From The Clergy
A Call to Engage
The economy has drawn our attention over the past few months, and
rightly so. We live in a society where so many have so much, yet we are
aware that there are those who have been suffering for a long time.
This year’s mortgage and market upheavals have deeply impacted
upon the “haves” and devastated the “have-nots.” These financial
realities concern Baltimore Hebrew Congregation in many ways.
First, we must care about society in general and those who face
financial hardship. Rabbi Walter Jacob, who will be installing me this
month, writes: “The struggle to overcome poverty has always been with
us. In the Bible it began with the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. The
barest essentials of life were often beyond reach in the Stone Age and
tragically remain so for many in our century. Judaism has engaged in this
struggle since its beginnings.” We need to engage in discussion about the
social, business, and government issues that helped lead to the current
difficulties. We should also engage in direct action, such as participating
in our ongoing food drive for GEDCO. Our High Holy Day food drive was
as large as ever, but the need continues. Requests for food nationally have
skyrocketed.
Second, we must care about those BHC members whose lives have
been most directly impacted upon by financial crisis. Our doors are open
to listen and lend support. Participation in Congregational life may lessen
understandable feelings of fear and frustration. No one will be turned
away from BHC for financial reasons, but this is not a question of mere
belonging. We are present for our members and can help access resources
towards moving forward.
Third, we appreciate those Congregational members who have been
able to donate generously to BHC. Your financial support helps offset
those who cannot be as generous at the moment. We are a vibrant
Congregation, but our very activity depends upon donations of energy
and resources. To be frank, this is a wonderful moment for those who
have the finances to help the Congregation through this difficult time, for
the sake of our historic institution, and, more importantly, for the sake of
individuals in need and for the future.
May we continue to engage in this struggle to deal with economic
challenges together.
The Installation of Rabbi Andrew Busch
The Congregation is cordially invited to a
special Shabbat worship on Friday, December
5. Following a celebratory Wine and Cheese
reception at 5:45 pm, Rabbi Andrew Busch
will officially assume the position of Senior
Rabbi of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. An
RSVP dinner will follow. Invitations have been
mailed.
Officiating at the installation service will be
Rabbi Walter Jacob. Dr. Jacob is Rabbi Emeritus
and Senior Scholar of Rodef Shalom Congregation in Pittsburgh,
where he served for forty-two years.
For more than a dozen years Rabbi Jacob has played an important
role in re-establishing Liberal Judaism in Central and Eastern
Europe. For these efforts he was honored as Knight Commander
of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2000. He is the president
of the Abraham Geiger College (Berlin/Potsdam, Germany), the
first rabbinic seminary in Central Europe since the Holocaust. The
ordination of its first group of rabbis occurred in 2006 and was
internationally celebrated.
Rabbi Jacob is the author, editor, or translator of thirty-five
books and numerous essays and monographs including Christianity
through Jewish Eyes; The Changing World of Reform Judaism; Not by
Birth Alone, Conversion to Judaism; and Chesed and Zedakah - From Bible
to Modernity. He is president of the Freehof Institute for Progressive
Jewish Law, an international association for Jewish law and ethics.
His interfaith efforts were recognized through the presentation of
the Equestrian Order of St. Gregory by Pope John Paul II.
Rabbi Jacob served as president of the Religious Education
Association of North America. He was president of the Central
Conference of American Rabbis and Vice-President of the World
Union for Progressive Judaism. His life-long interest in Jewish art
led him to establish the Associated American Jewish Museums, an
organization of synagogue museums. He and his wife Irene were the
founders of the first group home for disabled children and adults in
Western Pennsylvania which has grown to thirty units.
Rabbi Jacob was born in Germany and grew up in Springfield,
Missouri. He graduated from Drury College and did his rabbinic
studies at the Hebrew Union College where he received his
doctorate.
Please join us with Rabbi Jacob as we officially welcome Rabbi
Busch to BHC on Friday, December 5.
The High Holy Days: Revisited
A Message from the President
The High Holy Days for 5769 were a wonderful
and memorable experience for members of BHC.
During the four weeks of the High Holy Days,
a great number of worship opportunities were
offered for the entire community. In addition
to worship services, there were a multitude of
special events and programs for each of the
holidays. If you checked the new website, www.
bhcong.org, or the weekly Shabbat Update, you
would have been amazed at the diversity of options for involvement
offered at BHC.
The feedback was fabulous! For many, it was your first exposure
to services conducted by Rabbi Busch and Cantor Solomon.
Everyone was thrilled with their charisma and talent. Add this to all
that Rabbis Sachs-Kohen and Sidlofsky and Cantor Sacks continued
to provide us, and the result was energy and enthusiasm that was
enjoyed throughout the BHC community. From “Rosh Hashanah
Under the Stars” to the unrolling of the Torah scrolls around the
entire Sanctuary on Simchat Torah, Congregants showed up in
record numbers and left enthusiastic and renewed in spirit. Now
that our new senior clergy have shared these holidays with us, they
are busy working with their colleagues to identify what needs to be
improved upon for next year.
During this same period most of our standing committees and
educational programs had their initial meetings and many of the
ongoing activities for the coming year have begun in earnest. This
will definitely be a vibrant year for BHC.
For those of you participating, thank you for you enthusiasm
and support. For those of you who would like to get more involved
in certain aspects of BHC, this is a good time to jump in. Review
our fabulous, easy to use, new website www.bhcong.org, check the
updated, user-friendly Shabbat Update or read the Temple Bulletin
for events or activities that could interest you. BHC is a wonderful
place. Come and enjoy your synagogue!
Chanukah Guide
Baruch Atta Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, She-he-chey-anu V’ki-imanu V’hi-gi-anu Lazman HaZeh.
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who gives us our life, sustains us, and enables us to reach this season.
Food for Thought for Each Night of Chanukah
Before filling our bodies with latkes, here are some thoughts to discuss, one for each night of Chanukah, to help fill our
souls as well. Happy Chanukah!:
On the first night of Chanukah, we recite an extra blessing, the Shehecheyanu, to thank God for giving
us life, sustaining us and bringing us to this day. What are you most thankful for as we begin
celebrating the Festival of Lights?
The blessing for candles says “l’hadlik ner”—to kindle the “light” (singular) of Chanukah. Why do we
use the singular when there are multiple lights? Think about the shamash and how the glow of the
chanukiah begins with a single spark; an individual flame. How will you strive to be the “spark” that
inspires others to shine?
Rabbi Shammai, two thousand years ago, taught that we should begin on the first night of Chanukah
with eight candles, and decrease each night, so as to symbolize the oil which burned for eight days.
His contemporary, Rabbi Hillel, suggested our current custom which is, of course, to increase the
number of candles each night. How will you make the effort to increase light and joy in your life
each day?
We are instructed to place our chanukiah by the window, to proudly display our celebration of
Chanukah. In what ways will you demonstrate your pride in being Jewish this year?
Another reason we place our chanukiah by the window is to ensure that the light is not used for any
additional purpose, but rather for the sheer enjoyment of its beauty. We often forget simply to enjoy
life. What will you do this year purely for healthy enjoyment?
Chanukah celebrates the Maccabees’ victory and rededication of the Temple. How will you rededicate
your home to Judaism this year? (Some ideas: tzedakah box, Jewish books, Jewish art, mezuzah,
together time with your family, inviting guests to your home.)
Chanukah means “rededication,” and is also from the same Hebrew root as the word “chinuch,”
meaning “education.” How will you and your family rededicate yourselves to Jewish education this
year?
The original story of Chanukah does not mention the miracle of the oil. That story only appeared later
in the Talmud. The original version, in the Apocrypha, tells of a military victory. The talmudic rabbis
added the oil story to emphasize the importance of the spiritual superseding the physical. Many of
us exercise our bodies regularly. What will you also do this year to exercise your soul?
Interfaith Institute
Mark your calendar for Monday, March
16, Sisterhood’s 49th Annual Interfaith
Institute, “What Does God Require of
You?: Religious Response to Community
Challenges.”
The seeds planted last year for the school section of our Etz Chaim
project have begun to sprout, and the results are, like the parts of a
growing tree, numerous and beautiful to see.
Now including first, fourth and fifth grades, Etz Chaim has been firing on all cylinders.
At the time of writing this article, in mid-October, we just concluded a very busy, but
wonderful weekend of activities to kick off the year for all involved grades.
Our fourth grade families from both our Religious and Day
Schools had an “awesome” time (to quote the kids) at our
second annual retreat at Pearlstone Retreat Center. Everyone
must have prayed really well over the High Holy Days, as we
were blessed with perfect weather. Families played and prayed,
studied and sang together in a relaxed setting, with a creative
approach to all activities. Highlights included a guided imagery
Shabbat morning service, a Torah roll (unrolling the scroll on Making Kiddush Cups
the legs of the group and discussing its style and content),
making creative havdalah sets, outdoor playing and hiking, and a late-night jam session for
parents with Disco Dave Berenhaus.
The next day, Shauna Leavey and I returned to the same location, this time to visit Kayam
Farm with our First Grade families. A Jewish community farm, Kayam runs programs with a
unique Jewish and environmental twist. Families enjoyed another beautiful day, ate lunch
in the sukkah, and then participated in a hands-on project. Parents and children, including
several siblings, learned about rules for making a sukkah, followed by pulling from the
ground, cleaning and carrying harvested corn stalks to be used for schach (the material put
on top of the sukkah, to make a partial ceiling that one can see through.)
That same morning, our fifth grade
families (the B’nai Mitzvah class of 2011) had
a kick-off session at BHC, to learn about
the Torah. Cantor Solomon led a discussion
about the books of the Torah and other
important information, and I then rolled
out the Torah once again, this time on a
long table, for students and parents to look
and ask questions about how it is written. It
was especially gratifying to have extremely
high attendance at this program, as this
year’s fifth grade families were the pilot
class for Etz Chaim when it began with only
fourth grade last year. The enthusiasm and
level of participation among these families
is a testament to the impact of Etz Chaim
and the importance of experiential, familybased
education.
All this over 48 hours! Imagine what will
happen in a year! I look forward to sharing
Torah Roll
more news as the project develops and
expands, and am happy to answer any questions in the meantime. Yashar koach to all our
families and staff for a great start to the Etz Chaim year!
YN Youth & Young Adult News
Much Dedication
For this midpoint in the academic year, I’d
like to simply give you all an update of what’s
happening with BHC’s youth and young adult
programs. JYGE has had three great events, most
recently a fun pie night for the junior youth
groupers and their families at the Dangerously
Delicious Pies store in Hampden. JYGE is having a really fun year so
far with great turnouts at events.
BHeCTY has also had several fun events, including an Open
Mic Night as well as a lunch & movie day. The BHeCTY Board has
done some great planning and is working hard on our mysterythemed
winter shul-in, December 5-6. Moreover, we have had
record attendance for BHeCTY at all of the NFTY regional events
this year.
Chai Life is BHC’s
great young adult social
group for ages 23-35.
Our kickball team had a
fantastic third season with
new team members and
solid victories. Java Jews
continues to bring in young
adults for great discussion
and dessert. And November saw the second Chai Society event, as a
select group of Chai Lifers enjoyed a subsidized meal at the quality
downtown restaurant Brewer’s Art.
The word “chanukah” means “dedication,” and it takes much
dedication to continue the mitzvah of helping those in need, and
committing to involve your children and teens in Jewish life. With
that in mind, I wish you all a very Happy Chanukah!
In Capable Hands
Am I the only one who thinks that December
comes more quickly each year? Our year has been
a great one so far—teachers are excited to teach, students walk in
with smiles and laughs, and our clergy are as energized as ever. I
could not be more proud of our school.
Many of you know that my husband and I are expecting twins
in the spring. Following Winter Break, I will be on leave through
my maternity leave, per my doctor’s orders. While I am sad to not
be able to participate in the day-to-day activities of the Religious
School or Congregation, I believe I am leaving you in capable
hands. Rabbi Debbie Pine will be stepping in as acting Principal
of the school while I am gone. With a lot of help from the rest of
Thank you to all who helped BHC donate an amazing 650 bags to the
GEDCO food pantry this year. Though the official High Holy Day Food
Drive won’t come again until September 2009, you may bring bags of
groceries to BHC on Friday, December 26, before Chanukah worship
or deposit non-perishable food items in the bin at the Hoffberger
DS Day School Doings
Oh, Chanukah!
Chanukah is a wonderful example of involving our children in experiences of the senses: seeing the light of the
candles, smelling the frying latkes, tasting their deliciousness, hearing the joyous singing, and feeling the warmth
of the holidays in every sense. One of the hallmarks of a 21st century education is giving students experiences that involve the senses
and wake the parts of the brain that relate to them. These sensory experiences inspire creativity, thought, and deeper understanding of
concepts. What better way to inspire growth than through celebrating meaningful Jewish days?!
Beginning with Grandfriends Day on November 25, The Day
School began a cycle of celebration and sharing. On that day
grandparents, other relatives and special friends were invited
to the school to spend time with the children, and to see them
perform some instrumental and vocal music, as well as some singalongs.
On Sunday and Monday, December 7 and 8, along with the
Sisterhoods’s Holiday Boutique, The Day School is sponsoring a
Jewish Childrens Book Fair. Please come and shop!
On Thursday, December 18 PTO Family Fun Night is a great
opportunity for children, their parents and family members to
enjoy themselves together in the spirit of the season. Finally, on
December 23, The Day School will have a Chanukah performance
at 3:15 pm. All are welcome at this event. Our children will be
participating in the Congregation’s Chanukah worship on Friday,
December 26, 7 p m.
And no celebration would be complete without thinking of
those who need our caring and tzedakah. The Day School is involved in many projects, including sharing with the residents of Slade
Mansion; collecting hats, gloves and scarves for the needy and collecting used eyeglasses to donate to those who need them.
Happy Chanukah to you and yours from all of us at The Day School!
Hoffberger Gallery
Lisa Rowley • Beeswax and Bamboo
Beginning November 27
through January, Lisa Rowley,
an encaustic and watercolor
artist, will be featured in the
gallery with her show “Beeswax
and Bamboo.”
Recently becoming immersed
in the world of encaustic
painting, water and nature play
a significant role in the artist’s
paintings. Encaustic painting
dates back 2,500 years and
Wild Horses © Lisa Rowley
was first used by the Greeks to
waterproof their ships. Later the Egyptians used it to paint portraits
on the Fayum mummy tombs. The word encaustic means to “burn
in” as heat is a necessary element when painting with beeswax.
Lisa mixes her own medium of beeswax and tree resin, and
then adds pigment and heat. She fuses the layers together with
a propane torch, which results in a shiny and smooth finish.
Intuitively and spontaneously, she creates patterns of nature with
translucent layers of color, sometimes adding sticks of bamboo or
carving leaves of ivy.
“I love the way the waxes melting together create unexpected
textures and a depth of imagery which is hard to duplicate with
other mediums. I find the possibilities of painting with this organic
material to be limitless.”
Mark your calendars for the artist’s reception on Sunday,
