The Bible Speaks 

An important Biblical principle 

underlies the Gospel in the 

wilderness: The Testing. I know, 

my God, that You test the heart 

and are pleased with integrity. 

(1 Chron 29:17) If God is calling 

you to do something for Him, 

as He did His Son Jesus (Matt 

3:16-17), you can expect to be 

tested (Matt 6:13), and you can 

expect testing commensurate 

with the seriousness of your 

call. In a similar manner we, 

too, are enjoined by God to test 

everything to avoid deception: 

Dear friends, do not believe 

every spirit, but test the spirits to 

see whether they are from God, 

because many false prophets 

have gone out into the world. (1 

Jn 4:1) 

Testing is for our good 

and ultimately for God’s purpose: 

when Biblical heroes (Abraham, 

Joseph, Moses, Esther, Ruth, 

David, Daniel) had matured 

through the time of testing, they 

knew the depth of God’s grace 

that had sustained them. They

did not boast in their success 

in the test but in God’s power, 

without which they could not 

have overcome the hardships or 

themselves: Trust in the Lord 

with all your heart and lean 

not on your own understanding 

(Prov 3:5); Be strong in the Lord 

and in the power of His might. 

(Eph 6:10) 

Testing, like the 

wilderness experience of Jesus, is 

the indispensable preparation and, 

for us lesser beings, purification 

for the Task. The Bible 

emphasizes that Jesus, unlike 

Israel, passed His test in the 

wilderness. Their failure turned 

a journey of forty days into forty 

years! There is a capacity for great 

evil and great good in all of us. 

Most of us are held in check by 

the constraints of religion, morays 

and institutions in which we are 

raised. Great tasks, however, 

are most often accomplished by 

solitary individuals operating 

far outside and often in conflict 

with the norms and customs 

of society. There in the desert 

under enormous pressure and 

facing the most obstinate and 

violent opposition the character 

will endure or break. That 

character must be tested lest 

the subterranean current of 

pride come to the surface at the 

divining of temptation: For even 

Christ did not please Himself 

but, as it is written: ‘The insults 

of those who insult you have 

fallen on Me.’ For everything 

that was written in the past 

was written to teach us, so that 

through endurance and the 

encouragement of the Scriptures 

we might have hope. (Rom 15:3- 

4) 

Scripture teaches us 

to rely upon THE SPIRIT to 

be our helper and guide, to be 

our comforter and teacher and 

companion, to be our memory 

and prayer-partner. But hear the 

Word: Then Jesus was led up by 

the Spirit into the wilderness 

to be tempted by the devil. 

(Matt 4:1) Why would God 

The Holy Spirit lead God The 

Son into temptation? Why must 

that test subject His Son to such 

humiliation and heartbreak? I 

am speaking about the whip, 

the scourging, the mockery and 

the Crucifixion. Why would 

Jesus subject Himself to John’s 

baptism? Indeed, why would He 

empty Himself so as to be born 

like us and open Himself to all 

that mortality entails? You must 

have the same attitude that 

Christ Jesus had. Though He 

was God, He did not think of

equality with God as something 

to cling to. Instead, He gave up 

His divine privileges; He took 

the humble position of a slave 

and was born as a human being. 

When He appeared in human 

form, He humbled Himself in 

obedience to God and died a 

criminal’s death on a cross. 

(Phil 2:5-11) Surely there could 

have been no doubt in God’s 

mind about His Son’s worthiness 

or willingness to take up and 

accomplish the great Task of 

Salvation set before Him: Do you 

see what this means—all these 

pioneers who blazed the way, all 

these veterans cheering us on? It 

means we’d better get on with it. 

Strip down, start running—and 

never quit! No extra spiritual 

fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your 

eyes on Jesus, Who both began 

and finished this race we’re in. 

Study how He did it. Because He 

never lost sight of where He was 

headed—that exhilarating finish 

in and with God—He could 

put up with anything along the 

way: Cross, shame, whatever. 

(Heb 12:2, The Message) But 

we’re talking about us, here, and 

not about The Messiah. And 

there is some doubt in our minds 

about God’s will and grace and 

loving kindness…when the testing 

comes to us! And given our past 

performance when tempted, God 

has every reason to test us before 

entrusting to us the great tasks 

and callings of the Kingdom. 

The three temptations of 

Jesus recall Israel’s failure in the 

wilderness and provide the perfect 

model for triumphing in testing. 

Jesus is our vicarious champion, 

relinquishing His own power for 

His Task to save us from our sins. 

David was Israel’s champion when 

he fought Goliath on behalf of and 

as a representative of his people. 

Christians are destined for testing: 

Keep watching and praying 

that you may not enter into 

temptation; the spirit is willing, 

but the flesh is weak. (Matt 

26:41) Jesus has gone before us 

and shown us how to overcome. 

The devil tempts Jesus to 

abuse His calling and power for 

selfish ends. God identifies Jesus 

as His Son (Matt 3:16); now, the 

devil tries to redefine the nature 

of Jesus’ son-ship: If you are the 

Son of God, then…do it this 

way. The devil invites Jesus not 

so much to deny His son-ship 

as to act according to various 

worldly expectations for that role, 

expectations that serve the devil’s 

purposes. This is a warning to 

all of us whom God has called 

not to let the world define the 

content of our call or the task to 

which we are called. Some priests 

would be better suited to the task 

of school teacher or social worker 

or therapist or cheerleader instead 

of preaching the Gospel of Jesus 

Christ: You adulterous people, 

don’t you know that friendship 

with the world is hatred toward 

God? Anyone who chooses to be 

a friend of the world becomes 

an enemy of God. (Jam 4:4) 

We must accept with sacrificial 

obedience God’s right not only 

to determine what to label our 

calling but also to refine us for the 

task through testing. AMEN.

Bishop Barbarito Message on DSA 2013 

One of my favorite passages 

from Sacred Scriptures reflecting 

the Year of Faith and the 

New Evangelization focuses on 

the story of the mustard seed. 

“It is like a mustard seed, that 

when it is sown 

in the ground, is the smallest 

for a person or a family. Our 

purpose in Christ is to touch 

people and change their lives for 

the better. Christ Himself commissioned 

the Church to carry 

on His work: 

The Spirit of the Lord is upon 

me, because he has anointed 

me to proclaim good news to 

the poor. 

He has sent me to proclaim 

liberty to the captives and recovering 

of sight to the blind, 

to set at liberty those who are 

oppressed, to proclaim the 

year of the Lord's favor. 

(Luke 4:18-19) 

We have a heart for the economically 

and socially poor, 

especially for those who are 

most vulnerable among us-- 

the unborn child in the womb, 

single parents, widows and 

orphans, the unemployed, the 

destitute and homeless persons 

on our streets, those who left 

their homes and families behind 

to find work in South Florida, 

the incarcerated, the lonely old 

and those who carry the heavy 

of all the seeds on the earth. 

But once it is sown, it springs 

up and becomes the largest 

of plants and puts forth large 

branches, so that the birds of 

the sky can dwell in its shade” 

(Mk 4: 31-32).

It is an exciting time in Church 

history when we celebrate both 

the Year of Faith and a call to a 

New Evangelization. We are the 

Body of Christ in the 

PREPARING FOR LENT: 

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. 

Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. 

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age through age 59. On a fast day, one 

full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be 

taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another 

full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk 

and juices, are allowed. 

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence 

no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously 

affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, 

the parish priest should be consulted. 

Fasting, Almsgiving and Prayer are the three disciplines of Lent. The faithful 

and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of 

penance, and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

My message is the practice 

of compassion, love 

and kindness. Compassion 

can be put into practice if one 

recognizes the fact that every 

human being is a member of 

humanity and the human 

family regardless of differences 

in religion, culture, color and

Deep down there is no 

difference. Each of us in our 

own way can try to spread 

compassion into people’s 

hearts. 

Western civilizations these 

days place great importance on 

filling the human “brain” with 

knowledge, but no one seems 

to care about filling the human 

“heart” with compassion. This 

is what the real role of religion is. 

Nowadays the world is 

becoming increasingly 

materialistic, and mankind 

is reaching toward the very 

zenith of external progress, 

driven by an insatiable desire 

for power and vast possessions. 

Yet by this vain striving for 

perfection in a world where 

everything is relative, they 

wander even further away from 

inward peace and happiness 

of the mind. This we can all 

bear witness to, living as we 

do plagued by unremitting 

anxiety... 

It becomes more and more 

imperative that the life of the 

spirit be avowed as the only 

firm basis upon which to 

establish happiness and peace. 

This is my simple religion. 

There is no need for temples; 

no need for complicated 

philosophy. Our own brain, 

our own heart is our temple; 

the philosophy is kindness.

We mark the passing from 

this world unto God of a 

faithful parishioner of St. Thomas 

More. 

Mrs. Anna, as she was fondly 

known, surpassed the venerable 

age of 100. She lived in her own 

home until a very brief stay in 

hospital. She received the Last 

Rites and comfort of The Church 

and her priests. 

Mrs. Anna’s name will forever be 

remembered and honored for her 

great generosity to St. Thomas 

More. 

During the pastorate of Rev. 

Frank O’Laughlin, Mrs. Anna 

was the major benefactor of the 

St. Thomas More Pre-School 

and Faith Formation Buildings. 

She endowed a fund, The Anna 

Turri Trust, to benefit the Pre- 

School and to provide assistance 

to needy families when interest 

was available. She was a practical 

Catholic lady, giving of her tithes 

and offerings, and worshiping on 

the Lord’s Day in the chapel. 

Many Eucharistic Ministers have 

visited Mrs. Anna with Holy 

Communion over the years, 

but most prominent among 

them are Josephine Desantis, 

Vita Dean and most recently 

Lucille Swinney. Mrs. Anna 

bore her physical pain without 

complaint and with great courage, 

maintained her devotion to the 

Blessed Virgin and often prayed 

through the night from her easy 

chair by the window. She knew 

little comfort and accepted her 

suffering in the spirit of Christ 

Crucified. It was a privilege to 

minister to her, and Rev. Alex 

Vargas, Rev. Peter Truong join me 

in commending Mrs. Anna to the 

mercy of God and her family to 

the consolation of the Spirit.

Sharing the Gospel With Your Children 

Adapted from Thom Schultz’s article “Sharing the Gospel with your children” 

Many Catholic parents face 

a paradox: How can some 

children hear the good news of 

the Bible and believe, while others 

hear the same message and 

remain unaffected? While the 

process of faith may be miraculous, 

it is not entirely mysterious. 

Jesus explained it in His 

parable of the sower (Matthew 

13:1-23). Teaching received 

without understanding kills the 

yield. Faith with shallow roots 

withers and dies. Distractions, 

worries and desires for other 

things choke the Word. But one 

who hears the Word and understands 

it bears fruit. 

How can we help our children 

receive the Word and bear fruit? 

Jesus' parable inspires several 

practical planting tips. 

Focus on understanding. Many 

parents and teachers attempt to 

impart faith primarily through 

the transfer of Bible facts. Those 

seeds will not likely take root 

unless kids truly understand 

the meaning of the facts. Many 

Faith Formation worksheets 

often use fill-in-the-blanks and 

word puzzles to drill children on 

their factual knowledge. But unscrambling 

the word forgiveness 

in a puzzle is far less important 

than understanding the meaning 

of forgiveness. Hearing is not 

enough. Reading is not enough. 

Memorizing is not enough. 

Concentrate your time on helping 

kids really understand God's 

Word, its relevance today and 

how you apply it. 

Let them experience the message. 

People remember and are 

affected by vivid experiences. 

When Jesus wanted His disciples 

to learn about servanthood, 

He got down on His knees and 

washed their feet. You can be 

sure those disciples never forgot 

that faith lesson! You can do the 

same with your children. For example, 

to help them experience 

the concept of grace, involve 

your family in giving to others 

without expecting anything in 

return. Or to encourage kind 

words as mentioned in Ephesians 

4:29, invite family members 

to write or draw a kind note 

to one another. (For more ideas 

on teaching through experiences, 

visit Heritage Builders.) 

Use teachable moments. Typically, 

when your kids are enveloped 

in emotion-packed situations, 

they are the most ready to grow. 

When circumstances provoke 

feelings of fear, sadness, anger, 

exhilaration, awe or wonder, be 

prepared to help them see how 

God is working. When Johnny 

is scared may be the opportune 

time to teach about God's presence. 

Jesus took advantage of 

teachable moments often, such 

as during the storm on the lake 

and with those who threatened

to stone the adulterous woman. 

Reinforce for long-term retention. 

Some information we 

quickly forget. Other things we 

remember a lifetime. We can 

help move more of God's message 

into long-term memory 

through "interval reinforcement," 

review or use of the message 

repeatedly over time. If the 

brain registers information just 

once, less than 10 percent of the 

message is likely to be remembered 

after 30 days. But if there 

are six exposures to the information 

over 30 days, 90 percent 

of the message is likely to be 

retained. If you want your kids 

to understand God as Creator, 

repeat the message frequently 

— when you drive through the 

mountains, when you witness a 

sunset, when you visit the zoo 

and when you marvel at the 

intricacy of the human body. 

Avoid bribes. Many wellintentioned 

parents and teachers 

attempt to grow their kids' 

faith through the enticement of 

rewards. "Learn this verse and 

get a ribbon." "Go to Sunday 

school and get a cookie." It may 

seem harmless, but bribing kids 

actually sets up a distraction. 

The "do this and get that" approach 

causes kids to focus more 

on the "that" than the "this." 

Jesus never said, "If you do unto 

others what you want them to 

do to you, you get a lollipop," or 

"If you feed My sheep, you get a 

Twinkie." 

Employ delight. Your kids will 

learn more when they enjoy the 

process. Make learning about 

God fun! Some parents and 

teachers wince at this suggestion. 

Few people gain a love for 

anything that is marinated in 

drudgery. No one ever accused 

Jesus of being dull or boring. In 

fact, consider His first miracle: 

turning water into wine for the 

wedding at Cana. And remember 

how He told Peter to find 

cash for the temple tax — go 

catch a fish and pull a coin from 

its mouth. Delightful! So, make 

faith learning delightful. 

Jesus concludes His parable: 

"The one who received the seed 

that fell on good soil is the 

man who hears the word and 

understands it. He produces a 

crop, yielding a hundred, sixty 

or thirty times what was sown" 

(Matthew 13:23). What crop 

are you plotting with your kids?

LENT WITH KIDS 

Young children have a hard 

time understanding Lent. 

One way of explaining Lent is 

that it's a time to bring us closer 

to God. In our busy lives we fill 

our selves with candy, buy new 

toys, play video games and watch 

television which makes us happy 

but that happiness is temporary. 

During Lent we stop filling our 

lives with temporary happiness 

and make more room for God. 

The church encourages prayer, 

fasting and almsgiving during Lent 

as ways we can turn our hearts and 

minds to God. During this time 

we attempt to incorporate activities 

in our daily lives which will 

strengthen us. Many people "give 

up" something important to them 

for the 40 days of Lent. To learn 

how to sacrifice or give up things is 

a way of learning unselfishness.
