Because of MetroHealth...means different things to different people depending 

on your experience with MetroHealth. For us, after celebrating MetroHealth’s 175th 

anniversary in 2012, we are proud to say that because of MetroHealth, life-long quality 

care continues to be available for the entire population of our region. 

One in every seven Cuyahoga County residents received care at MetroHealth in 2012. 

With our main campus and 16 health centers throughout Cuyahoga County, we offer 

the convenience of accessing care close to home. 

Because of MetroHealth, more than $797 million annually is infused into our regional 

economy, according to a recent Cleveland State University economic study. 

Because of MetroHealth, cutting-edge scientific research and medical education, 

supported in part by donors to The MetroHealth Foundation, continue to be at the 

forefront of health care here and around the world. 

In this Annual Report, you will see the facts and statistics that portray our 

commitment to our mission of saving lives, restoring health and promoting wellness.

I’m getting hugs and kisses again 

“When Alex was 20 months old, I was 

sensing that there might be something wrong. 

He didn’t speak at all and often seemed 

expressionless. I took him to MetroHealth to 

see a pediatrician, Dr. Maria Isabel Herran. 

She did a complete exam and referred us to 

Dr. Robert Needlman, a pediatric behavioral 

specialist. Of course, it was devastating to 

find out that Alex has autism. No one wants 

to hear that about their child, but we’ve come 

a long way since first getting the diagnosis. 

MetroHealth has helped me to understand 

Alex’s special needs and has taught me how 

to work with him. There already has been 

improvement. The biggest reward is when he 

looks at me, wraps his arms around me and 

gives me kisses. I call Dr. Herran ‘my angel.’”

I’m doing 50 laps three times a week 

“When I hobbled into MetroHealth and was asked 

how bad my back pain was, on a scale of one to 

ten, I said, ‘There’s no number I know of that’s 

high enough to measure this pain.’” Dennis was 

suffering from advanced scoliosis exacerbated by 

spinal stenosis. This painful pairing had sidelined 

Dennis from his previously active life. A complicated 

two-part neurosurgery performed by Michael P. 

Steinmetz, MD, rebuilt Dennis’s spine. “A few days 

after Dr. Steinmetz operated on me, I walked out of 

the hospital and told anybody who would listen, ‘My 

pain is a zero now,’ and that’s where it’s remained.”

I found my strength again 

“I was a physical therapist whose physical condition was 

deteriorating. I couldn’t uncurl my fingers, and my feet and 

arches hurt all the time. I was trying to help other people 

while I was wondering what was happening to me. After 

numerous tests, my doctor diagnosed hyperparathyroidism 

caused by a benign tumor on one of my glands. Unfortunately, 

during surgery, the location of the tumor couldn’t be found. 

Even though I live in another state, I was referred to Dr. 

McHenry at MetroHealth in Cleveland. Using sophisticated 

technology, he was able to find the elusive tumor and remove 

it. I started feeling much better within days. Today, because 

of MetroHealth and Dr. McHenry, not only am I doing physical 

therapy full time, but I’m also doing CrossFit*. I’m back!”

Life is an open canvas 

“I’m a working mom with a zest for life. But, it 

wasn’t always that way. For 15 years, I suffered from 

gynecological pain and extreme fatigue. I had lost my 

motivation – even my dogs knew I was miserable. 

It hurt to walk, and I couldn’t sit through my son’s 

sporting events. After visiting numerous gynecologists, 

it seemed I had tried everything. Finally, I went to 

Dr. Pollard, who explained every possible diagnosis and 

available procedure. Ultimately, an ultrasound followed 

by surgery confirmed that I had severe endometriosis. 

I had my minimally invasive hysterectomy at 

MetroHealth, stayed one night at the hospital, and 

within days was back to caring for my children 

and painting tapestries at work. Today, because of 

MetroHealth and Dr. Pollard, I am back to enjoying 

life and its many possibilities!”

I was walking among palm 

trees again last winter 

“I was stunned when an oncologist told me that I 

had a rare type of cancer in my liver, and it would 

not respond to chemotherapy or radiation. Luckily 

for me, my doctor referred me to Dr. Natalie Joseph 

at MetroHealth. Dr. Joseph told me that only about 

25 percent of the cases like mine are eligible 

for surgery. Again, I was lucky, and surgery was 

performed on January 25, 2012. I was in surgery 

for many hours, spent five days in intensive care, 

two days in a step-down unit and conscientiously 

did physical therapy at home for months. My latest 

scans and blood work showed no recurrence of 

cancer. If it weren’t for Dr. Joseph, her assistants 

and other staff at MetroHealth, I know I would not 

be here today.”

Linda and Larry November 

Mort and Iris November 

November Family Makes $1.5 Million+ Gift to MetroHealth 

In 2010, Mort and Iris November made their first gift to MetroHealth, a 

Hector Vega public art sculpture entitled “Grow Love,” dedicated in memory 

of Mort’s daughter, Debra Ann November. Committed to MetroHealth’s 

mission of increasing accessibility with additional health centers throughout 

Cuyahoga County, the November Family – Mort, Iris and Mort’s son and 

daughter-in-law, Larry and Linda – donated $1.5 million to The MetroHealth 

Foundation.

Robert and Lenore November 

Robert November, Mort’s brother, added a 

generous gift, in loving memory of his wife 

of 60 years, Lenore. In recognition of the 

generosity of the entire November Family, 

MetroHealth’s newest site is named 

the MetroHealth Middleburg Heights 

November Family Health Center. It will 

provide primary care, MetroExpressCare 

and multiple specialties. Larry November 

says, “I experienced the outstanding care 

provided at MetroHealth firsthand. We 

are pleased our gift will help others have 

access to such high-quality, compassionate 

care.” Robert November adds, “I wanted 

to do something meaningful in Lenore’s 

name. This is my opportunity to do 

something good for the benefit of other 

people, and it makes me feel good.” 

One of 16 neighborhood health centers, the MetroHealth Middleburg Heights 

November Family Health Center will open in July 2013. Its patient-centric design 

promises easy navigation in pleasant surroundings. From the ample free parking 

and electronic check-in kiosks to the state-of-the-art technology and comfortable 

exam rooms, this health center is the prototype for additional MetroHealth 

neighborhood centers in the future.

An esteemed physician’s work lives on 

A problem solver by nature, Brown M. Dobyns, MD, PhD, conducted 

research leading to the invention of the directional Geiger counter 

in the late 1940s and revolutionized the way thyroid disease was 

diagnosed. An internationally renowned thyroid surgeon, Dr. Dobyns 

began his career at MetroHealth in 1951 as Assistant Chief of 

Surgical Services and later became Associate Director of Surgery. 

For many years, he treated thyroid cancer victims in the Marshall 

Islands, utilizing his research to improve their lives. “His integrity 

and caring for individuals, his devotion to his career and his creative 

manner of thinking and discovering set him apart from others,” said 

his daughter M. Meredith Dobyns, MD. 

Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Dobyns served locally 

as president of the Cleveland Surgical Society and nationally as 

president of the American Thyroid Association. His local and national 

honors include being named to the Cleveland Medical Hall of Fame, 

The MetroHealth System Medical Hall of Honor and Who’s Who 

in America. When he was in his 40s, he became a full professor at 

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

annual lectures, in perpetuity, that will further the development of 

endocrinology and endocrine surgery. I feel it’s important for me to 

honor my father and to encourage others to carry on the work to 

which he devoted his life.”

Cancer care is gentler and kinder

The people on this page share a direct or indirect 

relationship to cancer, and the commitment to help. 

Their financial support means that cancer care at 

MetroHealth, already at a high level of expertise, 

will be enhanced by the creation of a more 

soothing patient environment. 

At the MetroHealth Cancer Care Center, 

a multi-disciplinary team delivers total cancer 

care under one roof. Advanced technology 

and expert medical care promise 

comprehensive and compassionate medical 

care. A renovated waiting room and healing 

garden would add a therapeutic effect. 

The Cancer Care Center’s Vision Advocacy 

Council (VAC), a volunteer group that 

increases philanthropic support, has taken 

on this cause as have several individuals. 

Together, they have raised over $270,000 for 

this effort. Whether it is a grateful patient, a 

thankful spouse or two young girls holding 

a bake sale “to help people with cancer,” 

each donor has a deeply personal reason for 

their connection, yet is improving care for 

many. As Timothy O’Brien, MD, Director, 

MetroHealth Cancer Care Center says, 

“This project allows us to address the 

intangible yet very real aspects of caring 

for the whole person.”

MetroHealth Salutes Dedicated Leaders 

Ron Fountain completed 16 years of service to The MetroHealth System Board of Trustees 

by leading as Chair from 2010 to 2013. During many changes and growth for the System, 

he was MetroHealth’s champion. His business acumen, especially regarding organizational 

change and finance, greatly contributed to MetroHealth’s accomplishments. We thank Dr. 

Fountain for his years of leadership, dedication and support. 

In 2012, William S. Gaskill retired from 32 years of service to The MetroHealth System 

Board of Trustees after leading as Chair, 1985-1990, and again, 2007-2009. He guided the 

hospital as it evolved to meet the health care needs of the community. He received the 

Edward F. Meyers Outstanding Trustee Award for distinguished leadership. Mr. Gaskill 

continues to deliver fine service to MetroHealth as a hospital volunteer. 

After 29 years of dedicated service, Donna Kelly Rego retired from The MetroHealth 

System Board of Trustees in 2012. As Chair from 1991 to 2007, she utilized her 

interpersonal skills to cultivate effective leadership and collaborative alliances, and steered 

MetroHealth through many complex transitions. We appreciate her tireless advocacy for 

MetroHealth and her dedication to our mission and patients. 

In December 2012, Mark Moran left his role as President and CEO, after serving beyond 

his initial contract. He led MetroHealth through a successful financial turnaround while 

delivering on the core mission of providing outstanding care for all. We are grateful for 

Mr. Moran’s leadership in directing the organization on a positive path of increased 

accessibility and sustainability, with operations in the black for five consecutive years.

An international authority on infectious diseases, Emanuel 

Wolinsky, MD, (1917-2012) turned his own personal battles 

with tuberculosis into an opportunity to conduct landmark 

research on drug therapies for the disease. Dr. Wolinsky’s 

work was so highly regarded that the International 

Working Group on Mycobacterial Taxonomy designated 

Mycobacterium wolinskyi in his honor. The Emanuel 

Wolinsky, MD, Society honors donors who have lifetime 

giving of $10 million or more.
