Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas,
Second Homily
Today is the Feast of Corpus Christi. It is a traditional celebration of the gift of the Eucharist,
the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. We come forward to eat and drink of the Lord’s gift of
Himself. The bread and wine become the Body and Blood of our Lord. It is Christ’s life
poured out for us. With the bread and wine, we also offer ourselves. When we receive
these transformed gifts, we are reminded that we, too, are being transformed. It is at the Eucharistic table
that we are fed and nourished with the Lord’s life so that we can feed and nourish others. It is through us
also that people come to know who Christ is for them. As we celebrate the Body and Blood of Christ, we are
to help feed the hungry who are searching for the Lord’s love and presence in their life. After all, Jesus said,
“Do this in remembrance of me.” St. Augustine wrote:
What you see is the bread and the chalice;
that is what your own eyes report to you.
But what your faith obliges you to accept is that
the bread is the Body of Christ
and the chalice the Blood of Christ...
How is the bread his Body?
And that which is in the chalice - how is it his Blood?
Those elements, brothers and sisters, are called sacraments,
because in them one thing is seen,
but another is understood.
What is seen is the corporeal species
but what is understood is the spiritual fruit...
You yourselves are the Body of Christ and his members.
If you are the Body of Christ and his members,
it is your own mystery that is presented
at the table of the Lord,
you receive your mystery.
To that which you are -- you answer: "Amen..."
For you hear: "The Body of Christ!" and you answer: "Amen!"
You hear: "The Blood of Christ!" and you answer: "Amen!"
Be a member of Christ's Body, then,
so that your "Amen" may be the truth.
This weekend is Graduation Weekend at St. Thomas of Villanova. We are happy to celebrate this academic
achievement for our fourteen 8th graders of the Class of 2013. We are proud of them and know that they will
be successful in their chosen high school. At the same time, we congratulate our Principal John LaRoche as
he graduates to high school in Florida. And we congratulate daily Mass attendee Catherine Higgins as she
graduates into the Century Club! Happy 100th Birthday on June 8th!

NEWS FROM THE PEWS Invitation to AN OPEN MEETING
The PPC (Parish Pastoral Council) is a ministry that deals with resolving the issues facing our parish on a
regular basis. The PPC addresses the spoken and unspoken needs of our community. Guided by the Holy
Spirit, PPC members are empowered by the Pastor and by one another to affect needed change and
develop solutions to concerns that are brought forward. The PPC consists of Clergy, Staff and Parishioner
volunteers working together to help achieve the Parish Mission for following Jesus and building God's
kingdom. Our PPC has a solid Christian foundation based on spirituality, prayer, scripture and guidance
by the Holy Spirit. It is a "Parish" council in that it deals with the broad issues affecting the overall
parish, whether in parish life, religious formation, liturgy, building and grounds, education and social
justice. Our current PPC would like to share what the PPC is and does by having an "Open" informational
meeting Monday June 10th in MRA at 7:00P.M. We invite parishioners to please come and learn more
about this most important Ministry.

On Bad Meals, and a Great One
To me, the enjoyment of good food is one of life's greatest
experiences, and I've had some very memorable experiences. The
food has ranged from simple to rich, but it has all touched me in
some way; and, without sounding overly dramatic, I believe it has
enhanced my life for the positive. Were those edible flowers in my
salad at a mountain resort in Colorado on my
tenth wedding anniversary worth the cost of an
expensive meal? No, and yet I consumed them
over twenty years ago now; and I've never
forgotten them. Was that wintertime cup of hot
chocolate that Mrs. Neumann gave me forty years
ago when I was delivering her newspaper
prepared from gourmet chocolate and heavy
cream? Probably not, and yet to this day it
remains the best cup of hot chocolate I've ever
tasted. Was that churrasco I had for lunch in
Santo Domingo last year really all that
extraordinary? Well, actually, it was.
And yet this conversation can go the other way,
too. What about all the bad meals? The Nobel
prize-winning Chicago Tribune columnist Mary
Schmich wrote a piece a while back about the
sadness that can be generated by time and
money wasted over bad--or at least non-memorable--food.
Unfortunately, I've had a few of these experiences as well. Just the
other day, my wife and I stopped at a local restaurant for a late
Friday night meal. We split some thick-cut fries and a Reuben. The
fries were great. The Reuben, not so much. I've had countless
fast-food burgers in the car over the years, most of which left me
filled, but unfulfilled. And in my memory, the single worst meal I've
ever had was a food court order of something called Buffalo Bites up
at the House on the Rock in Wisconsin. They were orange. They
were mostly breading. They were chopped-and-formed chicken,
which is OK for products like this. These bites, though, took chopped
-and-formed to whole new low.
The readings for today--the Solemnity of the Most
Holy Body and Blood of Christ--all speak to us of
food and drink. In Genesis, the priest
Melchizedek brings out bread and wine to share
with Abram. In the Gospel, we hear again of
Jesus feeding thousands with five loaves and
two fish. Both of these texts point to the second
reading, Paul's letter to the Corinthians, in which
the apostle recounts the story of Christ at the
Last Supper. "This is my body that is for you,"
Jesus said upon taking bread and giving thanks.
"Do this in remembrance of me." Paul adds
that in similar fashion, Jesus took wine, saying,
"This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do
this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of
me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink
the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until
he comes again." And there it is: the best meal
ever. It's simple. It's rich. It's extraordinary in a very ordinary sort of
way. Per Virginia Woolf, "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well,
if one has not dined well." Exactly. Christ has set the bread of life
and the cup of salvation before us. Way better than Buffalo Bites,
and if we approach the Eucharistic meal as we should, it will never
leave us filled,
