Greetings Nobles and Ladies,
Let me start by saying thank you to
everyone who worked so hard to make
Shrine Hospital Benefit Days a
big success! This is why we are
Shriners, helping our children and
funding our Hospitals! Thank
you again.
May is upon us and that means parade season is
here. So shine up those cars and the train, and tune
up the instruments. Let’s have a great parade season
and have some fun.
Now it is time for the good news! In the month of
April we brought in at least 10 new Nobles, which
means we are having a party! So come on out and
celebrate your hard work, well done Nobles!
Saturday May 5th is our spring ceremonial;
Illustrious Sir Ralph Joos is our class honoree. So
come out and enjoy the day. The Ritualistic Divan
will perform the ceremony and of course we have the
second section which you don’t want to miss. So let’s
bring out those new candidates and fill the room for
illustrious sir Ralph.
Don’t forget Shrine Bowl and Soccer classic are next
month. Also CSSA is early this year August 9-12 so
get your reservations made.
Once again I want to thank you all for working
hard to make Tangier the best it can be! We have
had some fun this year and there is more to come.

The next Bloodmobile at Tangier will be on Monday May
14, 2012 from Noon until 6:00 pm. As I said in a recent letter
we want to try to have donors each hour during the drive so
that there will not be too much down time for the Red Cross
personnel. If we are to continue to have Bloodmobiles we must be
fair to all parties.
We have a new Red Cross recruitment representative. Her name is
Julie Oliverius. We have met and come up with some new ideas that
we will put into effect in May. We will fill you in on the details later.
For some time I have tried to determine how much Blood is used
at the Shrine Hospital in Minneapolis for surgery on our kids. Julie
wrote to the Red Cross in Minneaplis and discovered that they do not
get any needed blood from the Red Cross. I will try to find out from
our Hospital staff or from our Board representatives if they can get
this information. This may help us meet future quotas and get new
donors.
We have not met our goals for over one year. I hope that we can
change that starting on May 14. Let me know if you will be donating
in May so that we can give you the time that fits into your schedule.

Arab Patrol

Thanks to all those that came to our
Redneck Rib Feed and helped make it a
success. It was a sellout and we hope that
you enjoyed it as much as we did bringing
it to you.
As the month of May is Mother’s Day and
most of our Ladies are mothers, we would
like to extend a huge and heartfelt thanks
to these Ladies as they have gone above
and beyond for the Arab Patrol in addition
to all their other tasks and responsibilities.
We have called on them often in the last few
weeks and they have responded every time.
It began with the Circus where our Ladies
were there every session selling tokens. In
March they showed up to make thousands
of cookies for St. Pat’s Day and yes, the
Cookie Lady is also an Arab Patrol lady.
On St Patrick’s Day, the Arab Patrol and
our Ladies took the entire first shift, with
many staying to help the entire day. The
last day of March found our Ladies helping
serve dinner for the Pheasants Forever
organization. One week later they gathered
again to work the dining room during the
Redneck Rib Feed Dinner. Their next job
found them decorating for Tangier’s April
stated meeting and making the treats for the
Ladies meeting. They did all of this without
a complaint and as of the writing of this
article, I have not heard of one divorce due
to the heavy workload. It is very true to say
we couldn’t have done it without you and
gosh, we are glad we married you.
Chanters

On April 28, 2012, the
Chanters were one of several different live
music and entertainment acts at a fundraiser
supporting the expenses and treatment of
Isaac Barchus, son of Steven Barchus. The
event was hosted by the Scottish Rite Valley
of Omaha. This fundraiser helped support
their continued medical and living expenses
for Isaac.
We were also practicing for other events
this spring. On May 5 at 4:00 pm, the Tangier
Shrine Chanters will sing with the Abou
Bekr (Sioux City) Chanters in a concert to
be held at the Omaha Scottish Rite Masonic
Center. There is no charge for this “Spring
Concert,” but a free-will donation will be
collected to support the Tangier Shrine
Transportation Fund. These same two units
will give another concert on May 6 in Sioux
City, IA. This 2nd concert will be at 4:00
pm at the First Presbyterian Church (608
Nebraska St in Sioux City IA). This concert
is also free and open to the public.
On Friday, June 1, 2012, at 7:00 pm, the
Tangier Shrine Chanters will perform for
Amber Star Chapter OES at an Iowa Grand
Chapter visitation. It will be held in the town
of Quick, IA, which is a small town (not on
the state map). This illustrates that there are
often Masonic family events, and if you want
us to sing at such events, requests should be
received early to verify our availability. Just
contact any Chanter or leave a message at
the Shrine Center.
We will always welcome new members.
Any man with a joy for singing who is
interested in joining us should contact any
Chanter or stop by on the 2nd, 4th, and
5th Mondays around 7:30 pm at the Shrine
Center. That’s my update for May.

Can you believe it is the middle of April?
That means our annual Shrine Bowl game
is less than 2 months away. Preparations
for the game are in full swing. The date
of the 2012 game is June 2nd. Due to the
construction going on at Memorial Stadium,
the time for the game has been moved up to
a 1:30 pm kickoff. This is because the lights
at the stadium will not be put back up yet.
The positive change in all of this, is it moves
the start of the game closer to the parade
time of 10:00 am in the Havelock area of
Lincoln. So, I would encourage all Nobles to
attend the parade and then make your way
to Memorial Stadium to support the premier
High School All-Star Football Game in the
state of Nebraska.
Also, just around the corner is our players
banquet on May 6th. Dinner is served at
6:00 pm. If your club or unit is sponsoring
players, please be sure to contact the office
and let Sandy know how many are coming.
The Shrine Bowl players will report to camp
on May 25th, and the following week both
teams will make the annual trip to a Shrine
Hospital. This year, the teams will again be
traveling to the St. Louis hospital. Because of
the great cost of the flight, we are asking for
your help to sponsor our players and coaches
through the annual Flight Crew. The cost for
one round trip ticket is $300 per player and
coach. We need your support. If you could
see the faces of the players after they return
from that trip, it is priceless. The opportunity
it gives our athletes to see what our Hospitals
do for kids cannot be replaced. It shows
them what the game is all about, what they
are playing for, and our hope is that it will
someday encourage these young men to
become Masons and join the Shrine. I can tell
you from personal experience, it is the sole
reason I have become a Shriner, and it has a
great impact on these young men. So, please
consider sponsoring a flight, a half of a flight,
or simply make a donation for a portion of
the flight. Any help you can give would be
much appreciated.
Lastly, the annual player’s banquet before
the game will take place at the Lancaster
Events Center in Lincoln the night before
the game at 6:00 pm on June 1st. The more
Nobles we have there the better, so please
contact Ronell at the Shrine Bowl office for
ticket information. See you at the game.

Daughters
of the Nile

Our first Stated Session was held on
Thursday, April 5th at 1:00. We had a
delicious lunch at noon prepared by our
Caterer this year, Pam Schultz. The officers
did a great job at their first Session, thank
you so much. Chorus sang “Easter Parade”
and they all wore their very special bonnets.
They are always coming up with surprises
for all of us to enjoy. Many of the Units and
Clubs gave their annual reports. It is amazing
how busy they were throughout the year with
various activities. This will be another fun
year full of activities.
On May 2, at 6:30 in the Main Room, the
Supreme Princess Badoura Marsha Sowers
will be in Omaha to talk to Sat-ra about the
Supreme Session, which will be held June
1-5, 2014 in Omaha. Marsha has requested
all the committee chairs and those Ladies
that want to volunteer please attend. Hosting
Supreme is such a special event. All of the
Daughters can also really get involved and
become a volunteer for the big event in 2014.
To those Ladies that work during the day,
we will have our May Session, on May 3th
in the evening. Dinner will be at 6:00 pm,
and Stated Session at 7:00 pm. Please call
in your reservations by Monday, April 30 to
Margaret Kirby at 402-343-1801, or Ramona
Artherton at 402-334-2294. We would like to
see all of you at dinner. Also in May, we will
be installing new Ladies at our Ceremonial
on Saturday May 26th, with lunch at noon,
and the Ceremonial at 1:00. We will also be
honoring our Past Queens, and encourage
them to wear their Supreme outfit.
This year Supreme will be in Portland,
OR, from June 8th to the 15th, 2012. The
Pageantry & Dancers Unit will also be going
to this beautiful city to perform. The Portland
Rose Festival will be held on Saturday before
Supreme begins. Everyone that has gone to
this event in the past said it was awesome.
Over 400 tickets were sold to the Daughters
of the Nile to attend this spectacular event.
Later in June, in Omaha, the Garden Club
will sponsor the 5th Annual White Rose
Garden Walk on Sunday, June 24th, from noon
to 5:00 pm, rain or shine. Contact one of the
co-chairs Renee Herschlag at 402.213.5701,
or Jean Carey at 402.697.8813 for tickets. All
ticket proceeds go directly to Daughters of
the Nile Foundation that directly supports the
Shriners Hospitals for Children.

First of all, I would like to both welcome
and congratulate our newest members of
the Directors Staff. Dave Hoffman and his
Lady Linda, Roger Edgar and his Lady
Mary, and Nathan Larson and his Lady
Judith were voted in at our March meeting.
We look forward to having you all around.
We made it back safe and sound from our
annual Shrine Directors convention. It was
held in San Antonio, Texas this year. We
had a great time and represented Tangier in
the best way as per usual. We had a pretty
good showing in the stunt competition this
year and finished in sixth place out of about
50 entries. Considering three of the stunts
that finished ahead of us were from Texas
and they brought really big and elaborate
stunts in on trailers, I’d say we did a pretty
good job. For those of you that haven’t
been to a SDA convention, you should
really consider it next year. It’s a great way
to meet Shriners from all over the country
and Canada and is just a great time. Kerbela
Shrine is hosting it next year in Knoxville,
Tennessee.
It’s hard to believe but the spring
ceremonial is already upon us. The
Directors Staff is well prepared for another
great Hot Sands. We hope to have a good
turnout this year. Come on out and support
the new Nobles. It means a lot more if they
have a good crowd cheering them on. The
spring ceremonial falls on May 5th this
year.
With spring ceremonial brings parade
season. The first parade is May 12th. The
hearse is running good and ready to roll. I
can’t wait to get the first parade under our
belt. With all of the new members to the
Directors Staff, it looks to be a great parade
season.
The Staffettes are once again taking care
of the silent auction at the Show and Shine
June 3rd. They are looking for donations of
items that can be either placed on the silent
auction table or used for raffles. Let the
office know if you have something that can
be used. This is a Shrine fundraiser and any
help would be greatly appreciated.
I am sorry to say that once again I have
to report a member of the Directors Staff
that was visited by the black camel. Bob
Dawson passed away last month. He was
a long time member of the Shrine and
Directors Staff and will be greatly missed.
Golden Girls

The month of May, the remembrance month
has arrived: Mother’s Day on the 13th, Armed
Forces Day the 19th, and Memorial Day on
the 28th. And, of course, May Day on the 1st.
Do you remember those May Day baskets you
made from an out-of-date sample wallpaper
book or colored construction paper, then filled
them with popcorn, candy, or a wildflower? I’ll
bet some of you do.
Golden Girls monthly luncheon meeting will
be held at Noon, Tuesday, May 8. Same place -
lower level (Oasis room) of the Shrine Center.
Courtney Nelson and Audrey Stalder will serve
as hostesses. Happy Birthday to Bessie Dick,
Dorothy Hallgrimson, Muriel Springer, Sally
Swancutt, and Lu Williams. May good things
find their way to these ladies during the coming
year.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in every country,
however not always at the same time each year.
This celebration began with the Greeks and
Romans.
Armed Forces Day is the special day of the
Year to honor members of the military services.
Remember to say “thank you” to those you
know who are serving, or have served, in the
military.
Memorial Day means many things. A holiday
from work for many and a day for a family get
together. A day to pause and remember our
loved ones who are no longer with us. A day to
decorate their graves with flowers. The reason
for its other name - Decoration Day. A day to
fly Old Glory and a day to remember the fallen.
A day to honor those who have made sacrifices,
sometimes the ultimate sacrifice to protect our
freedoms.
Enjoy yourself and count your blessings. Bye

Benefit Days

For the most of us, April 27 and 28 was
our annual standout-in-front-of-local-stores
days by either collecting money or bringing
awareness of Shriners Hospitals for Children
to the community. Some locations will have
collections 1 week or 2 weeks later. This
is our time to tell the world about Shriners
Hospitals for Children. On behalf of Jerry
Nielsen, Loren Kastanek and me, we thank
everyone who contributed their time and
efforts to making this a successful year.
We will tabulate the results and get back
to you.
Thanks to all the Nobles and Ladies for all
your help. This infectious enthusiasm is what
is so great about Tangier.

At the writing of this newsletter Parade
Chairman Randy Busse and his committee are
feverishly working on the new trailer (Float)
hoping to be ready for the Florence Parade on
May 12. The Float will ride 8 to 10 Greeters
and our favorite music (Elvira)! We will need
volunteers with a truck or SUV with a hitch to
pull the Float. Sign-up sheets for truck/SUVs
and for riders will be available at the May 8
Business meeting so that we will have a full
Float at each Parade. Remember this is our last
regular meeting until September.
Tangier’s stated meeting is May 10. We will
need Greeters at both doors in fatigues at 5:15
pm. The Bloodmobile will be at Tangier on
May 14. Call to make your reservation.

Clowns

I’m back again, well we started off the
month of April on a good and bad note. Our
Brother Charlie Kubrick was diagnosed with
Lou Gehrig’s disease, so when the klowns
were asked to help out at his fundraiser, I had
no doubt that we would have volunteers for
this gig, thank you to “Skids” and “Fab-U-
Luss”, we had a good time at a serious event,
GOD BLESS CHARLIE.
The three of us went north on Easter
weekend to help Zaha’s Easter egg hunt, Fab
u luss made a good impression, it was fun for
all. I myself could not have been more proud
to be a Mason and Shriner, Zaha does such
wonderful work in the community.
Friday the 13th we three headed south to
Wichita, Kansas for a CSSCA klown college.
We learned so much my head is still spinning,
can’t wait to pass on the knowledge at our
next klown college. “Skids” will be setting it
up soon, we will send out e-mails.
Shrine hospital benefit days was a success,
we were a little lite in in our unit overall for
volunteers, but our new klowns and their
Ladies stepped up for the unit, thank you so
much.
Thank you for all you do, so lets get out and
make some kids smile.

Howdy Cuzins! How ya’ll doin? I want to
take a minute to thank everyone that showed
up for the Hillbilly meeting in April. It was
great to get to see some of you cuzins. Looks
like most of ya’ll “wintered” pretty well.
Congratulations to everyone that helped out
with the Shrine Hospital Benefit Days. What
a great effort by all the Nobles and Ladies
of Tangier. Great work everybody. Let’s
keep the momentum going as we move
into parade season. I don’t know about you
all, but I am gettin excited about this here
paradin! I know only a few cuzins paraded
last season, but those that did had a blast.
We got a lot of cheers from the crowd too! It
would be great to see us increase the number
of parading cuzins this year.
Spring is in the air and that can only mean
one thing. It’s time to do us an Initiation
Ceremony! We are tentatively looking at a
Spring Ceremonial date of Saturday, May
19th! It will be held at Ralph and Judy’s
hideout by Springfield. Their address is just
a few minutes down the road at - 13601
Fairview Road, Springfield, NE. We will
start the registration around 5:00 p.m. The
initiations will start about 6:00 p.m. So
plez mark your calendars and help get the
word out to all of our Shrine friends that
ain’t cuzins yet. Let your non–cuzin friends
know about the great things the hillbillies
do for the hospitals and transportation fund.
Make sure to tell all your friends that this
degree also includes the Ladies too! So dust
off your finest duds and come on out to the
ceremony! And bring a candidate with you.
We are still looking for help with things
like the food and refreshments, registration,
degree work and country store. My Gran
Pappy said “many hands make light work”
so please think about helping with one
of these areas. It’s a great time for sure. It
would really be helpful if you would send
either Cheryl Wonder in the office or me
an email xpressin your interest and what
committee you would like to help.
We have lots more stuff planned, so keep
an eye on the Hot Sands or computer mail. If

Tangier Pirates

Ahoy Mates, it’s time to think about the
Night at Tortuga, May 12th at the Tangier
Shrine Center and all the fun to be had by
all that attend. Haven’t determined if we will
have a plank to walk but there will be the
famous Pirates Punch and the chicken this
year will be right off the barbie. Yes this year
we are deviating [a path often taken] from the
normal rotisserie chicken to take a more pirate
approach and have barbecued chicken. There
will be a lot of fun for all at the 2012 Night
at Tortuga. Everyone is encouraged to come
in costume but ye’ll not suffer the plank if
ye decide to come dressed as a Land Lubber.
The frivolity will start with drinks at 6:00 pm
with dinner at 7:00 and will go until 11:00 pm
when the DJ is thrown overboard. You get all
of this for just $15/person or $100/table of 8
and you are assured of having an even better
riotous time. Of course you’re welcome to
stick around and fish for bodies still floating
near the ship until midnight when all good
Pirates will grab a Wench and head for cover.
We always have room for more Pirates at
our Pirate Cove where we gather at 6:30 pm
on the third Monday of each month.
Captain Roy wants all the Ol’ Pirates to
gather back at the ship next week so we can
introduce you to all the new Pirates.

First off I would like to say a big thank
you to Brother Jim Sklenar for arranging and
presenting an excellent program at our last Past
Masters dinner. For those of you that missed it
you missed a very interesting and informative
program on the drug problem in Omaha and
surrounding area. There were so many questions
asked and answered that Jim finally had to call
for the last question. Thanks again Jim for your
very interesting program. We really appreciate
your willingness to help us out.
Our next meeting will be our steak fry at
Cooper Farms on July 8th. Time and details
will follow as they become available. Our
program will be on the Shrine Hospitals. This
will be an evening of fun, good food and a
very informative program on our Hospitals.
Supporting our Hospitals for the children that
need our help is why we have fun. That is what
Illustrious Sir Greg’s motto is this year “Fun
with a Purpose”.
Our fall meeting is still to be determined.
We will get the information out as it becomes
available. Watch the Hot Sands for details as
they come available. Our Christmas party is
scheduled for December 15th at the Shrine.
Mark this date in your calendars as this is a very
busy time of year.

What a time we had at the Jailhouse Rock
party! The theme this year was Pajama Jam,
and I can’t imagine a more comfortable
way to party than in your PJs, right? What a
blast. Thanks to everyone who came out for
an evening of fun, and to all you Kops and
Kuties for the work you put in.
The fun’s not over yet though people - it’s
Parade Season! The Paddy Wagon has had
some tender loving care over the winter and
it should be ready to roll out onto the streets
of Florence on May 12th, and then it’s on to
Council Bluffs on the 19th. Let’s kick the
parade season off right and show up in force
boys! You know you love it!
Also, let’s all sign up for CSSA. It’s a bit
earlier this year, so let’s get our reservations
in early. Last year was the year of “three”,
but let’s make this year’s CSSA “ONE” to
remember!
And remember, if anything goes wrong,
we can always blame it on Newton.
“NOW HEAR THIS” Parade
season is officially here. Our
first parade is May 12th in Florence. Line
up at 12 noon, step off at 1300. May 19th, in
Council Bluffs, 0930 line up and 1030 step
off. BRAVO ZULU to Brother Russ Lambert
for his continued leadership on the SHBD
at the C.B. Walmart, and BRAVO ZULU
to the galley crew and Baker’s Table who
volunteered their time and talents at Biscuits
and Gravy on April 15th. Great Work.
Plan For The Man: Shrine Bowl Dinner
on May 6th, Lady Debbie and I will be there
to meet and greet the two players and their
parents. DON’T forget Mother’s Day! May
13th. Find something special to do with your
Lady that day. Memorial Day is May 28th.
Flag Crew should muster at the Shrine Center
at 0900 for set up. Take Down TBA.
Looking ahead, Shrine Bowl is scheduled
for June 2nd. so keep your calendars clear
that day. We’ll have a outstanding time in
Lincoln. As mentioned in earlier Hot Sands
articles, CSSA is scheduled for August 8th
in Cedar Rapids, IA. Great Fellowship and a
Great weekend for you and your Lady.

membership, President Richard is working
on a father and son going through the
degrees of Masonry together and then into
the Shrine. Our President is also working to
bring three current Masons into Tangier.
On Tuesday evening April 17 Mo-Ri
hosted our second Tangier Past Potentate’s
recognition dinner at Anthony’s Steak
House in Omaha. It is quite an honor to
break bread in the presence of men and
brothers representing five decades of Tangier
leadership.
If you have not heard let me be the first to
share with you that Mo-Ri is now a parading
Club. During our March meeting those in
attendance voted to accept an offer on a
1917 Stutz kit car from a current Tangier
member. Mo-Ri is looking forward to being
a part of future Tangier parade schedules.
We will also use the vehicle as a promotional
opportunity when serving our two yearly
breakfasts and collections during Hospital
Benefit Days.

Nineteen Tangier Road
Runners made ten trips to the Minneapolis
Hospital in March, ferrying eleven patients.
Another nineteen patients travelled to
Hospitals by private transport, and one
patient was flown to a Hospital.

L. Poffenbarger, B. Somerville, R. Howell,
S. Turner, R. Stoffers, H. Fouts, J. Frost, C.
Sohm, J. Gathman, M. Burke, R. DeWell,

volunteered their time for Shrine Hospital
Benefit Days. I especially appreciated the
quick responses from Jim and Dee Marshall,
Don and Joyce Kaye, Dave Krecek, Paul
Mason, Lauren Faist and Carl Highman to
help me staff the Baker’s Store and to ensure
that our time slots were filled.
Please keep your Saturdays open during the
month of May, as the Famous Tangier Shrine
Band has been summoned for performances.
It’s hard to believe that PARADE SEASON
starts in less than two weeks. But before we
march at the Florence parade, we have been
asked to perform at the Oak Ballroom in
Schuyler, NE on May 5. The Oak Ballroom
is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee on that
day. Not only has the Oak Ballroom been
the Oasis for the Schuyler Parade for many
years, but was a frequent site for Tangier
Band Member, Marlyn Grubbs and his
Internationally Famous “Marlyn Grubb’s
Band”.
Parades this Month: Florence - May 12;
Council Bluffs - May 19. Please let me know
in advance which parades you can march, so
we can plan our instrumentation. Hopefully
our “Snowbirds” will be back in the
Heartland to perform with us cold-weather
masochists. Please notify Yours Truly if you
want to carpool to the parades.
The Tangier Band is always looking
for marching band instrumentalists, and
especially a cymbal player. If interested,

attend a band practice on the 4th Thursday
of the month. (Next practice is May 24, 7:00
pm at Tangier.)

The first order of business is to introduce
our newest member Scott Clark and his Lady
Andrea, he is the proud owner of a 57 Chevy.
Our meeting was at Milllard Roadhouse, and
we did get him broken in. We’re all hoping he
won’t go running now that he knows we are all
crazy. We had quite the turn out: Captain Larry
and Peg, Me and Rosemary, Gene and Sandy,
Les and Marie, Brandon, Secretary Ron, Steve,
and Scott Clark. Divan Representative Oriental
Guide Charlie Marchand and his lady Connie
were in attendance. Charlie brought greetings
from Illustrious Sir Greg Hadcock and thanked
all for their Corned Beef and Cabbage support.
Charlie was quite through with all the events
happening at the Shrine, he definitely keeps us
in the know.
The time has come for Hospital Days, April
27-28. Motor A has the Hy-Vee on 72nd and
Peony Park. Lots of volunteers, we will all
have a good time.
The great fun events are upon us THE
PARADE SEASON, the schedule is out and
the first parade will be Florence with a noon
line up. Our engines are revving, the gas tanks
are full, the cars “a” shining, and hopefully
everyone has thier keys. Hopefully no mishaps
during the parades, and “The Car Report” is
light this year.
The April birthdays are Steve and Micah
24th, Kelley 28th, and Brandon the 30th. The
April Anniversaries are Al and Carole 20th and
Ron and Tami 30th. Congrats to both!
The May 7th meeting will once again be at
the Millard Roadhouse. Our June 4th meeting
will be hosted at Captain Larry and Lady Peg’s
home.

We just had our Hamburger night, and

Sunday April 22nd Bill and Colleen
German hosted our annual car inspection at
his shop. We will have more about that next
month. If you were not able to bring your car
for inspection please copy your insurance and
registration and send it to me at the Shrine or
fax it to me at 431-7773. We cannot allow
a car to parade without having insurance
paperwork delivered to the club and the club
will provide it to Tangier.
Hospital Benefits Days was held April 27th
and 28th and President Fred wants to thank
all members who participated.
The Spring Ceremonial is Saturday May
5th, and Sunday May 6th is the Shrine bowl
player°Øs dinner.
The Ladies will be having potluck for their
May meeting.
