In spite of <strong>the</strong> Wheatleys’ sometimes successful efforts to preserve <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>and</strong><br />

in its “natural” state <strong>and</strong> to enhance its wildlife population, <strong>the</strong>ir work with <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>and</strong> could not stop ecological changes already taking place when <strong>the</strong>y bought<br />

<strong>the</strong> ranch—<strong>and</strong> sometimes, <strong>the</strong>ir actions actually accelerated <strong>the</strong> property’s<br />

degradation. The crop farming during <strong>the</strong> 1870s, 1880s <strong>and</strong> later had in some<br />

places stripped <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> of grasses that had held thin <strong>and</strong> fragile soils in place.<br />

The grazing <strong>and</strong> overgrazing of cattle, goats <strong>and</strong> sheep during <strong>the</strong> late 19 th <strong>and</strong><br />

early 20 th centuries had also worked to eliminate native grasses <strong>and</strong> encourage<br />

erosion, while <strong>the</strong> proliferation of ashe juniper (“cedar”) trees robbed <strong>the</strong> area of<br />

needed water. The Wheatley’s apparent decision to encourage (or at least not<br />
