi nhaän ra veû
ñeïp cuûa söï baát toaøn (The beauty of imperfection) voán coù maët
trong baát cöù moät thuï sinh naøo. Ñaây laø ‘caùi duyeân’ trôøi cho;
ñöøng ñeå loái ñaïo ñöùc kieåu thaåm myõ vieän ñuïng tôùi. Haõy ñeå baøn
tay cuûa Ñaáng Taïo Hoùa vaø cuõng laø baøn tay cuûa Ñaáng Cöùu Ñoä
ñieàu chænh vaø hoaøn taát khi muøa gaët cuûa Nöôùc Trôøi ñeán.

Nhaø nguyeän lôùn ñang ñöôïc ñaïi tu boå, thaùnh leã seõ
ñöôïc cöû haønh taïi hoäi tröôøng. Vieäc tu boå bao goàm
vieäc laùt gaïch boùng neàn nhaø nguyeän, thay thaûm caàu
thang, laùt goã nhöõng khuoân vieân nhoû vaø caùc phoøng
thöøa taùc vieân, gheá daøi vaø baøn quì seõ ñöôïc taùi taïo
vaø nhöõng trang söùc phuïng myõ cuûa ñeàn thôø.
Giaùo xöù ñoùn nhaän moïi hình thöùc daâng cuùng cho
vieäc tu boå naøy. Ñaëc bieät cho nhöõng ai muoán giaùo
xöù töôûng nieäm baèng khaéc ghi teân tuoåi treân baûn
ñoàng, tieàn daâng cuùng toái thieåu laø $1,000.
