General Information<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

The Division of Primary Care Internal<br />

Medicine is pleased to offer this one-day<br />

program to provide attendees with current<br />

information on the care of the elderly,<br />

including clinical evaluation, management<br />

strategies and innovative practice models.<br />

All topics are selected for their clinical<br />

relevance. Time is allocated for questions<br />

and discussion.<br />

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

Upon conclusion of this program,<br />

participants should be able to:<br />

• Describe key prognostic elements &<br />

hospice criteria for common, chronic<br />

life-threatening conditions of the elderly<br />

• Formulate effective management<br />

strategies for patients with advanced COPD<br />

• Discuss common causes and treatment<br />

options for elderly patients with<br />

constipation<br />

• Appraise new drugs and new uses for<br />

existing drugs that are pertinent to<br />

geriatric practice<br />

• Discuss assessment, management, and<br />

prevention strategies for common<br />

complications occurring in hospitalized<br />

elderly patients<br />

• Develop an appreciation of the skills<br />

needed to be a Transitional Care Team<br />

member<br />

• Outline the appropriate indications, safety,<br />

and role of laboratory monitoring with<br />

use of oral coagulation factor inhibitors<br />

Attendance at this <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> course does<br />

not indicate nor guarantee competence or<br />

proficiency in the performance of any<br />

procedures which may be discussed or<br />

taught in this course.<br />

INTENDED AUDIENCE<br />

This course is designed for primary care<br />

physicians including family practitioners,<br />

internists, general practitioners, advanced<br />

nurse practitioners, physician assistants,<br />

and those who care for elderly patients in<br />

the community, assisted living, and nursing<br />

home settings.<br />

CREDIT<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> College of Medicine is<br />

accredited by the Accreditation Council for<br />

Continuing Medical Education to provide<br />

continuing medical education for physicians.<br />

<strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> College of Medicine<br />

designates this live activity for a maximum<br />

of 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.<br />

Physicians should claim only the credit<br />

commensurate with the extent of their<br />

participation in the activity.<br />

Application for CME credit has been filed<br />

with the American Academy of Family<br />

Physicians. Determination of credit is<br />

pending.<br />

DATE AND LOCATION<br />

The Geriatric Update for the Primary Care<br />

Provider course is held Thursday,<br />

November 14, 2013. <strong>Course</strong> headquarters<br />

are located in Leighton Auditorium on the<br />

second floor of the Siebens Building, <strong>Mayo</strong><br />

<strong>Clinic</strong>, 100 Second Avenue Southwest,<br />

Rochester, Minnesota.<br />

The registration fee includes tuition,<br />

continental breakfast, refreshment breaks,<br />

A letter of confirmation will be sent upon<br />

receipt of payment and completed<br />

registration form. Please present this letter<br />

when checking in at the meeting<br />

registration desk.<br />

CANCELLATION POLICY<br />

If you cancel your participation in this<br />

course, your registration fee, less a $75<br />

administrative fee, will be refunded when<br />

written notification is received by <strong>Mayo</strong><br />

School of CPD before October 31, 2013<br />

edu). No refunds will be made after<br />

October 31, 2013.

the right to cancel or postpone any course<br />

due to unforeseen circumstances. In the<br />

unlikely event <strong>Mayo</strong> School of CPD must<br />

cancel or postpone this course, <strong>Mayo</strong> School<br />

of CPD will refund the registration fee, but is<br />

not responsible for any related costs, charges,<br />

or expenses to participants, including fees<br />

assessed by airline/travel/lodging agencies.<br />

TRAVEL<br />

Rochester, Minnesota is serviced by multiple<br />

flights daily from Chicago and Minneapolis.<br />

Access to and from the airport is provided by<br />

taxi, shuttle service, and rental car. The<br />

airport is located approximately 10 miles<br />

from the <strong>Mayo</strong> <strong>Clinic</strong> campus.<br />

Note to Travelers: Several cities in the United<br />

States are named Rochester. When you make<br />

airline reservations and check your baggage,<br />

be sure that your destination is Rochester,<br />

Minnesota (RST) and that your baggage has<br />

been properly tagged.<br />

attendees and their guests with special course<br />

Rochester hotels. In order to receive the<br />

special rate, reservations must be made<br />

before the room block is filled or before the<br />

taken following this date based on space and<br />
