WELCOME!

Welcome friends of Camp

Thunderbird and welcome

to those who are thinking

of giving their child(ren) a

great new experience this

summer. Because of great

staff returning and the new

experiences the campers will

have throughout the day, this

summer is shaping up to be

one of our best yet. When it

comes to camp at the Y we

feel it is so important to not

only provide campers with a

great experience, but to help

them become better people.

We will spend a great deal

of time and effort in building

character through daily

programs and an array of new

offerings that will give every

camper a reason to cheer.

I would like to say thanks

again for choosing Camp

Thunderbird. It will be my

personal mission this summer

to meet and exceed your and

your camper’s expectations.

Bill Nunez

Director, Camp Thunderbird

OUR STAFF:

THE BEST THING ABOUT

CAMP Thunderbird

Caring, attentive, nurturing, and fun-loving are just a few of

the qualities which make Camp Thunderbird staff the very

BEST! They are trained in the “Thunderbird Way,” and have an

inherent ability to easily connect with the youngest camper to

the oldest teen.

Many of our staff members attended YMCA Camps as

campers and we are thrilled that 70% of our staff return each

summer. Each summer begins in early June as staff members

participate in an active 7-day training program. Staff training

includes sessions on the stages of child development, camper

management, active games, safety procedures, and the tools to

be a successful counselor. In addition to three reference checks,

all Camp Thunderbird staff members complete a rigorous criminal

background check prior to being offered employment.

Who will Take Care of My Child?

Counselors

Each group of campers has two or three counselors depending

on campers’ age group. Counselors greet campers every

morning, participate with them at each activity period, support

the program specialists, provide encouragement while helping

them grow socially, emotionally, and physically each day.

Program Specialists/Unit Leaders

Our program specialists, made up of coaches and teachers,

provide a high level of instruction and personal attention.

Camp Thunderbird specialists ensure that each activity is safe

and learning-enriched. Our on-site health director and YMCA

certified Aquatics Staff are key members of the specialist

team.

Meet the Director

Bill Nunez, Director

of Camping and

Youth Experiences

Bill Nunez joined Camp

Thunderbird in 2009

as the Child Care

Director and is looking

forward to spending

another great Summer

with your children.

Bill spent 10 years

overseeing the Maplewood YMCA Day Camp before joining the

Thunderbird team.

Bill brings his wealth of knowledge and compassion to Camp

Thunderbird. He spends each day during the summer ensuring

that every camper is having fun and thriving, supporting staff,

and striving to exceed the expectations of Camp Thunderbird

families.

While camp location and activities have changed over the years,

Bill ensures that the same indescribable spirit that is created

each summer has remained. Bill looks forward to having your

family join him at one of our upcoming open houses.
