As I complete my first year here at Tennessee Tech, I look back
on a year of unprecedented challenge for the nation, the State
of Tennessee, and TTU. Here in the College of Business
we have suffered the loss through the retirement of several talented
faculty members, who, due to budget cuts, will not be replaced, and we
have streamlined our processes elsewhere. These changes have forced
us to review the very fundamentals of the educational process, such as
class size and how courses are taught. It is an easy time to feel down.
However, it is also a time to look at our progress in accomplishing our
mission of “…provid(ing) an educational foundation that prepares
our students to become successful ethical business leaders.”
We have truly excellent programs here in the College of Business. We
produce award-winning students. We have a very strong faculty who
teach a world-class curriculum. We are one of a handful of Colleges
of Business that are fully accredited by the Association to Advance
Collegiate Schools of Business. We achieved accreditation by the
Network of International Business Schools, only the second American
College of Business to be so honored. The College was included in
Princeton Review’s 296 Best Business Schools. We are able to provide
significant financial support to more students than any other college on campus. Some of these achievements are
covered more fully in this Annual Report.
Looking to the future, a number of changes are in store for Johnson Hall. Supported by several generous alumni
contributions, the new Heidtke Trading room, pictured on the front cover and scheduled for completion later this fall,
will provide a state-of-the-art facility for our students to experience the environment of a Wall Street trading room,
and will provide research capabilities for all of our students. In the planning stages are technological and cosmetic
updates to other classrooms, which are also supported by private contributions of friends and alumni of the College
of Business. A part of our efforts to “Keep the Promise” made to Dean Johnson, our goal is to provide a professional
business facility and atmosphere for our students as they prepare for careers in the profession of business.
As we move forward, we will continue to provide the excellence in education that our students and their families expect
from us, and that we expect of ourselves. As the State of Tennessee continues to struggle with budgetary issues, our
future will be more and more dependant upon private support from our alumni and friends. The changes sweeping
through the economy will not change our mission, but we will have to provide our own means to accomplish it.
As we navigate the changing economic climate, we are confident that, with the help of our students, faculty, alumni,
and friends, we will emerge a stronger and more effective College of Business. I invite you to spend some time reading
about what has been accomplished in a very challenging environment, and imagining what the future holds.
Gifts from TTU Alumni
Help Establish Excellence Funds
Alumnus makes commitment to accounting department
“I’m proud of my affiliation with Tennessee Tech University because I think my accounting education
there prepared me incredibly well for my career.”
That is the primary reason Al Kent, a 1977 College of Business graduate and now a partner
with Pricewaterhouse Coopers in St. Louis, recently pledged $50,000 to establish the Accounting
Excellence Fund.
“I’ve been with Pricewaterhouse Coopers for 31 years, and in that time, I’ve felt fortunate and
blessed both with my career and with the education that helped prepare me for it. The work ethic I
learned at TTU certainly helped me to be successful in my career,” he said.
Kent has long been involved with the Accounting Department and the College of Business,
serving as a member of TTU’s College of Business Board of Trustees for more than 20 years and also
as a member of the College’s Accounting Advisory Board.
In fact, his continued interest in the success of the TTU Accounting Department is due in large
part to his commitment to the Accounting Advisory Board directed by Dr. Dan Fesler, chairman of Al Kent
the department.
Dr. Fesler and Mr. Kent met as colleagues at Price Waterhouse Coopers and have continued their friendship since Fesler’s
departure to academics at TTU.
Kent lives in St. Louis with his wife, Kay, a native of Carthage, Tenn, and their three children — Al, Andrea, and Ashley.
The Accounting Excellence Fund Kent helped to establish will assist the university’s Accounting Department in providing
support for faculty and student development, stipends, and academic research.
“As more and more Baby Boomers retire from the work force, there will be a shortage of faculty across the nation and a crisis for
quality instructors. This fund will help TTU’s Accounting Department respond to that crisis or any other particular need it may
face,” Kent said.
Dean James Jordan-Wagner says he hopes other TTU College of Business departments follow the pattern set by the Accounting
Excellence Fund, and Kent says he hopes to challenge other accounting alumni to make gifts to keep the fund growing.
COB receives $1 million gift from McDonald Estate
Tennessee Tech alumnus Earl McDonald knew the value of an education and hard work. In addition, he was a living example of a
true philanthropist. The College of Business received $1 million from the McDonald estate.
McDonald was born in 1913 in Huntsville, Tenn, the third of four children. After completing his elementary and high school
education in Huntsville, he finished one year at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, qualifying him to teach school. He
taught third grade for one year in Huntsville, which provided him with the funds he needed to enter Tennessee Tech. In 1937, Mr.
McDonald graduated from TTU with a degree in business management and went to work for Southern Continental Telephone
Company, where he had worked during college. After one year working for the phone company in Cookeville, he transferred to
Fayette, Ala, where he would spend most of the rest of his life.
McDonald, who never took a sick day during his almost 50-year career in the telephone business, held many positions including
accountant, secretary/treasurer, board member, vice president, and president. As he moved up the corporate ladder at various
companies, the stock grants that accompanied his advancement made him a wealthy man. Despite his professional accomplishments,
McDonald considered his greatest achievement to be the 54- year marriage to his wife Thela Terry McDonald, who passed away
in 1993.
Earl and Thela shared their wealth with many charitable organizations, giving away almost $16 million during their lifetimes.
The bequest gift to Tech is not the first gift McDonald made to the university. In 1996, he donated $1 million to establish
scholarships for worthy students.
This estate gift ensures that Earl McDonald’s legacy will live on in the lives of the students his generosity continues to benefit.
The gift has been used to establish the College of Business Excellence Fund. Earnings from the endowment will be utilized for a
variety of purposes in the College, including student and faculty support, development, and accreditation activities.
A Conversation with John Glascock
O
riginally from Livingston, Tenn, Dr. John Glascock earned a degree in economics from the TTU College
of Business in 1971. His impressive resume includes master’s degrees from Stetson University, Virginia
Tech, and Cambridge. He holds a Ph.D. in finance from the University of North Texas. As a lifelong educator
his focus has been the real estate markets. He has held a variety of prestigious teaching positions in the United
States, and spent five years on the faculty at Cambridge University in England as the Grosvenor Distinguished
Professor of Real Estate. Dr. Glascock currently serves as the West Shell Professor of Real Estate Finance and is
the Director of the University of Cincinnati Real Estate Center. Dr. Glasscock lives in Cincinnati with his wife,
Linda, and their two children, Jack and Jenifer Ashley.
WHAT TRAITS DO YOU VALUE MOST IN
FRIENDS? Honesty
DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR? While at TTU it was
Dr. Whewon Cho in Economics and Dr. Graham Kash
in the English Department.
PERSON OUTSIDE YOUR FAMILY YOU
WOULD LIKE TO SPEND TIME WITH ON AN
ISLAND? John Howe, a friend and fellow real estate
guru who frequently book swaps with me. The book
swap is a great thing–we just drop them in the mail
to each other, often with no message or any notice. It
would be fun on an island to talk and think about life
with him. I am looking forward to seeing him soon.
WHAT LINE OF WORK WOULD YOU
PURSUE IF YOU COULDN’T WORK IN YOUR
PRESENT ONE? I would be a psychologist or maybe
a sociologist.
FAVORITE HOBBIES? Traveling. Two of my favorite
cities are Singapore and Helsinki. My wife’s family is
originally from Finland, so we really enjoy being there.
WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT? I sleep very
well….but my children…well- I do worry about them.
The broken heart of a child keeps me up at night.
WHAT IS THE SIMPLEST THING YOU HAVE
NEVER LEARNED TO DO? Type correctly.
Someone once told me I had the best four fingers she
had ever seen.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELIEVE STRESS? Read
and walk. I usually read about 15 books a year. I
recently finished “The Panic of 1907: Lessons Learned
from the Market’s Perfect Storm” by Robert Bruner and
Sean Carr. We do not want to go back to the gold
standard.
IF HOLLYWOOD MADE A MOVIE OF YOUR
LIFE, WOULD IT BE A COMEDY OR A
DRAMA, AND WHO WOULD PLAY YOU? Oh, a
comedy and I would be played by Moonlighting’s Bruce
Willis. I enjoyed Willis’ character from that television
show.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HAVE IN STORE
FOR YOU? My 60th birthday. I am anxious to see
where my children end up going to school.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO CROSS OFF
YOUR “BUCKET LIST” NEXT? I have done most
of it. Many years ago I lost a friend, and his death
hit me hard… so after that experience I decided to do
what I want to. I haven’t been to Uluru (Ayres Rock)
in Australia yet.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PROFESSIONAL
MISTAKE? Not being as polite as I could. I have a
“type A” personality and tend to step on too many toes.
I need to learn to go more lightly.
WHAT IS A SURPRISING FACT ABOUT YOU? I
don’t have a high school degree.
IN HER OWN WORDS
by Liz Dorris
Liz Dorris, a recent general management graduate, participated in an internship at
Southwest during the Fall 2008 semester. Southwest received over 800 applications
or their internship and hired only 32. Below is a firsthand account of Liz’s first weeks.
Wow! All of the rumors and talk about Southwest
Airlines are true! This is an amazing place to work. On
my first day, I arrived to my cubical to find it decorated
with balloons, blowup airplanes and a goody basket, all
for me! Within the first 4 hours, I met the legendary
President Emeritus,
Colleen Barrett, who
took a sincere interest
in getting to know me.
I sat in on CEO Gary
Kelly’s midyear update,
in which he informed
us of exactly what is
going on within the
industry and around
Southwest Airlines. He
fired up the troops to
keep up our “Southwest
Spirit” through tough
economic times.
I am part of the Executive Office, working in the
Culture Services Department. I work closely with
the people who plan Southwest’s amazing parties and
visits for their employees and customers. My main
duties consist of event planning along with anything
in the way of promoting and preserving the Southwest
Culture.
I have been able to tour many parts of our very festive
Headquarters building and meet so many of my
fellow employees. I’ve taken advantage of every service
opportunity, workshop or social gathering possible; it’s
so great to work for a company that wants its employees
to grow as individuals.
Not only will I be traveling to several of our stations
throughout the country
to do Culture Visits, but I
also have unlimited, space
available, flying privileges.
The other interns and
I have been using every
weekend to travel and see
the country! There are
just too many perks and
benefits to list! For example,
the other day, Gary Kelly
was passing by my desk
and said, “Hi Liz!” Yes,
the President and CEO of
the most profitable airline
in the industry knows my name! I say all of this to
remind you that I am only an intern! In this unique
company, however, no one is “only.” I am treated with
respect, empowered to make important decisions, and
motivated to work hard and have FUN.
If you can’t already tell, I am loving my experience here
in Dallas. I’m learning so much about the corporate
business world and about life in general. I’m so
thankful for my Tennessee Tech family who has been
a great support. Thank you Tech, for helping students
make their dreams come true!
College of Business Students Get a Lesson
in Dining Etiquette
The slogan was “It’s the poise that pays!” On Wednesday, April 9, business students had an opportunity to put
that poise into practice at the business etiquette dinner in the Cody Executive Suite in the Roaden University Center on
the TTU Campus. The dinner was sponsored by 21st Mortgage Corporation, The College of Business Student to Career
Program and Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity, and was intended for business students to gain experience with dining
in a business professional setting.
Student to Career Program Coordinator
Amy Jo Carpenter states, “Many of our
students will experience business interviews
over meals and/or attend an event that involves
a meal with a potential employer as they search
for employment; our manners speak volumes
about us as professionals. I want our students
to feel comfortable with themselves in those
situations and hope this event will provide them
with some insight and practice in the process.”
This is the first year the College of Business
Student to Career Program has sponsored an
etiquette dinner, and the college hopes to make
it an annual tradition. “Any time that we can give our business students an opportunity to function in a business
professional situation is an opportunity that contributes to their future success,” says Carpenter.
The evening consisted of foods
provided by Chartwell’s Dining Services
including hors d’oeuvres, salad, a full meal
course and dessert. Guest speakers were
Chartwell’s Executive Chef Joe Distilio,
Dining Services Director Sam Holm, and
Director of Catering Victor Kline. The
corporate sponsor, Gene Crabtree from 21st
Mortgage Corporation, also gave some dining
interview tips.
Each student who attended the dinner
received a printed nametag and booklet with
helpful dining etiquette tips and pointers.
The etiquette dinner preceded the College
of Business Student Career Fair that took
place on TTU Campus April 9 from 10 a.m.-
3 p.m. in the Roaden University Center.
Jackson County FBLA Organization Visits
TTU’s College of Business
By Tracey Hackett
A
May tour of Tennessee Tech University
gave students in Jackson County High
School’s Future Business Leaders of America
organization a glimpse of what it might be like to be a
college business student.
The idea originated from Cheryl Montgomery, a native
of Jackson County who now works as the director of
development in TTU’s College of Business.
“I just wanted
the students from
Jackson County
to know what
is available to
them here at the
university. There
are so many
options and choices
available to them
here, not so far
away from home,”
she said.
Organized by
the College of
Business, the tour
brought 16 students and JCHS club sponsor Kristy
Chaffin to campus.
“Our students really enjoyed their trip to TTU’s
College of Business and are already asking if we are
going back again next year,” Chaffin said. “Not only
did the students meet TTU student ambassadors, who
may become their peers, but they also met several
professors they may have an opportunity to learn
under.
“Our students were given information about what it
would be like for the first two years at TTU, including
what classes they would take, as well as where they
could live and what organizations they could join,” she
said.
The group was treated to lunch and a tour of the campus
and learned about the different degree concentrations
within the College of Business, while having the
opportunity to interact with and ask questions of
faculty and student ambassadors.
“The entire campus contributed positively to this event
in some way,” said
Amy Jo Carpenter,
coordinator of the
Student to Career
program in the
College of Business
and the event
organizer.
“That kind of
experience not only
helps those students
create a personal
vision of what a
college student
is and what the
college experience
should be like, but also helps them to actually visualize
themselves in that situation,” she said.
Who knows? The high school students taking the
tour this year could be the TTU Business Student
Ambassadors helping to lead such tours in years to
come.
For the 2009-2010 academic year, several schools have
already expressed interest in planning visits.
For more information about how other area FBLA
clubs or student organizations can schedule a College
of Business tour, call Carpenter at (931) 372-6198 or
e-mail her at ajcarpenter@tntech.edu.
COLLEGE RECEIVES
INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATION
The College of Business has been accredited as an
International Business School by the Network
of International Business Schools.
The accreditation focuses on the degree to which the
business school has become international in all facets
of its organization. TTU’s College of Business is one of
only three schools in North America and eight schools
worldwide currently accredited. The accreditation
process consists of a self-assessment questionnaire on
internationalization, a visit by an accreditation team,
and the decision by the NIBS Board of Directors.
“We are extremely pleased to have our efforts recognized
by the Network of International Business Schools,” said
Bob Wood, associate dean of the College of Business.
“The accreditation is the culmination of the efforts of
many individuals over the past several years.
“In addition to traditional international business courses,
we have also worked to increase semester long exchange
opportunities, short-term study abroad courses, and
international experience opportunities for our students
and the community,” Wood said. “We believe that these
activities better prepare our students for the competition
of the global marketplace.”
NIBS is a group of 80 business schools from around the
world that recognize the internationalization of business
and the globalization of the economy are essential
elements in the evolution of managerial practices. NIBS
members believe that higher education and training must
integrate a strong international dimension, including the
practice of foreign languages, the study of comparative
management techniques and the experience of working
and studying abroad.
They also believe that cooperation between educational
institutions in different countries contributes to a better
understanding between nations by furthering awareness
and knowledge of other cultures and social practices.
Members of NIBS recognize each other’s qualifications,
have a common goal of collaboration, and encourage
participation in student and faculty exchanges and joint
teaching and research programs. NIBS also sponsors
an International Case Competition for undergraduate
students which is held annually; Tennessee Tech hosted
the competition in March, and is the first U.S. school
to do so.
College scholarship program helps students meet their goals
In the College of Business, we have many things to be proud of, but one we are most proud of is our scholarship
program. From the very beginning, one of the primary goals of the College of Business Administration Foundation
(now the College of Business Board of Trustees) has been to provide scholarships for deserving students.
At the first scholarships and awards banquet in 1975, the college
gave out a couple of scholarships. Since then, our scholarship
program has blossomed to become the largest program on
campus. For the 2009-2010 academic year, our scholarship
committee reviewed almost 500 applicants to award $125,000 to
115 deserving undergraduate students. The MBA program will
award an additional $30,000 in the upcoming months.
This success is due to the commitment of our alumni and friends who
provide the money to help our students. Some of our scholarships
have been set up to honor or memorialize a person important in the
donor’s life, or the role TTU played in the donor’s life and career.
The donor has the option of setting the criteria for the award, which
may include geographical location, financial need, major, class standing, etc.
College of Business Board of Trustees scholarship recipients
Since 1975, the College of Business Board of Trustees has provided almost $2.5 million in annual and endowed
scholarship support to more than 2,300 business students.
Century club members help modernize classrooms
FISHING FOR TTU
“Does TTU have a fishing team?”, a fellow student asked
Josh Haskins, a sophomore basic business student, last year
during a flag football game. Josh did not know the answer,
so he set out to find out. He found we did not and several
students were interested in being a part of a club if one
existed.
Josh decided to start one because the first place winners of
the national competition could win millions for the team and
for their school. When he went to the website for collegiate
fishing last fall, he saw that University of Tennessee
was the national winner at that time. The whole
page was orange, and he promised himself that
by the time he graduated that page would be
purple and gold.
He secured a faculty advisor and filled out
the required paperwork to become a TTU
organization and the TTU Fishing Club
became official in the Spring of 2009 with
23 members and 8-12 members that were
seriously committed to competing in national
tournaments. These 8-12 became the
official TTU Fishing Team. The
team members used their own
fishing boats and vehicles to
compete in events.
Their first competitions
were in Florida and
Alabama. Two members
of the team drove all
night and day to get
to the competition in
Florida. They placed
18th out of 40 even
though they never
fished out of state
and had little sleep.
They got to meet
Roland Martin’s
family. Martin, a
legend in fishing,
invited them to
his bait shop and
gave them fishing
equipment just
because they were
the “boys from
Tennessee.” At
the same time as
the Florida event,
the other members
of the team attended a tournament in Alabama.
Although the team has competed in several states, their two
favorite tournaments (thus far) were at Lake Wheeler in
Alabama and Kentucky Lake in Tennessee. The first day of
the tourney in Alabama had weather of 34 degrees and sleet
and the second day had 29 degrees and snow. No one on
the team had ever fished in snow or at that particular lake.
They ended up being matched against Virginia Tech, the
national champion team, and only lost the tourney by four
pounds the first day. The second day they were matched
against Ole Miss and won by double digit weight.
That tourney was also memorable for Josh because
his favorite lure fell in the icy water and he went
in after it.
The Kentucky Lake tourney was a favorite
because they caught 17 pounds of fish in one day
with only a 4 person team and 2 boats. The other
teams had many boats and were fishing on their
home lake and still did not do as well as TTU. The
TTU team placed 10th out of 70.
When looking for sponsors for the
team, Josh sought out any and all
companies that sold any kind of
fishing equipment and sent them
a resume consisting of team
accomplishments. They have
received money, discounts, and
equipment from numerous
companies throughout the
country.
“We really need money this
year too. Every bit of the
gas, hotel, tournament fees
and equipment comes out
of our pockets once our
university funds are gone
(roughly $3,000). If we
have 5-7 people fishing
a tournament anywhere
out of state, that money
goes fast. My goal is to
also have our own truck
and at least one boat
wrapped in TTU colors
so we can truly represent
at tournaments. We are
the guys in purple and
we’re proud to be here!” said
Haskins.
FACULTY AND STAFF KUDOS
The 34th Annual College of Business Board of Trustees
Scholarships and Awards Banquet was held on April
30th. Recognized at the banquet were five faculty and
staff members who were selected by the Board of Trustees
for their outstanding performance for the past year.
Dr. Nat Natarajan - EXCELLENCE IN OVERALL
PERFORMANCE
Dr. R. “Nat” Natarajan, W.E. Mayberry Professor
of Management and Assistant Dean, is a nationallyrenowned
researcher who has been innovative in
teaching both
undergraduate and
graduate classes.
His excellence in
research is clearly
d e m o n s t r a t e d
by his extensive
list of research
publications. He is
among the top 100
researchers in the
field of Operations
Management. His
keen interest in
research is clearly
demonstrated in
his pursuit of a six
sigma black belt
certification. One
of his primary
motivations in pursing this is to bring the knowledge
into his classroom at both the undergraduate and
graduate levels.
Dr. Stuart Wells - CURTIS KINSLOW AWARD FOR
EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
Dr. Stuart Wells, professor of decision sciences, has
routinely received excellent course evaluations while
managing a heavy class load. His excellence in teaching
has been especially valuable in two courses – the new
MIS capstone course and the computer forensics course.
In the MIS capstone class, students work in teams to
develop a complete information system for a company or
organization. He devotes a significant amount of time
outside the classroom by meeting with the teams and
helping them develop their systems. In the computer
forensics course, students learn how to acquire, process,
and analyze digital trace evidence for criminal and civil
violations of corporate policies.
works to advance the appearance and confidence of
our business students by providing interview and work
appropriate clothing and encouraging success. She also
helped with the College of Business Career Fair in April
and was the driving force behind the “business etiquette
dinner” the night before the event.

“Take Care of My Building!”
...was the one of the last requests that the late Dean Louis Johnson made to former development director Pat
Quillen and former Dean Bob Niebuhr. They kept that promise and embarked upon a lofty goal of renovating
all the classrooms in Johnson Hall.
Over the last six years, with the generous support of alumni and friends, ten rooms have been renovated. They
include: the Christine Burks Classroom, the Tommy Lynn Suite, the Tom Orton Conference Room, the Kraft
CPAs Accounting Classroom, the Charlie Hawkins Classroom, the James McLamore Conference Room, the
Tom Neal MBA Lounge, the Emily Bedford Administrative Suite, the Virginia Plummer Room, and the Don
Ervin Auditorium.
The current Dean James Jordan-Wagner and Development Director Cheryl Montgomery are maintaining the
promise. Over the next twelve months the college will renovate and open three new classrooms.
Our current project is the establishment of the L.O. “Buzz” Heidtke Trading Room which will house the Eagle
Investment Center. The room will feature the most up-to-date technology available and allow our students to
experience what it is like to work at a financial trading center.
Upcoming projects include the renovation of our large fourth floor classroom by the Johnson Family and Mr.
Horace Burks and Room 218 by Mr. Jimmy Mackie.
