From the President 

God’s blessings upon the DeSales community continued to be evident as our school 

experienced another outstanding year in 2007-2008. Though many changes were made, 

new faces were introduced and first-time programs were launched, the quality education 

offered to the young men of DeSales High School continued to reflect a commitment to high 

standards, best practices and a responsibility to “Live Jesus” in our daily lives. And though it 

may be human nature to resist change, it is often empowering for us to embrace change as 

“an opportunity for virtuous actions.” New windows, classroom renovations, great academic 

achievements and renewed success by our athletic and extra-curricular programs have all 

made this year a magnificent success. 

The school’s first ever capital campaign has begun. From the campaign, we will be able 

to increase tuition assistance, attract and retain highly qualified faculty and staff, and continue 

to make improvements to our facilities. A new sponsorship agreement for use of the building 

and land enables us to lay the ground work and provide vision for the next fifty years. I 

would like to express my deep appreciation to those of you listed in this report for graciously 

providing physical and financial support to our mission. I ask for your continued generosity 

and urge others to join us as we broaden the scope of our commitment and reach for greater 

heights. 

Through the Fr. Jude Annual Fund and other sources, we were able to provide over $178,000 

in financial aid. Fifty-six exceptional young men graduated in 2008, with 100% of them being 

accepted to a two or four year college or university. They earned over $2,200,000 in academic 

scholarships. Most important, they have graduated with the pillars of the DeSales experience, 

“Faith, Brotherhood and Tradition”, to support them. 

So many wonderful things have been accomplished in the past year, and so we begin this 2008- 

2009 school year with great excitement and anticipation. Our enrollment has increased for the 

third consecutive year. Our Board of Directors, Faculty and Staff have set higher standards for 

the future. What we accomplish in the coming months and years will be in partnership with the 

support of our alumni, parents, friends and business community. I invite you to join us in our

Service and Ministry Programs 

Based on the Carmelite philosophy to “Live Jesus”, the service 

and ministry program at DeSales High School encourages 

students to demonstrate concern for God’s creation through 

volunteer work in the community. The Service and Ministry 

Program is designed to allow each student the opportunity to: 

• understand that each person is made in God’s image and 

is deserving of their God-given dignity. 

• utilize their talents and gifts to work for the common good 

in our world. 

• continue the compassionate mission serving others. 

Students are required to volunteer 100 hours of service for 

graduation. Forty of these hours may be done at the student’s 

parish/church or at DeSales. The remaining sixty hours must be 

done through a local non-profit service agency. Upon request by 

the Campus Minister, a student may perform all 100 hours at a 

local non-profit service agency.

From the Principal 

I embark on my first year as Vice President of Academics/Principal of St. Francis DeSales High 

School mindful of the pillars of “Faith, Brotherhood, and Tradition” that have been hallmarks 

of a DeSales education for more than half a century. These three pillars are foundational to 

the Catholic secondary school experience—an experience that I have shared in both as a 

student and educator. 

As a native of Bardstown, Kentucky, I spent my formative years as a parish member of 

the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral and student at St. Joseph Elementary School. I 

graduated from Bethlehem High School and later earned my bachelor’s degree at Western 

Kentucky University. Upon entering into the field of education, I completed a Master of Arts 

in Teaching degree and am currently working toward the completion of a doctoral degree in 

Leadership Education, both at Spalding University. I have indeed been blessed to have been 

formed spiritually, academically, and socially in the traditions of the Catholic faith and owe 

much to that formation. 

I consider my call to Catholic education a vocation that is ceaselessly rewarding. I am 

entering into my position at DeSales after serving for the past six years at Bethlehem High School 

where I began my career as a Social Studies Teacher and Campus Minister. I entered into 

administration as Assistant Principal during the 2007-2008 school year and later served as Interim 

Principal. Throughout my experience, I have learned that the essential attributes of an effective 

educational leader are found in one’s commitment to the values of Faith, Excellence, Integrity, and 

Fairness. The mission of DeSales High School reflects these values. I pledge to consistently and 

diligently adhere to that mission and, through my efforts, to do honor to the proud tradition of this 

outstanding institution. 

DeSales High School exists now, as it has for over fifty years, to serve the Church by serving the 

needs of young men in the Greater Louisville area. DeSales strives to prepare them spiritually, 

academically, athletically, and socially to be competent and ethical members of our society and 

faithful builders of God’s Kingdom. I am proud and honored to have the opportunity to serve the 

mission of St. Francis DeSales High School, a mission designed to provide a Catholic secondary 

education and experience that is second to none!

In 2006, with full approval of the DeSales High School Board of 

Directors, President Doug Strothman petitioned the Archdiocese 

of Louisville for a new, more progressive Sponsorship Agreement. 

With this request also came the proposal to create the “St. Francis 

DeSales High School Foundation”, an entity envisioned by the 

Board to handle charitable giving to the school. 

Negotiations with Archdiocesan staff culminated with the drafting 

and execution of two seminal documents. The first is a revised 

Sponsorship Agreement with the Archdiocese, updating the 

original agreement made in 2004. The new agreement provides 

DeSales with a twenty-five year commitment from the Archdiocese 

for the continued use of current properties and facilities on 425 

Kenwood Drive, as well as an option for a second term of twentyfive 

years. This new agreement, with an eye towards the bright 

future ahead for DeSales, will take the school to its Centennial 

Anniversary year in 2056. 

The second document gives permission for the creation of the St. 

Francis DeSales High School Foundation. This Foundation has 

now been established, obtaining its incorporation and

Foundation is overseen by a separate Board of Directors. 

The formation of this Foundation has helped pave the way for 

the Stand Up! Stand Out! Stand Proud! Campaign for DeSales, a 

capital campaign recently launched that is still in its preliminary 

phases. The Foundation will also protect any charitable giving 

and other assets intended for the use of DeSales High School. 

Future plans include moving the Fr. Jude Annual Fund and 

other Advancement Office operations under the umbrella of the 

Foundation.

From the Director of Advancement 

The Annual Fund is an important component of the charitable giving received by the 

Advancement Office each year. Annual Fund contributions are unrestricted and offer the 

school more flexibility in meeting the needs of its students, faculty and staff. Your Annual 

Fund giving helps support special projects and capital needs at the school, and also 

contributes to the financial aid pool allocated by the school, helping make tuition more 

affordable for many school families. 

Over the last few years, giving to the Annual Fund has seen substantial growth in both 

donors and gifts. While total giving has topped the $130,000 mark for three years in a 

row, total donors has climbed from just 466 in 2003-04 to 1,312 last year, an increase of 

182%. We are grateful for the hundreds of new donors who have come forward to invest 

in the mission of DeSales High School. 

Nearly half of all Annual Fund dollars is raised through the school’s Phonathons. During 

a two-week period each semester, alumni, students, faculty, parents and staff contact 

benefactors across the country seeking pledges for the Annual Fund. Last year, the 

Phonathon received over 1,200 pledges. The Phonathon is hosted by our corporate 

sponsor, Republic Bank & Trust Company, which generously loans DeSales the space and 

phones to make nearly 14,000 calls annually. 

Joining DeSales in the Advancement Office full-time to assist with the Annual Fund and 

Special Events in 2007 was Mrs. Janet Harpe, a former DeSales parent and volunteer. Janet 

spent last year at DeSales overseeing some of the school’s biggest fundraisers, including 

the Benefit Feast, Ramble for the Roses and the Phonathon. Janet has also worked hard 

to help organize class reunions for our alumni. Janet’s contribution to the Advancement 

team, along with the part-time help of Administrative Assistant Ginny Rosenbaum, has 

substantially enhanced the fundraising operations of DeSales High School. 

With no gift being too great or too small, your yearly participation in the Annual 

Fund is what matters, and your enthusiasm for the great things going on at DeSales is 

infectious. Just look around at the vibrancy of the school community today and you 

can feel the difference!

Some 30 years ago I first passed through the halls of Saint Francis DeSales High School and 

began my journey as a DeSales Man. Those four years went by in a flash and proved to be the 

most challenging and engaging period of my life academically, athletically, and spiritually to date. 

Furthermore, the fraternity that was developed with my DeSales brothers is still intact today. I can 

honestly say those years at DeSales largely shaped and developed the person I am today. 

By continuing my responsibility of supporting the Annual Fund and giving of my time and talent 

in my role as Board Chair, I am helping to ensure that others have the opportunity to become 

DeSales Men too. The tangible result of my contribution and the charitable giving of our DeSales 

Community continues to be the impact that thousands of young men, including nine other members 

of my family and two sons, feel on their journey to becoming DeSales Men. 

DeSales High School continues to thrive after five decades of education because of the countless 

loyal and dedicated people who have taught here, enrolled their sons here and given to this worthy 

institution. DeSales graduates quality young men who have had a large impact on our community through the years. By choosing to 

be stewards of this school we stand on the shoulders of many who believed as much in DeSales as we do now. 

Under the leadership of President Doug Strothman, 2007-2008 was another great year for DeSales. We continue today moving 

forward with great financial and academic momentum. We have made several noticeable upgrades to our building while controlling 

the rising cost of tuition in such a way that it is fiscally responsible to the school and not burdensome to parents. This year we 

formed the St. Francis DeSales Foundation that will provide countless new opportunities for the future. Our increased success in 

fundraising will enable us to fund new facilities, recruit and retain great teachers, and enhance student aid. 

On behalf of the members of our community, I want to thank all who have joined me in supporting DeSales. I encourage those who

2008 St. Francis DeSales Benefit Feast 

The 2008 Benefit Feast dinner-auction 

gala, featuring the Hall of Honors 

induction ceremony, was held on Saturday, 

January 26. The Benefit Feast takes its 

name from and is scheduled around the 

Feast Day of St. Francis DeSales, which is 

January 24. Nearly 300 patrons took part 

in the great food, fellowship and fun of 

this great event, helping the school raise 

over $50,000. 

For this year’s fundraiser, an exciting 

Mardi Gras theme put everyone in a 

festive mood. Our guests enjoyed star 

treatment when they pulled up to the 

front of school and had their car valet 

parked. Gold (power), purple (justice) 

and green (faith) were the colors of the 

evening, and they reflected throughout 

the school as guests proceeded from the 

front doors of the school down the hall 

into our very New Orleans-transformed 

Dodge gymnasium. Bourbon Street 

frescos adorned the walls invoking the 

spirit of Mardi Gras festivities. Jazz music 

gave our guests their very own chance at 

revelry and an opportunity to do their own 

“dancing in the streets.”

Alumni Association 

The DeSales Alumni Association continues to be a vibrant and 

active group within the DeSales community. Alumni events 

throughout the year provide opportunities for DeSales grads 

to celebrate the great friendships they have made while helping 

support the school and its students. Over the last five years, 

alumni activities and fundraisers have enabled the Alumni 

Association to donate over $100,000 to DeSales High School. 

Areas of support have included tuition assistance, mission 

trips, technology items, and special events, as well as 

unrestricted giving. 

Alumni events during the 2007-08 school year included the 

DeSales Family Reunion, the Dart Baseball League, Cornhole 

Tournament, the Shack Foundation Scramble, the DeSales 

Summer Picnic, and the Alumni Golf Scramble, hosted by 

the Class of ’71. The Alumni Association also provides many 

helpful volunteers for school events, such as the Benefit Feast, 

Ramble for the Roses and Open House, just to name a few. 

The group continues to update the Alumni Veterans Memorial 

located in front of the school, honoring DeSales men who have 

served or are currently serving our country in any branch of 

the military. Anyone interested in purchasing a brick for the 

Veterans Memorial should contact the school at (502) 368-

class of 1967’s Forty-Year reunion - September 8, 2007 

Members of the Class of ‘67 met at the DeSales Family Reunion 

Day on September 8, 2007, surrounded by all the festivities of 

the annual alumni get-together. The ’67 Yearling brought back 

memories and laughter as the classmates reminisced about their 

high school days. Tom Biven spearheaded the reunion. The 

grads enjoyed the live outdoor music, cookout, the corn-hole 

games and catching up with their DeSales brothers. 

class of 1977’s thirty-Year reunion - november 17, 2007 

The Class of ’77 reunited on November 17, 2007, at Executive 

West Hotel, enjoying a buffet dinner, drinks, and dancing. DJ 

Jason Shields of “Music in Motion” provided the entertainment 

focusing particular on the great music of the 70’s. The reunion 

committee consisted of Kurt Zinser, Paul Brown, John Singleton, 

Eddie Muench and Stuart O’Neil. The group had an evening filled 

with lots of memories, catching up with old friends, and looking 

to the future of the class of 1977 and DeSales High School. 

class of 1982’s twenty-Five Year reunion - 

September 7, 2007 

The DeSales Class of ‘82 began their reunion by meeting up 

at the DeSales/Owen County football game at Manual Stadium 

on Friday, September 7. The grads were impressed with the 

Colts’ easy 42-0 victory over their district foes. After the game, 

the former classmates met in the Coach Room at DeSales for 

a barbeque dinner catered by Jimbo’s Bar-B-Que, where they 

reminisced about old times. Joshua Blandford from the DeSales 

Advancement Office helped catch everyone up on current events 

at their alma mater. The group also enjoyed viewing the DVD 

documentary of the 1981 season of the 4A State Runner-Up 

football team, produced by class of ‘82’s Tim Crook. 

Class of 1968 

class of 1997’s ten-Year reunion - August 4, 2007 

The Class of ‘97 had an informal and relaxed class reunion at 

Flanagan’s Ale House on Baxter Avenue on Saturday, August 

4, 2007, organized by Josh Hardy. They had a good turn out 

with about 30 graduates and their spouses/significant others in 

attendance 

class of 1968’s Forty-Year reunion - June 20-21, 2008 

The Class of ‘68 gathered during the weekend of June 20 and 21 

to celebrate their forty-year class reunion. The reunion weekend 

coincided with the annual DeSales Summer Picnic, and on Friday 

night a special booth was set up at the picnic for the group. 

About 25 classmates came, visited, and swapped many stories. 

The hair color may have faded, but the memories were still sharp! 

According to some, many of the stories did not need to leave the 

group. Wayne Stewart and MC Irvin stayed to help shut down the 

picnic. 

On Saturday night, the former classmates got together at the 

University Club on the campus of the University of Louisville. 

Twenty-eight people attended the dinner, with drinks and more 

stories getting the party started. Doug Strothman, President of 

DeSales High School, stopped in to visit and speak to the group. 

A photo was taken of those who attended Saturday’s dinner. The 

class looks forward to having a 45-year reunion cookout on a 

Saturday in the summer of 2013. Special thanks to Tom Kaelin, 

Joe Gahlinger, MC Irvin, Lynn Kurtz, Jerry Ennis for helping 

organize the weekend.

The Ramble for the Roses 

The 23rd annual Ramble for the 

Roses, an official Kentucky Derby 

Festival event, was held on Tuesday, 

April 29, 2008. In its 23rd year, this 

event has grown to be the second 

largest participation event of the 

Kentucky Derby celebration. This 

was DeSales’ fifth year as co-host. 

The Ramble features a five-mile non-competitive walk through 

South Louisville on the Tuesday of Derby week, beginning and 

ending at Iroquois Park. At the finish line of the walk is the 

event’s mini-festival, featuring booths, music, grilled food, 

and drinks, not to mention the free fruit and ice cream for all 

registered walkers. Mayor Jerry Abramson and Metro Council 

members Rick Blackwell, Dan Johnson and Vicki Welch were 

on hand to participate in the festivities. The mayor launched the 

walk with his customary blast of a canon after a countdown from 

the stage at the starting line. 


The Ramble is a major fundraiser for the Holy Rosary 

Foundation, DeSales High School and Holy Cross High School. 

The funds are primarily generated through sponsorships and 

registration fees. So, as more people register for this familyoriented 

event, more money is raised for the schools. The 

money generated from the event goes directly into the operating 

funds for Holy Cross and DeSales. The Holy Rosary Foundation’s 

portion of the proceeds goes into its scholarship program, which 

funds scholarships at DeSales and Holy Cross. 

Be part of a growing group of people who combine healthy 

walking and their support of DeSales by participating in the 

2009 Ramble for the Roses. Next year’s Ramble is scheduled for 

Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Registration forms will be available on

St. Francis deSales Society 

Noted for his ministry’s emphasis 

on optimism, humility and Christian 

humanism, Francis DeSales was also 

a prodigious author and is known as 

the patron saint of journalists. In the 

DeSales school crest, the Carmelite 

founders celebrated this gift of writing 

with the image of a quill pen, symbolizing 

scholarship at DeSales. Members of the 

St. Francis DeSales Society are committed 

to this ideal and have contributed 

underwriting gifts of $1,000 or above 

to advance the spirit of Francis and the 

mission of scholarship at DeSales.

The Latin sentence Tenui nec dimittam, 

taken from the Biblical Song of Songs, 

translates to “I have taken hold, and I will 

not let go.” This phrase was a favorite of 

St. Francis DeSales, as it is a reflection of 

God’s tender, yet tenacious, love for us. 

Contributors within this Society exhibit 

a similar level of resolute dedication to 

DeSales High School, with annual giving 

between $500-$999. 

Principal’s Society 

Beginning in 1956 with Fr. Jude Cattelona, 

the principal at DeSales has always 

been challenged with the critical task of 

academic and spiritual development of 

students at a formative age. Annual gifts 

of $250-$499 demonstrate strong support 

of the vision and leadership of faculty, staff 

and administration in carrying out the 

school’s Christian call to serve others.

The Colt mascot at DeSales is a symbol of 

youth, strength and the determination to 

reach one’s full potential. Annual gifts of 

$100-$249 help DeSales honor its mission 

of challenging students to achieve high 

standards in pursuit of ever higher goals 

and instilling confidence in their ability to

Scholarships at DeSales 

Brey Family Scholarship endowment 

This endowed scholarship fund was established by Mike Brey 

‘65 and his sons Greg ‘89, Eric ‘92, and Darren ‘96 in 2006. 

Currently in the funding process, the endowment will support an 

annual $500-minimum need-based scholarship at DeSales. 

Holy rosary Foundation Scholarship 

The Holy Rosary Foundation awards four $1,000 scholarships 

to incoming freshmen at DeSales based on financial need and 

scholastic achievement. These awards are renewable for each of 

the recipients’ three remaining years at DeSales. DeSales utilizes 

its existing financial aid process to determine financial eligibility. 

Preference is given to descendants of Holy Rosary Academy 

graduates. 

Andrew ising memorial Scholarship endowment 

This endowed scholarship fund was established by Scott ‘84 

and Anna Ising in 2006 in memory of their son Andrew, a 

sophomore at DeSales. Currently in the funding process, the 

endowment will support an annual $500-minimum need-based 

scholarship at DeSales. 

Jeramie Johnson memorial Scholarship 

This $500 scholarship is privately funded and awarded annually 

in memory of Jeramie Johnson ’91 to an incoming freshman 

from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.

in memory of Most Blessed Sacrament student Michael Maier to 

an incoming freshman from MBS parish. 

William t. owen Scholarship 

DeSales High School awards the William T. Owen Scholarship 

to one student each year. This endowed scholarship fund was 

established by alumnus Dr. John Sansbury ‘69 in memory of his 

father-in-law, Mr. William T. Owen. The scholarship is a $500 

financial aid grant that is offered to the family who qualifies for 

aid but doesn’t receive financial aid from any other source. 

rex robinson memorial Scholarship 

The Rex Robinson Memorial Scholarship was established by 

alumnus Joseph Gries ‘67 in memory of former Athletic Director 

Rex Robinson, a long-time teacher and coach at DeSales. The 

fund supports two (2) annual scholarships of $500. Recipients 

must be sons or grandsons of DeSales Alumni or Holy Rosary 

Alumnae and also qualify for financial aid. 

Shackleton Foundation Scholarships 

In 2002, The William I. Shackleton Foundation was established 

in memory of DeSales graduate Bill Shackleton by his wife, 

Sharon Lamb Shackleton, and friends. “Shack” was a successful 

international businessman who remained close to his friends 

at DeSales throughout his career. Retiring in his mid 40s and 

returning home, he contributed time, talent and treasure to 

help build the baseball building on campus and helped spur 

growth in the DeSales Alumni Association. In the fall of 2001, 

Shack was diagnosed with lung cancer and succumbed to the 

disease five months later. Shack cherished his opportunity to 

attend DeSales, and the Shack Foundation was established to 

support students who want the same opportunity. Candidates 

must demonstrate financial need and have a good disciplinary 

and academic record. Priority is given to those who are active 

in their parish or community. The Shack Foundation’s Board of 

Directors administers the scholarship program. 

St. elias Scholarship 

The St. Elias Scholarship is a $1,000, one-time scholarship 

awarded to any incoming freshman who scores in the 90th 

percentile or above on the placement test composite score. The 

student continues to carry the academic honors of the St. Elias 

Scholarship throughout his DeSales career if he maintains a 

minimum 3.25 grade point average.

Albert F. Hodapp ’64… 

presented a paper entitled “Television and 

Children” at the Iowa Association for the 

Education of Young Children Conference 

in October, 2007. 

William r. Sulzer ’64… 

has been married 37 years to his wife, 

Barbara, and has a son, Kevin, and two 

granddaughters, Allyson and Sophia. He 

served in the Navy from 1965-68 and then 

worked for 28 years at Tube Turns Inc. as 

a Senior Inspector of parts for the US Navy 

Trident submarines. After many years of 

involvement with the United Steelworkers 

Local 6828 Union and involvements in 

political campaigns, he joined the staff of 

county commissioner Steve Henry in 1992 

and later served under Russ Maple until 

the merger of city and county governments 

in 2003. He currently serves as Louisville 

Mayor Jerry Abramson’s labor liaison. 

Stanley e. Wafford ’64… 

is currently employed as Financial 

Controller for a company in Grand 

Cayman, Cayman Islands. He says he 

doesn’t get home as much as he would 

like but always enjoys receiving the 

e-Newsletter. He would like to tell all his

retired after four years in the US Marine 

Corps and 28 years with the Jefferson 

Co. Police Dept. He now lives in Shelby 

County, KY, where he plays softball and 

raises Boer goats on his farm as a hobby. 

He has been married to his wife, Gloria, 

for 38 years. They have enjoyed camping 

and traveling in such global destinations 

as South Korea, Czech Republic and 

Germany. 

Arthur G. Busch, Jr. ’69… 

resides in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he 

recently commenced a two-year contract 

teaching in an international school. After 

teaching he plans to retire in Melbourne, 

Australia, where he has lived and worked 

since 1975. 

Joseph m. Federspiel ’68… 

was enshrined into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame 

on April 30, 2008. Joe joined six other inductees 

to be honored in 2008, which included UK greats 

Jamal Mashburn and Tubby Smith. Joe was a firstteam 

All-State linebacker in 1967 at DeSales then 

made All-SEC and second-team All-American honors 

at the University of Kentucky. He went on to play ten 

seasons in the NFL, including nine stand-out years 

with the New Orleans Saints.

left his management position at Ann 

Taylor to become Senior Vice President of 

Supply Chain with Abercrombie & Fitch in 

October, 2007. 

Gregory A. Baugh ’79… 

spent a six-year tour in the Navy as an 

Airborne Aircraft Electronics Tech and has 

been working in aviation ever since. He 

was employed by Raytheon Aerospace as 

a government contractor for the military 

and did a stint in Saudi Arabia during 

Desert Storm and again in Iraq in support 

of Iraqi Freedom. Greg is currently 

working for Boeing Aircraft in Charleston, 

SC, in support of the Air Force C-17 

Globemaster. 

Joseph m. Johnston ’79… 

has been working as a Air Traffic Control 

Specialist at a Army Airfield in Utah 

since 1998. Joe will be retiring from 

the Utah Air National Guard in October 

as a Traditional Guardsman with 26 

years of service. He’s been married for 

11 years to his wife, Susanne, and loves 

to roam around the pristine western 

desert of Utah. You can contact Joe at

was honored by the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) as a 

recipient of a 2008 Salute to Catholic Alumni Award. The CEF 

recognizes individuals who reflect the highest ethical standards 

and exemplify in their lives the values and teachings of Catholic 

education. Doug is Director of Sales and National Sales 

Manager for Main Line Broadcasting and has worked in radio 

for 25 years. He is a former senior co-captain for the Michigan 

Wolverines football team and currently serves as Chair for the 

DeSales High School Foundation.

Scott A. Haas ’84… 

received a Health IT Innovators Award at 

the December, 2007, Kentucky e-Health 

Summit presented by the Kentucky 

e-Health Board and the Cabinet for Health 

and Family Services. Scott is the Medical 

Director for the Kentucky Department 

of Corrections. The awards recognize 

advances in the implementation and dayto-day 

use of electronic medical records 

(EMR) in the healthcare workplace.

has been a Senior Project Manager in the 

IT industry since 1998. Marcus served in 

the U.S. Navy from 1986-1998 on active 

duty and in the Naval Reserves from 

1998-2000. Marcus also played semiprofessional

attended Austin Peay after high school, 

majoring in Radio and TV Broadcasting. 

He joined the US Air Force in 1991 and 

has traveled to such places as Japan, 

Guam, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. 

Thomas married his wife, Kim, in 1995, 

and they have 3 children, Kyle, Lindsey 

and Holly. Thomas is currently Executive 

Assistant to the Wing Command Chief at 

Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC. He has a degree 

in New Testament from Wayland Baptist 

University and will soon begin his Master’s

May, 2006. Paul and Angela have four

matthew S. Kessinger ’90… 

joined the Marine Corps in December, 

1990. Since then he has been stationed 

in such places as Guam, Saipan, Spain, 

Norway, Lithuania, Kuwait and Iraq. Mark 

is currently serving on his second tour in 

Iraq as a Military Advisor with the Iraqi 

Army, an assignment that has proven to be 

the toughest challenge of his career.

was hired as an associate professor of Child 

Health at the University of Missouri, where 

he completed his residency training in 

Pediatrics. Bernard and his wife celebrated 

the birth of their first child, Mason Reid

graduated from the University of Louisville 

with a BS in Accountancy and is currently 

working on an MBA from Indiana 

University. Jason works for UPS Airlines 

as a Financial Analyst and in his spare 

time as a real estate agent licensed in

has enjoyed several years as a journalist 

and newspaper writer, served as a cook 

and engineer in the US Coast Guard, and 

was most recently a children’s wilderness 

guide and therapist in the Idaho desert.

in Biology and in 2004 with a Masters

as the Big East Goalkeeper of the Week on 

three occasions. 

thomas Britt ‘04… 

was named this spring to the 2008 

National Association of Basketball Coaches 

(NABC) All-South District first team and 

the 2008 NABC’s State Farm Division III 

All-America second team. Britt received 

these honors after helping the Centre 

Colonels to a 26-3 overall record and a 

ranking as high as number four in the 

country, a season which boasted the 

nation’s longest winning streak at 25 

games. 

Kyle r. Leach ’05… 

staged a stunning upset in July, 2008, 

with his 2 and 1 match play victory over 

the national college player of the year in 

the third round of the 2008 U.S. Amateur 

Public Links Championship. Kyle is an 

accomplished senior on the golf team at 

Bellarmine University.

also announced during the graduation 

ceremony that an anonymous donor had 

made a gift to the school and requested 

that the school driveway be named in 

Tim’s honor - “Tim Burke Way”.

received a Catholic Education Foundation 

(CEF) Teacher Award in 2008. The 

award, which is sponsored by Dan and 

Helen Ulmer and family, recognizes 

teachers who consistently surpass 

expectations, have creative teaching 

styles and serve as a positive influence on 

students. Recipients receive a work of art 

and $1,000. 

mr. tom mcAnally (Social Studies)… 

retired after 21 years as Head Coach of 

DeSales Baseball. Tom notched his 700th 

victory last season, becoming only the 

10th coach in the state to reach that mark. 

Tom is also a member of the KY Baseball 

Coaches Hall of Fame. 

mrs. Laura Pohlmann 

(Learning resources coordinator)… 

has developed an award-winning 

Learning Differences program at DeSales. 

Thanks to her work, the school was the 

recipient of the 2007 Learning Disabilities 

Association of KY’s Beacon of Hope
