To our Donors, Members, Visitors and Neighbors,
Last May hundreds of Palo Alto families crowded into
the Art Center to celebrate the children's art achievements
at school and the work created by participants
of the Foundation's Cultural Kaleidoscope program.
Paintings, photographs, mixed media works, sculptures
and glass objects filled the galleries.
For me, the annual Youth Art and Cultural
Kaleidoscope exhibitions are the highlight in an
activity-filled year. The youngsters' smiles and the
exuberance of their art reinforce what supporters of the
arts know well: That the arts are essential to the
learning process.
The Palo Alto Art Center Foundation continues to
expand its art education activities. Foundation members
gathered in November to honor Ikechukwu
Onyewuenyi and Ashish Srinivasan, graduates of the
Carrie Abramovitz Scholarship Program. A standingroom
only crowd wished Onyewuenyi well in his studies
at New York University. Srinivasan is enrolled at the
California College of the Arts. During the summer we
distributed "Art Explorer" backpacks filled with art
activities supporting families visiting the exhibits.
Project LOOK! welcomed a record number of school
tours and Cultural Kaleidoscope reached out to 20%
more classrooms.
The Art Center's Art Dialogues program took up its central
role in our exhibition and outreach efforts. Docents
guided 400 visitors through the galleries in public and
private tours. If you haven't taken advantage of this
free service, I urge you to mark 2 p.m. Saturday on
your calendar and bring your friends. You will find
yourself engaging in a lively discussion. The docents
are not shy and I thank them and coordinator,
Merridee Taylor, for the knowledge, enthusiasm and
professionalism they bring to their volunteer role.
A new spring event, Style 2005, brought close to 500
enthusiasts of wearable art to the Art Center where
jewelers, clothing and accessory designers were on
Message from the President
hand to fill their needs and wants. Thanks must go to
Diane Master, creator of the event and manager of
The Gallery Shop, who assembled a truly "Stylish"
event.
The Palo Alto Art Center Foundation's membership
and donor base continues to grow. Members and
donors contribute an additional 15% to the Art
Center's City budget, and are crucial to the center's
ongoing financial health. Beyond their financial contributions,
our members and donors are an enthusiastic
and knowledgeable audience, bringing their interests,
excitement, community connections and personal
time to the Art Center. We are grateful for their continued
commitment and mutually beneficial relationship
with the Art Center.
Many others move the Foundation forward. Our development
director Lisa Gordon, our program assistant
Bonnie Packer, board members, Art Center staff, 250
volunteers, the Community Services Department of the
City of Palo Alto and the City Council give their time
and their expertise without hesitation. Thank you.
The Foundation is pleased to present its Annual Report
for the fiscal year 2004/2005. In its pages you will get
a flavor of our accomplishments and our growth,
financed by your generosity that permits us to "Bring
Art Home" to thousands of people of all ages. I look
forward to welcoming each of you to the Art Center in
the coming months and thanking you personally for
your support of the Foundation.
Yours sincerely,
Anne Gregor
Project LOOK! offers tours of exhibitions at the
Palo Alto Art Center to K-12th grade school
groups. Students, teachers and parents receive a
docent-led tour of the galleries followed by a
related hands-on activity or artist demonstrations.
Teachers receive a curriculum packet
before the tour with exhibition-related materials
and activities.
Project LOOK! docents are volunteers from the
community who receive intensive training at the
beginning of each exhibition. Rather than lecturing
the children, docents are trained to ask
questions and provide the tools that students
need to interpret the exhibition themselves.
The skills that students learn in the galleries
may then be applied to their future encounters
with art.
Project LOOK! tours were attended by a total of
272 classes and 5900 students from Santa Clara
and San Mateo counties during the 2004-05
academic year.
The Foundation supports 44% of the Project
LOOK! program's total budget.
Project LOOK! Family Days
Family Days offer free afternoons of creative
art-making to parents and children five and up.
A smorgasbord of art activities, often exhibitionrelated,
are lead by artists, educators, and volunteers
from the community. Family Day is one of
the Art Center's most popular programs, attracting
over 300-500 participants and 50 volunteers
per event.
The Foundation supported the following
Family Day programs:
Cultural Kaleidoscope
This artist residency program partners K-6 classes
from schools in the Palo Alto Unified School
District and the Ravenswood School District. A
resident artist works with a pair of classes for a
10-week period, as the students undertake a
collaborative art project. The overall goals of the
program are to expose school-age children to the
content and techniques of the arts, to supplement
and/or enrich the art curricula of surrounding
school districts in order to give the visual arts
a firmer basis within those schools, and to build
understanding of and honor the artistic and
cultural diversity in the community.
Cultural Kaleidoscope was identified as a model
program for the State of California in the
California Arts Council's Arts in Education
Initiative. Last year 26 classrooms, 13 artists,
and 556 children participated in the Cultural
Kaleidoscope program.
Cultural Kaleidoscope was supported 100% by
the Foundation through grants from:
Children’s Fine Arts
The Children’s Fine Art Education Program
provides young people in Palo Alto and surrounding
communities with a comprehensive
art experience. Classes and camps give students
creative skills that last a lifetime.
This year 2,192 children and teens between the
ages of 18 months and 18 years participated in
over 292 classes and workshops offered by
Children’s Fine Arts. Summer art camps and
intensive workshops saw enrollment expand
from 767 last year to 801 this year. CFA is
currently working with the Mitchell Park
Community Center to help program its new
teen center.
The Art & Technology Studio gives children and
teens, a place to explore the intersection between
emerging technologies and the visual arts. The
Fine Arts program has been able to offer innovated
technology classes in digital video, sound
and other emerging media.
was established in 2000 to honor the memory of
Carrie Abramovitz, artist and long time Palo
Alto resident. The Foundation has supported five
scholarship recipients. Based upon recognized
talent, a recipient works with a mentor artist for
two years.
The Foundation supports a half-time program
assistant position.
14
15

Volunteers
The Foundation supported in part
the annual volunteer appreciation lunch.
We are grateful to the loyal support of the
many volunteers who have devoted countless
hours to the Art Center.
Last year 254 volunteers gave over 3955 hours
of support to the Art Center. The hours represent
$72,000 of in-kind support, and are priceless in
helping us to keep all our great programs
operating.
Volunteers help in all areas of the Art Center
including receptions and special events, galleries,
The Gallery Shop, Family Days, Project LOOK!,
Cultural Kaleidoscope, Children’s Art classes and
camps, and administration.
What Brings Art Home? Passionate ideas.
Provocative expressions. And people like
you. We depend on individual donations to
keep Art Center education programs and
exhibitions going. Without your support,
so much of what we do wouldn't happen.
