Special Thanks to
Welcome to the campus of St. Pius X Catholic High School.
We are happy to have you here with us and to celebrate the
talents of our student athletes. We are grateful for them and to all
who participate in making our athletic programs so successful.
St. Pius is justifiably proud of its great athletic tradition, the
manner in which our young athletes bring honor and distinction
to themselves, their families and to our school. We continue
to be honored each year by the Georgia Athletic Directors
Association for placing among the elite programs in our respective
classification. Our prayer is that the lessons and discipline learned
through participation in athletics will enable our young people to
develop their potential to the fullest.
We are also very proud of the relationship over the years with the
fine schools with whom we compete. We wish to issue a special
welcome to the visitors from other schools and to all returning
St. Pius alumni and their families. Your presence, support and
encouragement are a continuing reflection of your commitment
to your school.
®
I hope you enjoy your visit to our campus. We all look forward to
another successful year for the St. Pius athletic program.
Welcome to St. Pius X Catholic High School!
Whether you are a Golden Lion fan, or a fan of the visiting team,
we know you will enjoy tonight’s contest. High school athletics
are special. This is competition at its purest form. The young
men and ladies who perform here tonight will do so because of
their love of their sport, their commitment to their school, their
commitment to their friends, and because they love the thrill that
“competition” offers them.
We are very proud of our athletic program here at St. Pius X.
Over 82% of our students participate in the program. Last year
21 of our 22 varsity teams advanced to the state playoffs. We
as a community were very proud that we were awarded the
Georgia High School Association Region 5-AAA Sportsmanship
Award. These offer confirmation of the hard work and spirit of our
students, our coaches, our parents, and our alumni. We are also
very proud and thankful of the relationships we have developed
over the years with the schools with whom we compete. We,
along with all of these schools, work hard daily to better each
and every child entrusted to us.
I hope you enjoy this contest and visit our beautiful campus
often. Now sit back, cheer for your team, and enjoy the game!
St. Pius X Catholic High School
St. Pius X Catholic High School opened its doors
in September 1958 as the first high school of the
newly established Diocese of Atlanta. Under the
leadership of our first principal, Fr. James Harrison,
his staff of 22 teachers, and 418 students, the
school quickly developed a unity and spirit
all its own. That unity and spirit has grown and
developed over the past 53 years to what it is
today as we enter this eleventh year of leadership
under our principal, Mr. Steve Spellman, and a
staff of over 130 people serving the needs of
over 1,000 students.
While the spirit of our students has remained
constant since 1958, our campus has undergone
many changes. In 1964, the stadium, which is now
known as George B. Maloof Stadium, was built, and
in 1975 our gym, the John Paul II Activities Center,
was completed. Both of these facilities were built
and funded by our parents and the Athletic
Association. In 1985, through funds received from
a capital campaign by the Archdiocese, a major
construction effort added our current library, a
performing arts center, and new classrooms.
Also at that time, the George Sattele Track
was converted from the old style cinders to the
current latex surface. In 1992, the field house,
known as the Lions’ Den, was razed and the
present Donnellan Center was built to serve
two purposes. The rear of the building includes
expanded locker rooms, a training room, a
weight room, and coaches’ offices. The front
portion houses our Development and Alumni
offices. In 1998, St. Pius X completed its second
major change with the completion of the
Science and Math wing, an auxiliary gym, and
renovations in Maloney Hall. These renovations
included moving our Guidance and Campus
Ministry Offices into new suites, the expansion
of the art room, and the establishment of
three computer labs along with new paint,
lighting and new carpeting throughout the
entire school.
about our school

G O L D E N L I O N S
Further major improvements were completed
during the 2004-2005 year with a new arts wing
and renovated stadium and cafeteria.
The 2007-2008 school year witnessed the
celebration of St. Pius’ 50th year. The yearlong
celebration included Mass in the stadium and
a carnival to open the school year on the feast
day of St. Pius X; a grand homecoming and
reunion weekend extravaganza in the fall; the
“Golden Gala” auction and dinner in February;
and a May graduation which included the return
of members of the first graduating class. Most
recently, the Seaver Family Sports Complex was
completed through the Expanding Our Legacy
Capital Campaign. The complex features a
baseball diamond and a practice field with
cutting edge synthetic turf surfaces. This addition
is the first land expansion the school has seen
since it’s opening in 1958. The campaign is still
underway and will continue until the remaining
$2.2 million is raised.
program offered at our school. St. Pius is
committed to excellence in all aspects
of its program. Our academic program
is outstanding and challenges a broad
spectrum of student abilities. Approximately
99 percent of our graduates have continued
their education at many of the finest colleges
and universities all over America. St. Pius is
also home to many achievements in other
areas, from state championships in athletics
to wonderful performances in the arts, to
accolades for our efforts in journalism and
debate. We are very proud of the multiplicity of
extracurricular activities in which our students
are involved.
The success of our school is due to its community
of faith. The future of St. Pius X will continue to
flourish because of that faith which lives in the
heart of its community.
The face of our campus has changed, but the
spirit of the Golden Lion remains strong and vibrant
in this community. A rich program of activities
complements the strong and comprehensive
about our school
St. Pius X Catholic High School
MISSION STATEMENT
St. Pius X, an archdiocesan high school, provides a college
preparatory education for the formation of the mind,
body and spirit of each student in accordance with the
teachings of the Catholic Church.
VISION STATEMENT
To form students of strong character and deep faith who
complete college, serve others, and participate actively
in the life of the Church.
OUR VALUES
Supernatural Vision: We foster the growth of good human
beings who love God and neighbor and thus achieve
their eternal destiny of heaven through the teachings of
the Catholic Church.
Centrality of Christ: We are founded on Jesus Christ the
Redeemer who, through His Incarnation, is united with
each person and is both the model and means for
personal holiness.
Community: We are a community of persons bound
by the Catholic Faith who recognize our school as an
extension of the intimate atmosphere of family life.
Teamwork/collaboration among administrators, faculty,
and parents for the school’s common good
Interaction of students and teachers which is a dialogue
and not a monologue Physical environment that has
amenities that create a pleasant family atmosphere
Integral Education: We aim to develop the intellectual,
physical, psychological, moral and religious capabilities
of every student.
Truth: We seek to teach not merely knowledge but
understanding, wisdom and truth. Human beings can
grasp the truth of things, and in grasping that truth
can know their duties to God, themselves, and their
neighbors.
PRAYER OF ST. PIUS X
O Lord Jesus Christ, let Your passion be my strength to
sustain, guard, and protect me. Let Your wounds be my
food and drink to nourish, fill, and invigorate me.
Let the shedding of Your Blood cleanse me of all my sins.
Let Your death obtain eternal life for me
and Your cross lead me to everlasting glory.
Let these constitute for me refreshment and joy, health
and uprightness of heart.
ALMA MATER
Domini Sumus: We are the Lord’s,
Ring out the bells of St. Pius,
Echoes resounding in golden tone,
A spirit that’s hers alone.
(Refrain)
We’re proud of you our Alma Mater,
Because of you we’re strong.
St. Pius Tenth, with you we’ll triumph,
To your call we throng.
From your wisdom and your courage,
We learn to banish fear,
Searching for life’s dream and promise,
Finding guidance near.
When from you we are departed,
When our four years are spent,
St. Pius, we’ll ever honor,
Ideals you represent.
EXPLANATION OF THE SCHOOL CREST
The school crest contains much from the
life of Pope St. Pius X. On the crest, the
winged lion symbolizes the St. Mark, patron
of Venice, the city of which Cardinal Sarto
was patriarch and cardinal before he
became pope. As pope, Pius X retained this
symbol for his own coat of arms. It is from
this symbol that the school proudly calls itself
the “Golden Lions.”
Appearing on the coat of arms of both Pius X and the first
Archbishop of Atlanta are the waves of the sea. On the
saint’s coat of arms they represent the seaport of Venice.
On the coat of arms of the Archbishop of Atlanta and on
our own, they symbolize the city of Atlanta, named from
the Atlantic Ocean.
Superimposed on the waves is the anchor of hope, again
from the coat of arms of Pius X. At the lower left of the
shield is a sword. This is the symbol of the martyrdom of
St. Paul from whose First Epistle to the Corinthians Pope
Pius X took his motto and from whose Epistle to the
Romans the school derives its motto, “Domini Sumus.”
Significant colors on the emblem are gold and white, the
Papal colors, and with blue, the school colors. The color
red symbolizes the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul.
To the left of the emblem is the “chi rho.” This can translate
to Pius X. Its original meaning, however, is derived from
the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ, “christos.”
St. Pius X Catholic High School
2011-12 SENIOR ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
TAYLOR GLENN
Taylor was a four year Varsity Soccer player and Cross Country runner. She was
instrumental in leading our Soccer team to three consecutive State Championships
and one National Championship. She was also a lead runner on a State Runner-Up
and State Championship Cross Country team. Taylor will be most remembered for her
competitiveness and ability to “come up big” in the contests that mattered most. She
is currently playing soccer at Elon University.
TREY WHITE
During his time at St. Pius X, Trey participated in Football, Basketball, Baseball and
Tennis. He was a three year starter at quarterback on the Football team. Trey was
an outstanding athlete, but he was best known for his leadership, enthusiasm and
competitive spirit. Trey is currently playing football at The Citadel.
2012-13 GEORGE B. MALOOF SCHOLARSHIP
caroline wooten
Caroline has been a starter on the Girls’ Soccer team for the last three years. She
helped lead the team to consecutive State Championships in 2010 and 2011.
Caroline is a phenomenal athlete who possesses blazing speed. This combined with
her outstanding skills means she is always a threat on the field. Most notably, though,
she has that knack for scoring a goal when you need one most. Coach Maloof loved
those kinds of players!
JACK SPEAR
Jack has participated in both Football and Baseball for the last three years. He will be
a significant contributor to both teams in this his senior year. An outstanding athlete,
Jack is best known for his determination and leadership abilities; two qualities Coach
Maloof would have loved!
Chad Paetznick, Band Director
Before becoming the band director at St. Pius X, Mr. Paetznick was the Assistant Band Director
for six years at Paulding County High School in Dallas, Georgia. Previously, he instructed
percussion at Thomas Worthington High School in Worthington, Ohio. Upon first arriving to
Georgia in 1998, Mr. Paetznick instructed instrumental music camps for Pope High School,
Fayette County High School, Sprayberry High School, and South Cobb High School.
Mr. Paetznick earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from The Ohio State University.
While at Ohio State, he performed as a percussionist in the symphony orchestra, concert
band, symphonic band, percussion ensemble, basketball band, and was the drummer for
the jazz lab ensemble.
Mr. Paetznick marched snare drum with the competitive 1992 Star of Indiana drum & bugle
corps (now known as the award winning theater group “Blast!”). That year, Star of Indiana
placed third overall as a group, and finished second place in percussion at the Drum Corps
International World Championships held in Madison, Wisconsin. Mr. Paetznick was also a
member of the 1987 Florida Wave drum & bugle corps which placed 13th at the Drum Corps
International World Championships. Mr. Paetznick graduated from Cooper City High School
(FL) where he was a member of the award-winning “Sound of Pride” marching band. He
was also a member of the South Broward County Honor Band.
Mr. Paetznick was the recipient of the “Excellence in Teaching” award at St. Pius X for the
2008-09 school year. He has been nominated twice for “Teacher of the Year” (2007-08 and
2010-11). His current hobbies include collecting LP vinyl records and other music memorabilia.
He also performs on drums, and enjoys attending concerts. Mr. Paetznick and his wife have
two sons and two dogs.
Jenney Kliesrath, Flagline Instructor
Jenney Kliesrath is currently a student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she is
studying Industrial Engineering. Jenney graduated from Collins Hill High School in Suwanee,
Georgia. Since 2006, she has been spinning and dancing with several different color guards.
She participated in her high school’s fall and winter programs for all four years of high school,
and was a captain her senior year. That same year, the winter guard was a semi-finalist in
Winter Guard International (WGI), in Dayton, Ohio, and Jenney received a WGI Scholarship.
In the summer of 2009, she also competed with Alliance Drum & Bugle Corps, a DCA corps of
Atlanta, Georgia, and marched with the Georgia Tech Color Guard for three years. Jenney
is currently marching with The Edge Independent, an Independent A winter guard based
out of Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Although color guard is a very big part of Jenney’s life, and she dedicates a majority of her
time to the sport, Jenney also enjoys spending time with her friends and family, reading, and
watching TV.
Clay McCloud, Dance Coordinator
Mr. McCloud was a performer at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida for 10 years. While at
Disney, he performed in shows, parades, and special events, as well as television specials. He
was also an Assistant Chorographer during the 1996 Olympics here in Atlanta. Mr. McCloud
has been contributing his creative knowledge to dance studios, musicals, pageants, dance
teams, and special events in the Georgia dance community for 16 years. Clay choreographs
2012 Marching Golden Lions Halftime Show “Influence From Beyond!” featuring the music from the
Tron Legacy and Inception movie soundtracks. The show is about someone who comes to visit the
band from another world, and eventually influences the entire band’s sound and look in a futuristic way.
A unique element of this year’s band show is the use of more electronic sound equipment to help create
the futuristic sounds in the show. Enjoy!!
