1904. (Ano<strong>the</strong>r child, Adolf, birth date unknown, died in infancy.) For many<br />
years, German was <strong>the</strong> only language spoken in <strong>the</strong> family home. 64<br />
As his family grew J.B. Wenmohs prospered, <strong>and</strong> he continued to add to<br />
his l<strong>and</strong> holdings around Blanco County. In <strong>the</strong> late 1890s, when he was<br />
already becoming one of <strong>the</strong> best-known <strong>and</strong> prominent ranchers in <strong>the</strong> area,<br />
he began a series of transactions to purchase <strong>the</strong> parcels that, when fully<br />
assembled years later, would eventually define <strong>the</strong> original boundaries of<br />
Pedernales <strong>Falls</strong> State Park.<br />
In September 1898 Wenmohs purchased <strong>the</strong> old Maume ranch from <strong>the</strong><br />
American Freehold Mortgage Co. of London, Ltd., <strong>the</strong> same firm that had taken<br />
<strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> from Maume. In April 1899, he surveyed <strong>the</strong> 320-acre vacant parcel<br />
(Survey 34) s<strong>and</strong>wiched between <strong>the</strong> Willis West <strong>and</strong> Ferdin<strong>and</strong> Schroeder<br />
surveys, <strong>and</strong> bought it from <strong>the</strong> state. Then, in July 1899, he bought Caroline<br />
Hackenberg’s property; in December 1899, he acquired <strong>the</strong> A.C. Hughes tract<br />
from Nannie Jones. In September 1900, he bought out T.J. <strong>and</strong> Betsy Trammell,<br />
who sold him both <strong>the</strong> old Welch <strong>and</strong> Mary Terry tracts. Later that year he<br />
