We remember “Mr. Budweiser” Mike Roarty 

St. Patrick Center remembers Michael Roarty, who passed away on March 16, 2013 after a long life of family, 

friends and a remarkable career. 

The son of Irish immigrants, Mike loved the beer business and began working in it while in college in his 

native Detroit. Anheuser-Busch hired him in 1954. Mike was soon nicknamed “Mr. Budweiser” and that 

moniker stuck with him over his respectable career, one that spanned 42 years with the St. Louis brewer. 

(August “Gussie” Busch, Jr. brought Mike to St. Louis in 1972.) 

Remember these famous ad campaigns? “This Bud’s for you.” “Weekends were made for Michelob.” “Head 

for the mountains of Busch.” Mike managed these memorable projects as A-B’s vice president and director of 

marketing from 1977-1990. These and other notable campaigns landed Mike in the Advertising Hall of Fame 

in 1995. “Dad loved working with all kinds of people – at the brewery, at the creative agencies – and people 

loved working with him and for him,” says daughter Mary Santiviago. 

In the years leading up to and surrounding his retirement as an executive VP in 1994, Mike was named Irish 

American of the Year by Irish America magazine (1991); 6th Most Powerful Figure in American Sports by 

The Sporting News (1993); and Grand Marshal of Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade (1994). Mike played a 

role in bringing the Budweiser brand to Ireland and traveled there every year with wife Lillian for the Irish 

Derby. Even there, they called him Mr. Budweiser. 

Mike was married to Lillian for nearly 60 years. He and Lillian had two children, Sean (St. Louis) and 

Mary (Washington, DC). Sean married Molly and had two children: Michael, named for his grandfather, 

and Margaret. Mary married Sergio Santiviago and had two sons: Teddy and Andrew. “When Dad wasn’t 

working or traveling, it was all about private time with family and friends. He loved singing around the piano 

and going out to dinner. I’ll miss his sense of humor and the way he could light up a room.” 

Mike became a supporter of St. Patrick Center because of his belief in the agency’s mission. He was an 

important part of the Irish Dinner at the Missouri Athletic Club, where his colorful stories were the highlight 

of the evening. “Dad believed in people and their power to succeed. He liked St. Patrick Center because the 

team gives people the tools they need to be successful.”

homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Individuals and families build permanent, positive 

change in their lives through safe and affordable housing, sound mental and physical health, and 

employment and financial stability.

We Remember… January 2013 

In Memory of Deceased Donor Name 

The St. Patrick Center family remembers John Boehm, who passed 

away on March 2, 2013. 

John’s wife of 60 years, Pat, remembers him as a “very generous, 

loving, gentle man.” Together they had ten children, nine of whom 

are married and the baby of the family is Rev. Michael P. Boehm, 

pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Washington, Missouri. John 

was a loving “Paw Paw” to his 21 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. 

The Boehms are a close-knit family. “Everyone gets 

along and helps each other. We are so blessed,” says Pat. 

John worked as a real estate salesman and appraiser. In his spare 

time, he loved to golf. “He wasn’t very good at it,” Pat admits, “but he 

sure enjoyed it.” He was also a dedicated member of the Gentlemen 

of Sound barbershop chorus, singing the lead in their four-part a 

cappella harmonies. John was such an important part of the group 

that 30 men sang barbershop songs at his funeral! 

John was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in 

University City, where Pat says some parishioners referred to him 

as “the Patriarch of Lourdes.” 

In addition to all of this, John was a long-time volunteer for 

St. Patrick Center. For more than ten years, he served one day a week 

at our former donation center on Warson Road, collecting and sorting 

donated food and clothing. “He really enjoyed it and volunteered there 

until it closed,” Pat adds.

The St. Patrick Center family remembers Joe Green, who passed 

away on December 16, 2012. 

Joe was born on June 6, 2001 to Tim and Sue Green. He had two 

older sisters -- Katie, 22 and Abbie, 15 – and a younger brother, Sean, 

9. According to his mom Sue, Joe packed a lot of good things into his 

very short life. 

A 6th grader at Christ Prince of Peace Catholic School, Joe 

performed well at everything. “He was very conscientious about 

school, was good at chess and loved sports,” Sue says. “Joe played 

baseball and basketball, but soccer was his favorite, playing all 

through grade school.” His dad Tim was his coach for both of his 

school teams. Joe also played forward for the St. Louis Scott Gallagher 

Soccer Club, scoring many goals. 

Despite all of Joe’s attributes, he was always humble. “He just had 

that kind of personality; very humble, not one to brag.” Described 

as quiet, observant and well-liked, Joe was also a good friend. His 

younger brother Sean was probably his best friend. “He was a good 

friend to everybody.” 

Joe was healthy before being diagnosed with Myelodysplastic 

syndrome, a disorder that affects the blood marrow. His friends 

raised $25,000 in his memory with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an 

organization that helps individuals and businesses raise money for 

children’s cancer research by shaving their heads for donations. 

The Greens are longtime supporters of St. Patrick Center. Their 

family is very active in the agency’s Casserole Program – the Greens 

donate through their parish Christ Prince of Peace Catholic Church 

and Joe’s grandmother Kathy McGuire through her parish St. Angela 

Merici. Joe would often deliver the casseroles to the agency. “His 

favorite was the chicken noodle casserole and he loved to eat it when I 

prepared it for the program!” 

Joe’s parents thought it was fitting to include St. Patrick Center for 

donations on Joe’s behalf because of their son’s compassion for 

helping people struggling with homelessness. “He knew that we were 

helping people who are homeless. He often prayed for them at night, 

including them in our nighttime prayers. He was a good kid.”

Our Spirituality Statement 

In solidarity with the traditional social teaching of the Catholic Church, St. Patrick Center embraces the attitude 

of Jesus as servant to the poor. We espouse a spirituality that places our clients at the center of all decisions. 

St. Patrick Center will work with our clients in a holistic manner: honoring their dignity and human rights; 

listening to each individual; providing for emotional, physical and spiritual needs; and creating an environment 

that encourages all to be the best they can be. 

Working as servant-leaders, staff and volunteers will manifest an attitude of openness that is inclusive of all 

faith, beliefs and cultures; humility based on truth; compassion not influenced by sentimentality or stereotype; and 

love that both champions and profoundly respects the free will of each person.
