WELCOME!

I began my camp “career” as a shy nine year old

that was looking for a place to belong. The camp

I attended, much like Gorham, was filled with great

activities and wonderful facilities. But it was the

people, the staff and my cabin mates that grew

my confidence, widened my horizons, and filled

that session with special life-long friends. It has

been thirty-six summers and I have not missed

a summer at camp since. My family and I chose

to come to Camp Gorham in 2008 for just these

reasons; it is a community that provides friendship

and fun. Our mature staff put children first. Our

campers welcome new faces and rejoice at seeing

friends from summers past. It is truly a melting

pot of caring that leads to feverish fun at one of

the greatest outdoor locations in the U.S., the

Adirondacks. I invite every child to attend Camp

Gorham, whether you are on the

shy side, love the spot light or are

somewhere in between, everyone

belongs at Camp Gorham!

Anne Thornton,

Executive Director, Camp Gorham

EXPERIENCE

CAMP GORHAM

The Camp Gorham experience is based around

5 key elements:

1. Safety

All of our staff are fully trained in first aid and CPR and, along with

our 24/7 registered nurse, keep your child safe at all times. Gorham

is a safe environment, both physically and emotionally. Your camper

will be safe.

2. Friendship

Camp Gorham welcomes staff and campers from all around the world

and provides everyone with an opportunity to be themselves. Your

camper will make a new friend.

HOW TO FIND US:

265 Darts Lake Road

Eagle Bay, NY 13331

3. Adirondack Experiences

Whether hiking, biking, kayaking, camping out, or star gazing, every

camper receives ample opportunity to connect with the beauty of our

natural setting. Your camper will experience nature.

4. Character Development

The YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility

are at the forefront of everything we do. Your camper will grow as

an individual.

5. FUN!

This is a driving element of all that takes place at Gorham. Whether

your camper is on our jumping pillow, zip lining from our climbing

tower, water skiing on our lake, or enjoying the company of their

cabin mates, one thing is for certain, your camper will have fun!

OUR STAFF:

THE BEST THING ABOUT

CAMP GORHAM

Only the most caring, nurturing, passionate, creative and

responsible staff form the Gorham team. Our carefully selected

staff devote their summer to making your camper’s experience

unforgettable. Many of them grew up at Camp Gorham, giving

them first-hand knowledge of everything a camper goes through.

Our staff go through a rigorous training program starting long

before camp begins, culminating in a week of intense training

including sessions on stages of child development, camper

management, dealing with homesickness, and hours of specific

safety procedures. In addition to three reference checks, all

Camp Gorham staff members complete a criminal background

check prior to being offered employment.

WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF MY CHILD?

Cabin Counselors

Each cabin has two or three counselors depending on the age

group. Counselors remain with campers 24/7, ensuring all

campers’ needs are met including brushing teeth and changing

clothes!

Specialty Counselors

Chosen for their specialist background, these counselors provide

a high level of instruction and personal attention to campers

during specialty electives.

Area Directors

Our vastly experienced Unit Directors oversee campers and

staff within their area. Our Boys and Girls Unit Directors provide

direct communication to parents and constantly ensure all

campers are enjoying their experience.

Camp Nurse

Our Camp Registered Nurse lives on site and is available

throughout your camper’s entire stay. Located in our Health

Lodge in the middle of camp, our nurse administers all

medications and provides care to all campers. Additionally, all of

our staff is certified with a minimum of first aid and CPR.

MEET THE STAFF

James Waller, Summer Camp Director

Originally from England, James has 7

years of experience working at YMCA

camps in the USA while he has also ran

programs in England and has taught in

Europe. ‘My passion is in providing a

positive environment in which campers can be themselves,

build confidence, and make friends. Camp puts everyone on a

level footing which provides opportunities for all campers to

succeed’. James and his wife, Sarah, split their time between

Camp and Rochester.

Jackie Rudolph, Director of

Administration

Jackie has been at Camp Gorham since

2011 and she is often the first person

you will be in communication with while

registering for camp. Jackie lives locally at

the Stillwater Reservoir with her husband

Frank and their two children, Tyler and Emily, who both attend

Gorham as campers. She holds a degree in Accounting with a

paralegal certification. Please feel free to contact her year round

DAILY SCHEDULE

Camp Gorham offers a variety of summer camp programs

that are age and skill appropriate to meet the needs of our

campers. Explore the next few pages and find out which

camp experience is best for you!

CAMP GORHAM TRADITIONAL CAMP

For 50 years Camp Gorham has been providing memorable

experiences that last a lifetime!

Campers ages 7 – 16 who choose our Traditional Camp, can

build their summer however they like: attending camp from one

to eight weeks. Once at camp, campers are immersed in the

traditions of Camp Gorham including the spirit of the different

villages and the all the activities the beautiful property has to

offer.

Soon after arrival, campers learn about all the elective periods

offered and will rate class choices. Program Directors then

create a schedule for each camper that provides a wellbalanced

program with three electives of choice. In addition to

elective periods, campers will participate in a fun and creative

cabin activity, open waterfront time, and fantastic evening

program daily.

Small camper-to-counselor ratios and activity specialist-run

activities, allow campers to receive the attention and guidance

they need to guarantee success while swimming, rock climbing,

kayaking, playing sports, participating in arts and crafts, and

so much more.

FIRST TIME

CAMPERS

Choosing the right camp is a very exciting process, particularly

as a first time camper. At Camp Gorham we focus on ensuring

that every camper feels at home from the moment they register.

Once your camper arrives at camp, everything our staff team

does revolves around making sure that they have the most

unforgettable experience. We like to look at our camp as a

community.

Home Town

Everybody plays a part within the experience for the whole

camp. We gather together regularly as large groups and are

able to share energy and talents with each other.

Family

Our cabins are home base for campers, both in terms of space

but more importantly in terms of people. After each day, campers

always come back together in their cabin and participate in

Evening Embers, a chance to share their thoughts, feelings and

experiences.

Whether a first timer or a long time camper one thing remains

true above all: “Cabin mates for the summer, best friends

for life.”

Neighborhood

This is our village structure. Campers are assigned a village

(page 11) based on age and gender. Villages are a source of

great pride amongst campers and each have their own distinct

identity. Cabins within villages are located by each other.

OUR VILLAGES

MAKE US SPECIAL

Each of our villages has a distinct identity, with specific

cabins and colors assigned to them. Throughout the summer,

campers have many shared experiences within their village

but also aim to be the loudest and proudest within camp!

Campers are encouraged to bring clothing in their village

color to exhibit their pride.

SPECIALTY

PROGRAMS

HORSE BACK RIDING

With 1,500 acres of property, Camp Gorham offers campers

the chance to experience any number of horse trails.

Campers who register to take horseback riding as one of

their 3 electives will begin with riding lessons, building to

an extensive trail ride. Campers are grouped by ability level

with lessons being tailored to maximize the experience for

each camper.

Campers who do not choose this as an elective will still be

able to experience the horses either by assisting with barn

care or taking part in a scheduled cabin trail ride. All Big

Moose and Adirondack campers will participate in a cabin

trail ride during their stay.

Offered 4 days a week, separate registration and fee required.

GOLDEN HORSESHOE

Our wonderful team of 14 horses are expertly taken care

of by our ranch staff but they always welcome extra help.

Campers who chose to can wake up early and help bring the

team in from the pasture and get them fed, groomed and

ready for the day. The dedicated few that volunteer for this

everyday are awarded the Golden Horseshoe in recognition

of their efforts.

WATERSKIING

Whether you are looking to try for the first time or you are

looking to further enhance your skills, there is no better

place to waterski than on the beautiful Darts Lake. Our

experienced instructors will tailor their approach to the

level of your camper ensuring they get a memorable and

meaningful water-ski experience.

Requirements: Must be at least 13 years old

Offered 4 days a week, separate registration and fee required.

POLAR BEAR CLUB

Each morning, with mist in the air and Darts Lake smooth

as glass, the bravest campers and cabins head down to the

waterfront and participate in what Gorham campers have

been doing for 51 years – the polar bear plunge! Campers who

plunge every morning are awarded the polar bear certificate

but even if you only go once one thing is for sure, no Gorham

experience is complete without the polar bear plunge!
