NEW RECIPROCATING SAW DOUBLES AS A FILE
A cut above
SUHNER is to launch early in
the new year an economy
hand-held pneumatic reciprocating
tool that is dedicated
towards the needs of customers
with straightforward saw
and file jobs on their to-do list.
“We’ve been working closely
with fabricators to the major aerospace
manufacturers for some
years and they are already big
users of our flexible shaft
machines, angle grinders and
abrasive products,” said Suhner
Export Manager Peter Streutker.
“When we first started developing
the LFC10 we realised that
this kind of power tool could have
huge benefits in the sector. All our
trials so far have borne this out.
We’ve considered power, weight,
size, manoeuvrability and comfort.”
Unlike most saws, which are
used primarily to make precise
cuts, reciprocating saws – so
named because of the back-andforth
action of the blade – are
often used for rough cuts, and this
new generation from Suhner has
plenty of power to the blade to
quickly get you through material
such as wood, metal, stainless
steel and composites. Its 250W
motor and 200 cycle per second
movement is designed for fast cutting
steel plate up to 2mm thick.
and plastic up to 5mm.
The quick change of the saw
blades is one reason why this tool
is so versatile. And because of its
diversity of materials it cuts
through – it can be used on any
type of plastic or glass fibre – its
value will not be lost on the boat
industry, aviation, or automotive
body shops.
“Also, unlike cordless tools that
lose power as the battery drains,
this pneumatic tool delivers reliable,
consistent performance with
unlimited run time. A refinement of
this model includes an adjustment
allowing a diveristy of tasks using
a coarse blade flat-out, or a slowmoving
fine tooth blade which is
what you need to cut through steel.
“That’s a really great feature of
this tool …the ability to quickly
switch out the blades. This allows
the user to pick the right blade for
the right application,” said Peter.
The design of the LFC10 looks
like a little jackhammer – just the
ticket for reaching into places inaccessible
with other power saws.
And no other piece of pneumatic
equipment let’s you change from
being a saw to a file as easily. No
tools are required. Just an allan
key.
“We provide our customers with
the products to make them more
efficient. The saw's durability
makes this tool suitable for use in
refineries, offshore oil, marine, mining,
petrochemical, power generation,
industrial plant maintenance
and construction,” added Peter.
STEEL glazing specialist Multi
Firescreens Systems has won
recognition for the way they protect
buildings against fire.
The Hayling Island-based firm
has achieved accreditation under
the Warrington Fire Research
FIRAS framework – a national
standard seal of approval – that
ensures installers use only appropriate
steel framed and fire resistant
glazing.
The company is one of only
about 12 in the country who fabricate
and install fire resistant glazing
to be singled out to use the
quality mark and Director Jeff
Sirrs views FIRAS as an invaluable
addition to his industry, and
one which he says should be a
pre-requisite for all installers of
fire-rated steel glazing systems.
He said: “We take our responsibilities
to clients and to professional
specifiers who recommend
our systems extremely seriously
and see this scheme as a vital
additional safeguard.”
The company has a rolling training
programme with FIRAS with
more qualified installation personnel
than any other installer in the
South of England. Added Jeff:
“No matter how good products
are, poorly installed their fire protection
performance can be
severely reduced. Because
FIRAS standards are designed in
at every stage we are subject to
random site visits to check conformance
to best practice.
“We feel that this accreditation is
helping to make it easier for purchasers
to feel confident to buy
services from us.”
Jeff spent more than 11
years working for other
people in the business
and six years ago he
thought the time was right to go
out on his own.
He started the business with three
people and since then the company
has evolved and expanded
to the stage where it now has 12
employees and has emerged as a
major player in its markets. "Our
current level of growth is most
encouraging, and we are forecasting
a further 20 per cent in 2009.
Eventually, we will be looking to
relocate, but we are determined to
stay in the Hampshire area and to
continue contributing to the local
economy," he said.
Glass is a sophisticated and versatile
product on which building
designers rely heavily for aesthetics,
performance and protection.
Specialist glasses that offer fire
resistance from 30 minutes up to
120 minutes integrity and insulation
allow innovative architectural
concepts to become a reality if
installed correctly.
Fire resistant frame and door
systems are manufactured from
either mild steel or stainless steel
profiles that can be provided in a
variety of finishes. And it's not
without a little help from Suhner.
Sales manager John Beer said:
“We draw on a variety of tools
from orbital and belt sanders to
grinders which cover a range of
activities that are key to producing
a brushed finish.
“We’d been to a company exhibition
in Switzerland where all the
machinery being used was
Suhner’s – and what they were
using was better than what we
had. It’s down to quality and we
can’t afford to send out anything
unless it’s right.
"We spend more time ensuring
that everything is done right first
time. It is important that our work
promotes the quality and service
we offer," added John who
believes the other key to their
success is flexibility and an ability
to respond to very short lead
times.
The company supplies regularly
to universities and hospitals, their
work can be seen at Heathrow
Airport’s Terminal 5, Sandown
Racecourse, National Air Traffic
Control’s corporate and technical
centre at Whiteley, near Fareham
and Ipswich Town Football Club .
They are also a bit of an expert
on the different levels of bullet
resistant glass, providing products
for the Ministry of Defence.
EXPLODING MYTHS
GRINDING wheels used in
welding and fabrication are
strong, tough tools but they are
breakable.
Unfortunately break-proof
wheels don’t exist says Suhner
(UK) Managing Director Ulrich
Ruetsch.
“Grinding wheels are made of
thousands of small abrasive
grains that have been bonded
together. The bond must be
strong enough to hold the abrasive
grains in place, yet friable
enough to release dull grain and
expose fresh cutting points. An
unbreakable wheel simply
wouldn’t grind. So, you must follow
safety procedures as recommended,”
he adds.
So, let’s look at some common
misconceptions - and the facts.
Myth: Grinding wheels are so
tough that they can’t sustain
enough damage to cause them to
break during transportation and
handling.
Wrong, Which is why it is important
to inspect all incoming grinding
wheel deliveries. If you see
any damage to the parcel, don’t
accept it. Always use care when
handling grinding wheels to prevent
damage. Wheels never
should be dropped.
Myth: Once the grinding wheel
is mounted on a machine,
improper storage is no longer a
problem.
heel breakages
and injuries can
occur from
Wunsafe machine
and wheel storage. Don’t store
grinding wheels on machines.
During the work shift, store grinders
and wheels on special racks or
hooks designed to protect them
from accidental damage caused
by, for example, being pulled off a
worktable onto the floor. When a
grinding wheel isn’t on its
machine, store and protect it properly.
Store wheels in original packages
or in other enclosures
designed to protect the grinding
wheels from accidental bumping.
Myth: Grinding wheels can be
stored forever.
You should use grinding wheels
within two years of their manufacture
date. Always rotate grinding
wheel stock so that the oldest
grinding wheel is used first.
Myth: Grinding wheels that have
been chipped, or notched cut better
than wheels without such
damage.
Using a damaged grinding
wheel is dangerous and can
cause accidents, so it’s important
SIMPLE BUT LASTING SOLUTIONS
MAKE COMPOSITE WORK EASY
TODAY’s production environment in aircraft manufacturing
is already a competitive place and staying
at the top requires constant cost cutting with ever
improving quality.
With the ongoing trend towards the use of composite
materials, whether you are working on honeycomb
or plastic fibre reinforced parts or glued or
filled spots you use abrasives. It’s the very use of
these products rather than spending on them that
has an impact on costs.
For trimming carbon, glass or heat-resistant and
strong synthetic fibres, the Turbo Disc cutting wheel
is a product with the ability to shorten grinding
cycles as well as reduce abrasive costs. Available
in diameters 50 to 178mm, the Turbo Disc can be
used at high speeds for precise cuts; it’s faster
because of its thickness so requires less power from
the grinder. The ability of the disc to generate less
heat means it produces practically no burrs.
Together these factors deliver huge benefits for
users – benefits that go straight to their bottom line.
When cleaning and maintaining aircraft interior
components such as baggage compartments, the
combination of the LPB 12, a handy high torque
right angle sander cum pneumatic grinder particularly
suitable for inaccessible areas, together with
performance proven SUN-fix silicon carbide wheels
to inspect the wheel visually for
cracks or other signs of damage
before mounting the wheel.
Myth: Many grinding machines
and wheels are on the market and
they all are safe to use as long as
you can get the grinding wheel on
the machine.
Failure to select the proper
grinding wheel for the machine
you’re using is a major cause of
grinding wheel breakage and injury.
Never mount a grinding wheel
on an air sander or any machine
that isn’t designed and guarded
specifically for that grinding
wheel. Personal injury can occur
when a grinding wheel is mounted
on the wrong machine.
Make sure the wheel is the correct
type for the machine and your
application. For example, wheels
that are 1/8” thick are designed for
notching, root pass grinding, and
shallow cutoff operations in which
the machine and wheel are held
at a 90-degree angle to the workpiece.
Thicker 1/4” wheels are
designed for side grinding when
held at a shallow 30-degree angle
to the workpiece and not flat to the
material being ground.
Myth: Grinders don’t require
maintenance.
Anti clockwise, from
the left: the LOB 12
in operation; powerful
and handy, the
LWB 20; high cutting
speeds with the
Turbo Disc.
ensure maximum removing performances and a
clean grinding pattern – even on the hardest
epoxy resins.
For large areas choose the all-purpose pneumatic
LOB 12 orbital sander that provides a maximum
12,000 rpm with the Abranet® abrasives to
guarantee best results when stripping and paint
cleaning
With Suhner you have the broadest selection of
coated abrasive and non-woven abrasive types
and grades available for applications ranging from
grinding and dimension to defect removal.
Light scratch removal - surface conditioning
discs in diameter 50, 75, 115 and 125mm remove
minor defects without undercutting the work surface.
General deburring – deburring and finishing
wheels in diameter 150 and 200mm are a popular
choice for general deburring in a variety of aerospace
applications.
Weld cleaning – unitised wheels in diamter 75
and 150mm clean welds on airframe sub-assembly
and resist loading and shelling even under
severe operating conditions.
Defect removal - coated abrasive discs in diameter
75, 115 and 125mm save time and money with
efficient removal of defects and deep scratches.
Failure to maintain and inspect
grinders properly can result in
machine failures, such as grinding
wheel overspeed, bent
mounting spindles, distorted
flanges, worn spindle bearings,
and damaged guards. These
maintenance problems can lead
to wheel breakages and serious
injuries. Portable air-driven
grinders require air regulators
that you must maintain and set
for the manufacturer’s recommended
air pressure for the tool
being used.
Don’t be fooled: machine maintenance
is critical to your safety.
Now you can get a mirror finish for less when
you send for the Suhner UTC 7-R tube grinder
Ẏou get something more than you might
expect from this compact belt grinding
machine; an effortless ability to remove weld
seams on tubes and pipes, a versatile hand
tool that wraps an abrasive or finishing belt
around the tube, a uniform surface finish that
can be achieved quickly with one tool leaving
no flat spots.
Stainless steel and aluminium tube is a difficult
shape to grind and polish, as it requires
the ‘grain’ to go around the tube. The UTC
7-R is ‘the hand tool’ that enables the fabricator
to remove weld seams and achieve perfect
surfaces on stainless steel tube in only a few
steps and in a very short time.
At just £470 the UTC 7-R offers great value.
The UTC 7-R hand tool achieves a mirror
finish thanks to belt-adjusting pulleys that enable
up to 30% of the pipe to be handled in one
sweep. It requires only two or three passes to
achieve the final finish - and the importance of
that hasn’t been ignored by the finishing
industry.
The principle of the UTC 7-R is based on
one adjustable and one revolving contact roll.
The rear roll is arranged on a slide and the
machine can be adjusted to different pipe
diameters of up to 60mm, making it particularly
adaptable.
Both contact rolls have guide margins made
of highly wear-resistant polyurethane elastomer
that prevents pipes from being damaged.
