Perhaps to encourage larger bird populations, <strong>the</strong> Wheatleys allowed <strong>the</strong><br />
ashe juniper (“cedar”) trees, which were already beginning to impinge on <strong>the</strong><br />
property, to proliferate. In an aerial photograph of <strong>the</strong> area taken in 1951, <strong>the</strong><br />
l<strong>and</strong> occupied by <strong>the</strong> Circle Bar is clearly much more densely wooded than <strong>the</strong><br />
ranches around it. By <strong>the</strong> early 1960s <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> contained some of <strong>the</strong> largest<br />
juniper trees in <strong>the</strong> state. By 1970, <strong>the</strong> “cedars” were spreading so rapidly that a<br />
number of previously unobstructed views were completely blocked. 85 In a few<br />
areas, <strong>the</strong>y cut back <strong>the</strong> cedar <strong>and</strong> tried to encourage <strong>the</strong> growth of native grasses.<br />
In 1958, hoping to attract more ducks to <strong>the</strong> area, <strong>the</strong> Wheatleys bulldozed a<br />
