Inaugural Eco Symposium ends

Six Senses to expand environmental meeting next year

The Six Senses Eco Symposium which took

place recently at Soneva Fushi in the Maldives

has set the foundations for global environmentalists

to meet again to discuss effective and

profitable ways to combat global warming.

Hosted by Six Senses chair and CEO Sonu

Shivdasani, speakers included President

Nasheed of the Maldives; the founder and

director of the Forum for the Future Jonathon

Porritt; Stefan Schurig of the World Future

Council and Mike Mason of Climate Care.

Among the highlights was a commitment

by British Airways to only use fish from

sustainable sources in its in-flight meals and

the beginning of talks between the government

of the Maldives and BLUE Marine Foundation

to examine ways to create what could be the

largest marine conservation area in the world.

Shivdasani said: “Our challenge is to build on

the initial success of the symposium and bring

the thought leadership we have seen to a much

wider audience.” Details: www.sixsenses.com

NON-MONETARY WAYS TO MOTIVATE STAFF

When you can’t necessarily put additional money on the table, how else can you reward and encourage employees?

Mark

Grenoble

Mark is president of

the Enchantment Group,

a US-based spa and

resort management

company that was

created in 2007 by senior

executives from the

Enchantment Resort

and Mii amo Spa

I

n a challenging economy, how do you motivate spa

employees when you can’t put more money on the

table? Through experience at At Mii amo, a destination

spa at the Enchantment Resort in Arizona, US, we’ve

found three thoughtful, non-cash approaches to rewards

that we believe inspire our employees.

Firstly, we make sure that all of our staff have the right

stuff. Our skilled, intuitive therapists are the heart of our

success. We provide them with the tools they need to do

a great job, but we go one step further and check in with

them on a regular basis to make sure they have what they

actually want and need.

An example of this occurred recently when several of

our therapists expressed a desire to use arnica oil, made

from the infusion of arnica flowers, during deep tissue

massage, which is one of our most requested treatments.

Although this was more expensive than our current

product, it left their hands more comfortable after giving

several massages a day. We agreed that this was an

investment in their wellbeing that would also reaffirm their

value and contributions to our business.

Secondly, we have elevated the responsibilities of our

employees. We have empowered more of our line staff

to make decisions on their own, rather than calling for a

manager. As a result, they are using common sense, making

good decisions when something is not clearly defined

by policy and are proud of their growing leadership roles.

Finally, wherever possible, we have made sure that we

recognise the good works of our staff. To ensure proper

peer recognition, we initiated an ongoing Employee of the

Month programme. Winners were selected by management

and enjoyed a meal for two at our resort restaurant.

Furthermore, as a fun perk, ‘their’ choices are served

for lunch one day in the employee cafeteria. This idea

extends to the Employee of the Year, who is awarded with

a two-night trip and is showcased in the local newspaper.

In addition, our Wow Programme enables us to award

gift cards to employees who surpass expectations, such

as those who go out of their way to assist guests; those

who will stay late or come in on their day off in response

to returning guest requests, or those who suggest ways

the spa can be more environmentally friendly.

Another effective method is to give the staff feedback

directly from the customer. Every month, we post all the

positive comments collected from guest surveys so that

our praised employees are publicly acknowledged by the

rest of the team for their good work.

Ultimately, we’ve found that the biggest motivating

factor is creating a positive work environment where employees

truly believe that management cares about them

and values their many contributions. Listening, empowering

and recognising employees are among the proven

strategies that demonstrate money isn’t the only path to a

satisfied and inspired workforce.
