Critical Studies on Security
Editor: David Mutimer, York University, Canada
Security is one of the defining features of our, or
any, time. Collectively we seek security, value
security, desire security, while at the same time
often being troubled by the actions that are taken
in the name of our security. Critical Studies
on Security is an international, peer-reviewed
journal dedicated to the study of ‘security’ in and
through social critique. The journal aims to publish theoretically informed
scholarship, which engages with the practice and politics of security.
We welcome articles from or across the range of disciplines, and from
any of the critical social theoretical positions.
Critical Studies on Security publishes scholarship that has undergone
rigorous peer review, including an initial screening by the editors, and
recommendation by at least two anonymous reviewers.
Peacebuilding
Editors: Oliver P. Richmond,
University of Manchester, UK,
Roger Mac Ginty, University of Manchester, UK
Peacebuilding is an international, comparative,
multidisciplinary journal open to articles on
contemporary and historical cases. It will aim
to provide in-depth analyses of the ideologies,
philosophies, interests, and policies that underpin
peacebuilding programmes and initiatives, and to connect with debates
being held by policymakers, civil society personnel, scholars and
students. It will be open to quantitative and qualitative methodologies,
and will particularly welcome submissions that are prepared to challenge
orthodox views and add new empirical insights into debates. It will be
interested in contributions from the ‘subjects’ of peacebuilding, as well
as theoretical and methodological innovations (for example critical and
ethnographic work, whether on or in post-conflict societies, or on donors
and international actors). One of the themes the editors are interested in
is how the current peacebuilding paradigm produces political subjectivity,
and how this is responded to by the recipients of peacebuilding
operations. Rethinking approaches to peacebuilding is particularly crucial
if this area of study is to move beyond its current. Peacebuilding will
also periodically include reports on the work of major donors and the
Peacebuilding Commission, or other notable organisations in the field.
Over the last twenty years, the reshaping of world politics and the
development of military technologies has raised questions about the
efficacy of force in contemporary statecraft. Consequently, the field of
strategic studies is now of great significance. This journal takes a lead
in promoting fresh thinking in the field among practitioners and
“[T]he leading causes that seem to have sparked protests across the Arab
“ A NORTH KOREAN SPRING?”
“Washington should expect a rise in the prominence of anti-American
such anti-Americanism will be rivaled by hostility to Iran, which is seen
The Chinese Army Today
Tradition and Transformation for
the 21st Century
Dennis J. Blasko, Retired Military Intelligence
Officer and Foreign Area Officer, US Army
Series: Asian Security Studies
The Chinese Army Today is a comprehensive
study of the Chinese military, examining its ground
forces in a level of detail not found in any other contemporary works.
This new, revised edition has been fully updated to take account of
recent changes in the institution.
In 1999, the military modernization program of the Chinese People’s
Liberation Army increased in intensity and achieved a focus not seen in
the previous two decades. Based primarily on actual Chinese sources,
this book details these changes and puts them in the context of the
many traditions that still remain. Written by a retired professional military
officer who has served in China, the text uses first-hand observation of
the Chinese military and three decades of military experience to weave
many disparate threads from official Chinese statements, documents,
and media reports into an integrated whole. The author also conducts
an in-depth exploration into the many forces that constitute the People’s
Liberation Army.
The Routledge Handbook
of Terrorism Research
Edited by Alex P. Schmid, Terrorism Research
Initiative, Vienna, Austria
“Alex Schmid has produced a book that
is extraordinary in its scope and
painstakingly comprehensive in its synthesis
of knowledge and experience of terrorism
research. His 1988 book Political Terrorism
long occupied a cornerstone position as one of the few absolutely
essential core texts for every terrorism researcher.
The Routledge Handbook of Terrorism Research has surpassed
even that. Whether you are a novice or an expert, this is simply a
must-have source for every serious terrorism researcher.”
– John Horgan, Penn State University, USA
“A prodigious effort to bring together the collective wisdom of
experts from around the world [...] an invaluable resource to
students, scholars and policy makers, this new volume should
be the starting point of every serious student of the subject.”
