DIIIhhIhIrees <strong>The</strong> Florence Morris Chapter of the Future Teachers of America at its second meeting of the year Monday, October 26, elected officers: President Eddie Corcoran, Vice- President Dick Berens, Treasurer Bill Olson, Secretary Jennie Blodau, and Historian John Cuccia. <strong>The</strong> F.T.A. will have a bake sale the night of the school play, "<strong>The</strong> Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court," <strong>November</strong> 13 in front of the auditorium. All juniors and seniors are invited to join this club. <strong>The</strong> Student Council Finance Committee is now working on the senior high telephone books. <strong>The</strong>y have been getting the names of all Central High students in order to be put in the books. <strong>The</strong>y will sell the phone books during the noon hour. as soon as the books are ready later this month Bill Olson heads this committee. <strong>The</strong> Student Council All-Central Committee laid the plans for Dad's Night. which was held on Oct. 31 (night of the Horlick game). <strong>The</strong>y are also discussing plans for the Student Council - Facuty Tea to be held in <strong>November</strong>. <strong>The</strong> Finance Committee with Bill Olson as chairman and Miss Mc- Cormick as adviser has the following students as members: Dick Putnam, Madeline Pellitterri, Jon Johnson, Carolyn Cuccia, Merle Sweet, Arlene Parmentier, Nancy Narum, John Worden, Susan Hampel, Steve Shifelbind, Sharon Sinn, and John Whilge. <strong>The</strong> Pep Committee, headed by Roger Boeker with Mr. Wendt as advisor, has the following members: Pat LaBarro, Richard Lenzer, Josephine Vitale, Marilyn Mitchell, Joe Germono, Dan Dryden, John Frederick, Jacque Buchanan, Georgia Hackett. Sue Schmeling, Jane Shapiro, Jim Dean, Curtis Shawkey, Peter Karabis, Cynthia Nelson, and Jean Stalder. News Briefs (continued from page 1) last week discussed two main topics. First, the combination Juniort1 Senior Prom came in for consideration when Mr. Marsh stated that the new plan was that the juniors sponsor a farewell dance for the seniors in the spring, which would serve as the main prom of the year. He also said that the reason why there was not a large turnout for either of the proms was that some people could not afford to attend both proms. This new plan could increase the attendance, he added. <strong>The</strong> Junior Class will make a decision on this project at its next meeting. If the plan for a combined prom goes through, the sophomores will sponsor an all-school dance in place of the Junior Prom. <strong>The</strong> second topic was class rings. Mr. Marsh suggested that President Chuck Kneebone should appoint a committee of two or three members from each home room to begin work on the ring situation. Thirty-three In Jr. Girls Sports Junior high after school sports for girls, which meets every Monday and Wednesday, has 33 members at the present time. Among the activities these girls participate in are soccer-baseball, line soccer, battleball and bowling. <strong>The</strong> activities planned for the near future are volleyball, basketball and tournaments. Every Wednesday, beginning last week, the girls meet at the Plaza Bowling Alley for their bowling. <strong>The</strong>re are now 18 members in Bowling and Miss Walker says, "We need more bowlers." Thirty cents is all these girls pay as compared to the regular charge of forty cents. High bowlers of last week were the following: Pat Burton, first; Louise Dybdahl, second; and Kay Ewars. third. Feeney Elected SC President <strong>The</strong> Junior High Student Council recently elected this year's officers: President, Mike Feeney; vice president, Kay Blandino, and secretarytreasurer, Bonnie Paskin. <strong>The</strong> purpose of the Student Council is to encourage the cooperation of the student body in promoting better scholarships, in developing civic pride, and in improving the general welfare of the school. <strong>The</strong> Council has various committees. <strong>The</strong> Buildings and Grounds Committee works toward improving the appearance of the school grounds and the building. <strong>The</strong> Locker Committee sees that the lockers are inspected and cleaned out each month. <strong>The</strong> Fire Drills Committee's purpose is to see that fire-drill directions are written clearly and correctly in each home room. <strong>The</strong> purpose of the Auditorium Committee is to assist teachers in planning aud programs. <strong>The</strong> duty of the Constitution Committee is to act on all amendments referred to it by the President of the Student Council. <strong>The</strong> Social Committee takes charge of parties and picnics and other social activities in Junior High. <strong>The</strong> Welfare Committee is composed of the whole Student Counci. Its duties are to receive suggestions from the student body and faculty for the welfare of the school and to make recommendations concerning the suggestions. Police Chief <strong>Madison</strong>'s new chief of police, Wilbur H. Emery, was sworn into office day before yesterday. <strong>The</strong> city of <strong>Madison</strong> showed good judgment in their choice. Emery, 37, is a 1940 graduate of Central. Library Gets New Volumes <strong>The</strong> Junior High library has several new books this year. Among them is a book of interest to all space-minded students, Men and Women Behind the Atom. <strong>The</strong> author, Sarah R. Riedman, tells about the people behind the release of atomic energy. Now for the first time you can understand the many years which went into the making of the bomb and the peacetime uses of atomic energy in terms of the people behind the scene. Preacher's Kid by Grace Flencher is the story of her childhood. She tells of her experiences as a preacher's daughter. This is a heartwarming and funny story. <strong>The</strong> American Revolution by Bruce Biven, Jr., is the complete and thrilling story of the war, the causes of the war, and the Revolution. I MEMBER OF FD.LC. <strong>The</strong> Central junior high football team battles Cherokee this afternoon in a home game. <strong>The</strong> Junior gridders last Friday lost to East 13-6. <strong>The</strong>ir season's record stands at 14 Coach Olson's boys grabbed a real thriller-dller victory from West last week (Monday) for their first win of the year. <strong>The</strong> Centralites, smarting from three close loses, won the West game, 6-0, in the last 4 minutes. With time running out and West in possession of the ball on Central's four-yard line, Pat MacNamee grabbed a fumble in mid-air when West's quarterback lost control of the ball. Pat then scampered 96 yards for the only TD of the game. Some sensible delaying tactics on the part of Central's quarterback, Fred Loniello, helped kill off a chance for a West rally after that. Coach Olson says Glenn Hierlmeier has been playing some excellent defense for the Central team. Office, Library Monitors Selected Central Junior High has chosen the following students as office monitors: Gerald Rags, first period; Kathy Briggs, second period; Trudy Taylor, third period; Carolyn Vincent, fifth period; Sandra Heggestad, sixth period; and Bonnie Utter, seventh period. <strong>The</strong>se students run errands and do other odd jobs in the office that help Miss Smith and the Junior high secretary, Miss Morben. <strong>The</strong> Junior high library has the following ninth grade girls as library monitors: Charlene Bambrough, Vicky Carlson,-Carol Chpman. Joy Clemens, Vivian Copus, Rita Delaney, Peggy Fisher, Darlene Gilbert, Garnet Gavin, Jill Hannifan, Janeen Larson, Marlene Leu, Mary Maim, Alice Robinson, Janice Strong, Mary Tiedenan, Linda Vick. Lynn Voeck, Nancy Miller, and Luann Roether. <strong>The</strong> girls work in the library during their free periods doing such jobs as stamping books, running errands, and helping keep the library in good order.
