Summer Edition 2012
Since last time…
Since Newcastle stopped running in August 2012, the tempo has been very
high with all departments required to step up to meet the very tight time
frames required to get the ship ready for next years deployment. The IMAV
maintenance package included approximately 650 tasks and in excess of 33000
man hours. The Pre-Workup Training included, but was not limited to;
Command Team Training for the Operations Room at Watson, BM department,
coupled with Boarding party training at Cerberus, a whole ship Combat
Survivability at Crewswell and all departments successfully completing
external Departmental Audits. This challenging period culminated in
Newcastle successfully returning to sea in December, something which all of
the crew contributed towards and should be incredibly proud of.

Captain’s Corner
As I look back on the last six months I am amazed by Newcastle’s achievements both at
sea and alongside. From operating off Cairns to conducting multiple replenishment
serials with HMAS Success, then refitting at Garden Island while undergoing pre-workup
training – its is safe to say that the period since our last edition of Newcastle News has
been anything but dull.
With an ambitious program it is natural to have hiccups along the way. However, one
constant in Newcastle is the ability of the ships company to roll with the punches and
make the best of every situation as a team. I couldn’t wish for anything more and after
much hard work and attention to detail we successfully returned to sea in December.
To our families I thank you for your continued support and encouragement. I wish you all
the very best and a happy time together with our loved ones over the Christmas break. I
trust you will all enjoy the respite and return safely in 2013, with batteries recharged for
what promises to be a challenging and highly rewarding year
Kind Regards
